This bizarre world

Colleen Figg

I once read in the paper that a British man, aged 27, decided to bump himself off by going parachuting and cutting the lines connecting him to the 'chute. This was his first jump, and his last.

Well, if he hadn't gone to all that trouble I would definitely have needed to nominate him for the Darwin Awards: pity suicides can't feature. Still, as I said to my husband - who wondered aloud why anyone would go to such elaborate lengths to kill himself - perhaps he wanted to hit the headlines... as well as the ground.

But this chappie's not alone - I went and did some research because I quite enjoy bizarre suicides and found some lovely ones. I always wonder what their last thoughts are as they make the final leap or whatever. Hope for their sake it's not 'Shiiiit!! I've changed my mind!'

Firstly, there's the urban legend of the Most Bizarre Suicide of 1994 - pity it's not true because it's certainly bizarre. A certain Ronald Opus was said to have leaped out of his apartment window (having had enough of life) when on his way down a shotgun went off, killing him instantly. If that's not fate then I don't know what it is!

Then on to a true story - there's a song called Gloomy Sunday, written by a Hungarian bloke called Rezsô Seress in 1933, that's said to be responsible for over 100 suicides since.

It's even been renamed The Hungarian Suicide Song by The New York Times and the man's ex-wife (about whom he wrote the song) took poison and left a note saying simply: 'Gloomy Sunday'.

Two people shot themselves whilst listening to a band playing it and some folks drowned themselves in the Danube River in Germany whilst clutching pieces of paper with the song name written on them. The most ironic of all the suicides, though, was that of the writer himself; who flung himself out of his flat window in 1968, at the age of almost 70.

Sounds too hectic to be heard!!! Steer clear folks, especially if you're having a bit of a downish day....

There was a certain Buddhist monk called Thich Quang Duc, who set himself on fire in 1963 and staggered through the streets in protest of the way the government treated Buddhists.

I'm always fascinated by people who immolate themselves because it must be bloody sore - I mean, you know how you feel when you burn yourself in the oven - imagine that, times 1000!! I think people who go for this method as a means to an end must be pretty damned determined!

The quirky odds

I also am fascinated with those folk who try to bump themselves off and who fail - the quirky odds of this happening more than once seem incalculable. But in January 2005 a Czech man tried to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a chainsaw (totally extreme if you ask me) and landed up not dying when he missed and lodged the blade in his spine.

This was his second attempt at removing himself from these earthly realms - apparently he had previously tried to hang himself from the branch of a tree. The branch proved too frail and snapped, resulting in two broken legs for the poor, despondent bloke.

Then we get the blokes who don't seem to realise that they've attempted suicide at all - like the Oregon man who went to the doctor complaining of a headache. Subsequent investigation proved that he had 12 nails embedded in his skull, from a while back when he fired a nail-gun into his head. I guess Nine Inch Nails isn't one of his favourite bands anymore...

And what about that chap who went and cut his head off with a butcher's band-saw in a grocery shop in South Africa? I mean, what on earth motivates these people?? And surely, if they were to translate that motivation into something positive, they'd all be pretty successful people.

Can you imagine waiting in the queue for your twelve Rondt's steak; idly wondering if, when you get back home, you should wash the curtains or not; when some dude blows in and hacks his head off then and there! Mind boggling, I tell you!

I read in the You magazine a while back about some chap who was on his 12th or 15th suicide attempt - amongst those that had failed were an attempted gassing and the pipe had a leak outside as well as a leap from the window and getting caught on some protruding object by his trousers. Or something. But hang, man! Surely to God if you've tried thrice and failed, you must assume Someone Is Trying To Tell You Something!!

I dunno... you gotta love it! This bizarre world.

