Nigeria bans EU livestock
15/03/2001 07:32 - (SA)
Abuja - The Nigerian government on Wednesday completely banned the import of livestock and other by-products from EU countries against mounting fears over foot-and-mouth and mad cow disease.
"There is a total ban now on livestock and its by-products coming into this country from the United Kingdom and other European countries," Agriculture Minister Chris Agbogbu said.
"The ban will continue until such a time all fears are allayed concerning (foot-and-mouth disease's) persistence in that region," he said.
Agbogbu said Nigeria had not recorded any cases of foot-and-mouth so far.
He said that the government has embarked on a mass immunisation of animals "just in case, to build up their immunity against the disease". - Sapa-AFP
