A hard nut to crack

Colleen Figg

Have you noticed how difficult it is to open things these days?

I've been conducting an ongoing observation of this curious phenomenon for the past year or so and am finding that things are getting increasingly difficult to get at. I'm talking about everyday items such as packets of crisps, fruit juices, pasta, soap powder in buckets, and more.

Only the other day my sister and I battled to open a tub of pesto from Woollies, once you open the lid, there is a thin piece of plastic sealing the tub which is stuck on firmly. We passed it back and forth, each of us having a stab at opening it, but to no avail.

Eventually I wanted to pierce a hole in the danged thing and be done but my sister persisted and eventually got it open. Must have taken all of four minutes in the end.

Every time I cook pasta I heave and sweat and pull at the packet, but it must be sealed down with superglue because what happens in the end is that the packet part gives way down the middle and pasta flies all over the place while the seal on the packet remains virtually intact.

Liqui Fruit has three seals you have to overcome before you can get at the juice; this is overkill! By the time you get to the foil seal at the very bottom, you've run out of energy for the main event; drinking the stuff!

Coming out in the wash

Last week I was trying to open a bucket of washing powder, by pushing down that piece of plastic in the middle, so that I could get at the lid to prise it open. When pushing down, the plastic refused to give until I exerted more pressure, whereupon it gave suddenly and violently, shredding the skin on my index finger and scraping my thumb.

The other result was that my face nearly made contact with the lid at the same time, since I had put nearly all of my considerable weight behind the endeavour.

Imagine me rocking up to work with a black eye and battered hands and people saying, what happened to you? Only to be regaled with the unlikely tale of my being attacked by a recalcitrant bucket of washing powder! Seems to stretch the boundaries of credibility somewhat, no?

Opening bottles of carbonated drinks also requires a team endeavour with much groaning and eye popping as one person hold the bottle and the other tries to get the lid off. Nine times out of ten, a third individual is required to bring relief to the second whose hands by then are rubbed raw with the effort.

Jars of peanut butter and jam require a hammering with knife around the edges in order to have any chance of opening them on one's own and once you have them open the lid is so buckled you battle to re-seal them.

The manufacturers should include angle grinders in the packaging, from now on, methinks!

Send your comments to Colleen.

  Jars of Peanut Butter
23/11/2007 08:15
I find an easier way of opening Peanut Butter jars is to pierce a small hole in the lid and then open (can be done easily with a knife). This empties the vacuum seal making it easy to open. Hammering with knives on the edges is not recommended... - ShRoOm

  Great Article!
23/11/2007 08:30
Great article, but sorry I couldn't read it to the end, busy struggling to open a can of Zam-Buk here! - Sello

  Um...no
23/11/2007 08:33
Wow, what is the point of this?? I never have trouble opening things... - Juz

  This is exactly the reason...
23/11/2007 08:34
...that I dine out every evening. The sommelier can wrestle with the pinotage cork and heaven forbid that they use no name brand peanut butter for the sauce of my favourite chicken dish, then the deserve to strain a tricep. And lets not question that bottle water should be opened before it reaches my starched white tablecloth. Does pasta come in packets these days? who would have thought! I thought it still came with the waiter. - Nick

  Poor Packaging
23/11/2007 08:34
Woolies are by far the worst in this regard. All of their snacks and convenience foods are terribly packaged. The reult is usually a floor full of peanuts or chuckles or a stain on ones shirt from trying to peel away the cover on a convenience meal. This must be one of the areas they are able to sustain margin in tough times, so we had best prepare for worse to come!! - Mike

  @ Sello
23/11/2007 08:39
Too true!! Zambuk and Chinese Balm are IMPOSSIBLE to open!!!! LOL Nick, I think I'll follow your lead from now on... - Colleen

  Toys are the worst
23/11/2007 08:40
Have you ever opended a Barbie doll box,or any other doll for that matter? There is a million little knots and wires you have to untangle and loosen - All this while a very impatient little girl is jumping up and down next to you. It's not easy. - LB

  Been there
23/11/2007 08:43
Ever tried to open those damn after dinner mints? I was very nearly sued for medical costs the other night when the packaging finally gave way and the mint soared across the room hitting another patron on the head whilst my elbow very narrowly missed my daughter sitting next to me! - Supporter

