Itty, bitty media madness

Chris Roper

There's a vast, yawning gap that exists between us and the rest of the world, and I'm not talking about our Minister of Foreign Affairs here. I'm talking about the fact that in South Africa, most of us have been brought up to not take a lot of crap from anyone, and we don't respond well to threats from other people, unless they're actually holding a gun.

This is a principle that I've applied to business, and one that I've also tried to apply in the editorial policies of any product that I've worked on. I've got a team of writers, video producers and editors who work for me, and let me tell you, it's like herding cats who can spell. They're always ready for a fight, because they believe passionately in what they do. This means that I spend a lot of time forbidding them to respond to readers, advertisers, or their parents, before they've had a day to cool down.

But alas, despite the fact that I look after them so nicely, for very little thanks, not one of them bothered to stop me before I responded, shooting from the hip, to the publicist of an American actor who decided to get heavy with us.

I'm not going to tell you the name of the PR guy, because this isn't about him. I'm sure he was just doing his job, in a Dick Cheney kind of way. I am going to tell you the name of the actor, since he's blameless, and because you need to read the story we published about him so you can judge for yourself.

Sorry saga

The sorry saga starts when Megan, our Movies editor, decides to interview Stelio, an actor from Camps Bay who is making it good in America. She writes up a nice interview, produces a podcast, and them makes the mistake of sending off a draft copy to the publicist as a courtesy.

Unfortunately, in the draft she sends, the blurb says something about the actor having had "bit parts" in TV series. This gets changed by another sub before it's published, because it's clear that these are pretty meaty parts. Although this whole paragraph is starting to read suspiciously like a Viagra advertisement, you probably get the gist of it.

First e-mail from the PR guy (let's call him George, after the guy who invaded Iraq), arrives:

"Megan... It's basically slander (a sueable offense here) to even imply that someone with a healthy and very respected career is a 'bit part' actor? One of the written sections on your iPod presentation specifically said of Stelio "he's had bit parts on Ugly Betty & Law & Order". Not only is this incredibly insulting to Stelio but it's factually untrue... And here in the Unites States unless you're writing a review it's common practice to have pre-approval prior to deadline and prior to print when it comes to entertainment regardless of whether the media company is the NY Times or the Preoria Agitator. This is in place to avoid the exact situation we have here. Unless you can remove the section about him having "bit parts" I can only hope that Stelio never sees this and neither do any of his fans/friends/family which is highly unlikely as his official site averages over 30 000 hits per month with over 50% of them coming from South Africa."

Since I've trained Megan, using a rolled-up newspaper (and it wasn't easy, I assure you) to not respond to nasty mails before checking with me, she sends me the mail. Alas. For some reason my hackles rise at the thought that someone assumes we ever allow third parties to have "pre-approval" of anything we write. So I respond:

"Dear George

"I doubt very much that any reputable American publication allows a veto on entertainment content written about minor actors."

I also pointed out that we never published anything about his actor's bit parts, since we're not Heat magazine. So he bounces back, using uppercase for a bit of SHOCK and AWE tactics:

"I DO APOLOGIZE IF THIS "BIT PARTS" REFERENCE NEVER WENT TO PRINT but it's what was sent to me. I am not desperate for media coverage on Stelio and we have several other interviews/articles going to print in South Africa, Greece, New York, Los Angeles, etc and his new show premiers in a few weeks and he's going into production on Corrado very shortly so if you want to pull the article; knock yourself out; you'll be one the cutting off your nose to spite your face! Because it will get back to him and I'll make sure Marcus Brewster and Peter and several other relevant outlets are made aware."

Okay, now this idiot is actually threatening me with some kind of Mafia network of PR agencies, an Opus Dei of public relations that will destroy my business if I dare be nasty to one of the members of their secret cult. But I'm still trying to be civil, so I mail him back.

