Colleen Figg

In the beginning, Gates created e-mail. The world went mad with joy at this new toy, we could send around jokes and funnies to all our friends and families and in fact work became much more exciting with the prospect of seeing what was in our inbox (that was entirely unrelated to work) than it had ever been before.

At first it was all about fun and inspiration, humour, comedy and sex jokes. It was about awe inspiring pictures of nature and animals that we might never have got to see or share and about sending around family pictures, keeping in touch and organising events for our eternal amusement.

Gradually a number of people, seemingly in the grip of a creeping terror or state of paranoia discovered nightmares lurking in ordinary everyday objects/matters and started creating and sending around these warning e-mails, so that we soon became aware that even the most innocuous looking plastic bottle could herald an unexpected but torturous death.

This slow death would involve worms consuming you from the inside out and finish with you eventually being asphyxiated to death by a rare kind of strangler fig (only found in a remote Andean location) whose seeds would germinate in the actual molecules of the plastic bottle and would lodge, unbeknown to you, in your throat where they'd wrap their creeping tendrils around your oesophagus. We soon learned to Stay Away from Bottled Water.

We also heard how Coca-Cola is actually a high octane fuel and degreaser combination developed by communist bloc countries for use in the maintenance of their heavy duty engines and nuclear power plants. It's also excellent for dissolving diamonds, bleaching teeth, removing grease and oil stains from overalls and killing cockroaches they say. How we ever got tricked into drinking this god-awful brew we will never know but thanks to those in the know we will, from now on, just say no!

Intelligent

Technology morphed to a new level when e-mails started becoming intelligent. They would know who had sent them and where they were being sent to and if, within nine minutes of your receiving them, you had not forwarded them to fifteen of your aunts and cousins, the forces of darkness would be brought to bear on you and your miserable life in the form of some catastrophic event involving you or your loved ones and several Angels of Death. Big Brother is watching.

Just the other day we got sent pictures of a sea awash with the blood of slaughtered dolphins and urged to petition off to "Disgraceful Denmark" to stop the brutal carnage of these happy chirruping creatures whose only ambition is to frolic about in the sea and save us from sharks. At the same time we received this we received another, this time urging us to conglomerate in as many numbers as we could muster at an island off the coast of Japan where they, too, were carving up dolphins and painting the sea red.

While I was booking my ticket to Japan and Denmark respectively I was urged, with the aid of some really ghastly pictures, to get myself to a place where horse torture is being practised on a wholesale scale and while I was trying to juggle my diary to accommodate this cause I heard about seventeen children who had been stolen and/or were at death's door but who Gates (the man is a marvel) had promised to save if I would just forward the (obviously tracked) e-mail on to 450 people within the next half hour.

While all this was going on, I was offered several getaways and free entries to competitions if I would just part with 20 e-mail addresses. Then I was sent a ribbon to campaign against cancer.

Nowhere does it say quite who we are campaigning against, where the Cancer Headquarters are was never laid out, and who was "In Charge" was equally uncertain.

Trying times, people. Many rivers to cross. E-mails to forward, and digest, by the score. Funnies just about gone. Everything deathly serious now.

This really works trust me. ps. great article and now if anyone can tell us how to stop this so that we can stop living in fear.................... - David

07/11/2008 11:18
Gates created email? Check your facts, Colleen. Email happened without Gates! He just added it to his OS. - Smokey

07/11/2008 11:25
Well written, you were just too kind to those idiots REALLY forwarding idiotic emails to other people and REALLY believe the will get a free cellphone / notebook / 1000US$ / eternal life (must be true 'cause it's on the internet !!!???). And add all their buddies email addresses to the cc: column, just what the "lonely russian girls" / "viagras" / whoever want, so they have free accress to our email addresses. Idiots, wake up !! If it's not about money, it's about information about YOU !!! - buz

Saudi spiders at Somerset-Wes mall crawling up your .... followed by instant death. Obama wants to put through legislation to make abortions legal upto a week AFTER birth. "Night of long knives" is making a come-back. PS: The next fool who sends me t - HVR

  Gates DID NOT invent e-mail...
07/11/2008 11:44
I did actually :) - Ray Tomlinson

  Agreed!!
07/11/2008 12:01
Nice article and very true!! For all the mails ?if you don?t forward this to 100 people in 10 seconds your will burn in hell for eternity? I should have been dead by now. Somehow people still fall for that nonsense is mind-boggling and irritating. - LLH

  How to stop it....
07/11/2008 12:01
Is to stop being ignorant and spreading mis-information (like Gates created email), and not believing everything you read (like Gates created email), and not encouraging the spammers by NOT sending it on to someone. It can stop with you. Such ignorant people in Email Admins nightmare. BTW, Gates did not create anything, he "appropriated" an existing product and marketed it brilliantly...as his own. - gummibear