No, things are not getting harder to open
23/11/2007 09:04
you're just getting older! - C

  Zambuk
23/11/2007 09:12
It's impossible to open the new Zambuk so now I use the old lid to close the new one. The user friendly beer (read) twist cap are sometimes hard to open as if you're trying to twist a 750ml quart bottle. I feel you Colleen. LOL - Fresh

It's simple: just ask your kids to open things for you! They are the only ones that can get past the "childproof" cap on the aspirin. - CooP

  also been there...
23/11/2007 09:26
but it happens that you cannot open some that you yourself had closed! - boyzie

  Rubber Gloves
23/11/2007 09:41
Cut the sleeves of an old pair. Nothing grips like that in stead of a wet cloth. You'll be amazed. Wished my purse could be so hard to open... - Martin

  blisters, stains and vacuum cleaners
23/11/2007 09:45
Advice: wrap an elastic band around the lid of the jar or bottle you're trying to open, it gives you a bit of traction. as for the rest I feel your pain. Add sweets packets to the list, which are actually easier to open from the bottom than from the top due to that funny hole they pierce in the top to hang it from. And don't get me started on pasta packets... - Petra

  So it's not just me?!
23/11/2007 09:47
And here was me booked in for a carpal tunnel op 'cos I thought I was losing strength in my right hand. I haven't had jam on my toast in months. The Roses Lime marmalade is acquiring a vintage. And as for those screws that hold the model cars in the box.... Well, nuff said. - Ray

  AT last
23/11/2007 10:01
someone else has also noticed something that has frustrated me for ages. Imagine how the old and infirm must struggle! - Cat

  It's all relative
23/11/2007 10:04
Maybe you're getting progressively weaker in your old age. Sounds like you're in a bit of a Figg Jam. hehe. - Maybe?

  And......
23/11/2007 10:06
Some 2-ply very expensive toilet rolls have so much glue stuck on it, you lose about 20 pieces before you get to one you can use. Plastic Vitamin Holders... a nightmare. U'r buying a new pair of scissors because the old ones don't work any more, but how to get to it... the new one. I have very bad arthritis...if my husband should go before me, I'll die of hunger. He has to open everything. Lovely article.... very entertaining. - Alicia

The hardest thing to open is....
23/11/2007 10:09
...a platinum credit card account at any bank. I mean, really, why does life have to be so hard? - Trevor Gantry

  Opening Jars & Bottles
23/11/2007 10:25
Jars: Easiest method is to pour hot water into a bowl and place the jar upside down in the water for about 10 seconds. Thereafter remove jar from the water and it shall easily open. Bottle with twist on caps where you need to press the cap whilst opening it: Place bottle on a counter & forcibly press cap with your palm whilst twisting the cap - it shall easily open. - DKJ

  jar
23/11/2007 10:30
okay people, opening jars by poking a hole with a knife into the lid is not the smartest way to go, the best way is to hold the jar upside down and immerse the lid into some hot water which will break the vaccum seal and makes it easy to open. - kitchenboy

  childproof-more like humanproof
23/11/2007 10:37
Trying to open a childproof tub of over the counter painkillers, followed the instructions to the letter. Nearly broke a nail I don,t have, hee hee maybe should have given it to the kids .What seemed like an eternity later, it did open , pills flying everywhere. The washing powder, I use a rounded hair brush handle to literally stab at the rounded perforation on the box- works well!!Jars and bottles, that is where my husband and sons become useful. Taken up weight training at gym , we'll see. - debbie

  Safety Concerns
23/11/2007 10:37
Unfortunately in our current world where many people would steal anything they could easily open in stores, or some disturbed person could decide to poison his least favorite fruit juice in the shop, those impossible to open triple sealed packages are a necessity. it's the only way to ensure the security of the items on the shelf and more importantly the safety of us as consumers. - Paul

  Thank heavens......
23/11/2007 11:13
Thank heavens it's not just me!!!! At last somebody feels the same way I do. And another thing, have you noticed how the quality of black refuse bags have deteriorated? Nowadays you can BLOW a hole in the damn things!!! - cedb00

  What are you talking about?

  Me too
23/11/2007 11:39
The Eskort pork sausage packaging has one corner optimistically labelled "Peel Here". Haven't managed it yet! Always end up using a blade to slit the package open. - Mike