"George, I know you're just trying to do your job here, but I must just point out that all those publications and people you name are not in fact media publications or journalists, but PR organs or film companies. I suggest you ponder the difference."

Oh dear. Now I've really set him off.

"First you and your inept employees refer to one of my clients as a bit part actor then you call him a minor actor now you engage in a verbal tumultuous rant with me? You, an online chief editor in SOUTH AFRICA is going to tell a NY publicist who has had their finger on the beat of the industry's pulse for over 20 years, how to do their job. Let's see how NASPERS feel about your unprofessionalism. I know the exact person (PEOPLE in fact) that you're accountable to so let's see how they feel about this."

Distasteful

It would be funny if it wasn't so distasteful. A publicist who can only manage to get his client 15 000 non-South African hits a month on his website, is telling me that I'm inferior because I come from South Africa. The arrogance is appalling. And if I had fifty bucks for every time someone tried to get me fired, I wouldn't need the damn job.

I must confess, I've never appreciated the people in our own PR industry before. In my experience, none of them are anything like the shrill, petulant "George". Many of them have told me that I'm a despicable, overly-critical git, but they've all told me to my face, and they've mostly been right. But in this case, the irony is that the article in question is nothing if not glowing.

So why the kneejerk response from the NY publicist who's been trying to feel the beat of the industry's pulse for 20 years? (Tip for George - possibly your finger is in the wrong place? Pull it out, is my advice.)

My best guess is that the cult of the American celebrity has gone mad. Anybody who professes to be anybody in the entertainment industry appears to believe that they have the power of life and death over people. While this might be case with Tom Cruise, it gets a little silly when publicists believe that anybody has the right to do it.

  Another example of American intelect
09/04/2008 08:55
Very funny article, I enjoyed it and it only proved that Americans really are a breed appart. Give this guy hell! - Doorboot

  Funny...
09/04/2008 08:56
Its funny, for 2,5 years my daily working life was made out of dealing with Americans. Not to be "lelik" to them or anything, but it makes you glad being a South African, in my case more specifically, being an Afrikaner. Funny... - Coetzee

  Shame, poor "George"
09/04/2008 09:02
It's probably "little man syndrome". - JP Strauss

  High five!
09/04/2008 09:05
Your columns are always a pleasure to read - a great and humerous start to my morning. Keep up the great work!!! - Lauren

  Who...?
09/04/2008 09:14
Who is Stelio? Must be a minor actor after all. If he was anyone important then I guess the publicist would have just ignored her comment. Americans are generally so full of themselves so his attitude doesn't surprise me. But I guess nobody really messes with you, so 'vat hom wagter'. - Charlie

  LOL!!
09/04/2008 09:18
Brilliant. Gotta love the way this guy believes NY (a city) is more important than our poor old little SOUTH AFRICA (a country). What a twat. Lol!! - Dave

  publicist
09/04/2008 09:24
How utterly divine to read someone else's mail trying to talk sense to an idiot. Nice change from my own! - taurus

  I'm speechless
09/04/2008 09:25
I work in the film production industry and am constantly amused and (sometimes) appalled at the arrogance of some American production crew. Of course, they usually get their comeuppance by eventually having to ask the locals for help. - Les

  Yeah Chris
09/04/2008 09:27
I felt like ringing his little red neck for you.Thats the South African way. You're right we dont take lightly to idle threats.NOW you know why the Americans wank with a Y!To leave the "bit parts" out. - psycobabble

Ha ha ha - USA, USA
09/04/2008 09:32
Now we see that the slanderous and written-purely-for-reaction rubbish put out by roper offends people everywhere. roper likes to contend that is only locals that object to sub-standard and legally actionable slander from useless columnists, like him. But it would seems his brand of obnoxious ignorance has the same affect the world over! Send roper back to the mailroom... - Danny

  Classic
09/04/2008 09:33
Thanks Chris, this made for great reading! Unfortunately your piece led to another hit on Stelio's site because I had no idea who the guy was and Google answered! Still, I wouldn't recognise him if I had to see him in the street. - munkychunks

