  • Alistair Fairweather

Arthur C Clarke once wrote that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." I'd go a step further and say it's often indistinguishable from religion.

On the whole us humans believe that technology will eventually solve all our problems - cure all disease for instance, and end all hunger (or at least all boredom - anyone for Playstation?)

We're just as quick to blame our shiny new deities for all our problems, shaking our fists at their cold digital treachery. And as false prophets go, the crowds rarely get more worked up than over that great satan MXit.

After all since MXit arrived on the scene the kids have clearly been out of control - running away from home, sending each other nude pictures, falling in with con men or paedophiles and most recently distributing "slut" and "bastard" lists.

Really? So teenagers never ran away from home before? I thought MXit was just an instant messaging system for phones. I didn't realise it had brainwash and teleport functions. Here's an idea: maybe they were planning to run away anyway. Maybe they were troubled or bored or just rebellious.

You could argue that MXit makes it more likely - that troubled teens are preyed on by unscrupulous men (and women) who meet them in chat rooms. The problem with that theory, as with so many "MXit is the devil" theories, is that if you apply a little common sense to the situation, it evaporates.

Say a 14-year-old sneaks out of the house to meet another 14-year-old they befriended on MXit. They arrive at the shopping centre and find a 35-year-old waiting for them. What next? Let's apply our magical common sense ointment. Voila! They scamper back home and think "Gee, that was a monumentally bad idea. I won't do that again."

The same magic potion works on so called MXit con men. Imagine some random guy you've met in a chat room promises to whisk your whole family off to England where celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is going to help cure you of cancer, and promises to buy you a new house and a new car. With a dose of our potion no one would fall for such a story - but the Clurs did, all five of them.

    Blame game

And that's the nub of the problem - technology can't cure stupidity or poor parenting but neither can it be blamed for these things. You wouldn't blame the car for running over a pedestrian - you'd blame the drunk driver.

And that's why it's supremely irritating that the crook who swindled the hapless Clurs is dubbed the "Mxit con man". If he had met them in an aisle of their local Pick 'n Pay, would he be the "canned fruit and nuts con man"? Con artists don't need MXit. They have been doing just fine without it for millennia. The only reason they are on MXit is because that's where 7.5 million other South Africans are.

MXit attracts paedophiles for the same reason - sheer scale. The thing is, many convicted online perverts will tell you that meeting kids in chat rooms isn't as easy as you think. Modern youngsters are wary and savvy from a surprisingly young age.

Besides, it's far easier to get your hands on children as, say, a soccer coach or a scout master. Why spend months trying to get one good kid to sneak out of the house to meet you when you can get permission slips for a camping trip from a dozen trusting parents?

And as for the "Slut" and "Bastard" lists - teenagers have been making these kinds of mean documents for decades. MXit was merely a transmission mechanism - it could just as easily have been e-mail. Long before all these gadgets we already had an effective and untraceable medium - it's called malicious gossip.

    Then again

So MXit and technology in general is blameless and pure as the driven snow, right? Wrong. These new technologies do demand new safeguards - not because they are inherently more dangerous than real life, but because they have the potential to be safer than it.

This is really, as the cliché goes, an opportunity rather than a problem. We will never be able to manually monitor communication in a digital age - the scale is just too vast. It would quickly become a police state with one half of the population always watching the other (which would make for tedious television).

No, the solution is the machines themselves. We need them to understand us better, and report on our behaviour more accurately. We need, for instance, automated bots that pretend to be vulnerable children in order to detect possible perverts. In short we need artificial intelligence.

If that sounds like something out of Terminator, that's because it could well be. When we finally make machines that learn and think, and ask them to solve all our problems, we will need to be sure they don't turn the missiles on us. Because they would be right - we are the problem. Fortunately we are also the solution.

Full disclosure: our holding company, Naspers, owns 30% of MXit. I, on the other hand, own 0% of MXit - something I'm still kicking myself about.

