Have mercy! The Irks!! All these youth league 'childrens' must go back to school. A few very big words uttered in the same sentence do not make you smart! Maybe we should all follow Julius to where the blue-light revolutionaries are, are they creating a new theme-park? Sounds like it would be fun! I wonder what he smokes....? - Michelle |

The Plot thickens..... 10/10/2008 13:46
If they were clever enough....then the ANC would have sneakily started this revisit to renaming the springboks....and then turned around when it surfaced and say 'they dont want to see a change to the springbok emblem' (albeit after 'debate with stakeholders and supporters') Could this be a motivation seeking voters confidence....the ANC are the 'good guys'? I wonder if Malema will add his 5 cents and go against Jesse Duarte....then say 'kill the springbok' for zuma! - KS |

Racial Diatribe..... 10/10/2008 14:10
Your anger at black people in particular becomes more and more predictable.I have yet to come across a blasting from you abt youths abusing women at a varsity or youths killing a homeless person or lately a facebook eg.then dis type of thing might be normal 2 u.But our anger towards that which has strong link 2 our mistreatment by yr forefathers seem fickle and a joke.At what point, insted of writing rascist rubbish will you get involved, engage with issues instead of patronising us with your views - Cape Town Kid |

Lets add another bokkie. 10/10/2008 14:13
Springbok emblem is a brown springbok (bokkie A), right boys? So we add a slightly darker springbok (bokkie B) running with bokkie A. So we have 2 differently shaded bokkies running together. Lekker unity. Then it is different, but not. And we can all be happy campers and stop the bitching. - HT |

Quick question here... 10/10/2008 14:16
Can anybody tell my why the Springbok should be perceived as a racist symbol? I've always thought of it as a particularly apt symbol, because the Springbok is (a) nimble, (b) graceful and (c) beautiful to look at. OK, points (b) and (c) may not apply to some of our forwards ;-) but I think you catch my drift. How can an antelope be racist? Or differently put: if the Springbok is a racist emblem, why are the Protea (our national flower) and the Blue Crane (nat. bird) not? - Mark R. |

This ANC really needs to understand how pathetic they are about these name changes. I don't care if they want to rename the whole frigging country. The problem is that they are so stupid, they don't have the imagination to be able to come up with enough names. - malcolmx |

The IRKs and their cronies just show that their memory is as short as their hair. The Protea's was the Coloured rugby team from the Cape that play with the black Leopards team in the white competition during the 80's. They must crawl back into their holes and never come back. - Topgun |

KEEP POLITICS & SPORT SEPERATE! Let politicains worry about politics, and let people who have a love for sport manage the game!

Well done. I can imagine that my post is going to be followed by a 500 "You are a racist!" messages. Only the truth will set SA free. There are racist BOK supporters. 97% are not. Let the real SA show the 3% the way. Not the other way around! - Nell |

Springbuck are as African as it gets 10/10/2008 14:34
What is wrong with the Springbuck emblem ? The gazelle is endemic to Africa and South Africa ! Or is the problem that almost everyone refers to it as the "bokke" in that ignorant apartheids babble that is only spoken in Africa? Good grief! Why don't they stop attacking soft targets like the names of world cup winning sport teams and try to get Bafana-bafana ("The boys, the boys" ????) to maybe score a goal or two and after they start winning world cups try and change their name as well! - vlakkie |
|
 |
| |
re: Springboks 10/10/2008 14:35
Hi
I think that replacing the emblem would be a good thing, cause it will save the past history of the springboks being world champs x2.
If the springboks become the proteas or whatever and turn out to be useless, (which will happen as south africa falls further and further behind the rest of the developed world and there will be less and less money for rugby as SA citizens become poorer) then we can always look back to the past when we were "Proud Springboks and world champions." - JuicyLucy |

duh 10/10/2008 14:40
I'm not responding to your comments regarding the actual topic, but rather your first three paragraphs. Suppose you're a tourist in a tourist city (i.e. Durban) with road maps or directions with old street names. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to see the old name of the street you are looking for, if indeed the name has changed and you, as tourist, has no idea? So I can't really comment on the rest of your column because I stopped reading after that. - jiggaman |

English are Roses. The British are the Lions. There is a difference between "England" and "Britain", Avril, you Irk!
Seriously, though, what did little Castro mean? Did he mean to say "Lekota and his ilk", or maybe he got the word "Irk" from the word "irksome"?

ANC is too incompetent to make a decision 10/10/2008 14:58
Of course I love the springbok emblem and I don't want it to go. But all I ask is for a decision, ONCE AND FOR ALL, to be made. I am sick of these constant empty threats. If the ANC wants to get rid of the Bok, then they must please JUST DO IT! Don't be there, wearing the jersey, when the Boks win the World Cup and then talk about how much you hate the Bok before every election! As usual, the ANC wants to have their cake, their melk tert, their chocolate AND they want to stuff their faces all day! - Puhleez |

Emblem 10/10/2008 15:00
I have to say that I think the name Protea is a stupid name for any sporting team as is Bafana Bafana.Huge hulking sportsmen being represented by a flower just seems idiotic and Bafana can be changed to Buffoon by opposing teams. Why not make the Zebra the emblem? Its a fighting animal and stylish and represents all the colours of our nation in its coat, black brown and white. Wont get confused with Oz colours either. - GailC |

The Springboks have done more for national unity than those bunch of bumbling idiots Bafana Bafana...yes yes 1996 Afcon - but we're starting to clutch at straws as its also the only thing they've ever done.Change the Springbok and you'll see a shit-storm like never before - and all you Pan-Africanists - sport is about sport. We all live in a equal, democratic society now (although it might not always seem so) but the ANC has created the country we live in today, so STOP BITCHIN! - Over-and-out |

