The kids aren't alright

Chris Moerdyk

A secret that has so far completely evaded human ingenuity is how to market messages to morons.

Take road safety for example. No amount of advertising or other types of marketing seems to get the message across to the morons who drive like complete idiots. And no, shock advertising does not work in Australia as many people think. What works in Australia is that the rules of the road are very heavily enforced.

A few weeks ago some municipal optimist put a third stop sign in our local main street. All that did was to give the majority of motorists in our suburbs another stop street to ignore. And one day someone is going to get killed. Nothing ever happens in this country until someone gets killed. Come to think of it, nothing ever happens even after someone gets killed.

But, the real point of my column is this: is it just South African parents who are trying to kill their kids or is this a global phenomenon?

Youth of today

Before I left Johannesburg a few years ago, in my leafy little steel pallisaded, boomed off, suburb a lot of drivers didn't bother about stop streets - they just barreled through without lifting their feet off their accelerators or taking so much as a deep breath between cell phone calls.

But, even worse, they let their kids follow suit. Every day I watched in awe as youngsters on little unlicensed, illegal, motorised scooters went belting about the suburb, flying through stop streets without a care in the world and completely devoid of any road sense or self-preservation.

On a number of occasions I saw three young girls aged between about five and eleven years old driving a quad bike through the streets - also belting along a frightening rate of knots. Quite apart from quads being off-road bikes, not designed to carry one passenger let alone three and extremely dangerous on tar, this one had no number plates or indicators.

By just adding two and two together, the phenomenon of parents ignoring stop streets and their young kids doing exactly the same, a child is clearly going to get killed. It is just a matter of time.

Too late for some

Then of course, there will be wailing and gnashing off teeth to beat the band and fingers will be pointed all over the place except at the real culprits. The parents.

Allowing unlicensed, underage people to ride motorbikes and motor scooters on public roads is nothing short of irresponsible, stupid, mindless, careless and a tragedy just waiting to happen.

And when it does, I shall be first in line at the grieving parents' home, not to commiserate or offer condolences but to lay a charge of child abuse.

Maybe that will get the message across. Too late for the dead kid of course but maybe the neighbours will notice.

  Go boy!!!
29/04/2008 12:36
I am with you all the way. Same said for idiots who don't or won't strap their children into the car chair. - Sarah

  Agree fully
29/04/2008 12:40
I Agree fully with you! I might add - it's the same misguided mentality that schools are supposed to bring up our children and teach them manners and to obey the law. NO! Schools should teach maths, science, etc. Parents should teach their kids the rest. Mine did! Why can't the other parents do so?? Oh, I forgot, because they're morons! Great column! - Sarel

  Child Abuse
29/04/2008 12:47
Many situations, from allowing kids on the road, to letting them go to places unsupervised at all hours, also rank as abuse/neglect. The difference between disciline and abuse is only love. Parents no longer love their children if they do not protect them from themselves. - Birdman

  They're lazy
29/04/2008 12:47
It's easier to give your kids what they want just to shut them up. 2 of my friends used to criticise people for not disciplining their kids - now they're parents to a 3 year old & laugh at his rude behaviour. Apparently it's cute. - Saffa

do you know what i love?
29/04/2008 12:52
are those idiot parents with those baby on board stickers on their car - with their kids NOT STRAPPED IN and the parents SMOKING AND TALKING ON THEIR CELLPHONES. Hey if you don't care about your kids' lives, why should I? - Tired of fools

  total madness
29/04/2008 12:58
I see parents driving with their safety belts on and their kids without any all the time. These people are normally driving fast and the kids are always playing and jumping up and down inside the car.If that is not a lethal combination I don't know what is. My five year old puts on his safety belt whenever he enters the car. I don't have to remind him ever.Whenever I slip up( which is seldom) he orders me to buckle up.Parent are ultimately responsible for their kids not the Govt. - Mo'

  Re:
29/04/2008 13:00
How stupuid to suggest it is only a South African problem! Due to my lack of garden space at my house in London I often find myself kicking a soccer ball outside in the street with friends, seeing some of those idiots drive and speed down cluttered roads is nerve wracking and you certainly wouldn't see that kind of speed in the suburbs of Cape Town. - Sean

  Part time parenting!
29/04/2008 13:08
Great Column! I don't think that parents should be continually blamed for the actions of their children. However, in this case it just shows the lack of responsibility and apathy of some parents! Unfotunately parenting is not a part time job....and its high time they start taking more care with their lives and the lives of other motorists! - Gar

