Dangerous 15/04/2008 09:09
The problem is that is is really easy to talk the talk, but when it comes to the walking she will have two left feet and the coordination of a three legged spider. The problem is the desensitized nature of crime. People baying for blood. The statement if followed though, turns the person killing into a killer and thus no better than a common criminal! - Tim |

Bath water 15/04/2008 09:10
Given the instructions from Susan, either leave the bath to run ( teaching your neighbor a good lesson in house-keeping) or ask the police to accompany you while helping the neighbor. - Tom-Thumb |

Stop Being So Limp-wristed 15/04/2008 09:13
Pick up the phone; phone the police and say; "Hello, my neighbour is about to board a plane and she thinks she left her bath water running. I am about to break into her house to turn the water off."
With an unemployment figure of 40%, many of us are expendable. I want an ommelette and I can't have one unless I crack a few eggs. Fire at will, Police officers, fire at will. - niels |

Support for such a clever girl 15/04/2008 09:17
Bad example Chris - You would only be in trouble if you were waving a gun at the neighbours or SAPS. That's the cruch isn't it? And as far as I know Shabangu didn't actually say anything that was against the law. The police may defend themselves if threatened. With our president and other leaders disappointing us so much with their denial on every important issue both here and across the border I am more than happy to support ANY politician who actually calls a spade a spade instead of stating the obvious months later like Mbete (ooh there are problems in Zim! duh?). I'm sure there are many people like me who are tired of the BS in general. And we can only hope that Zuma is going to shake things up around here. He has become more than just the hope of the poor now. Anything is better than stagnating in this stink of rotting accountability. I'd even go so far as to forgive some creative accounting on his part. - May |

Innocent or not 15/04/2008 09:19
Chris, poor Chris. Currently NO criminals are killed and hundreds of innocents are. Wouldn't you rather want it hundreds of murderers and rapists killed and only 10 innocents ? No, No lets kill the innocents off one by one, throw in some cops that are trying so hard to help, musician or two, and Oh, don't leave out an actress or two! - Francois |

Bathwater? 15/04/2008 09:25
Leaving the bathwater running when going on an overseas holiday. He deserves his house to be flooded ...
As for the shoot first, ask questions later. It works well in other countries, why not try it here. If you have nothing to hide then there is nothing to be afraid of, Right? - N4serZ |

You said it, Chris 15/04/2008 09:48
While my sympathies lie clearly with the police in their predicament, you do point out that the ideas expressed in her speech are "unconstitutional and contrary to heaven knows how many laws of the land." And that is what she must do - be a responsible minister who asks parliament to relook and change the laws so that the police can do their job properly, and not be hamstrunged. - Dave Robbins |

NO CHOICE 15/04/2008 09:48
Crime in South Africa has left me with no choice, but to agree with her "KILL THE BASTARDS"... On the PR Strategy thing she did her job well, people did know who she was, now everyone know her - Online |

Yes does not make any sense at All 15/04/2008 09:56
1st the constitution does not allow that,2)election are just around the corner they just want vote(to keep their seats),3)she need attension so she can be seen and recognised.4)just to keep our blood pressure down as if some thing is done about crime.5)innocent civilians will always b victims of brutality b coz such speeches.I think SA does not need shortcut to deal with crime.Proper strategies are needed. - dr phil247 |

You are wrong Chris 15/04/2008 10:00
Will you be shooting at the Police when they come and investigate? No you will not so why would they shoot you? Did the Police all of a sudden become stupid. Furthermore she did not say shoot first ask questions later, she said that they should serve and protect when people's lives are in danger, you breaking a window does not equate to this. Also it is about time that a cabinet member admit that there is a real problem unlike her president and her minister. - Doorboot |

Missing the point 15/04/2008 10:07
I don't think Chris' point was about the running bath water, but more about how more likely you are of being a victim of circumstance. I don't want an under-paid, under-educated policeman becoming my judge, jury and executioner, should I find myself at the wrong place at the wrong time. And if every Tom, Dick and Harry is free to shoot to kill at will, I bet there will be a lot more innocent lives lost. - NJ |

Kill the bustards 15/04/2008 10:33
I concur with Miss Shabangu that criminals should be killed, if you have ever faced a case where your relelative has been brutally killed by criminals you will feel the same. Although we shouldn't use emotional arguments when dealing with issues of crime, we are facing a situation where we ask ourselves what else are we left with....nothing..So shoot the bustards - Thokozani |

*sigh* 15/04/2008 10:41
Here we go again about it being unconstitutional. Did you even understand what this woman meant? Go see the letter I wrote to the editor not long ago. She didn't say "shoot people who appear suspicious". She said that the cops should respond with deadly force to those who clearly endangered the lives of police or the community. Before calling somebody a cretin, perhaps ascertain whether this constitution you rant about provides for deadly force when defending against lethal intent. - Wernardt Toerien |

Enough with the bath water 15/04/2008 10:44
you all missing the point, i think that the shoot to kill is totally unacceptable, this a democratic country, where is it in the constitution where it states that everyone has a right to kill..... - khokho |

