Diamonds not all black and white

Chris Roper

So my jeweller friend phones me, and tells me he's being driven mad by doddering rich Sandton housewives who keep wandering into his store and asking for black diamonds.

Apparently they think it's the next big craze, and they want tasteful tennis bracelets made up for their young, blonde, twitchy daughters.

Ha, if they only knew what their daughters were actually getting up to with black diamonds, they'd accelerate their emigration plans, instead of waiting for the maid to die and their husbands to siphon enough money into the offshore accounts. But you can't blame them for being confused, everywhere you look nowadays, people in marketing, advertising and the media are writing about black diamonds.

What are black diamonds, you ask? They're expensive, useless, yet pretty lumps, originating in South Africa, where the high pressure and temperatures on the ground enable their formation. Once they're spotted by big business, say a De Beers, they're whisked off overseas and sold on the open market.

The slightly inferior ones eventually end up being used locally, and when I say used, I mean that in every possible sense. But especially in the sense of, here, buy a crap BMW you can't afford and work the rest of your life paying it off. Amandla!

'Black' diamonds are not truly black

My extensive knowledge of diamonds comes from Wikipedia, where I'm very pleased to see the following: "Diamonds can occur in nearly any colour. 'Black' diamonds are not truly black, but rather contain numerous dark inclusions that give the gems their dark appearance. When the colour is saturated enough in yellow or brown diamonds, a stone may be referred to as a fancy coloured diamond by the gem trade, otherwise they are graded for colour in the normal colour range of white diamonds."

The good news for all you white businessmen (and white businesswomen, of course - 14.7% of top management jobs, apparently), is that black diamonds are actually white diamonds with a dark appearance. You give them enough yellow or brown, and you get a fancy coloured diamond like Trevor Manuel, which is far less threatening.

And once the advertising industry has used its propaganda budget of millions and millions of rands to turn them into moneygrubbing little white people, possibly Americans, these black diamonds in the rough will be the finished product. Twinkly little white diamonds set into the dog collar worn by the smug, slavering brute that is the capitalist fat cat.

Re-reading the mixed metaphors in that last sentence, I realise I've degenerated from satire into delirium, so maybe I should recap my point clearly and concisely, if I can work it out. And that point is...

Struggle diamonds

This black diamonds crap is just the marketing and advertising industry spinning another way to get their clients to cough up money. It's the usual trick of giving something a name so that you can pretend you understand it. It's also damned insulting to conclude that the fact that we now have a black middle class, post-94, means that this black middle class is going to mimic exactly the greed and hackneyed aspirations of a generic white middle class. Obviously, I'm excluding the likes of Tony Yengeni and Allan Boesak, who I believe are now known as "struggle diamonds" or "conflict diamonds".

Struggle diamonds (also known as blood diamonds or dirty diamonds), come from areas of struggle, and are usually sold clandestinely to finance a warlord's activities. Jacob "bring me my gold-plated machine gun" Zuma, for example, could be called a struggle diamond.

Perhaps advertising agencies could consider selling some targeted advertising to struggle diamonds? I'm sure Mercedes-Benz would be interested, for example. But in the meantime, well done my black comrades. You are now truly equal with the white man, because the marketing industry has decided you can afford membership to the buy now, pay forever club.

Sheesh Chris, I'm not sure I could understand what you're getting at - even if I read the article a couple more times. - EG

  cashless black diamonds.
07/09/2007 10:47
Thanks chris for telling black people indirectly that they start to save/bank thier fortunes rather than buying from white own business. - blade4mbeki

  Your point?
07/09/2007 10:53
What's your point really?? - DJ Beema

  Hendrik
07/09/2007 10:55
Ironically, in a twist of fate... emigration seems to be the "in thing". Good point though. Chris, even with some grammatical errors, still can like to be delicious article. - Mike

  Totally I agree with you?..
07/09/2007 10:58
I really hate this ?Black diamond? staff, I mean since the days of PDI?s this is the worst description ever for me as an African Nguni. I wish people could stop call us names and find other ways of creating consumerism (whaat???). Nice article as always. - Mlu

