When I first read the story of the black girl who smacked two rugby players at school, I laughed fit to bust. It's a funny world when rugby players can get "assaulted" by a girl. I mean, come on! What sort of rugby players are you? Big babies.

But then I read the finer details. According to the news report, Aviwe Mhlontlo got involved in a scuffle when she walked through a "no-blacks" zone. What! We still have petty apartheid at our schools, I fumed! Then it turns out that it's actually a piece of lawn that was labeled the U15 rugby team's victory spot last year, and it's called a "no kaffir" zone by black pupils, not white ones.

So acting on the principle that it's okay for black Americans to call themselves niggers, it's also okay for black South Africans, especially if they own soccer clubs, to call themselves kaffirs. Hey, who am I to tell them different, their dads won the war. Of course, those same dads might be a little offended, but I guess that's what kids do.

Still, it's possibly irresponsible for the reporter to call the area in question a "no-blacks" zone, and make it look like the school condones racism, when in fact it's not that at all. Which is not to say that the rugby kids aren't guilty of racist behaviour, but that's not established either way by the story.

    Mum's the word

But then I read further, and it turns out that Aviwe Mhlontlo is 18, and six months pregnant. So actually, the rugby boys were beaten up by a mom, not just a girl. Still shameful stuff; and I wouldn't like to be in the scrum when their next opponents start taunting them. I also wouldn't like to be in history class when Aviwe's water breaks, but that's another story.

The headline of the story was "Girl 'assaulted' white boys," although I see it's been changed now to "Girl takes on rugby players" by some wise editor. Personally, I'd have called it "Foetus in the Front Row", or something like that, but hey, we know racism sells in this country. I'm surprised our sport stories aren't called things like "White guy scores goal for Black Stars", or "Coloured and Woman get medals at Olympics."

Still, assault - that's pretty bad. But then it turns out that Aviwe's assault consisted of "hitting one of them on his chest and grabbing the other's jersey and refusing to let go." Oh my god! Not letting go of his jersey! That can only be inspired by the senseless violence of Grand Theft Auto! Ban it! And these people want to hold a World Cup!

At this point, allow me to quote from GK Chesterton, or rather, some quotations website. "Journalism is popular, but it is popular mainly as fiction. Life is one world, and life seen in the newspapers is another."

    Yes and no

Then on MyNews24, there was a letter from one Johann, commending Aviwe on "shoving two white students."

On one level, I applaud Johann for being a gentleman. He writes "Where have you ever heard of gentlemen throwing things at ladies? Where have you heard of gentlemen shoving or pushing ladies, never mind the fact that she was pregnant at the time! Seems to me that today's men are only willing to engage in a fight against defenseless ladies."

On another level, I despair. We don't know the two rugby players' side of the story, except the bit about them being crybabies. We don't know that this incident was inspired by racism. In fact (and by fact I mean I'm making this bit up. I'm a columnist, so I'm allowed to), the only evidence of racism seems to be on the part of Aviwe Mhlontlo, the one referring to a "no-kaffir" zone.

If you read the original story on Beeld there's more detail, which does seem to point towards a racist incident, at least if you believe Aviwe's mother. But still, what could have been an uplifting and jolly tale of a girl smacking a couple of rugby players becomes yet another turgid black and white issue.

I do like the rugby apartheid-zone bit though. Why on earth should a rugby team get a special bit of grass to call their own? Are hockey or soccer players the new blacks? And at least we now know that rugby players are the new girls.

      Strange times...

...strange times indeed, when we see our children revive and blow new life into racism, when all we want to do is try and work out our differences and move on... But I get you... - Francois Roux

    13/08/2008 09:02
Chris, brilliant article.Yes there r still traces of racism in our younger society today(I've experienced this twice in one night recently). And one would think that in this day and age, that these occurences are a thing of the past. Our country is very sensitive to these issues, only because we do not want to make the same mistakes again.BUT making every incident where multiple races are involved a racist issue is not the way to go. - Tarynn

      girls 1 vs boys 0
    13/08/2008 09:10
wow when I read this I could just imagine the journalist licences that was being played. I had visions of this pregnant female giving these 2 burly rugby players a tight slap. Actually fell off my chair laughing. But then reality stepped in, when I thought about the fact that this girl is pregnant, and the mere fact that she had to resort to that type of behaviour. Nice school. Remind me to exclude them from my choice of schools for my daughter. - BLANKET