      Mxit
    22/08/2008 09:45
The only danger Mxit poses is that people will stop talking to each other - the amount of times I've seen 2 people sitting next to each other but chatting on Mxit is worrying! - concerned

      Brilliant !
    22/08/2008 09:59
Fantastic piece, had me laughing in many places as a user of mxit I have had many ?ffers from various types of people for various things, but being a person who was raised with good morals and discipline I chose to ignore them. It is sad how people blame anything else for their or their kids behaviour and actions but themselves, come on people wake up ! - Panda

Can anyone remember Citizen Band Radio in the 80's? We had a blast, meeting new people. I remember our 'handle's' (code names) were in line with that era too...I know people who are still married having met through CB. - Forty something

There is always something other than PEOPLE to blame - what's your choice (Unless some inanimate object controlls your will) - guns, knives, alcohol, satan, cigarettes, cars, swords, knives, drugs, computers, etc etc etc? Nobody wants to accept responsibility. The buck is tired of being passed. - HooMee

This is gonna sound so groupie, but great article and even better writting skills. I still cant believe how gullible that Clur family was. Maybe they cant be blamed cause stupidity is probably a genetic disease in their family. Unfortunately people think technology is the big bad wolf thats gonna take their jobs and steal their kids. - bee

      Excellent article
    22/08/2008 10:59
I just would like to say. Thanks for this article. People should take responsibility for their own "stupid" actions and not blame technology. These negative human actions were always part of human behavior and will always be. - Lx

    22/08/2008 11:17
I have always had an isue with people blaming technology, or anything else other than themselves for their children's behaviour & common sense (more lack thereof). Too often have many parents felt tha they can easily blame technology for their own obvious lack parenting skills. If parents actually sit down & talked to their kids, none of this nonsense would happen. - stan

People like Alistair "Fairweather" never see evil until it's too late. Few people know that, if you take the letters Mxit and rearrange them, you get the word xTim, the name of Satan's little helper in Dante's Inferno. Coincidence? I think not. - Chris Roper

      Mixit and Commom Sense.
    22/08/2008 12:06
Hi Alistair, Being in the IT Industry myself, I agree with you, but from a different point of view. We need from a Christian way of life, to teach our Kids, Good and Evil, good old common sense. Companies like Mixit also have a a social reponsibilty (as weel as responsibility to Jesus) to ensure that they introduce measures to prevent harm to society. God Bless - Christian

      Fair enough
    22/08/2008 12:22
A hammer is a neutral tool - it can be used to hit in nails (its inteded use) or it can be used to bludgen a person to death. Same argument applies here. But I agree, there is a greater onus to help protect those that utilise technology for as much as it is able to enable, it can also place us in harm's way and fascilitate wayward intentions. Responsible use is key. - Justin

      It's the media
    22/08/2008 12:25
Great article and I couldn't agree more. However, you need to place a large portion of the blame on the media. They are the ones who write articles with headlines like "Mxit conman" and "14yr old runaway lured by Facebook." They need to sell newspapers to overly stimulated people. Headlines like "Non-technical Conman in toilet brush aisle steals old lady's purse" just don't sell. - MediaFrenzy

      Chris Roper's comment
    22/08/2008 12:42
I believe Chris Roper has upstaged Alistair here with his comment. It almost had me in despair, until I read whose name was at the bottom. Hilarious! The only reason Mixt is blamed is because of Telkom holding us hostage with respect to internet access. Kids don't have access to PC-based IM programs in SA, but they do have phones. If we all had internet on PCs, people would be blaming ICQ, IRC, MSN, AIM and Yahoo! I have used these since I was 10 and was never "lured" or conned. I'm not stupid. - Oom_Kosie

      Overly Concerned?
    22/08/2008 12:55
I am sure the advent of the telephone and internet/email attracted concerns from the technologically dwarfed elders of the day. As a parent I am not concerned about my kids getting involved in anything sinister, but am concerned about the amount of (wasted??) time spent on Mxit. Maybe I just don't relate to the attraction of this passtime. Maybe I waste too much time commenting on these forums :-) - SeanO

