It's only a lie if you lose
26/03/2008 08:41 - (SA)
Chris Roper
So Hillary Clinton made up a story about enduring sniper fire while on a visit to Bosnia, and that august body of opinion known as "The American People" (not to be confused with "The Village People," although as badly dressed) are upset because Clinton lied to them.
From way down here on the African continent, scarred survivors of a thousand and one Empire lies, it's hard to see what the fuss is all about. After all, the present US president got voted in for another term despite the fact that he lied about WMDs, so why shouldn't Hillary Clinton also have her Weapons of Made-up Destruction?
And why on earth are the American running hogs of capitalism, or the media as they prefer to be known, acting so surprised because a Clinton is a little economical with the truth?
That other Clinton guy, Bill, is of course famous for his own lie, when he proclaimed, "That woman never inhaled my penis", or whatever it was he said. That was also a lie about a WMD, or Weapon of Mini Dick to use the full term. Surely the American people are used to being lied to by now? Seriously, what's all the fuss?
The Hillary camp says Mrs Clinton didn't lie, she just "misspoke". Fantastic! Sometimes it's hard to believe that we still have a language called English. Why not just call it American and acknowledge that we've all lost the language wars? The way US politicians make English work for them would be an instructive lesson for Humpty Dumpty.
Some of you might have forgotten who Humpty Dumpty is, so let me remind you. He's a character in a famous American movie called Alice in Wonderland. Here's a snippet from the book that came out after the movie.
"'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less.'
"'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'
"'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master - that's all.'"
Blame Disney
Beautiful stuff, and I'm sure Alice in Wonderland is required viewing for all American politicians. Hillary apparently also claims to have brought peace to Northern Ireland, which some people are saying is a slight exaggeration. But come on - Americans apparently believe they won World War II single-handedly, so why not elect a president who can creatively add to their list of foreign affairs triumphs?
I'm afraid I blame Walt Disney, the man who wrote the American Constitution, for this state of affairs. It appears to have always been difficult for American politicians to separate fact from fiction, and that's because American artists and writers have always been so damn good at creating fantastic fictional worlds that are so much better than the real thing. They're so good, that the rest of the world buys into American myths wholesale, and I use the word wholesale advisedly.
Even here in sunny South Africa, where corrupt politicians have flourished for many happy decades, people are choosing to believe in Barack Obama, the Great White Hope.
Many hardened news journalists have said to me how great his speech on race in America was, and how it should have been a South African politician making that speech. They seem to have forgotten that our politicians do make that speech, over and over, and nothing much changes. The only difference is that Barack Obama is being created in the spin labs of Atlanta and Hollywood, so we're more inclined to trust him.
If Obama wins, it'll be because Clinton lied. If Clinton wins, it'll be because she only misspoke. "'When I make a word do a lot of work like that,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'I always pay it extra.'"
And that's what it comes down to, I'm afraid. Whoever has the most money wins the race, and whoever wins the race gets to decide what history means for the foreseeable future.
Chris Roper is the Editor-in-Chief of 24.com, and a big fan of Lewis Carroll, the guy who wrote the book of the movie.

Lies and deception 26/03/2008 09:09
Great article Chris, it makes for a very interesting read. Although tongue in cheek it is almost the reality of the situation. Thank you for a fine article. - Nicky |

politicians....... 26/03/2008 09:12
...are corrupt the world over as they pretend to work for society but in reality work for their next election. Because politicians run democracies, democracy is inherently a corrupt or corruptible system, depending on the stage of development. One way to control this: demand that all politicians live in glass houses and have no privacy as in a reality show. With so much material around, we would need no more soapies on TV. - Benzo |

Too true 26/03/2008 09:17
Love your columns Chris. True, the history books are always written by the victors. But it doesn't really matter who writes what, these days most Americans (and sadly South Africans too) either can't or won't read anything more challenging than blurb on the back of the DVD case - another fan of Rev. The Red, White and Taboo 26/03/2008 09:20
Are you related to Mr. Roper of "Three's Company" fame? Because you're just as funny. My money's on the table, that this US election will be made into a Hollywood movie. In fact, the candidates are probably reading off their lines because the script has already been written.

Understand the system 26/03/2008 09:29
No doubt exists that the political system is severely flawed. However, once you understand this, you make a conscious decision to vote not for a CANDIDATE, but rather for the protection of your interests. In other words, in the US, if you want the right to bear arms, want to stop illegal immigrants from flooding the country, and believe in low taxes, then you vote for the Republican candidate, even if you can't stand him. Forget the idealism. Just use the system to protect whats important to you. - Philosopher |

Enduring lies 26/03/2008 09:32
Lets see, Hillary lied about sniper fire in Bosnia. Our politicians lie about the arms deal (amongst other things). Unfortunately, the wrong types of people, are the right types of people to be politicians. Poly = many, tics = blood sucking creatures. - Sinudeity |

Lairs, damn lairs 26/03/2008 09:37
Chris, i heard a speech in the morning by Mugabe, where he was ranting, Lairs, damn lairs refering to Bush and Brown, but honestly, coming from a man who rigs election results as well as H.I.V results who do we believe? Truth is all politicains lie about everything including their own names in some cases, we need to take what they say with a pinch of salt. Great article, eye opener for sure. Thanks - TAFADZWA |

life in America is one long Hollywood movie 26/03/2008 09:39
Yup, too much time spent watching Disney, The Hoff and other assorted cartoon characters. Eventually, Americans believe all they spew must be true, cos you can do it in the movies - and like the movies, if the scene is not correct the first time, do another take and re-arrange it suit you. A friend has been in America for two years and I can see how she is losing touch with reality. Quite scary! - jenny |

Benzo - I AGREE 26/03/2008 09:40
Have a politician reality TV show. ALL politicians should have film crews with them 24/7. We can watch on TV all the decisions they make. The ONLY thing I want, is transparency. Allright, 3 things: Love, peace, and free software. - Sinudeity |

Relevance 26/03/2008 09:43
It is slightly relevant that she lied, in that it proves that she is "more of the same". Whether Obama is any better, I don't know. But he did release his tax returns immediately when requested to do so. Having said that, the great Douglas Adams once said: "Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job." - Dan |

Lies vs Truth 26/03/2008 10:17
We all know that Yank politics are about upstaging and belittling your and making voters question the integrity of theie opponent. In SA the reverse is true, the more skeletons and lies you have told, the higher you rank on the political scale. Heaven forbid that you may have ever told the truth, you will never get into parliament here! The old adage rings true, "You know when a politician is lying, his/her lips move". - Gee PMB |

Lairs, damn lairs 26/03/2008 10:59
It goes to show just how shallow minded our politicains are, if one can not tell a single truth how then do we trust him with our economy? What credentials do our local politicians have? Do they even have a college diploma? No wonder the economy is collapsing, all they think about is taking a shower to prevent HIV,and marrying more women, what a joke - tafadzwa |

Lairs, damn lairs 26/03/2008 11:07
what this country needs is a leader, not just a president. I think the minimum requirements for presidential candidacy should be a degree in Economics, if you dont understand economics, how can you possibly make quality decisions that affect the economy. No wonder we in a mess, they probably dont lie, they are just ignorant and only speak to cover that up & resulting in false promises and excuses. We need educated leaders NOW!!! - Tafadzwa |

america - Shame 26/03/2008 12:21
I think we should really feel sorry for americans (they do not deserve a captital letter), but try the best I can, I will never feel sorry for them. I believe they are arrogant, lying, thieving and incompetent. I would rather eat s*^t or die of hunger than say I believe america has done anything worthwhile. I suppose they believe it, they have to to still their conscience. I-H-A - SM |
