Students are harmless

David Moseley

Of course in South Africa it makes perfect sense.

A couple of university students in the Free State degrade their fellow countrymen in the most abhorrent manner, and the police reaction is to raid a bar in Stellenbosch where the punters, if the CCTV footage is anything to go by, were mingling and drinking without too much racial hate going on.

I can only imagine that the police in the area read the poorly conceived and ridiculously executed story in the Weekend Argus last week about all the fun Stellenbosch students were having in the wee hours of the morning - and so decided to clamp down on what's been a pretty conventional part of student life since Caesar went for his first Roman Fine Arts lecture - How to Pave Roads and Take Over the World in One Fearsome Reign - at Roma University in 35 BC.

For those of you who might have missed it, or prefer more cerebral Sunday reading like the classifieds pages in the Mail & Guardian, the Weekend Argus last Sunday ran a half page feature on students at Stellenbosch drinking (shock) and getting drunk (gosh) on the weekend.

There's a lot of shoddy journalism in the world, but that kind of took the cake. The story didn't even regale readers with any of the irresponsible hi-jinks that students really get up to when they're hammered or baked off their faces. Just ask the farmer about the cow my digs borrowed back in 2000. Good times.

Nonchalance

Anyway, that's not really the point. What was particularly impressive about the police raid was the complete nonchalance of some of the students when they burst through the doors, extended cocks blazing all the way. I was watching etv by mistake last night, and the video on the news showed most of the kids regarding the belligerent coppers with a kind of bemused indifference.

One fellow, who was pushed to the floor rather abruptly, collapsed in a heap without spilling a drop of what I can only imagine was a double brandy and Coke. Good work, sir. Your learning at Stellies is obviously going well.

Surely, though, the police have better things to do. Why don't they raid parliament to wake the suckers up? Mind you, they're probably scared of finding too much contraband in one of those dreary sessions. The newspapers are reporting that the police's finest only managed to find two "dagga cigarettes" (spliffs, dude, spliffs) on their big raid out.

And throwing a girl around like a rag-doll, come on SAPS. What is a 19-year-old female varsity student going to do to a cop in full flak gear? Swat him with her sassiness?

Over-worked, under paid

I like the police. Metro cops and traffic cops not so much. But the real police are cool. I especially like it when they shoot rubber bullets. I would join just to do that. Bang. Take that rioter. They're over-worked, under-paid, and in all my years of being a "will this be my last day" South African, I've never had a bad experience with the law.

Why they would raid - what seemed to be a peaceful environment - in such an aggressive manner is bizarre. I've interviewed one of those crazy Special Forces cops before - from a distance, naturally - and their training is all about subduing the masses with instant shows of force. When the bad stuff goes down you want these guys to appear.

Throwing around a couple of boozy kids in Stellenbosch, though, is hardly a surefire PR stunt in reassuring the South African public of the local law's might. As far as I'm concerned, students are the most harmless (Free State aside) people around.

Thank goodness they never raided any of the pubs in Grahamstown (go Rhodes), none of the students would have been standing straight enough for them to knock over.

  Stellies

awesome article! unfortunately the cops will get off scott-free despite smashing up people and spraying the innocent, for what real reason i have no idea, but long may the bosch continue to party! - Ryan van Wyk

  Revenge attack
11/03/2008 13:30
The public has to see this for what it is : a revenge attack by the Government in retaliation for the Free State video. Plain and simple. This was a clear message to White students. - Paul

  Nice read
11/03/2008 13:35
Let's have more articles like this one from David. - Sandy

  What were they thinking?
11/03/2008 13:39
I'm a student.. Not at stellies though, but I heard from a few mates what happened, and read about it on the news. What is wrong with SA? Students are probably the least harmful people around. We're most likely to march for a cause, beggars love us for our empathy and apart from some drunken shenanigans we're pretty law abiding citizens. Well done SAPS. How many serious crimes happened while you confiscated your two joints? We'll be raided whilst we're out and get mugged walking home.. yay - Mark

