Sing when you're winning

2008-08-19 09:20

Chris Moerdyk

In a desperate bid to try and forget about the pathetic performance by the Springboks against the All Blacks on Saturday, I'd like to look at the way in which our rugby administrators have completely stuffed up one of the most emotional parts of the game.

The anthems.

Now, I get a real lump-in-the-throat-goosebumps-on-the-arms kick out of the national anthems before a test match. Watching the faces of the players and listening to thousands of fans in the stadium singing their hearts out.

It doesn't matter to me that some of the players sing out of tune or that hundreds of fans are a few bars behind.

These few moments are packed with national pride and raw emotion.

Harmony

In fact, one of my great ambitions is to be in the crowd at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in Wales, to experience for myself the sound of 80 000 Welshmen all signing their anthem in perfect harmony. I am told by friends who have been there that its enough to bring tears to the eyes of the most masculine of men.

But now, our rugby administrators here in South Africa have decided that those of us who decided not to buy a ticket but rather sit at home to watch the game should not have to be exposed to anything off-key.

So, they have sanitised the whole national anthem part of the game. They have ripped out the emotion, flattened out the goosebump effect, marginalised the crowd and generally turned what was something that got our adrenalin going into a rather pathetic piece of stage-managed show business.

Now, I have no problem with the singing ability of South Africa's three Bala Brothers who sang the New Zealand National Anthem nor "The Broers" who sang our anthem last Saturday.

They are all very accomplished singers.

But, I really don't want to tune into a test match to listen to a perfect-pitch Konsert because, frankly, it leaves me stone cold and frustrated.

What we want

I am quite sure that there are millions of sports fans throughout South Africa who will agree with me. Whether it is rugby, soccer or any other international sports event that requires the singing of the national anthems - we all want the emotion back.

What I see happening is most likely the implementation of an idea by one or other of our rugby administrators whose wife was probably offended by the fact that Victor Matfield or Ricky Januarie or some other Springbok was singing off key.

It's like virtually every thing else our rugby administrators do when it comes to promoting the game of rugby. They forget about the first rule of marketing - "it is not what you want to say but what the customers wants to hear."

And I reckon what the customer wants to hear is the whole damn stadium signing our anthem and not just three professional performers in suits trying desperately to look like they are on the stage at Carnegie Hall and not in the middle of a rugby field.

Rugby has just become too theatrical - wasn't Saturday a comedy of note - with the spectators being cut out of things completely.

The way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if we had Britney Spears singing our Anthem at the next world Cup.

I miss the old rugby. And I think I am even beginning to miss the streakers - especially those who ran onto the field and tackled the ref.

Man, we could have used that guy on Saturday.