      Rugby players
    13/08/2008 09:13
Whatever comes out of this story, one thing will always remain, is the fact those boys are in for a rough time against other rugby players. I would have kept quiet if some girl beat me up. Call it male pride but I do have an ego to protect. - Hansie

      Rugby
    13/08/2008 09:16
Rugby has always been the favoured sport in schools. When I was still in school there was a memorable incident where the Science department?s budget was drastically cut and used for the year?s rugby tour. The rugby players also got away with everything. - HJH

      last man standing
    13/08/2008 09:21
What happened is less a story about racism and more one of moral decay in our society. They were kids, yes, but when did it become okay for boys/men no matter what age, to treat a female that way? I cringe to think what men these boys will grow up to be. I pity the women destined to go through life with them. And I'm forever grateful that I've been blessed with what may very well be, the Last (gentle)Man Standing... - Monique

      A Consistent Failure...A Consistent Tradegy....
    13/08/2008 09:23
You see Chris, you will never understand and I do not want to pull out some overused quotes to make the point becos I dont have to. What you also fail to understand, is the fact that a student let alone a female was assaulted. Now before you accuse me of feeling overly sensitive maybe I should say, the hurt and pain is still there. It still hurts...and yes we will call a spade a spade even though you now portay us as a "overvictimised" lot. Should I be surprised? - Cape Town Kid

Special "patches" in schools are nothing new
    13/08/2008 09:25
All the schools in the city I grew up in had no-go areas for certain people. You would have a first rugby team room, a prefect's corner, we had a little grass island that was off-limits to everyone except the matrics, our little heroine knew about this little patch of earth and it's exclusivity, yet she still wandered onto it. If she wanted to walk there so badly, she should have tried out for the u/15 rugby team. but kudos to her for smacking a couple of pigs. - JP Strauss

      Girls, girls, ...
    13/08/2008 09:28
For shame. In my school days, no guy would admit to being 'assaulted' by a female. In primary school everyone from the first rugby team to the debating circle had their own 'spot' to sit during break. Crossing such a 'no-go' zone would get you pelted with anything from water bombs to pieces of dead frog (the latter courtesy of the science club). But this had mostly been outgrown by high school. Childish? Yes. Racist? Probably not. BTW, love your headline, Chris - Gwyn

How on earth did this make the news anyway?
    13/08/2008 09:33
Really! Are we so bored in this country that this is actually newsworthy? If every incident made the news when I attended school, we would have been on the front page 24/7. Only difference at that time wasd that it was NAT parents childred vs SAP parents children and English vs Afrikaans, so I guess it was white on white violence then and not newsworthy enough? And we did not know whether anybody was pregnant - those were well guarded secrets. - TB

      Bullies.
    13/08/2008 09:35
Bullying in schools is a massive problem. I attended the same highschool as Mark Scott-Crossley, who was a bully ? he went on to achieve further infamy in a high profile murder case, & currently is serving out his sentence. The Waterkloof 4, have been referred to as bullies by their peers, they too starred in their own court drama, & are currently serving their sentences. After my initial anger over the mentioned article, I had a good think about it, & have come to the conclusion that the same old bullies (different faces, same psychopathic nature) at school have just got a new reason to pick on other students. The parents & the schools are at fault, for not giving the problem the attention it deserves. Stop making excuses, they are not just ?being teenagers? or ?being a bit rough? they are bullies. We should deal with them before the law has to. - Sarah

      @Cris
    13/08/2008 09:41
It will be interresting to get the boys side of the story. Could it be that the pregnant girl over reacted to some remarks, and started pushing the boys around, wherupon the boys did not retaliate because if they did, they would have been accused of assaulting women/blacks etc. etc. creating the very racist remarks of some of the respondents. Navs, yes, racism is rife in South Africa. But the majority of rasism is from blacks directed to the white population. Only its called affirmative action - Wondering