  Shame shame.
09/04/2008 09:35
He's just overly defense (attack is the best defence they say) because 1: he's probably 10 inches shorter than most men, and 2: he's representing a small part / bit actor (granted, who might be good and make it big, but I doubt he's on Tom Cruise's speed dial). You should've known better, and rather refered to him as an "up and coming actor who's freelancing and appearing on many shows".... - Marcel

  Breindood
09/04/2008 09:38
OK this guy can officially be declared "breindood" so they can shut of the machines and whatever life support systems that keeps him going. The world does not need another "suurstofdief". We already have too many of them here. - Boer

  Go for it
09/04/2008 09:39
Go, Chris, go! Great column. Thanks for the entertainment. And, to use a pertinent Afrikaans expression: Gee hom gas! - Jan

  Such an unbelievable hypocrit!
09/04/2008 09:40
You are so far up your own arse that you can't even be honest. Your and 24's prime activity is responding to criticism in a negative and highly unprofessional manner. You, personally, are the worst example of this given your recent record! You are are an unmitigated hypocrit! What a complete chop! - Angus

  Ja boet
09/04/2008 09:40
Had the unfortunate experience of going to California a couple of years ago and agree that they really are a bunch of plonkers. They're shallow and ignorant to say the least. And arrogant! I could never live there... give them hell :) - chops

  New York legal
09/04/2008 09:41
Hee-hee tell the plonker to sue you in an SA court. Then he'll find out the meaning of time wasting. In 3 years time when the case comes before the court and he's wasted hundreds of thousands in legal fees he'll still wonder who "Stelio" is. - Ant

  Yawn
09/04/2008 09:42
Lovely weather today... - Theresa

  Careful, careful
09/04/2008 09:46
Oops, I just worried this correspondence might end up on George's desk (I'm referring to George W in the Oval office!) which could lead him to decide to send his cruise missiles because we need some democracy! - Retief

You guys live off sensation and tabloid style behaviour
09/04/2008 09:48
The ongoing push for readers to boost 24's presence is based on a strategy of writing offensive material about movies, entertainment, fashion etc to create drama and reaction. When they do get a reaction they stamp on it as abusing their freedom of expression, further inches of print ensue to flame the fires of discontent. The entire editorial staff of 24 should be retrained on how to deliver quality product. Their only skill is 'spelling' and for that they have MS Word - Greg Anderton

  good one
09/04/2008 09:48
You know, if you ask an American to name you a country beginning with ?U?, they would probably give you the answer ?Utah?, some even think that Fidel Castro is a singer, so this ?little man syndrome? as JP Strauss so correctly puts it, doesn?t surprise me. I tend to read quite a bit, but obviously not enough, or perhaps I am reading the wrong stuff, as I also don?t know who Stelio is. Chris, your columns are great and inspire us, itty, bitty, wannabe writers. - TJ

  Brilliant Chris!! Luv your writing
09/04/2008 09:50
I must apologise for my ignorance, I don't even know who Stelio is, I went to Google him and his profile still does not ring a bell!! Your article has made my morning, I hope 'George' sees it and reads our comments ha ha... - Amused

  Opinionated idiot
09/04/2008 09:52
Dont like our journalists. They have lived for so long with the sense that they are meaningful that they actually believe it. Compared with international journalists and newspapers our guys just dont cut it. The PR person has probably never dealt with such arrogance from a bit piece writer in his life. The opinion of Who? From Where? What has this idiot roper actually ever done? Go get a real job! - Walter

  WTF
09/04/2008 09:59
You stick it to him Chris, what a knob! And I liked the authorial asides! I think the problem is not only endemic to the US PR industry, I reckon it's a case of national megalomania. - Andre

