Chris Moerdyk

In spite of what a lot of market research shows, I'm not sure that consumers, particularly here in South Africa, are any less gullible and apathetic than they were in the 1950's when they believed anything and everything advertisers tossed at them.

There are all sorts of clues. For starters, some research showing that the vast majority of consumers in South Africa still trust sales people in shops in spite of the widespread use of backhanders and bribery by distributors and manufacturers trying to get salesmen to flog their product instead of someone else's.

And when it comes to advertising, things have moved beyond the old "New Improved" ploy although the majority of South Africans still swallow that line.

Every product under the sun is now anti-bacterial, so much so that if you believe the ads you would get the distinct impression that the entire world we live in so infested with germs that we're almost guaranteed to get a life-threatening disease once a month by just brushing casually past someone in a shopping centre or patting our favourite puppy. Heaven forbid trying to prepare food in a kitchen that hasn't been nuked of every germ known to mankind.

In fact, that whole anti-bacterial thing has got so out of hand a lot of scientists and medical people are advising parents to let their kids out in the garden every now and then to go and play in some good old fashioned muck just so they can build up some immunity.

Nothing like scaring the hell out of the consumer to flog products.

We deserve it

But then, the consumer deserves what the consumer gets. In most South African cities right now the quality of water that comes out of the tap is as good as and in may cases better than anything you'll find that is bottled locally.

Yet consumers will forgo a free glass of tap water in a restaurant and rather pay R15 for something of lesser quality that comes out of a bottle.

We've even had some advertisers punting "organic water" for heaven's sake and it wasn't too long ago I spotted a sign outside a filling station offering "organic petrol"

Then came silver. First we had silver washing machines that actually couldn't stop at telling consumers that they were silver because this made them look good but went on to say that a silver coated washing machine made for more healthy family laundry.

Amazing, in more than five decades I have never got sick from wearing clothes washed by hand, later on in an old fashioned machine with chopped up Sunlight Soap or now our existing modern, non-silver machine.

Missing

What the heck has my body been missing? I have four children, I pass water regularly and ablute with remarkable timing and precision and can still hit a golf ball past 250 metres.

I would love to know what would have happened if I'd had a silver washing machine for the past 20 years. Would I have 10 children and have won the US Masters?

Silver is flavour of the month right now because it's gone beyond washing machines. I would not be surprised if we suddenly started finding silver in our corn flakes, toothpaste, anti-bacterial kitchen floor cleaner, underarm deodorant and lavatory paper.

Don't get me wrong I'm not criticising these people for using all these clever marketing ploys - if they work and don't hurt anybody why not - even if they are stretching the facts to breaking point.

But, I am just marvelling at the gullibility of consumers. May they never grow up.

  So true
24/06/2008 08:37
Good article, just yesterday I laughed at the marketing ploys that the marketers come up with in a large shopping centre, yet they fail put a proper sign to point where the door to the shop is since they are busy renovating the shop front, quite funny, lunch time and a major retail store is completely empty with all the clever marketing slogans inside out of sight. - WAJ

  It's the need
24/06/2008 08:41
There is a certain gender (you work it out) that is desperately trying to save itself. Every "good" thing that comes along has to be right 'cause they heard it was good. And because it's good it has to be moral, and if you don't go with it then you are immoral. How can we survive if we're not all as scared as them! (I know, I know - sub text. I have issues) - Creigh

  At last
24/06/2008 08:47
At last somebody who is not falling for the bottled water hoax! Well said Chris. - Apricot

Having just bought a silver washer/dryer
24/06/2008 08:49
...I'm tickled pink by your article! However, I think you misunderstand: most people buy silver appliances...cos they're prettier! - VG

  Spot On
24/06/2008 08:50
Ja, and the flogged to death old ploy: Only R999.99!! Then they still have the cheeck to give you 1c change. And Mr Muscle - why Mr Muscle and not Mrs Muscle? I yet have to see any man bothering to clean a place that well!LOL!!! - TB

The bull is on the loose.
24/06/2008 08:56
The conrn flakes are "Vitamin Enriched" and they have all the "Natural Goodness" that a orange picked from the tree does not have. Not to metion that canned fruits are healthier than fresh fruits because fresh fruits take atleast two days to get to the market. - Clement

  New and Improve
24/06/2008 09:01
In memory of the late George Carlin. Something can't be new and improved. If its new there nothing previous to improve on. So please either call it new or improved. - aj

  Gullible & Apathetic
24/06/2008 09:05
Excellent article Chris. Manufacturers and distributors must be wringing their hands with glee in this town. But I think nowadays when you go into a store to purchase something you have to be more clued up on what you are purchasing than the sales person because nine times out of ten they haven't got a clue. And as you state with this "germ" invasion, they are merely playing on people's ignorance as common sense seems to have somehow "left the building". - Tracey Dark

  There you go Chris,
24/06/2008 09:14
now yoy know why you didn't win the US Masters :) - Half-Pint

