It's all about distractions

David Moseley

Because I have nothing to do all weekend except lie around and think about what I'm going to write next, I have come to the conclusion that life is nothing but a series of distractions designed to keep your mind off the inevitable.

Like the old saying goes, there are only three things guaranteed in life: death, taxes and the absolute certainty that whoever gets put in charge of a South African sporting code is guaranteed to be 99% moron, one percent administrator. Everything you do during the day, at night and on the weekend is simply ensuring that you continue the feel-good delusions you've become accustomed to until your number's up.

Try staying at home for a few days or over the weekend with no books, beer, prostitutes, PlayStation, whatever your distraction of choice, and see how much fun it is. You'll enjoy the silence for a moment, but after two days of counting your toes you'll be crying out for any kind of stimulus.

If we didn't have all these wonderful toys and escapes to keep us grinning gormlessly through the day we'd be hanging nooses in our living rooms instead of designer lampshades.

Which is not to say the distractions are bad things. They're great. We need them because the clear-cut outlook on life is pretty bleak - you're born, you grow, you work, you die. Woo hoo. What a barrel of laughs that is. I'm no student of the mind, but I'm sure that's got something to do with the way the world has expanded in centuries gone by. Humans can't sit still and let life idly pass by.

Create, destroy, conquer, burn

We need to create, destroy, conquer, burn, build and sleep around because we're so determined to not let the inescapable truth get us down - our lives really mean nothing in the greater scheme of things. Great men and women do come and go, this is true, and they leave marvellous items behind for the rest to enjoy. But they're still buried six-feet under.

The average man, the not-so-great people, conquer the working world. We run half-marathons, we sit around the boardroom table discussing the merits of red instead of blue on the cover of a magazine, we gather with our friends and dissect the lives of those that aren't present, others choose to remain off the grid and enjoy a lifetime of travel and non-commitment. Either way, it's the same thing. It's a distraction.

If people are honest, which they never are, they'll tell you they live hopping from one good moment to another. Life can't ever be a constant stream of bliss. But we wish it was. The rich buy speedboats and wakeboards, the middle-management and middling crowd wait giddily for the next company freebie to get them through the day.

It makes the search for a single meaning of life futile. There isn't one. There are many. How you enjoy your distractions of preference will give you the meaning you're looking for. You can find it in selfless devotion to others, you can find it in the good book, in a loving relationship... you can find it on a mountain bike 700m above sea level, you can find it in a collection of shimmering sports cars.

Bottom line is, the distractions are good. It's what makes life worth living. And whether you're creating a seven-metre wide mural depicting the atrocities of the Spanish Civil War or colouring-in using a paint-by-numbers set, as long as your mind is wandering it's all good.

I like this article. Not like some of the cr$#p other writers put forth. - CD boy

  Amen to that.
19/02/2008 13:52
Yup! But you must see the looks I get when I tell people that life is inherently meaningless, so the best thing is just to make sure you enjoy it! But then again, people are immune to common sense anyway... The meaning of life? 42. - Rob

Dave, I wait all week for your writing. The mind is vain, naive and fickle. Just go back and see what your critics say. Great piece. I would love a collection of your works to have a good giggle now and then. Cheers - shaun

19/02/2008 14:09
Like Jenny says...you may be a bit depressed...just make sure you don't replace your "designer lampshades" with a noose.... - RG

don' you know people get burned at the stake for shining a light on such truths as this one? No one wants to know, boet, but well said anyway!!! - CF

"Like the old saying goes, there are only three things guaranteed in life: death, taxes and the absolute certainty that whoever gets put in charge of a South African sporting code is guaranteed to be 99% moron, one percent administrator." -- This is the most accurate summary I've read in a long time... BRAVO!!! - Greg

Prozac anyone?????? - Clarity

  Sure!
19/02/2008 14:24
Yeah, one needs to enjoy life and do all things pleasant. But at the same time, I'd rather live in hell than die and go to hell. Who'd want to be on the "Grill of the day special" menu for all eternity? - Thabo

  Da meaning of life
19/02/2008 14:25
(A) Nicholas Monsarrat's "Life is a four-letter word" - read it; (B) Adam Small's play "Kanna" espouses a deep life philosophy: "My vrind, djy lewe net om te eet en te n***" (C) Find your soulmate, or is that 'soul, mate'? :))) - Tony

  Yes Brother
19/02/2008 14:27
Inherently meaningless... but for a short time we can enjoy life, until our number comes up. After that nothing is certain, we might believe things, but nothing is certain. I'd say try and enjoy every moment! Nice saying I've read somewhere: "Believe those who are seeking the truth, doubt those who says they found it!" - Thinker

  Monty Python's "Meaning of Life"
19/02/2008 14:53
For those who haven't seen it yet, watch it (funny, yet serious at the same time).Let me also say that when one is sitting across from a colleague and friend bravely fighting that bastard, cancer,it puts things pretty much into perpective, that those of us who have only our good health and not many material possesions, have plenty to be extremely grateful for. - The Truth

Attending two funerals in as many weeks...
19/02/2008 15:03
(both of young people taken in their early thirties, one by cancer and the other by murder) also serves as quite a harsh wake up call for one.I know its cliche' by now but we should all live life to the full, & love our family and friends as much as we can, simply because we have no flippin' idea when we will be next on the grim reaper's list (especially in this country). - The Truth

  Meaning of Life...
19/02/2008 15:03
Is definitely not 42. That's the meaning of life, love and everything else... - Critic

  Too true.
19/02/2008 15:05
Agreed, life is a relentless quest for the next good thing. Only problem is that people are always searching for something better or bigger, it's human nature, it's what makes life that little bit more interesting. - Anonymous

  Good article
19/02/2008 15:43
Thank goodness we only live for our 3 score and 10. Imagine living for 500 or 1000 years - now THAT would be depressing!!!! laughter, love and joy all die at the same time as disgust, failure and hate. How's that for prozac material!?! - Graeme

if you do not believe that your life on this planet is in preparation of the life thereafter - turbo superboss

  Wrong
19/02/2008 15:53
You and all the readers that agree are seriously wrong and I have to agree with Jenny: it depends what you are running from (and I know what you're running from). Go back to your roots and do what your parents made you do. All humans are created with an emptiness inside them, and there's only one Thing that can fill that gap, go ask Paris, Britney, Lindsay, etc. No amount of adrenalin of alcohol will fill that gap. Good luck pal, hope you find it, it's so easy! - pietc

  Life
19/02/2008 15:55
Life is what you make of it ... There are plenty of distractions to keep us away from the 'noose' but I guess it depends on how amenable you are to diversity in this life! - TheOne
