Rich vs Poor 07/03/2008 09:00
Are you saying that all rich parents are loving and caring while all poor parents are indifferent drunkards? I think you'll find that both classes contain a mixture of all types of parents. - Clare |
|
 |

No Clare 07/03/2008 09:15
I am not saying that at all. I am describing poor people I've met and rich people I've met. I do not generalise. - Colleen |

Either way - you need a license to procreate! 07/03/2008 09:51
Colleen, these images made my blood run cold.. As far as I'm concerned everyone should have to apply for a license to have kids. You should have to provide proof that you can feed, clothe and educate the child and show in some way that you have the emotional capacity to love and cherish such a precious gift. I'd be happy to spend the money we'd save on harbouring killers in prisons if the death penalty came back on paying certain unsuitable people a fee NOT to breed. - May |

Touchy 07/03/2008 09:59
Clare, you seem way to touchy regarding the story Colleen explained...are you guilty?
She is just giving a general point of view.
Excellent story, I am horrified by the children I generally see in the "kiddies area" where they leave their kids while they gamble the night and early mornings away, let alone just putting them in the car ALONE!!! - Andrea |

You think South Hills is bad... 07/03/2008 10:25
... try Geduld in Springs! I gave a lift to one of the ladies working with me not so long ago, and accepted an invitation for coffee. Whilst standing on the patio having a ciggarette with my cuppa joe a young girl walked past and gave me a "Hello sexy"... which would boost the ego of any 30 year old, problem is she was pushing a stroller with a screaming toddler and had another bun in the oven... and she must have been all but fifteen? Makes me appreciate the upbrining that I had. - Sevendust |

It's totally the right thing to do 07/03/2008 10:35
I totally agree with Bored and May, why regulate everything up to and including ownership of televisions, but the CREATION and care of NEW HUMAN BEINGS is left up to people who, most of the time are wholly unequipped for the job. that's why the whole planet's in such a mess. - Will |

Shamefull 07/03/2008 10:38
This is one of my pet gripes! How can you leave a kid alone in a car! Then we arent even mentioning the fact that some kids are still going into smoking areas or standing on the front seat of a car! Parents should start taking responsibility for their kids and treat them as such! And stop blaming your parents! Cos all we hear is: "i never want to be like my parents", so what now you want to over-compensate just cos yr dad never gave you a hug? - Dewald |

It is all about natural selection. I know that the individual members of the human race are all self important. I think the idea is that soon there will be so many of us, we will implode and become the next source of hydrocarbons for the next master species of this planet.
what I find sad is that we are actually more civilised and humane than ever before in the history of the human race.

More education is needed! 07/03/2008 10:45
Leaving a child in a car is not the end of the world. My mother did it to me and I grew up to be a functional adult. It is important to realise that comfort for a child or animal in your care is needed. Metro Police should do outreach programs and teach consumers things like the fact that a closed vehicle in the sun can reach temperatures of over 50 degrees C. People who did not grow up with personal transport now own vehicles and the indirect dangers of vehicles are unknown to them. - Supergirl |

Kids these days 07/03/2008 10:49
I live in an apartment block and the one thing I find the most annoying about the young people that live there are that they feel its there right to have huge parties and disturb people every weekend until the early hours of the morning. Last week it was until 4 am and they had such attitude when I asked them to please switch it off. What happened to manners and thinking of others???? - Sandy |

How you find someone on the robots with a cardboard written" I have 5 kids, 2 dogs and 2 cats and still going strong" while is looking for a donation.where the hell are the kids?,what are they up to?Who allows you to procreate while knowing the poverty you are drowning in? sometimes I blame the ladies for allowing this to get out of control. The kids you make deserve a great future, not to be abandoned and left to fight for another day on their own. Some dont know what rensposibility is all about. - Skizofile |

Licence to have kids 07/03/2008 10:56
I do not know what the right thing to do is, but some countries like China really went the total wrong way, causing more pain and suffering to children than humanly imaginable. I also think some people should not have kids and can not understand how a person can do these things to any child, let alone their own. My kids are, unfortunately, the same as the poor little rich kids mentioned in the article, and we are not rich, just middle class. - Ronel |

So unfair! 07/03/2008 10:57
This is such a sad story. We are just about to start IVF for a long-awaited much-wanted and loved child of our own. It really makes me feel so hard done by when i read things like this - of people who have the most precious gift in the world, a child of their own, and mistreat and take it for granted. If only they stood in my shoes for one day and realised what a truely miraculous gift they actually have. Claire - Claire |

Lights out 07/03/2008 11:00
Whilst working in the casino industry, I once came across a mentally and physically handicapped teenage boy in a wheel chair at 4 in the morning. He had been left outside the Casino entrance since 9pm without food or water, and had urinated in his wheel chair. Because of his handicap, he could not communicate his dilema to anyone. I was then critisised by Management for wanting to punch the parents LIGHTS OUT!!! - Bad Brad |

Kids standing on car seats while mom or dad are driving. That grates me to no end. Also kids sitting on mommy's lap in the front passenger seat when MOMMY has a seat belt on. Parents can be so ignoramous it makes my blood boil. If something ever happened to those kids it would be a death sentence to the parents because they would never forgive themselves. Funny how it would take an accident to realise that!! - SamG |

Uncaring parents? 07/03/2008 11:18
And just how caring are parents who drive with their kids standing up on the front or back seat of the car? In an accident an unbuckled child will be flung forward at the speed you are travelling at and probably through the windshield and onto the road. An accident can happen at any time, please, please buckle up your children. There are just no excuses for not buckling up chidren! - enviroikid |