  Free for all
29/04/2008 13:08
Nice article Chris.Unfortunately our kids are subject to examples (mostly bad ones)all around them these days.Typically they think if someone else can do it and get away so can they and a lot of parents think like that too and are happy to have them out of their hair.Talking about OZ and how strict they are. They're looking at passing a law that youngsters must always give elderly and disabled folks right of way in any circumstance. - psycobabble

  sean!!
29/04/2008 13:11
Dont think anyone cares about the bad drivers of Leyton or Wimbledon or which country has the worst driving in the world, point is that our kids are not safe from our drivers and from the moronic actions of some parents. - nWo

  Crazy Times
29/04/2008 13:13
I think it has to do with the environment we all grow up in. (please, I'm not excusing it or condoning it). There is no longer any value attached to life. Look at incidents like road rage, where seemingly sane people exit their cars, knowing the other driver may have a gun or at the very least, a baseball bat, to fight to the death about a parking space! Its all part of the same culture that has seen SA turn into a killing field. - ian

  Only when its too late,
29/04/2008 13:15
Then all those idiot parents ask themselves why? My 5-year-old son saw a little boy riding his skateboard in the road the other - alone - and he asked me how could his parents let him out into the road alone, dont they care? And this coming from a 5-year-old. I never let my kids play outside unsupervised, never mind letting them in the streets alone. People like that shouldnt be allowed to breed - Mel

  Killing our kids
29/04/2008 13:16
Yes Sean - it is a world wide phenomon, however, I think you have been away too long. Anyone in SA can and does 120km/h on any street at any time. I am constantly enraged by the child abuse in cars - behind a mother with 5 in the car all unprotected and jumping around just last week. Babies on the driver's lap are still another recurrent hazard. Perhaps that's what's keeping our "birthrate" down to 1% per annum. - Judith Taylor

  safety
29/04/2008 13:17
The worst I saw was a young mother in a big German car, having collected her toddler from the day care centre. He was STANDING unstrapped on the passenger seat with the window open. I was in a cold sweat with adrenalin pumping and did not know what to do as it was busy 5 o'clock traffic. I did not have a passenger to take her number.... either. - sheila

  Backseat
29/04/2008 13:35
Where I live, parents can loose their license if kids are not properly buckled up. Children under 4 years are also required to sit in a backseat-facing car seat. Rules are followed because penalties are high. - Bee

  very nice article
29/04/2008 13:36
Very nice artical, whicj I agree with, parents today are too damn lazy to look after their and teach them right and wrong, then when something goes wrong people blame everybody and everything else, except the parents,if your kid gets hurt or goes psycho and kills people, dont blame the roads or the music they listen too,or the games they play, blame the parents who didnt look after there kids in the first place and didnt wtch what they were playing,or what they were doing. - creech

  licence
29/04/2008 13:41
these days you need a licence for just about every thing from driving to watching tv how about introducing a licence to become a parent, it would go a long way to curb the population explosion - kitchenboy

  kiddie seatbelts
29/04/2008 13:44
We told our kids that the car wouldn't start unless the seatblets were on. On the odd occassion that we pulled off without a child strapped in, i would pretend that the car was stalling and then anounce that someone had left their belt off. Ultimatley, they can complain as much as they like but i am the boss in my house, it is not a democracy and we do not drive unless seatbelts are on. No debate, no discussion. - cheryl

Do the parents know what the kids are doing?
29/04/2008 13:50
You are so spot-on Chris, it is not possible to be any spot-on-er. I do think too that often the parents don't actually know where their children are or what they are doing - again poor parenting. And just yesterday I had to slam on the brakes for a BMX kid whose bicycle evidently had no brakes to speak of - I'd love to speak to his dad though! - Jaco

  And the malls
29/04/2008 13:54
Ever been to Colonade or Menlyn shopping centres late on a Friday night? At 21:00 children as young as 6 or 7 walking around with itsy bitsy skirts and tops. When those little girls go missing, the parents apear on TV and radio with tear stained cheeks asking "why my child?" - Me

  Global Problem
29/04/2008 14:01
I have been fortunate to travel a few parts of the world and it doesn't matter where you are. The Idiots are out there everywhere. Your sentiment is fantastic. My twins tell me straight off, "Daddy, I am not strapped in" just when they have climbed into the seats or "You haven't locked my door, Daddy, we can't go". I once confronted someone with a 2yr old on her lap in the front passenger seat. Her response was "I am holding her, she is safe". This idiot is obviously clueless about inertia. - The Grem

