Zim 70 assault trial postponed
13/07/2004 14:57 - (SA)
Harare - The trial of 12 prison guards charged with assaulting some of 70 suspected mercenaries held in Zimbabwe, due to begin on Tuesday, has been postponed to later this month, a lawyer said.
Defence lawyer Alec Muchadehama said that the guards will now go on trial at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison on July 27.
The twelve are accused of being behind an incident in April in which 18 of the 70 men being held at Chikurubi on charges of plotting to overthrow the government of Equatorial Guinea were beaten and doused with water.
The high-profile trial of the alleged mercenaries, who were arrested in Harare on March 7, is due to begin on July 21.