  Organic Petrol
24/06/2008 09:15
"Organic" refers to "carbon-based molecule". Petrol is made up of a carbon "backbone" that has oxygen and water atoms attached, therefore it is automatically organic. I would love to see inorganic petrol. As for "organic" water, the closest organic compound to water if we look at structure, is ethane, which I guarantee you is nothing like water. - JP Strauss

  Apathetic? No, just pathetic ;)
24/06/2008 09:21
Had a look on an auction site lately? You'd be shocked at how easy it is to paint up a gorgeous advertisement for something which is otherwise plain, simple and outright unnecessary - and people buy it for that very reason: It appears useful / well-marketed. Why wouldn't anyone trust something which is so well advertised? Anyway, I'm happily scrutinous of products, even if they appear flashy, I would rather get something reliable than attractive. Simple Is Smart! ;) - TaurusaurusRex

  Scared to death
24/06/2008 09:36
Well done, and don't forget the Dettol, Sanex, Gill ... advertising. Kill al the germs and your kids will be safe. I say let them dig in the mud, don't wash their hands (unless the Nappy came off somewhere). Let them grow up knowing germs, as they say "keep your enemies close" Away with the green shield of antiseptics ... - Branden

  Organic, synthetic, quantum leap,
24/06/2008 09:41
Like most words, "organic" implies different things in different contexts. People who do not stop to think get caught by the marketing spin which is based on audio and visual triggers and the actual definition of the word is irrelevant. Things are what they are because of what they do, not because of what they are called. - Louis

  You forgot about digital
24/06/2008 09:47
Another of these fuzz words is is digital. Everything digital is good and everything analog is inferior. Most people don't even know what digital is so you can attach the label to anything. I have seen many brands of audio headphones that claims to be digital - an outright lie. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS DIGITAL HEADPHONES! However idiots keep falling for it. - al

  Sometimes it helps
24/06/2008 09:55
I have a bit of a body odour problem, 5 seconds in a synthetic shirt and I stick like a miner. But funnily enough by rotating these anti-bacterial soaps I can keep it in check - Head and Shoulders works the best... On the other hand, AJ is correct. How can something be new and improved? I mean, is it a new product or an improved product... - Dillon

  South Korea has been nano-fied!
24/06/2008 09:56
You simply have to come to a country like South Korea and discover that EVERYTHING contains silver nano particles. It's just insane! Even the Ziplock bags over here contains silver nano coatings to keep your food fresh for supposedly longer - even down to your Tupperware! This is a country that is obsessed with food hygiene but everybody's spitting on the streets! Silver nano paving stone anyone? - Christopher

  Science has proved
24/06/2008 10:03
Don't forget the "scientifically proven, science has showed, clinically tested on 55 old women etc" Science sells stuff and nobody questions science. - Birdman

  An advertiser's dream
24/06/2008 10:08
Hahaha!! A friend of mine falls for all these advertising ploys. I have just emailed her this article. I think it is ridiculous how as women we easily fall for these marketing campaigns. - Tiyani

  Bacteria
24/06/2008 10:20
On the radio they were muttering that under the soles of ones shoes is 66 million bacteria. You should have heard the disgust about that. Well so far my 1 in 66 Million chance has worked out pretty well for me the past 30 years so it can't be all that bad. Granted I don't lick my soles but I am not soaking them in disinfectant daily so I am quite happy to take my 1 in 66 million daily chance for the rest of my life. "ANTI-BACTERIAL" ... no wonder the kids of today are weak. - Clint

  Razors
24/06/2008 10:29
How much money do you think Gillette make each year by releasing a new and improved razor... I mean, by the way they carry on, one would swear that the exact same razor you bought a year before without the "Vibration" option is totally useless and will give you terrible rash, because the new one is so much better at preventing irritation. Sheesh, my poor Grandfather, shaving must have been a nightmare for him - Eduan

  Germs
24/06/2008 10:29
40 years ago we were not so obsessed with germ-fighting. Kids with allergies were rare. We have grown up to have strong immune systems and all the right antibodies. @aj: George Carlin is alive and well and still performing. - CooP

Tap water is NOT always safe!
24/06/2008 10:40
I always used to proclaim that people can drink tap water. Until I got diarrhoea & cramps. I started to boil off my tap water (Pretoria East) and I was fine for months. Then, I stopped the boiling-off for a day or two, and I got diarrhoea AGAIN. Since that day, I boil off my drinking water. And in a restaurant, my wife does NOT order tap water, like she always used to do. (I prefer beer anyway...) In Delmas, people got dysentery. So don't call it a "hoax". Our water works are overloaded. - Mark R.