      Common sense is the key
    22/08/2008 12:58
With great freedom or power comes great responsibility... We are all responsible for our own lives, not God, not the Devil, and certainly not Mxit. - ASW

      @ ME
    22/08/2008 13:21
Evil is as evil does. So if you want to be evil or engage in evil doings, don't blame it on technology (or the devil) blame yourself. There is a grey matter between your ears. Hopefully it's called a brain. - TB

      How do you prevent overindulgence?
    22/08/2008 13:24
I am usually very liberal about these kinds of things. For example, I do not believe Slipnot had anything to do with the recent school killings. Slipnot is a band who plays music and not every second person uses their music as an excuse to slash someone. This is not the case with Mxit though. A significant percentage of kids who use it are addicted and spend endless hours on it. Overindulgence, abuse.. call it what you like. Too much of anything is not good. I think any sane person will agree that spending hours a day on Mxit or Facebook will have a negative effect on your life, studies, work or other real things which matter for kids and adults. You can be the best parent in the world but if your kid has access to something which is potentially harmful, you cannot protect or stop them from getting involved. We deny our children the use of certain things to protect them, do we not? Think about cars, bikes, adult movies, firearms, alcohol, cigarettes etc. This is because children do not have the capacity to deal with certain things as responsibly as adults (all in relative terms). Any good parent will control the time their children spend on games, internet, tv etc but with Mxit it is very difficult to control what they write or how much they use it. Isn?t the dynamics and integral makeup of the system inherently and potentially harmful? - Kal-El

      Kal-El: Control kids?
    22/08/2008 13:39
I have 3 very succesful & mature grown up kids. I never in my life tried to control what they did. I'd explain to them why they should not do this or the next thing and spelled out the possible consequences or results. Thus they learned how to control themselves. That is the problem with most parents - control without explanation. - TB

      EH?
    22/08/2008 13:56
I thought Slipknot was the devil.. Haha. - Slipster

      No
    22/08/2008 13:57
u can blame mxit, but this gives them a medium to work on and stay anonymous. This is the issue and they have access to young people not knowing what is best. - JB

      Great read!
    22/08/2008 14:07
I saw a beautiful slogan the other day "Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity". Blaming (your) mistakes on the devil or technology is not really going to get (you) any closer to fixing the problem. Perhaps it was the aliens (not the illegal ones)... - sarah

      @Kal-El
    22/08/2008 14:11
You've pretty much answered your own question, but I'll just clarify: if you're really worried about excessive Mxit usage, take away their phone. If you can "control" their TV time, you can control their Mxit usage. If they still won't stop, take away their pocket money. No airtime = no Mxit. Here's the crunch though - it's the excessive USAGE of Mxit that you're really worried about - not the service itself. Too much of anything is a bad idea - but that doesn't mean the thing in itself is bad. - Alistair

      The times...
    22/08/2008 14:21
I personally know people who, years ago, were so addicted to internet chat rooms that it certainly did affect their lives, and the same can be said of some kids and their cell phones today. People will blame MXit even if it is not to blame, because, however severe, it does affect many young people's lives - it is completely a part of teenage culture. But, like anything in life, while some people use it in moderation and there's nothing to worry about, others may get 'addicted'; 'in too deep'. - D

      morals! ! ! !
    22/08/2008 14:21
Good people is better before we go further to look at the principles and morals of how whoever has been raised rather than discussing the conseguences of certain activity,As long as kids have access to whatever they want they will intertain it,Heard. - Silo's

      good article
    22/08/2008 14:28
Good article. When are people going to realise that you cant blame everything on technology or on otheres. Befor Mixit came along kids were addicted to internet chat rooms and before the internet was discovered kids did hook up with looneys and did run away from home. Heinous crimes such as those committed by Gert van Rooyen were also committed befor mixit was even a thought in somebody's mind. - Hayley