Ever heard of divide and conquer? We are being kept busy with the emblem, yet again, while the rest of the country falls apart...but we will all be soooo glad the emblem remains, that all will be forgiven! Hello ANC booboos, it aint working - we know the country is in shambles, well except for SARS - but we need something even as small as an emblem to stand up for and fight - no not kill... - MJS |

Chris, thanks for a great way to close of the week - it's been tiring listening to our racist politicians squandering away our children's future (black and white). Keep up the good work Chris. - Etienne |

Boks to become Irks 10/10/2008 15:13
You've cheered me up on an otherwise dismal Friday. As a native Scot and someone who's heading back there for a six month Sabbatical (nah, of course I'm not selling up and abandoning SA for ever), I'm going to find Scottish politics excrutiatingly boring.I might have found Scottish rugby boring too if it still existed! Reckon the thistle boys would give there eye teeth to have access to a tenth of the rugby talent we're lucky enough to see taking to the fields every weekend. - Norma Kelly |

Just curious Chris 10/10/2008 15:15
Why did you want the Bok removed in 1994 prior to being converted by Madiba? It has been a symbol of many things to many different people, but first and foremost it was merely a sporting emblem based on our national animal, not a Swastika. It was the Nats who hijacked it first as the ANC are doing now. - The Truth |

The right to change the name? 10/10/2008 15:25
Well done Chris - the Irks are attention seeking buffoons with not a positive idea about anything.
Here is a question - what moral right has any government or political party got to interfere in a sport which was established ages ago without the dubious benefit of government intervention?
In fact, what legal right exists? I can understand that companies formed to regulate sport must obey the normal law of the land, but what section of the Constitution allows for such gross interference? FC - FC |

Those promoting the change of the emblem really would love to see each and every white person leave SA... my reasoning behind this is that they won't stop until each and every little thing that links up to the past is gone. But I am unsure why you letting yourself get so exited abou the whole thing. In a few years 80% of the English Cricket team will be South Africans, and about 70% of the English Rugby team.
And their loved ones will be safe over in the UK, and they will be able to pronounce all he street names, get decent medical care, education, jobs, police servies, be safe on the roads and have a stable government, a decent currency, etc, etc, eetc . . .

Incredible. I get about 50% less hate mail and insults on a Friday than on my usual Wednesday column day? Are you people all drunk or something? Or is it that when weekends approach, South Africans mellow out and take life far less seriously? Either way, I might be tempted to stick to a Friday from now on! - Chris Roper |

Name to beat the boks 10/10/2008 16:16
Surely we want a new name that will truly signify the fact that they are no longer Springboks. The rugby team can therefore be called the Shamboks! No cultural baggage there surely? And they can still whip anyone's backside! - Alan |

Bafana Protea 10/10/2008 16:28
The reasoning apparently behind the change is that all sport teams must bear the Protea emblem. Will Bafana Bafana also now be changed to Protea Protea?

To Cape Town Kid 10/10/2008 16:38
I can't talk for Chris, but from my point of view, I'll stop patronising people like you at around the time you learn to be grateful for all the advantages of colonisation. 360 years ago Southern Africa did not know about the wheel, mathematics, sea faring, science, money, etc etc. Now, less than 4 centuries later, we have uplifted (some of) you to the same level as the civilised parts of the world. - KoosS |

Springboks 10/10/2008 16:39
Punish the Springboks for the failure in Peking and Bafana not making it into the African Cup. Miskruier as an national emblem will be great.
The Lions are selected from English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish players where the Rose is strictly English. They have there old flag, the St Geoerge Cross (Red cross) Unlike in SA they love their old flag. Don't no what the Irsh thinks about it though. - Willie |

Irk 10/10/2008 16:53
The term irk has been around for at least 20 years and refers to a little man who resides in your armpit. He makes his presence known when you reach for the sugar at the breakfast table, by crapping in your corn flakes. - frank |

If the Springbok emblem reminds ppl of apartheid.... 10/10/2008 17:34
....then why not tear everything else in this country that was around during apartheid?? Hell, and don't stop there...go for the REALLY big stuff, like Table Mountain. That's gotta be a BIG reminder. - Joe Doorn |

Sport in general 10/10/2008 17:51
The soccer insults made me cringe! I passed a Parow primary school at 16:45 where the kids were enjoying an impromtu game of soccer on the rugby field! By the way, I'm a rugby fan ... - Navarac |

Cricket 10/10/2008 18:30
Now hold on here. There is already a cricket team called the Proteas. Now we'll end up confusing the cape town kid totally. He'll be off to bitch about some rugby game/players and end up watching or talking about a cricket game. Imagine how confusing that is going to be. So, it's back to the drawing board, methinks. What a good way to start the weekend. Thankyou Chris. - Bemused |

Durban 10/10/2008 21:39
I live in Durban and think you've let the place off lightly. Surf made of sewage, Son of Stalin as City Manager, Edwin Swales Drive to be renamed after some Gulag torturer and drivers who just cant understand how 4-way stop streets work. - New fan of da East Rand |

I dug the dig at Durb's, dude! 11/10/2008 02:29
...but seriously, where are we going with all this? If we call them Proteas, will they be more firmly "rooted" against the evils of apartheid (which is kept alive only by those harping on and on and on (ad nauseum)about it), or will they become like real proteas, something nice to display (look, we are not racist!) to the world? Has the springbok become politically in-correct? - JL |

You owe me a new keyboard, sprayed coffee all over the old one, could at least given a warning that this was going to be so good !
And when I visit the stuck up family in Natal, I'm JUST going to HAVE to ask them where I could get a Mahatma Ghandi :-) - G.Kuhn |
