Moscow - Former Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, will receive the prestigious Woman of the Century award at a lavish ceremony in London on Wednesday, a Moscow news agency reported.
The International Women of the Year Association, established in 1955, is honouring the 63-year-old space icon with the prestigious
award, RIA Novosti reported.
"We are incredibly proud that Tereshkova will be attending the ceremony with the political man of the century, Nelson Mandela,"
said the association's president, Lady Lothian.
"Tereshkova remains the only woman in the world to have carried out a solo flight into space for the duration of three days. This is an
amazing achievement," the writer and radio commentator added.
The awards presentation will be attended by 500 women with a high-profile in the business and social spheres, the news agency
said. - Sapa-AFP