07/09/2007 11:00
What? Can you please make some sense? Nothing worse than an illiterate hack. What are you trying to say? Learn to spell. Also to use capital letters. Capitalisation and punctuation is the difference between "helping your uncle Jack, off a horse" and "helping your uncle jack off a horse". The struggle... struggling to spell. - Blah

  Black Diamonds
07/09/2007 11:11
What are you really on about Chris? - Stoich

  I agree with Mlu
07/09/2007 11:18
Why do we have to find the need to categorize a race. Are we not South Africans? So why Black Diamond. It's like the Developer who built our homes calling one a star, one a diamond and the worst one a dog.Fedup - Claudette

  What's this "black diamond" stuff?
07/09/2007 11:21
I refuse to accept this labelling of all black professionals as "black diamonds" for reasons that it presupposes excessive/reckless consumerism, unnecessary credit acquisition, and mindless wealth exhibition. Maybe it fits well with the likes of the Khondile guy who called himself a "black diamond" in one article last week. - Sva

  My goodness
07/09/2007 11:22
This article reeks of something...can someone help me here? - Anonymous

  what crap
07/09/2007 11:22
i would like to bea south african not a black diamond or aa black....just plain south african cause that is what i am.... - blacque

  Chris go home
07/09/2007 11:24
Chris, with due respect, his article is a load of crap!!!!!! And it doesnt even deserve my effort in writing this. - What?

  White daughters crap...
07/09/2007 11:27
What you're saying is that if you found out that yo daughter is acquinted with a black diamond you'd emigrate. It's a pity that there are people like you and given a platform to write about their underlying racism amd dislike of blacks in general. Blacks are here to stay whatever name is given to them and you better live with it or accelerate yo EMIGRATION plans.Nuff Said... - DJ Beema

  Derogatory
07/09/2007 11:30
His point people is that it's derogatory and a big hype being made about nothing really! If u look @ definitions of so called 'black diamonds' you'll conclude that it includes most of your educated NON-WHITE youngsters. The 'marketing' world has basically made fools of themselves once again...HIGHLY in-sensitive considering SA's background if you ask me.I'm a 'black diamond' or should i say 'brown' and proud of it,I do save though contrary to popular belief, so stop categorising & generalising. - Sick and tired of it all!!!

this rabbit hole was dug with precise sarcasm..
07/09/2007 11:31
some constructive sarcasm... works well with the pudding we're currently getting served in parliament. - ElectroMan

  Chill everybody
07/09/2007 11:41

07/09/2007 11:41
You are just racist son-of-b*&%T!!! Go to Europe! - Tazz

  whaz ur point ...?
07/09/2007 11:41
Whites save for holidays and call it investment .. and black slave for rims. Any difference ..? its just a matter of preference ..!! - Seja

  Never!
07/09/2007 11:43
I refuse and always will to be patronised and reclassified. This propaganda has got most of the black youth thinking they're rich; if you stay in one of those formely white surbubs then you're a 'black diamond' but where is the wealth? Or at least the money? Then we can call Madisha a 'black bag diamond' - Luther

  Black Diamonds
07/09/2007 11:45
Cool column-as always! Thanks - JB

  DJ Beema
07/09/2007 11:56
DJ, I don't know how you worked out Chris is rascist - read it again and you'll see it is the opposite. And maybe look up the meaning of the word "satire". I think you were just looking for an excuse to grind your own (rascist) axe. - JV

  We're all suckers then
07/09/2007 12:00
Interesting point dude ~ here's a question for you: do you think the ANC would prefer a conflict over a commercial grade diamond to be the next president? - Greg

  Brilliant, like diamonds
07/09/2007 12:07
Brilliant article Chris. What are the five "C"s again? Colour, Capital, Car, Cause and Cash. - Chris van Eeden

  good points!
07/09/2007 12:08
Excellent points - u nailed it on the head! I only hope you target market understands it! - JK