      Selective violence
    13/08/2008 09:44
The girl (adult enough to be pregnant) was violent as well. She reacted with violence. Violence begets violence. She should have walked away. And being a "girl" is no excuse anyway - boys and girls are equal remember. Violence is violence, irrespective of race or gender. - Paul

Shame on the news team for this lame story!
    13/08/2008 09:47
We had a quad just for matrics.. If anyone was caught trying to cross it he was placed in the fountain and made to sing hymns. We caught at least one a week trying to take a shortcut! Someone hand Cape Town Kid a violin... - Yam

Just peturbed that most of my comments were not published.
    13/08/2008 09:49
As in these referred to comments, I stated that there are always more sides to a story. Chris, You seem to be somewhat biased. We are standing on the side-line & dont know all the facts. I am against racism & bulies, but reading between the lines, it seems there was some deliberate intentions of intimidation / incitement / ... Regardless, guilty party(ies) deserves the punisment, whoever that may be. Be fair & un-biased. - Matrix

      Different view
    13/08/2008 09:51
I see the rugby players differently. As we don't know if they did throw anything at this girl, then for her to attack them and for them to do nothing is the right thing for a gentleman to do. What would you rather have them do? Fight her off? Push her to the ground? Get real. They aren't sissys, if they didn't strike back at what may have been an unprovoked attack, then they are gentlemen. If you want to make assumptions about missing parts of the story, then at least be even handed. - Alan

      people are rude, period
    13/08/2008 09:52
great article for our touchy society. While I dont think anybody can deny that racism is still very alive. It seems that we dont need a reason to disrespect each other. Many people of the same race are very rude to each other all the time, what do we call that? - dan

@navs, Agree with comment, i.e. "racist needs to be tauhgt a lesson".
    13/08/2008 09:53
And what if the pregnant female is the guilty party? Will you sing the same tune? You seem very one sided reflecting only racism in white society. So you are saying that there isnt racism in non-white society???? - Matrix

      hahahahah
    13/08/2008 09:53
...maybe the heading should've read " foetus in the firing line" - I just can't get over the fact that she took on tow rugby players - in her 6th month of pregnancy! I mean, how agile can she possibly be? She had no way of knowing they were such cissies before she hit one - what if they had given her a real beating? I just feel sorry for the baby - VG

      good article
    13/08/2008 09:54
Haha, yeah i also found it hilarious that 2 boys got assualted by one pregnant lady... and to NAVS, dont start so early with the racist crap please. Need i remind you of the american girl, farm murders, schalk burgers sister etc etc etc. - Mart

      Racism One Way Only
    13/08/2008 09:54
It is now all but illegal in South Africa to report the race of either victim or the perpetrator of a crime (unless the perpetrator is white and the victim black)Yet when the victims are white, there is hardly a peep in the South African press and silence from the international media.(And they accuse us of hate?!! Don't such people nauseate themselves with their hypocrisy?!) - Aunti

      Racism exists

      Another bit of fiction...
    13/08/2008 09:58
How do you know that they belonged in a scrum? They may have been the smallest guy in the team - the scrum half and a skinny little fly half, and if you know anything about rugbty you'll know that fly halves avoid contact if they can. - JD

Yay, at last somebody who actually read the article before commenting.
    13/08/2008 10:18
I'm on the boys side!! No, all you racists bigots, not because they are white but because they did not hit back. I have 2 boys and they are taught from grade 1 not to hit girls, however the girls are not taught not to hit boys. The little girls taunt, torment, kick and scratch the boys from young and the boys have to "take it like a man". I bet this Aviwe was being arrogant and disrespectful and taunting these boys, physically attacked them and then pulled the race card and cried foul. If a girl hits a boy she deserves to be hit back. Men should not hit woman, but the same applies to woman hitting men and believe me they do. A woman thinks nothing of slapping a man across the face and if he even lifts his hand there are horrified gasps. Why should he have to put up with such disrespect and then give respect in return. That is just double standards!! - Karen