  Confused
24/06/2008 10:53
There was a company that claimed that their product would "kill all known germs dead". Can you kill something without it being dead? - Jann

  Organic Petrol

  Water
24/06/2008 11:01
Highly amusing are the watersellers in Italy punting 'aqua fresca' (fresh water) and that for a product that is billions of years old. - Chris

  Lamo
24/06/2008 11:29
Business' are predatory entities, and we are their food. We stopped evolving thousands of years ago, now to make us buy something just put T and A on it. We are unable to resist the lure of status, sex, fear etc. What really makes your article annoying is the assumption that humans can resist the hours of advertising socialization we are bombarded with, and in this country there is no competitive advertising either, hence we suffer from "bounded rationalism". - Jason

  Correction and apology
24/06/2008 11:31
Sorry aj, you were right. I just read that George Carlin died yesterday, my bad. His website is still announcing his upcoming show. - CooP

  Germ killing is dangerous
24/06/2008 11:36
"Kills all known germs dead". Do the germs know this? My concern is that by killing off less aggressive, "milder" germs, we are helping evolution to bread "super-germs". It has happened with the TB virus - multi-drug resistant strains that are extremely hard to kill. Same with prescribing antibiotics, pre- and probiotics for everything. I suppose the companies are working according to: "What doesn't kill you can still make you really ill - so best to kill it in case it multiplies." - Justin

  Marketing
24/06/2008 11:42
I quite fancy some of the marketing ploys. its the idea behind the concept i like. the ploy relates to the product at hand. and naturally since soap and dishwasher is meant to clean, batteria will be an issue. now what i look for is companies using clever campaigns to indirectly challenge another company. im not gullible for wanting to "USE GRAMPA CAUSE ITS POWDER", i just prefer using panado cause its the "GP'S CHOICE". the way is has been marketed to me is more impressive. - Grey

  Well written,
24/06/2008 11:58
Chris, you had me well amused. I think that it is human nature to be drawn towards the bigger and better. I, thankfully, am not lured by ads, I use organic shampoo's, face creams and toothpastes (you hardly ever see their ads on TV), never used detol or sterilizers with my children and don't use medicine and guess what, never have to visit the doctor, (unless of course it is life threatening) - TJ

  Germs... give me the germs!
24/06/2008 12:09
What most people fail to realise is that half the bugs that we are sure to "kill dead!" are vital for our well being! Yes, that's right, bacteria and other micro organisms are needed to keep us healthy. - Robert

  Also Confused
24/06/2008 12:15
I don't know how many times I have seen that Handy Andy has 50% less scratching. Now over the years if you take all of the 50%'s now how much less scratching is there. Then I have seen a product where they give you 75% more free. What trash. - Andre

  H E L P ! ! !
24/06/2008 12:23
For someone suffering with OCD reading this was extremely traumatic. How dare you deny the germs are out there to get us!!! Jokes aside - well said. I am just waiting for Fat Free or Diet TOOTHPASTE! - Wouter

  C'mon...
24/06/2008 12:26
You guys act like estate agents haven't been doing this for decades. "Cosy apartment close to all amenities, perfect for those just starting out" anyone? (Read: dingy one-roomed basement next to a railway track) - zackmango

  New ...
24/06/2008 12:31
Dont forget the cr*p that is punted on the late-night TV ads. "... and apart from a screwdriver, you also get a chisel, egglifter, self-defence implement...but only if you dial NOW !!!" BTW CooP - George Carlin passed away on Sunday - mrakm

  Jann
24/06/2008 12:31
Did you know you can kill all known germs dead? But it only kills them for up to eight hours! Only bodybuilders and super-models have body odour, you never see a fat slob needing bacterial soap or deodorant. Only dirty people need soap - Birdman

  @ Eduan re. shaving
24/06/2008 12:36
I've thought about this as well.I also wonder just how many extra blades they can fit on a Gilette cartridge. Not too long ago there were 2 blades,then3,we're up to 5 now, whats next - 7? Great article, had a great laugh. When we grew up in the 70's we used to do things that according to today's standard should've killed us instantly! (remember putting your mouth over a hosepipe in a strangers' backyard and drinking water like that?) - J.O

  Life Insurance
24/06/2008 12:36
Today some company will sell u life insurance, ?because this is all you need and you have to have it?. 3 months later they start mailing you application forms for a more expensive policy, ?because the one you have currently is no good?!! - phil

  BS baffles brains? OF SHEEP!!!!
24/06/2008 12:44
Nice one Chris! Maybe the next article will be on all the BS used to advertise health and beauty products? I hate advertising with a passion because of all the manure they feed you to try and convince you that their product is better than the next... Maybe the ASA should clamp down? Or maybe consumers should start thinking for themselves? - Battlegoose

  Is anything good for consumption?
24/06/2008 12:47
Processed vegies and fruit in tins healthier than natural ones? Check: can't eat fruit and vegies from the garden(coated with too many pesticides and insecticides), can't eat beef(madcow),can't eat eggs(salmonella),can't eat chicken(birdflu), can't eat maize/corn(genetically modified).. So what's left to eat?Aah..Chocolate?? - davem
