Infanticide case postponed
25/08/2000 17:32 - (SA)
Bloemfontein - The case against a Bloemfontein couple charged in connection with
the death last month of their two-month-old son was postponed on
Friday to September 5.
Gerhardus and Hendriena Strydom were ordered to remain at the
Oranje Hospital, where they are undergoing psychiatric observation,
according to police spokeswoman Sergeant Loraine Kalp.
The Bloemfontein Magistrates' Court on Friday postponed the case in
their absence.
The couple's son, named after his father, was found dead in their
bachelor flat on July 13 after information from a member of the
public.
It is alleged the child's hands were tied behind his back with a
blanket. He was allegedly underfed, and one of his ears was torn.
The baby was blue in the face, and police believed he may have been
suffocated.
The couple's eldest child, a 23-month-old girl, has been placed in
foster care.