      Brilliant!
    13/08/2008 10:20
Congrats on a great article! You put so many people's thoughts into words! As for the comment made by "@ Chris - 09:14"...it's not only whites that deny racism! You're waffling on about racism, but you make a racist remark like that! If a white person had referred to members of a different ethnicity as "you people" like you did, they would have had a lawsuit slapped on them in 2 seconds. Oh, and what is the connection between teaching racists a lesson and crime hotspots? - EB

@Cape Town Kid and the rest
    13/08/2008 10:22
Oh for heaven's sake. Read the article again. Chris clearly states that not all sides are known to him. And again, it was the black kids giving the area that name. Sheesh. Racism is alive - no-one denies it. However. The more you look for racism, the more you will see it....cos you are looking for that proof only. Try for one day to look at the world as if everybody accepts you as you are.....you will find proof of that too. - Kien

      Erm Karen?
    13/08/2008 10:27
Read the article again.. Apparently they klapped her with a stone first, and shoved her so she fell on a pole and hurt herself. That's hardly not hitting a girl is it? - May

      Preggers
    13/08/2008 10:27
It may be a little off the point, but what the hell is a pregnant girl doing at school? Doesn't that condone under-age sex? Boot them out, so that they can study at home, or create a completely separate school for preggers chicks. Sies man. Seems quite common these days. You don't wanna fight with her, she may be HIV-positive, then you get sick too - cause blood may get spilled... Tut tut. - Marcd

      Racism white black purple pink
    13/08/2008 10:30
Brilliant article it's good that someone reinterpreted and cleared up the facts, Just in terms of Navs comment, its hysterical how you/he/she instantly believed it to be a racist attack or racially provoked attack, and it seems your belief in the term "racist" means white on black and not the other way around as well is hilarious. Common courtesy and respect seems non existent in some circles and if addressed on the spot its labelled with the racist tag. Shame on the ignorant - Growlinc

      Pregnant
    13/08/2008 10:31
To hell with the story about two boys getting klapped. What is a pregnant girl doing at school? Maybe she took a shortcut, cause she needed a pee. lol. - Camel Man

      Karen
    13/08/2008 10:31
I am on your side,I think these boys should be coomended for NOT HITTING BACK,but like you say here and in your post yesterday, all every one cares about is that she is black and they are white, whe don't know the whole story, because like always it was only reported from one side,I was raised to NEVER hit a woman,no matter if she hit you first or not,YOU DO NOT RAISE YOUR HANDS FOR A WOMAN.Men who do that, don't deserve to be called men. - proud to be white

      What a joke
    13/08/2008 10:33
What I want to know is what are the pregnant girls morals like in the first place? She is 18 years old, only in grade 11 and she is pregnant!!!! That alone is shocking, never mind any racist comments or actions that took place. It is sad to see where this country is going. It doesn't matter who did what to start with, the guys did not retaliate and it was a wise move. I would also rather be called a sissy boy than to be labeled a white racists woman basher! - cuzin

      So many assumptions
    13/08/2008 10:34
It amuses me to read the comments. So many assumptions based on so little facts...lol. Why bother finding out all the facts when you can suck an answer out of your thumb? - Odette

      Phew!
    13/08/2008 10:34
So many comments! I can't possibly respond to all of them. But Steyn du Toit - stay away from me, you weirdo! And Cape Town Kid - if I could understand what you're trying to say, I'd respond. Mind you, you can probably say the same thing about me. And the rest of you - I love you all! (Except Steyn - stay away, you weirdo!) - Chris Roper

      @ Karens comment
    13/08/2008 10:57
Karen, I think you should reconsider your statement that if a girl hits a boy she deserves to be hit back! Thats crazy! I am a male and a firm believer that a man should never hit/touch a woman no matter what she does, it is highly unlikely that a woman can seriously injure a man just using her hands and any man that reacts physically against a woman is pathetic! - Justin

      Shame on her
    13/08/2008 10:58
Those two boys must receive a reward for not beating up a pregnant school girl. What is she doing still in school, not learning or try to receive an education. She is a troublemaker and should be locked up and kept away from society - Johan

What a useless article. I was hoping there would be a point so I managed to struggle through the whole mess. Problem is if the white boys responded to the savage attack they would have all the black racists in the school attacking them like a pack of mongrel dogs. - Charles Darwin