  Brilliant!
07/09/2007 12:19
Although a couple of your less literate readers seemed not to get the point at all. Ah, maybe someday.. - Rouie

  What a bunch of...?
07/09/2007 12:33
Ladies and gents, there you have it.This is what happens when a wannabe writer starts to lose it.Chris what are you taking ? - jeff

  Thanks that was cute
07/09/2007 12:39
Thanks I enjoyed that and had a good chuckle.. It was suppose to be funny you lot... always so quick to squabble! And to my black bruthas and sistas - a diamond is something precious and valuable so why don't you rather take it as a compliment? With all South Africans, black or white - the glass is always half empty rather than half full. We need to start being more positive. - May

  Tongue In Cheek
07/09/2007 12:41
Some people really need to lighten up, Tazz what is your issue? Do you not understand tongue in cheek writing? Chris was not being racist at all, mearly trying to open our eyes to industry and their exploitation of the 'new' black middle class. Geez, get a life... - Glenn

Has anyone seen a Black Diamond presentation?
07/09/2007 12:47
Nice article,i always enjoy a creative rant and rave. But, has anyone who complains about Black Diamond research actually gone through the 100+ slide presentation? It's not as simple as ranting writers make it out to be! - Mark

try again, badly written article, whats the point
07/09/2007 12:47
the badly written that i have come across, what are you trying to say, what messag are putting across, a mish mash of this and that, eish give us a break and research your articles cebza - Cebza

  SPLAT !!!
07/09/2007 12:48
Once again a well-written piece of satire. Unfortunately there are now splat marks on a lot of walls where this went right over people's heads. PS ... Does this also mean that Manto babbelaasaming belongs to the Blue Diamond (old cane spirit brand) class ? - mrakm

  Jeff
07/09/2007 13:01
U're an id*ot and your ignarance appalls me, can?t help but wonder how you switched that computer on. Did you just call Chris a ?wannabe writer?? Then you surely don?t know your real father. What are you taking Jeff? - Luther

  Good one
07/09/2007 13:12
I have to admit, I only understood half of your article, but the confusion was worth it for the entertainment the comments provided. A good example of something worthless made popular by advertising would be those horrible crocs... - Amused

  Calm down guys.......
07/09/2007 13:13
Read before you start commenting, Chris has got a point what the hell is a black diamond???? We must never allow who haven't walked on our path to define us.....By the way if you want to see black diamonds watch Exit wounds(a movie). - Mlu

  TOTALY STONED
07/09/2007 13:22
What have u smoked Cris? - Bongz

Black Diamonds are a figment of somebody's imagination
07/09/2007 13:28
Well written...black diamonds or whatever they are dont exist. There might be a couple of thousand super-rich BEE blacks but the majority, the other 40 million, are downright poor. This whole black diamond theory just stinks of cheap marketing. - lex

  Thanx
07/09/2007 13:30
Though the article itself was funny and interesting, you lot are even better. To all diamonds, non-diamonds, and stones, don't forget your commies and twestion marks....happy friday. - Journo

  Good Piece
07/09/2007 13:34
But seemingly over the head of most of the readers. So Chris will unfortunately go back to his old kind of stuff again... Pity. - KoosS

  BlacDiamond
07/09/2007 13:50
Your attempt at metaphors, or any use of the English language is laughable, secondly, clearly you dont understand the topic you attempt to write about. - JoziWarrior

  As always
07/09/2007 15:09
As always, sarcasm goes right over the head... good article, Chris. - Amused

Dude, leave the Crocs alone, it's not the marketing, it's the comfort. Yes, they are hideous, especially the neon colours(uggh!) but you have to wear them to understand. Yes, yes, I KNOW they're really ugly. Anyway, nice to see some people got the article. Nice one Chris, don't let the illiterate ones get to you. Have a sparkling weekend everybody! Racist(!)croc-wearing non-black diamond. - Rouie
