Iran has executed '200-plus'
04/12/2000 17:41 - (SA)
Nicosia - Iran's exiled opposition movement said on Monday that at least 200
people had been executed so far this year in the Islamic republic,
a number of them in public.
In a statement faxed to AFP in Nicosia the National Council of
Resistance of Iran said it had sent a list of 200 names culled from
Iranian press reports to UN Human Rights Commissioner Mary
Robinson.
Some convicted of murder were reprieved at the last minute under
Iran's Sharia law after relatives of their victims pardoned them as
they were about to be hanged.
"The list contains only the names of those whose executions have
been announced by the clerical regime," the opposition group said.
"The actual figure, which includes the execution of a large number
of political prisoners, is much higher," it alleged.