  Wot A Laf
11/03/2008 13:42
Students have and always will get hammered at local nightspots and yes some will smoke a spliff or even experiment with "E" (Shock, Horror) but to raid a club/hangout in the hope of arresting the users misses the root of the problem. The dealers are the ones to find, but they arent in the clubs, they sit far away and use runners who, if arrested, never squeal because the fear of retribution from the supplier, is a far greater consequence than the fear of the finding of the court! - Gee

  Brute strength
11/03/2008 13:43
Our police are under-paid and over-worked. So thanks is due, for doing work I really don't want to do. But what was the reason behind the raid? (Let's be honest - in Grahamstown, they would have to pick the students up in order to swat them down again...) - RU 2

  The police is your friend
11/03/2008 13:46
My sentiments exactly! Having watched the footage, I conclude that many of the early morning revellers were probably too inebriated to compute what was going on in the first place. As to the ones who organised and carried out this so-called raid: when you?re done playing cops, could you go and fight some real crime, d?you think? Good grief! The mentality is shattering ... with friends like that, who needs enemies! - Diego

  Raid
11/03/2008 13:48
How sad how times have changed.... that the police have to resort to such measures.. have they then forgotten what it was like to be young, surely these clubs can't be that bad... they should be raiding the areas that are more involved with what they were looking for!!!!!!!! - Sign of the times

  Varsity.
11/03/2008 13:48
Sorry to say,but after the Reitz disaster, something like this was bound to happen. Some cops manhandling white students.Wonder when a shebeen raid will take place? Mmmmm - Camel Man

  I must apologise.
11/03/2008 13:50
After I first read the article (without seeing the video), my first reaction was that the students probably got what they deserved and I made statements to that effect. I was a student too and I know how difficult and disrespectfull a group of drunk students can be. Then I saw the video. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. My God, our police have gone mad!! That is unacceptable and I hope the victims sue the pants of those criminals. Easy money if you ask me. - Ami

  Too right
11/03/2008 13:51
Hahaha. Great one David. And yes, at Rhodes the students would already be on the floor (without spilling a drop mind you). Silly use of police time... - RU 4 eva

  well said!
11/03/2008 13:51
Great article! Thanks! - Big R

  Great Article...
11/03/2008 13:54
...insightful, targeted AND funny, that's the way I like your articles to be, it's good to see you back to your best, Mr Moseley, your column makes a nice change from the horrible racial overtones of certain other columnists on this site. Keep up the good work ('Spliffs' indeed - hehehe!!!) - Rodders

  Stellies raid
11/03/2008 13:55
After watching the etv coverage on the news, I have the following to say: I don not give a rats ... about under paid and over worked. Change jobs! This sort of behaviour by our police is abhorrent! They should be identified, charged, shamed and sacked! Nothing less! My anger towards these brutes only makes me wish that someone floored them! They should be reduced to pencil pushers - mind you, they probably cant write. Plonkers! - Paul Mazurkiewicz

  Ridiculous
11/03/2008 13:57
Haven't laughed this hard in ages! What i do find funny is that raids on student hangouts are, if not an everyday occurrence, at least not an anomaly in Pretoria. I've always wondered if they expect to find home made nuclear weapons inside our shoes.. - Salom?i>

  GEE
11/03/2008 13:58
Unfortunately, dealers are staying in surburbs and are NIGERIANS i.e. your "buddies". The fact is most junkies are white and indians and don't mention coloureds. Those students know the dealers and won't rat on them, why? cuz the black government is in power. - Tomas

  MR POLICE MAN
11/03/2008 13:59
Mr. Moseley I agree that the SAPS went overboard just a tad little bit. As a journo where were MR Moseley in the 80s when my sister and her classmates were brutally removed from there classrooms in the townships and beaten like dogs by the police. Now he has the moral upstanding to speak out on police brutality - I just whish you had the GUTS to do the same 25 years ago but I guess the respect and dignity of a white person is more valuable that that of my sister and her class mates as her suffering were unaccounted for in the MEDIA. And what about the Township Pubs that are raided in the same manner do you have an opinion on that and will you take time to write an article on that. - colin

  hee hee
11/03/2008 14:00
"One fellow, who was pushed to the floor rather abruptly, collapsed in a heap without spilling a drop of what I can only imagine was a double brandy and Coke. Good work, sir. Your learning at Stellies is obviously going well." ROTFLMAO - what a wonderful sentence. Thanks for a much needed laugh. On a more serious note - absolutely agree that unnecessary force was used in the situation. - Liesl