11/04/2008 09:11
I dunno who's weirder, you or this article? - AB

  Suicide
11/04/2008 09:17
Nice article however it does send shivers down my spine. The reason that people go through all these nasty exercises is that, they probably fail to find other options in situations they face. This happens mostly if you have never faced a challenging situations before.Gees ! you've been following these people haven't you. Please find out more, i will certainly enjoy reading that, as gloomy as it is. The fact is i don't feel sorry for these scumbags, cowards, failures and losers - Thokozani

  hahaha!!!
11/04/2008 09:17
you must feel like a real failure if you fail at committing suicide ... can't even do that right :-( - lush

  Tasteless
11/04/2008 09:39
Yes, that's what I said. Suicide is not something to joke about, and it's definitely not "lovely". You know nothing about what went through these people's minds when contemplating suicide. I'd rather read Jon Q's column. - Smee

  no laughing matter...
11/04/2008 09:43
I surely dont see suicide as a joke.... I've been there.... I've tried... no matter which way it is attempted....that is the way that the person saw fit or would rather have liked to go... have some feeling pls.. - Sandra

I think it's disgusting the way you make a mockery of death and people. Imagine the emotional state of some of these people when thinking about suicide. you should be ashamed. I imagine that you think that I am just over reacting and don't see the darker side of your humour. - Neil ross

  Gloomy sunday

I'll bet you anything that everyone reading this column are going to go looking for the lyrics of that song! :D - E

  Funny?
11/04/2008 10:01
Reading this with a fair sense of humour, I can see people getting a little upset. After all, SA has a fairly high suicide rate (think matric exams time). We also have a large number of suicidal individuals in cars, some succeed, others fail and kill others instead. - Benzo

  Funny?
11/04/2008 10:05
What a bizarre subject to try and make fun of. Find suicide amusing do you? Maybe next week you could do a piece on the hilarious exploits of people dying of aids. (that was sarcastic in case you missed it). No class. - hein

  ISuicide - laugh
11/04/2008 10:12
Yeah ha ha ha suicide got to have a laugh. I bet the suicide victims would laugh along too if they hadn't been so crushed by depression and were probably crying at the time. Still it's a real hoot. Wow what losers! ha ha ha. - Warren

  Tread carefully
11/04/2008 10:22
No doubt there are many instances where we can all snigger and tut-tut a bit about some more bizarre suicide attempts - I do, too - but there are many families to whom the topic may not be as frivolous. So I do try not be too judgemental or dismissive about those who decides to end their lives. And how many of us have never thought of what it would be like doing it? But personally, I don't think I could ever go to such extremes, no matter how hard the times. - Jaco

11/04/2008 10:56
Thanks for making the topic light. Fairly enjoyed it! - Nyx

  I enjoyed it
11/04/2008 11:03
Thanks Colleen - I enjoyed the column. I often feel depressed, and the best medicine is laughter. There is always a tomorrow, and people who try suicide often forget that. What gets to me is the lack of efficiency in some of these attempts. Surely they could do better! - Jan

  Colleen
11/04/2008 11:05
Although one might find some of those attempts, bizarre...your attempt at making fun of a situation where people lost someone they dearly loved...is dispicable to say the least. This sort of humor is for the privacy of your own home & NOT for a public forum. You are a VERY sick person...shame. - Paul

  ag please
11/04/2008 11:22
those who are so serious as not to see the lighter side of this article, please do us a favour and off urself. Good article, coleen. - Werner

  Not funny
11/04/2008 11:23
I can see how someone without any experience in suicied might find it funny but I had a family member kill themself and it's no laughing matter. You don't know what the circumstances of these peoples lives were and I find it offensive to read it being made fun of. - Melrsa

  HUH?????!

COLEEN, YOU BREAK MY HEART.................... - TAFADZWA

  Suicide
11/04/2008 11:25
Have experienced friends that committed suicide and in all honesty if that's what you want to do, you go right ahead! I don't have sympathy for people who attempt or actually commit suicide..sorry!!! I quite enjoyed the article, some bizarre people out there. And lets remember, this is Colleen's Column, you don't like it, don't read it. Go read Racist Jon Q's colunm rather!!!!!!!!!! - Azraela

