Cape Town - President Thabo Mbeki has lost a considerable quantity of his 20-year-old KWV brandy, after a 27-year-old man allegedly broke into Genadendal, Mbeki's Cape residence and generously helped himself to alcohol
and food supplies.
Police sources told Die Burger on Wednesday that it is suspected that the
thief broke into Genadendal between 1 and 4 September. He was taken into
custody on Tuesday night at about 8.15pm.
Mbeki is currently in New York at the UN's Millennium conference. He does
not often use Genadendal as a residence.
Apart from food and drink, nothing else has been found to be missing from
the President's residence.
An incident of housebreaking has been reported to the Rondebosch police
station, but no charges have been laid against the suspect as yet.
A court date is therefore not yet known.
Details of where the arrest took place, were vague. Two versions of the
story were given by police officers.
The first was that the man, presumably a homeless person was arrested at
Genadendal after he settled in there and spent several days in the
President's residence. The other version is that the man was arrested at his own
home.
Tasneem Carrim, a Mbeki spokesperson confirmed, upon enquiry that there
was "an incident" at Genadendal on the Groote Schuur estate, and said that
the police's national protection unit is currently investigating. She did not
want to divulge further details and added that the media would be updated
on Thursday.