  Rhodes
11/03/2008 14:01
Great article but what do you mean that they never raided the pubs in Grahamstown - in 2000 the police had "Operation Rhodent"...where they arrested tons of students and then the police proceeded to deny that the operation was aimed at the student population of Grahamstown! - Nats

  but in the meanwhile ...
11/03/2008 14:02
A Dutch tourist was raped twice in her room at the Lord Charles almost around the corner from Stellies. Nice going men in blue ... I bet she is going to shut up and just let it go. But hey they were tired after the early morning student raid, so I suppose they needed the rest. - Martin

  It wasn't too dark!
11/03/2008 14:08
Ha ha, They had vehicles, the club was reasonably well lit! Time to attack!! These students are the pitts!! bloody dangerous criminals!! After that they probably went to the nearest whorehouse to arrest these dangerous animals!! Just don't shout booo!! too loudly! - eish, i'm feeling so safe now!! - Clown

  Pathetic
11/03/2008 14:09
I hope justice is served on this one, our police force is pathetic! - Ray

  Come on!
11/03/2008 14:12
Why focus on students when there are so many other things wrong in this country. Police should look at their own corruption and lack of protecting innocent people. There are dozens of murders, rapes, assaults etc every single day. they must stop wasting their time and sort out the real crime. Students are not a danger to society, they are in fact the only ones that might be able to save this country in a few years with their skills. TIA, get out! - Jacques

I think it is police jealousy!!
11/03/2008 14:17
Remember... these students had to be able to pass matric to be able to attend uni. Obviously the police are very jealous of this fact! The way they treated women (with force and pepper spray) sickened me, and made me lose the little respect that I had left for them! - Juan

  Students...???
11/03/2008 14:20
A few students sucking in a few joints and tossing down some liquor in a varsity town on the weekend... I mean what's the world coming coming too? Who's ever heard of such criminal behaviour? - Nick

  TOMAS,TOMAS,TOMAS!!!!
11/03/2008 14:22
The fact is most junkies are white and indians and don't mention coloureds...Here you go once again sounding DUMB...You have to bring colour into this...Ok..Most of the glue sniffing pick pockets are BLACK,most of the DAGGA killers are BLACK,Hell most of every form of substance abuser in this country who is in fact directly related to crime, are BLACK.fact is,I would rather sit next to a white, indian or coloured on high on Ecstacy than sit next to a black guy high on GLUE...IDIOT - nWo

  Striking students
11/03/2008 14:26
Would we have been appeased if the students were those striking and destroying property at Wits / UJ? - MJ

  MATIES RAID
11/03/2008 14:27
MR POLICE MAN If you read the article you would have been able to deduce that MR Moseley was not even born at that time you nicompoop!! Get over yourself and your guilt trip and your victim mentality. - Theuns Kruger

  Colin...
11/03/2008 14:28
You imbecile. One look at the author's photo should tell you that he was about 8 years old in the 80s. Probably still wanted to be a fireman and hadnt even considered journalism. - greggo

  Moseley you beauty!
11/03/2008 14:30
I love the way you write, tell it like it my boy! In fact while you at it, get them to take the racist John off as a writter and have you write a double column to complete the pleasure. And no, I'm not Moseley's ex stellies room mate. - Gary

  Didn't fire a shot!
11/03/2008 14:30
First they denied having weapons... then they denied it being armed.... then they denied having fired any shots, but on the video you can clearly see the cop fire a shot upon entering the pub. Maybe the gun that he didn't have and that was not loaded went off by accident. Colin this is not a tit for tat competition. You complain about what concerns you and we will complain about what concerns us. - Estelle

  To colin
11/03/2008 14:33
This is no longer the 80's - that's the point, ain't it? - Kien

  Stellies Raids
11/03/2008 14:39
I was a student at the Bos a couple of years ago and for all of those 5 years i never experienced something like this. Really Mr Policeman really throwing around a "slightly getarra-ed" student girl must be doing so much for your ego. - Cynthia