A few months back my folks came across the exact same scenario. 07/03/2008 11:26
Small infant locked in a car in the boiling hot sun (with one window barely left open).Upon confronting the irresponsible cow (whose child it was) when she returned to her car (luckily for her prior to her window being smashed open to give the child some much needed oxygen & cool),all my father got was a blank, emotionless stare (with other members of the public looking on like zombies). - The Truth |

@ SamG 07/03/2008 11:48
I am so with you on that one... And mothers holding their babies too. Our babysitter is a physio student and she tells me about the kids she treats who have gone through windshields and survived never to be the same again. I would love to be a traffic officer for this reason alone - fine them a large amount! And the cost of a baby seat could be deducted from the fine! All I can do now is hoot and shout at them hoping to shame them into buckling their kids up. - May |

RE: Smash and Grab 07/03/2008 11:52

Charge them 07/03/2008 11:53
the charge of "child neglect" is a slap on the wrist for such a serious offence. If you put a child's life in mortal danger you should be charged with attempted murder. If the unthinkable happens, charge them with murder. South Africa has one of the highest child mortality rates in the world and most of the deaths are at the hands of adults, be it "accidental" or intentional. Great article Colleen, unfortunately it wont reach the people who need to read it the most! - Ev |

The first paragraph or two is about kids locked in cars. Then you start waffling about rich vs poor ubringings etc. Stick to the topic at hand. Stick to the topic!!! - TruthBeTold |

And I thought I am the only one. 07/03/2008 12:01
Thanks for a great article. You have obviously seen the results of modern day kiving. As parents, we have 4 kids, we did enjoy going out but we never left children in the car, especially when they were young. This should just not happen, allthough it does. The other side is the really sad side. Todays kids have no respect for parents, or for that matter any authority. I think the value of the now banned, corporal punishment (NOT ABUSE!!) has sadly been lost to be replaced by kids abusing parents. - Sm |

Some parents 07/03/2008 12:01

Fern....grow up 07/03/2008 12:02
just because some things seems horrible and been happening for too long doesnt mean we can turn a blind eye. maybe we should all get more active where children are concerned, such as Brad with the handicapped boy. Parents get away because they had sex and an embryo formed, that doesnt make u a parent! Good luck Claire, I wish you and your partner well :-) - Charmaine |

abandoned 07/03/2008 12:02
Another one of those generalising diatribes based on a single published incident. Responses: these people should not have children....! If that is the case, leave the child to die, don't play the Samaritan and put the child back in the care of these unloving parents. The result? The horrible parents don't have a child (what you want in the first place) and they might be punished for their neglect and never do it again. There are parents riding around with children loose in their cars while talking on cell phones. There are parents leaving their children alone at home while going to their neighbours to party. There are parents who do not care, period! No one leaves a child in a car on purpose and if so; it is for a reason and than something unexpected happens. Some people forget their keys, other forget their child in the car. Please think before you judge!!! - Benzo |

DISCIPLINE 07/03/2008 12:15
Discipline begins at home!! The way you raise your children, your children will raise their children. If you love your children they should be sitting on the back seat buckled up, if you have to do shopping leave your children with responsible people or take them with you and be responsible. Thats all the advice I can give.

BAD PARENTS 07/03/2008 12:21
As families w need to go back to basics and start rebuilding family live within our society - parents need to take charge of there households to ensure that children can be guided into the right direction. Nowadays children are being raised by there PS2 Nokia cell iPod and the TV gone are the days when families had dinner sitting at one table and talking about the happenings of the day. Parents need to make it there priority to ensure that they are involved in there childrens live and raise them with good morals. There is no bad child only bad parents. - colin |

Horrified 07/03/2008 12:42
I am a rich kid. I went to a private school. My parents were too busy earning money for them to fuss around me. I had to find my own way home after school. Just because we had money doesnt mean we were spoilt. I had to buy most of my things out of my own money. I am grateful now as not only can my mother still help me financially, I am also stable and disciplined. Although I wish she was around more when I was younger. - Rich Kid |

CHILDREN A BLESSING 07/03/2008 12:43
It sickens me that parents/gaurdians - whoeve, can act so irresponsibly!!! Children are a blessing! There are so many couples out there who would love to have a child! you said "Some people forget their keys, other forget their child in the car. Please think before you judge!!!", are you being serious, comparing leaving a child in a car to accidentally locking your keys in the car? sure some people have a reason, quickly rushing into the store to buy bread and milk while the kids wait in the car, is a reason, but gambling at a casino for 4 - 8 hours while leaving the kids in the car because you couldn't be bothered to care for them is not!. - Paul |

I would NEVER leave my child locked up in a car even to go into the shop for milk and bread. I would NEVER forget my child in the car. A parent is ALWAYS aware of their precious baby cargo. To just 'forget' is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard!! I agree with Paul, leaving your kid so you can gamble money you don't have, just stupid!! - SMG |

Community Service 07/03/2008 13:29
Personally, I think there should be a law (like in some states in the US) that children must all (poor or rich) be part of a Community Service at least once a year. This will teach our nation to respect each other and respect each other' situation. It will teach rich kids to be grateful of what they have, and this might sound funny, but it will also teach poor kids whose parents actually do care a lot for them, to also be grateful for what THEY have. - Sarel |