Idealism overulling common sense 15/04/2008 10:45
Chris
Your idealistic utopia exists only in your own radically liberal mind.
A copy of the constitution won't stop a murderer from subjecting your family to violence. On the balance of outcomes, a shoot to kill policy will save more innocent lives than it will harm.
Realistic - though harsh - measures are needed because we live in a dysfunctional society. - Philosopher |

Susan who?? 15/04/2008 10:45
Susan Shabangu said just what many average South Africans think. We are all sick and tired of criminals having more rights that victims. That she is a politician and said it at an imbizo, makes it even more pertinant. For a moment, she took off the political cap and spoke from her heart. She will probably be sidelined like the deputy health minister was when she told Manto how bad her department was! We need more politicians like Susan.... - Gee PMB |

Give them guns 15/04/2008 10:47
South Africans are so complacent about the police. I remember the old South Africa, as rotten as it was, everyone of ALL races were afraid of the Police. It is not a bad thing. Criminals will be a bit more weary of breaking the law willy nilly as they do now. The police need to be respected. If it is going to take a little fear, go for it I say because I intend staying well away. Law abiding citizens won't be affected if they stay out of trouble. - Bonnie |

Kill the Bastards 15/04/2008 10:55
Under our current circumstances I'd rather have a few innocents accidentally killed than have a few thousand raped, killed and beaten half to death. I'd rather give those with licenses proper training and weapons to defend themselves, than have them unarmed and not able to defend their own. If I have to catch someone breaking into my house... All I can say is that I'll have a choice, my daughter's life or his. Which would you choose, Chris? Don't be stupid!! A cops life is worth more than a 1000 criminals. Protect the innocent and that includes cops, family and neighbors. - *** |

Fight crime - shoot back 15/04/2008 11:18
I think we're a long way from being the trigger happy wild west - as long as we're not talking about the criminals, that is. The reason the wild west was tamed was because criminals were hung from fenceposts and didn't have more rights than those trying to protect a peaceful way of life. Up with Susan and her motivation of the police - time to stop pussy footing about and give the police better training and resources - less rights for the criminals - CJ |

It is simply populist politics 15/04/2008 11:34
And it is the most dangerous turn in SA politics that I have seen. We have Zuma telling all and sundry what they want to hear, now Shabangu. I can live with Eskom, BEE, crime etc, but I cannot live with a government that moves with the popular opinion. Every systemic failure in Africa has been preceded by populist politics. Bad, bad, bad ..... - Excalibur |

Let bycon be bycon 15/04/2008 11:35

Doorboot - did the police what??? 15/04/2008 12:04
No boet, they did not suddenly become stupid, they always were. BUT... they did not suddenly become clever. You cannot give them carte blanche to shoot. The law ALWAYS ALLOWED THEM to defend themselves if their lives were in danger. What changed????? .. NOTHING. The woman is trying to be popular. She should just flash the crowd rather, that way the damage is limited to that audience and is less permanent!!! - Excalibur |
|
 |
| |
Sheeesh, this populist stuff works 15/04/2008 12:11
People here who hated the silly woman 2 weeks ago are now singing her praises. The law always provided for deadly force in response to threat on ons life, so NOTHING HAS CHANGED .. NOTHING!!!!! .. except that you now think this woman has single handedly changed the way we fight crime. SHE HAS CHANGED NOTHING .. the police always shot back, they will continue to do so, but they remain understaffed, undergunned, undertrained. NOTHING HAS CHANGED. Let them eat cake .......... #$%$# Sake!!!! - Excalibur |

just change the law 15/04/2008 12:19
I find these statements suspicious,as is Zuma's appearent support. In the end it comes from government. The government can change the law.Are these big mouths doing that? No.Very recently, many voices in government said "what crime problem?" many times over. These are just populist statements that will get people in trouble. We'll all be hehind her if she advocates chnging the law/constitution.Since she can (advocate that) but she doesn't,she cares not so much about crime as popularity. - kwk |
|
 |
| |
if she feels so strongly.. 15/04/2008 12:27
Why is she not campaigning to change the law? Indeed, we all share the basic sentiment (in fact I doubt whether the deputy minister really shares it), so let's not say we don't have a crime problem anymore.Let's not maim businesses that are campaigning for action. Let's not close efficient crime fighting units.Let's not fill all the top anti-crime posts with ruling party cronies.Too radical?Hmm, just what I thought. - kwk |
|
 |
| |
a list is needed 15/04/2008 12:29
If they don't want to change the law, can we get a list of points in the constitution and law that are outdated and should be ignored? - kwk |
|
 |
| |
And what alternative is there? 15/04/2008 12:29
It's easy to criticise but tough to give better options. Clearly whatever method the police are using now does not work. Something different is desired. I don't condone brutality, but hardline approach is commendable. Police must protect even if it means killing. Criminals are not scared to kill and why are our armed forces restricted? Change the constitution if needs be. - Chris-T |

giving hope to the people 15/04/2008 12:32

So what? 15/04/2008 12:39
So a politician claimed the SAPS should "shoot those criminal bastards"? I'm kinda having trouble understanding the big deal? Isn't that what most victims of crime (aka the South African public) has to say as well? - Nick |