  RE: MR POLICE MAN
11/03/2008 14:41
Colin, if I'm not mistaken, Mr Moseley was about 2 years old in the 80s. So I doubt he would have been able to write a substantial piece of journalism on the indignities suffered by your sister and her classmates. There's no need to lash out at him for writing a brilliant article on a current event. Go David! - Fellow Student

  Students are harmless
11/03/2008 14:47
For the SAPS - right idea, wrong target. The dealers are the guys to go for, not the end users. Enjoyed the mention of Rhodes in Grahamstown - that crowd were always a noisy lot! But they turned out a reasonable journalist; thanks for the article, David, and a much needed laugh or two. - Dave Robbins

  Re: Colin Mr Police Man
11/03/2008 14:47
Colin are you an absolute neanderthal? 25 years ago "Mr Moseley" was probably 5 years old! Stop whinging, it was 25 years ago, get over it or are you going to flog the (very) dead horse for the next 25 years? - Carel

  column, David Moseley
11/03/2008 14:50
Awesome article! Funniest thing I've read in a long time! Unfortunately I'm a student from the UFS, therefore I'm a bit taken back about the "harmless"comment! Dude, WE ARE NOT ALL LIKE THAT!These racist maplotters from farms in AWB-districts, are not the norm...I for one, take offence in stereotyping all the kids from UFS as racist and conservative! Still, awesome column! - lenka

  Grow up Colin!
11/03/2008 14:53
Colin you're lame and pathetic. David Moseley was most definitely a toddler when what you refer to happened, why can't you just go with your little lame assed comments and get back to work. I'm amazed at how people like you who was are doing much better than the maids out there (and didn't experience it!), have the biggest chip on their shoulder!! - Leigh

  Rhodes

we are in the 20th century now not the 80' or the 60's so get with the program and get up to speed with the times of today. - terence

What are you going on about?!
11/03/2008 15:07
Trying to compare raids of 25 years ago under a different (and oppressive) government to what happened in Bosch is quite frankly, obsurd. You say 'As a journo where were MR Moseley...' etc etc MOST OF US INVOLVED IN THIS WEREN'T EVEN BORN!!!! Get out of the past you moron. - John Qwelane, is that you?

  RE:Colin
11/03/2008 15:09
Hey Colin I'm pretty sure 25 years ago David Moseley was probably keeping himself amused with fingerpainting and "show and tell" instead of writing about police brutality in the townships. Just a thought dude... - juz

  Operation Rhodent
11/03/2008 15:09
Nats - I remember that operation by the Grahamstown boys in blue... it made walking back to the res a really interesting experience (trying not to stagger, spew or fall) - Ex-Rhodent

  To our boys in blue...
11/03/2008 15:14
What a great way to convince our soon to graduate future proffesionals not to leave the country. Great work boys!!! Maybe you should make it a two for one and raid an old-age home? I'm sure you would find some seriously dangerous citizens... - Nick

  Rhodes? Police?
11/03/2008 15:15
David funny stuff man. I was at Rhodes at the same time you were but I can't remember you digs borrowing a cow - legenday. I am at pains to remind you of police efforts in Grahamstown when we were there to pick up students for being dronk op straat. I was a victim of this one night while walking one particularly nice girl home. Needless to say a night in jail did not make her fall in love with me. They arrested a friend of mine for being drunk in public. Turns he was physically disabled - manci

  Harmless student fun
11/03/2008 15:15
Geez, you really don't like the Free State! I mean, sure what those boys from Reitz did was insulting. but "degrade their fellow countrymen in the most abhorrent manner" seems a little ridiculous. Did they beat them? Rape them? Rob them? because that would be much more abhorrent, really. They were stupid, and they're paying for it, but seriously, many people from all communities are being treated in a most abhorrent manner by fellow citizens, without any international media being interested. - kovsie

  Tomas..
11/03/2008 15:17
Tomas, this has nothing to do with the "black government". Go play the race card somewhere else. Im sure you are happy to see the black government fail. Irelevant at this point. Students were attacked black or white. Mr Moseley- great article! We do not want to see any form of police brutallity. Would have been in Bohemia during the raid- but a very pretty woman saved my *SS by keeping me at home. These cops have to come before the law. They watch too much movies. - Sabelo