Charming... blame the administrator's wife... But I do agree with everything else.
Johann 8/19/2008 9:36:35 AM
Chris again you are spot on! An even bigger frustration on Saturday was Joel and his mates rambling on about the 'emotional moment'! I said to my wife after the 15th emotional, that we must just be careful the girls on the field might just start crying before the game starts! C'mon, what happened to the passion? The guys aren't emotional - they're pumped! On adrenaline! Ag...I am just gatvol we couldn't get out of neutral on Saturday! Watch this Saturday - we are going to kill the Aussies!
Chris 8/19/2008 9:39:43 AM
Strange that at rugby matches the FULL version of the national anthem is sung but at soccer matches and certain boxing matches only a part of it sung(the black part). There is no racist like a black racist.
turbo_superboss 8/19/2008 9:46:55 AM
the same thing goes for cricket, with the loud music and MCs, they block out the atmosphere the crowd creats. Even in the little Olympics I've watched the music was too loud to experience and enjoy the atmosphere crowds can create
The Truth 8/19/2008 9:48:18 AM
They were shit! If they were trying to harmonise then they did a very poor job of it.I reckon the Bala Bros. should have the SA anthem as well after the excellent job they did with NZ's.The way that our anthem was f...d up was an omen of even worse things to come in the afternoon. It's the only reason I'm glad that my power went off at 15h05.
Bok-Bokkie 8/19/2008 9:58:21 AM
Chris you are correct and I have to agree with Johann as well. As for what happened AFTER the anthems?? Well I would prefer to forget that I ever switched the TV on. :(
TB 8/19/2008 9:58:33 AM
99% of the anthem will then not be audible, as the rugby crowds in this country only know the words to the first sentence and the last!
mo 8/19/2008 10:04:00 AM
I completely agree with your entire column, except the part where you say the singers were fine. The Bala Brothers were fine, but that other lot? c'mon, they were terrible! three grown men singing like Beast had run head first into their special place! Nkosi Sikelel' or die stem just doesn't strike fear into anyone when it's sung by a 9 year old girl(or men that sound like it.)
VG 8/19/2008 10:07:13 AM
Amen! Now where's that petition?
Mayflower 8/19/2008 10:13:39 AM
with you Chris. And Johann, you are spot-on about Joel Stransky - his commentary is a huge pain in the butt!!
Anon 8/19/2008 10:20:47 AM
Everything is so pretentious these days.
TS 8/19/2008 10:23:38 AM
3 weeks ago, NZ vs Aus, the dude that sang that anthem, now that was great. I think the word im looking for is "A cappella" - and full of emotion! definite goosebump stuff.
shoes 8/19/2008 10:33:31 AM
TS you're quite right, that was the most heart felt rendition of the anthem i've heard in years. You know that he paid his own way to NZ to sing on that day!!! Now that's passion!
Mo 8/19/2008 10:39:56 AM
The last stadium game i was at was the SA vs Italy game at Newlands. I felt no pride and joy when I sang the anthem. Firstly, I have NO idea what I'm singing in first part of it, and secondly, I don't think anyone else does either! The whole anthem just falls flat, and then the thunder explodes once we hit "Die Stem" I agree with Chris where he says at soccer games, they only sing the first part! so at Rugby, can't we just sing the last part? i'm not racist. I just have no clue what I'm singing.
Spot on 8/19/2008 11:09:50 AM
Spot on. Now how does it get to change?
Dutchman 8/19/2008 11:18:23 AM
I rather listen to one sided Aussies commentate, than Joel waffling on with that voice that goes up my backside. We must decide what are we going to sing and what does it mean.Maybe we are not patriotic enough to care(me included).Otherwise i would have learned the words and the meaning. The USA has a flag on there house and it seems that they sing there Anthem even for breakfast.
Ian 8/19/2008 11:19:20 AM
I sang my lungs out for the whole anthem! I didn't realise that the Broers were screwing it up on TV, normally when I watch on TV I sing too. The only way to bring a culture of singing our anthem is to believe it is right and proud to sing it. If there is a voice over, everyone will be too embarrassed to sing it! Let's have some heart and get Lance Klusener or Polly to sing it Durban??
cj 8/19/2008 11:25:39 AM
Look up the Lovedale English Translation and maybe you might then have a clue. This is our country for pete's sake - no matter your politics, learn the anthem and what it stands for, it's the least you can do. And that goes for everyone, soccer fans included.
VLS 8/19/2008 11:35:30 AM
Boet, your comment is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in my life. I regularly watch and attend soccer games as well as boxing tournaments and the anthem has never been cut in two. Ever. The fact that you feel that the anthem has a 'black and white part' is telling. Get over yourself you ignorant bigot.
Speedy 8/19/2008 11:46:47 AM
I have a problem with us being the only country that basically sings 3 Anthems/languages as our national anthem. The fact that we have 3 languages in our national anthem proves what a divided nation we are. Why cant we have 1 language that every one can understand and sing in unit?. Why must we always be divided by color and language? Rainbow Nation -- yeah right
GlendaN 8/19/2008 11:51:46 AM
