  • Cape Town - President Thabo Mbeki on Friday paid tribute to singing sensation Brenda Fassie, whose death earlier this month led to a mass outpouring of grief from thousands of her fans around the country.

Fassie's funeral - which the president is set to attend - will take place in Cape Town on Saturday.

Speaking at the end of his state-of-the-nation address before a joint sitting of parliament's two houses, Mbeki said Fassie had "passed away much earlier than should have been the case".

"Perhaps while she was among us, we did not fully appreciate how much her talent served to enrich our lives.

"But now we know, too late to do anything to bring her back to give us joy," Mbeki said.

Fassie died on May 9. She had been in a coma since suffering heart failure following an asthma attack two weeks earlier. She was 39.