  To be honest roper...
09/04/2008 10:02
Come on, you have got to be kidding! Right? You know that you and your team have overstepped the mark! Learn humility. Apologise to all you have offended and do the noble thing...resign. You can not possibly believe you are the best person for the job. Your time has come and gone! - simon cowell

  Hmm
09/04/2008 10:03
Why so angry, Chris? - Intrigued

Seems your theory on international artists was wrong!
09/04/2008 10:07
Seems poor writting, tastless reviews and slanderous cr@p upsets everyone. It took this for you to realise it? Face facts, your little website exists in a bubble with no competition. You would not survive in the real world. Let's see you go make your mark on your own in UK, USA etc without the backing of your group of companies. Let's see what your 'talent' on its own can achieve? Doubt your mother would even read your drivel... - come uppance

  Classic - reminds me of...
09/04/2008 10:08
...a comment in a school magazine written by a 5 year old about the physical characteristics of a dolphin, and this could be likened to this George fellow. "... the dolphin breathes through an arsehole in it's head" - Nick

  slanderous? how exactly?
09/04/2008 10:11
I'm just a journalist in a third world country, so I guess I don't know as much as a PR exec in an American city, but if "bit part" can be deemed as slanderous, then what the hell would he call working as an extra? I'm sure Stelio wouldn't have cared so much about a minor detail that wasn't even published anyway! PR writing by definition has to maintain a positive image of the client in question, which often leads to misconstrued and false reporting.. tell George to leave it to the journalists - LF

  Danny...
09/04/2008 10:19
One could argue that your submission might need some correction on the whole (note: I did not say hole) Check your spelling, punctuation and syntax - now go to the back of the class. - Nick

  American Publicist
09/04/2008 10:21
Who is Stelio? - MC

  sigh sigh, ..sigh, .......sigh.........sigh
09/04/2008 10:26
sorry Chris. What a classic. I'm sure not all Americans are like this idiot, but still... I enjoy his stupidity. I can't help it, but please send him a map of the world and ask him to point where South Africa actually is... I've seen a few of them point to Australia... - Definitely not American...

  skim & delete
09/04/2008 10:30
funny but childish. Nothing to write home about. Certain email deserves the delete button. Have you got one? - Benzo

come uppance, if this website exists in a bubble
09/04/2008 10:33
then why, pray tell, are you reading it and (shock horror!) taking the time out of your busy schedule to comment on "drivel"? If you don't even think Roper's mother would read it, why are you? Don't you have more important things to do, like look at yourself in the mirror and record your own voice so that you can listen to it over and over again? If you understood anything about journalism, you'd know a review is opinion! - LF

wow, Danny, your grammar sucks but at least you can spell
09/04/2008 10:39
"roper likes to contend that is only locals that object to sub-standard and legally actionable slander from useless columnists, like him." How you managed to use a hyphen correctly but get your word order all wrong is beyond me. simon cowell (if it really is you, which i seriously doubt) you have no leg to stand on when it comes to telling someone to apologise to all the people they have offended! And, lastly, Greg Anderton, pick up the Daily Voice or Die Son. That's a tabloid, my friend. - LF

  Who the hell is Stelio?
09/04/2008 10:48
Who the hell is this guy? I should think "minor actor" is an accurate enough description. Nice going Chris! Give that idiot Yank hell. Damn twat! ;) Later - The Dude

  Corne Uppance
09/04/2008 10:58
If it is such drivel then why did you read it, twat! - Mark

Thank goodness for sensational and tabloid style beahavior
09/04/2008 11:03
What a laugh. Your email is so much more entertaining than the boring drivel I receive via email everyday. Would you mind publishing some more titbits from your inbox. A weekly dose to flame the fires of discontent would be appreciated! - Greg Anderton's alter ego

  Moving on
09/04/2008 11:10
Your guess that the cult of the American celebrity has gone mad would assume that there was at some time sanity in that world of superficial narcism. It is good for regular bowel movement, but as you can see, the article has also inspired irregular vowel movement. - Theresa