I remember the big scandal in 1995 (I think) when the Boks were going to play Wales and were accused of not knowing the words to the new anthem. Went to do a story on their vocal coaching for a SA Sunday newspaper. From then on, I always got a bit emotional watching them because playing Wales that weekend, with the reputation of the Welsh singers plus the Welsh Men's Choir supporting Wales, the new Boks sang their guts out, and were word perfect. no vocal skills, but loads of guts and emotion.
Matrix 8/19/2008 12:17:09 PM
Heh, Heh, then there are MANY in the crowd that dont know the words of the new national anthem. Could not be at the game & switched to another channel untill singing was over. Why can SA not also have a "ha-ka" like NZ? Being in/out-Tune would then not matter. Zulu shield & spears?? Hey, its all about intimidation!!!
Rugga 8/19/2008 12:23:01 PM
Chris, what was even more frustrating for me was the administrators not having microphones on the field for the NZ war cry. It?s not the Haka, I just forgot what that one is called.
Valiant 8/19/2008 12:27:05 PM
When I was in high school our "skool lied" was sang a specific way, we where a technical school so the odd 1200 boys singing together made it flippen great! the one day some fifty year old English teacher still living with her parents had a look at the music for our "skool lied" and realised we sang it incorrectly, hence the melody changed and the "skool lied changed" the woman ripped out our balls and nobody wanted to sing any more, funny how our rugby went for shite after that.
Valiant 8/19/2008 12:29:37 PM
The singers, I'm usually so pumped up in front the TV! I jump up and down...get goose bumps and sing the whole anthem uit volle bors!! Even my dog gets psyched up!
francois 8/19/2008 12:30:03 PM
i did not watch the game, so maybe i musinderstand the situation - but if you want to sing while performers are singing on the field surely you are able to?? You are not in grade 1 and administrators cannot stop adults who feels the urge to sing. So wheres the problem?
paul 8/19/2008 12:30:06 PM
Next time The All Blacks play at home watch the crowd and most of the players. Hardly anyone sings the first part because its in Maori(?) but they sing the second half as its in English. Its not because they dont want to sing the Maori bit, its because they dont know the words - same with SA's anthem. So forget all the race crap. And I agree the Bala Bros were great and the Broers were rubbish - chicks sound much better singing the SA anthem. Paul
G 8/19/2008 12:36:06 PM
Yes bring the National Anthem into place - "die Stem". "Uit die blou van onse Hemel...." then the real sport spirit will also get back into place.
KevinD 8/19/2008 12:45:50 PM
The trouble with South African supporters is that they are too shy to sing in public. Overseas, they sing in pubs and at parties all the time so they don't have a complex. Also, us "manne" don't want to admit that even after so many years since 1994, many have still not learned the words to the Xhosa or English parts -Just listen to any crowd and notice the volume change for the middle verse. Come on MANNE, GET OVER YOUR SHYNES, LEARN ALL THE WORDS OFF PAT AND SING OUT AS A PROUD SOUTH AFRICAN
DanieV 8/19/2008 12:47:47 PM
Singing the anthem in the stadium always makes things happen. Let them have their artists to start of with, but please lets have a couple of mikes around the stadium with one or two between the players. Teh artists only need to be background. While we are at it - why not bring back the impi - now that always psyched me up at a test. A perfect way to get the team and crowd going as well as a not so subtle intimidation method against the opposition
Chris 8/19/2008 12:49:23 PM
It's not just the anthems they've gutted. TV has taken all the drama out of the Haka by trying to get all artsy and closeup and mobile. Just aim one camera at them, full on, the whole team in shot, and keep it STILL. The All-Blacks will do the rest.
Lionel 8/19/2008 12:54:00 PM
I was at the game and pity that the sound system was so loud that it was distorting. I was amazed at how many coloureds supported the All Blacks and sang the NZ anthem. I thought I was going to be the only NZ supporter. The behaviour by many SA supporters and swearing at the ref and linesmen illustrates SA's true colours.
KARIN 8/19/2008 1:03:08 PM
The only person who knows exactly how to sing the anthem at the correct pace, the perfect volume, and with passion, is Claire Johnston. And I've noticed that, when she sings, we always win. Now is that a co-incidence or what?
Ryan 8/19/2008 1:05:40 PM
What really grated me even more was the fact that they didn't have any microphones close by for the Haka. It's just not the same watching a bunch of mutes doing the Haka.....poor effort by our local broadcasters.
Mango Groove 8/19/2008 1:09:33 PM
I reackon bring back Claire Johnson or PJ Powers, those ladies knew how to sing the anthemn...
Alex 8/19/2008 1:13:48 PM
When I go to a rugby match I let rip with the whole anthem, even the parts that I struggle with a bit and don't know the meaning of the words. I still give it a full go. Why, because it's the right thing to do!! It's not the three languages used in our anthem that divides us, but rather the lack of effort to simply accept what is a beautiful anthem, and sing it with effort and pride every time!