  An astrological approach...
29/04/2008 14:05
Astrologically speaking, I believe that the kids born today are part of what famous Astropsychologist, Dr. Louis Turi calls ?The Death Wish Generation? due to the astrological trends prevalent at this stage. Thanks to a heavy Pluto/Neptunian aspect and the ?Tail of the Dragon? located in Leo (Leo rules children/drama) this trend will continue where the children of the world have an innate desire to take risks and wreak havoc on the world. For more information on this, see his website: www.drturi.com. - Art

  Safety
29/04/2008 14:14
You are 100% correct. These people will only realise that there are consequences to their actions when it is too late and someone ends up getting killed. Unfortunately though they often end up hurting or killing innocent people through their recklessness. - frank

We've got to shame them into being better parents!
29/04/2008 14:21
Parents can't be everywhere to control everything but when I see toddlers standing on the backseat I seriously lose my cool at such utter stupidity. My babysitter is a physio student who treats kids that have gone through windscreens or been crushed against dashboards. She says often it would have been better if they had not survived at all... These days I do not hesitate in showing my disgust. Who knows you might save the life of a little person the next time you honk and tap the side of your head? - Yam

  Who kids learn from ?
29/04/2008 14:29
I have a theory, kids learn how to drive from watching their parents right. So if you grew up driving everywhere in a taxi your going to drive like a taxi. Doesnt this explain why we have so many bad drivers on the road? - B

  Agreed - and car seats
29/04/2008 14:31
I hava 2 year old son and I see parents holding their kids on their laps in front seat. Why have kids if you hate them that much!! - AJ

  I AGREE
29/04/2008 14:40
I am a firm believer in there is a time and a place for everything. In a suburb not the time nor the place to drive like a complete animal and ignore stop signs. I have had 2 accidents caused by idiots who refuse to obey either a stop sign or a robot and one of the cakes was drunk. So I say full the road with speed bumps and see what the idiots do then. Most parents have the pout of sight out of mind attitude hence their kids act just the way they do on our roads. - SPEEDY

  Car / Road Safety
29/04/2008 15:07
In Germany (where most of SA's 'safe' luxury cars are designed / built) and safety standards are visible (and enforced) EVERYWHERE, it's mandatory for kids up to age 12, to sit in the back, either in a car seat or booster seat (depending on weight). Given the population size, the number of fatal road accidents is minimal compared to SA. Oh, & the road rules are strictly enforced e.g. get caught jumping a red light, and your license is suspended for 3 months, regardless whether 1st offence or not - pp

  Kids in carseats
29/04/2008 15:22
I was driving behind a Citi Golf last week with two carseats in the back, kiddies firmly strapped in. I wished I could take a photo of this and hand it out to the parents at my daughter's preschool, who drives kids around loose in their fancy 4X4's and luxury cars. I want to tell them that if the Citi Gold driver can affort carseats, so can they! - Heila McKinley

  B...
29/04/2008 15:37
What about the people who grew up riding in luxury automobiles driven by their parents, what is their excuse. In fact most people that grew up riding in family owned and driven cars tend to own and drive their own cars. So, I think that you are mistaken to think that most of the bad driving on our roads comes from people who used to ride in taxis. - Giva

Part of the solution or get out the kitchen
29/04/2008 15:43
OMG I can't believe it. Here we are entering recession and we are worried about kids strapped in. Guys you either change your attitude and start standing together and try to influence local government, like we should have done years ago or you get out the kitchen and make way for those who want to earn more. We are a suffering nation, suffering I tell you, one story worst than the next. Get over yourselves! - Tinus

Road blocks to check child safety!
29/04/2008 16:17
While I was an au pair in the USA I went through countless roadblocks. The police did not even ask for a drivers licence, they opened the back door and check that the kids where sitting correctly and strapped into their car seats. Kids have to been in carseats or booster seat until age 12. If parents don't know how to strap in the seats they canstop at local fire departments and they help you. I fully understand why we are a third world country and how it will take an eternity to improve on that. - Margaret

kids kids kids and have kids
29/04/2008 16:17
good column, sad though that you never mentioned the fact that kids have kids.what do you expect from these morons whose kids are supported by the states, pathetic indeed. - sandile