  @ Smokey

Round of applause for Smokey there, you're so damn smart, thanks for clearing that up for us! - Smoked Out

  Hoax-slayer
07/11/2008 12:10
Hey Colleen, ever heard about hoax-slayer.com? The Denmark dolphins slaughter is actually true...maybe go check their website whenever in doubt, still good article... - Miss

  I can relate!
07/11/2008 12:26
I was nodding my head the whole way through the article! If everyone hates these type of emails (like they always say they do) why do I still get 50 of them in my mailbox every day? Once and for all: EMAILS CAN NOT BE TRACKED!!! I don't care if you are Bill Gates, but the little girl in Nigeria is not going to get the 3c from AOL if you forward the email. follow my lead: right click and delete!! bravo - excellent article! - Amber

  Information Age
07/11/2008 12:47
This is a result of the information age. People will just have to start learning selective attention. You cannot believe everything you read. As for... Angels and God rewarding you within the next 15 minutes of you forwarding the email to 15 people... What a load of Rubbish. Who believes that anyway - Idiots. And for the enter a competition and CC the company - This is the biggest marketing tool around. Once these people have yours and all your friends' details.... They will never leave you alone - Steph

  @Miss
07/11/2008 12:48
Reread hoax slayer it's actually Pilot whales slaughter not dolphins. - Shan

  I open with suspicionn
07/11/2008 12:56
How true.Emailing has become a tool for criminals and fraudsters as well.I also get tired of those inspiring emails that tell you you have to emails 20 people,if not you'll have bad luck.I try to enjoy the email and ignore the last part. Also you get stories that are similar, yet a little different that you wonder if an individual just changed facts to deceive for the sake of inspiring. Those who get them will know."Paranoid is I after reading!!!"The world has changed. So much has changed!! - Nthatuwa

  www.snopes.com
07/11/2008 13:05
I also hate these emails. I even send people the links from snopes.com (brilliant website) to show them the stuff they forward are hoaxes byt they somehow do not register and keep sending this stuff. A new thing that I get a lot of lately are these phishing scams. It's sad to think there are people stupid enough to fall for these scumbags's stories. - schalla

  Spam
07/11/2008 13:22
We all hate it, wish there was a genuine way to get at those doing it. But - check your facts regarding Gates and Email. That is a poor mistake to make, unless you believe only what comes through your email. - MJ

  baaaad!! opening line..
07/11/2008 13:57
for anyone that credits bill gates for inventing email does not deserve to read a following line.. - anonymous coward

  Use it or loose it
07/11/2008 14:16
Excellent article Colleen, I especially enjoyed the part on bottled water. What actually makes me mad about some of these mails are the one's where they use pictures of children with cancer, etc. and then Microsoft or whoever will donate 10c for each address it is forwarded to. How low can some people actually go? A thought - why do the SAPS not use this powerful tool like in searching for missing persons, criminals, and so on? Do they have computers? - Confucious

  Bill Gates
07/11/2008 14:26
Come on people ......so what if Bill Gates did not create e-mail? Funny that everyone knows that it was not him but then they do not name the actual creator or inventor (probably because they do not know who it is). Whether it was Bill Gates or not, for what he achieved we may as well give him credit for it. - Confucious

  @ Smokey
07/11/2008 14:29
Chill out Smokey, this was intended as light hearted fun! Great coloumn by the way - Marnus

  By the way...
07/11/2008 14:34
I checked out hoax-slayer.com (thanx for the tip guys!!) I was on the website for more than an hour! I found it incredibly informative! Not surprised to see the email of plastic in the microwave causing cancer being a hoax, but Xylitol causing harm to dogs are true! totally amazed! check it out! (by the way: who cares who invented email and who didnt? it's still a great article) - Amber

  the Gates thing
07/11/2008 14:38
I don't genuinely believe Gates invented email people!! That was very much tongue in cheek! Irony? - colleen figg

  @ Steph - selective attention
07/11/2008 14:40
This is so true. There are so many depressing emails and articles doing the rounds in the media lately; if one was to pay attention to all of them some of us would end up in hospital. I mean the headline tells you the story already? why read the gory details? I decided long ago, no more filling my brain with disgusting horror stories. Not that I am blinding myself to reality or burying my head in the sand - but what is all the negativity doing for. Give me something positive and up building. - Giant Panzy

  Gates Created E-Mail?
07/11/2008 14:44
How terribly ignorant to write an article on this subject and make such a mistake... - Eduan