Well this Beats the other Column
11/04/2008 11:30
My greatest literary hero committed suicide. I watch Kurt Cobain on the unplugged DVD and have to ask what was so horrible about life that he had to end it. But you know, Sandra and Hein, if you want to be a dumbass and try off yourself, then you become public domain and open to ridicule. Thank you, Colleen; your article beats the one by the idiot defending the editors of the sunday times. - niels

  Lighten up!!!
11/04/2008 11:49
Well I think your article was a refreshing change!!! I have also been there and done that - or should I say TRIED that!!???!! But I still could not help laughing along! Reading this and in retrospect it does all seem like a stupid way out! - T

  Tasteless
11/04/2008 12:04
Colleen really, I understand that we have to make fun of some things in life and not take ourselves too seriously but your article is insensitive! - Not impressed

  lighten up
11/04/2008 12:10
Yes, it's a dreary subject, but take it within the frame it was written. If you are offended, why continue reading the article? - lani

  Gotta love it???
11/04/2008 12:25
Wow - a list of people and their actions on how they tried to commit suicide... you must have allot of time on your hands to research this crap ?Superwomen?!! - Daniel

  Not a laughing matter... but....
11/04/2008 12:42
There is no excuse for taking your own life. I think people that kill themselves are cowards. Nothing can be so bad that can't be resolved. They don't realise the mess they're leaving behind and the family turmoil that goes with it. And yes, I've known families who have been through it. It's not pleasant having all the 'what if's' and 'if only's' playing on their minds all the time. It shouldn't matter the problem, anything can be resolved if people would just open their mouths and talk about it. - SMG

11/04/2008 13:21
Reminds me of the chap we had in the Army who first took some sleeping tablets but worried that it might not work, he dived off the roof of a building onto a concreted parking area. Broke his shoulder, suffered concussion and as a result of the pain, got sick and rid himself of the contents of his stomach, including all the tablets. A case of how not to do it. - Ace

of the Gloomy Sunday song to all the execs of eskom and this govt.Maybe they'll do us all a favour and put us out of their misery! - psycobabble

  Touchy
11/04/2008 14:01
It is a touchy subject...speaking from personal, I was on the point that if I had a weapon I would have ended my life. But looking back, glad I din't end it all. Now I have a beautiful baby girl and thinking back, it was going to be a cowards way out. There is always a solution. You just have to look for it. - Same Boat

  I don't
11/04/2008 14:11
think this is funny. You'll never know what pushes or drives a person to committing suicide. Anyway, could somebody tell me why males do it more than females?..is it a macho thing? - boyzie

  Journalism?
11/04/2008 14:26
Is the writer supposed to be some type of journalist? This "article" sounds like the ramblings of a self-absorbed school girl with a morbid fascination with other people's suffering. Next week, please do a piece on how comical children look that are dieing of hunger. They really look hilarious, with their oversized heads and twig-like arms and legs. Go ahead... start writing. - Francois

  Suicide
11/04/2008 14:36
Cant take it anymore with these high interest rates and food/petrol prices. Seems the only way out is to commit suicide around here! - Sello

  Check your facts
11/04/2008 14:53
Go to Snopes.com before you put finger to keyboard and check your facts before publishing urban legends as truth. The whole Gloomy Sunday piece is pure urban myth. - dd

  Rather amusing...
11/04/2008 15:22
To find another person with a dubious sense of humour - and people call ME twisted. ps you should check out the article on News 24 about indian farmers drinking hair dye. - Sarah

  tasteless
11/04/2008 15:44
I dont know whats more strange... you or the article. The article is incredibly tasteless... no class what so ever. You honestly should be embarrased. - Mo

  humour ...
11/04/2008 16:13
Oh please get a sense of humour some of you are so Uptight!! @ Sandra ... did you also not succeed? - Russ

  If you wanna go, go.
11/04/2008 16:29
Apparently the Catholic Church considers suicide a direct "don't stop and collect R 200" ticket to hell. Suicide is among the most self-centered cowardly acts humans have ever come up with. As with everything else, it is a choice. You can also choose to get help, no matter what the problem. State of mind, emotions, bah! Deal with it like a grown-up. These suicides are rightfully called bizarre! - Dion Oosthuizen