  Stelio
09/04/2008 11:13
Hey Chris - I laughed so much at your article because - having worked at heat magazine and declined to show Stelio's bits ever - i remember most of our staff being harassed for months on end to include him in the magazine. pathetic because honestly, who cares? - Journalist

I see it's not just PR people from the US ...
09/04/2008 11:19
... who don't bother to engage their brain or even finish reading the column / article before firing off a comment. Some of the people responding here seem to suffer from the same problem. Ring a bell, Danny, Simon, etc? Great column Chris. But I suppose we should all learn not to respond to the idiots out there, it only encourages them to keep talking. - marna

  Megan
09/04/2008 11:21
Guys this was actually quite funny, especially the bit about Megan and the rolled up newspaper. Hahaha. Actually Megan is probably the only one who could take offence and my bet is she won't :-) - Gail

good or bad, it's still publicity
09/04/2008 11:23
whatever happened to good publicity or bad publicity, it's still publicity? Half the people posting comments here had no idea who Stelio was before all this. At least someone here at News24 managed to generate some hype about this guy, which ironically is what George should have been doing - if he wasn't so busy editting out minor details and using euphemisms. - LF

  Stelio who?
09/04/2008 11:30
Maybe he needs to get a new PR guy. One who can find his own pulse without both hands and a flashlight. Then he won't get just bit parts. - Anymouse

  Media madness
09/04/2008 11:32
And here I am thinking I would like to write in my spare time! Enjoyable read; have always wondered what an editor did in his/her job - nice to have a brief glimpse of the not-so pleasant side. But doesn't it prove the power of a word, and how certain people interpret that word? - Dave Robbins

  Good!
09/04/2008 11:45
Sometimes we have to stand up for ourselves and that is what Chris did. Good for you. - Amia

Are your friends at 24 coming to help you Chris?
09/04/2008 11:56
As someone stated before, if you express a negative opinion on a 24 comments facility regarding the writer you will see a flurry of ripostes from inside 24's offices. As can be seen above. - simon cowell

On my last visit to LA
09/04/2008 11:57
I got chatting to one of these media types. And she asked me where in Africa I'm from. So I said no, South Africa. Its the country down at the bottom? Bottom of where? Erm the continent of Africa? Turns out she thought the entire continent was one country called Africa. Sigh... - May

  LF Proves my point exactly!
09/04/2008 12:06
LF continues the tradition! Daily Sun and 24.com are both tabloids. Hate negative criticism guys..? But what are you worried about your little column is still generating a 'buzz' - no publicity is bad publicity. No reporters, is great news! - simon cowell

  Stelio?
09/04/2008 12:10
LOL! Don't mess with Saffers. I just had to google Stelio to work out who the 'fuss' was about. Never heard of him and I know my celebrity trivia... its won me a few prizes! - Yam

  Anti Americanism - WHY?
09/04/2008 12:12
Chris, I agree with you 100% and think that George is an idiot. BUT, many comments here indicate that all Americans are idiots. I have been to the States and found Americans in general to be polite, civilized and amazingly friendly and helpful people. In general there is an enormous anti-American feeling amongst people in SA. Has any Americans ever harmed any of us? Why this hate? How can you stereotype millions of people to be all idiots? All the people I met were interesting, intelligent and friendly and I have contact with them regularly. I think it is very shallow, na? and arrogant to believe all people from such a big country are all idiots. There are idiots everywhere in all countries and societies including SA. - LM

  Hahahaha
09/04/2008 12:27
I wonder how long it'll take Stelio (whoever he is) to realise his publicist is an idiot? - Craig

  Stelio Who?
09/04/2008 12:32
Firstly, thanks for an unexpected laugh so early in the morning (in Brazil!). Funny article, and easy to relate to if you're a traveling South African. Secondly, to all the negative e-mailers: Just get a life...! - HMS