  To Colin
11/03/2008 15:18
Yo, Colin. Don't mean to be sarcastic, eh.. ja actually I do: Baas Mosely was probably still in diapers 25 yrs ago if he was swotting in 2000... - Poepol

  Rhodent
11/03/2008 15:18
Colin, David wasn't around 25 years ago, you can tell by his dashing picture! - Gavin

11/03/2008 15:18
my dear Colin - David was three or four years old I think. - manci

  To Colin
11/03/2008 15:25
Dear Colin. Why do you bring race in? The people in the pubs where black, white, coloured, christian, athiast, straight, gay, male, female... this has got nothing to do with race. Please stop to feel sorry for yourself and trying to make everything about you. These people's rights have been violated, and what happened is wrong. Should I always go back and talk about white afrikaans speaking women and children dying of hunger, disease and assault by the hands of the british in concentration camps? Or about the fact that the white population was more than halved and the only reason that there are only 5 million whites in South Africa and not 15 is because of the lost generation of the whites? No, we move on, and leave the past behind us. Today we acknowledge everyone?s right to live and the privileged are trying to help the previously disadvantaged, even if you can't see it. And I'm talking helping beyond taxes. Whites are trying, the whole nation is trying, and then we have you? - appalled

  Rhodents
11/03/2008 15:26
Ja, I was at Rhodes when they had that operation Rhodent thingy, but I was such a diligent student I was probably tucked up in bed while all the evil Rhodes drinkers were being arrested. I always did prefer a sparkling water than the mayhem of the Rat. Not. Still, on the two occasions we did need the police (when the farmer came back for his cow and when my mate Kev had his wheels stolen off his car) they were pretty helpful. I think. - DM

  for the philosophy students
11/03/2008 15:41
And the moral of the story is? to be or not to be drunk that is the question! - Kai

  What a laugh!
11/03/2008 15:45
Definitely excessive force! And to all the holier-than-thous saying the students should have either been in bed or studying - what are you smoking? What did you do over weekends in your early twenties, whether you were students or not? You partied - that's what being young is all about! And Colin, if this is happening in township pubs why don't you record it or report the police? (and I suspect the writer was still at school 25yrs ago) - Nel

  MR POLICE MAN
11/03/2008 15:50
The point I am trying to make is that stuff like this have happened in our society for decades and white people in general did not had the GUTS to condemn it - now that it have happened to white students it has become the biggest sin but the darkies in the Township grow up with it without any condemnation from the white community. The age of MR Moseley in this regard is irrelevant - the fact that most of you only refer to this indicates to me you have no relevant counter argument to my comment so TALK TO THE HAND CUS THE FACE IS BUZZY. - colin

  Leftout
11/03/2008 15:52
While I too can appreciate the merit in this article and indeed had to stifle a guffaw or 8, I take GREAT exception to the fact that nobody has mentioned the excellent drinking capabilities of students from Maritzburg! Granted, I was there a long time ago, but we were very proud of our alcohol embibing prowess!! - vodka

  The Race Card!
11/03/2008 15:52
I think the issue here is the unnecessary use of force and quite frankly the stupidity of the members of the police force involved in the raid. It is sad that the Race Card is always used. Colin, do us and yourself a favour, in the future think before you speak. It would go a long way towards better race relations! - Gareth

  Its by time
11/03/2008 15:53
I am from Stellenbosch and have not seen any footage of the raid on the pubs but worked as a barman in a studend pub back in the 90's and talk from expereince. I personally think that althought some might say its a bit harsh and brutal its good that the police in Stellenbosch made there presence felt. The students for one think the town belongs to them and show no respect to the town and its people. - Clint

  police
11/03/2008 15:58
me and some of my mates was abused by police in 2006 because we were talking loudly when we stopped for a garage pie , and we were asualted badly , after that i have no respect for police officers - piesang

  The Race Card!
11/03/2008 16:01
Why do Stellenbosch students feel that they are above the law? I lived in Stellenbosch for 2 years and black students were not welcome in those pubs. There are drugs there therefore the police have the right to raid. Those students are not above the law just because they are white. If the police needed to use force-let them! They were not exactly going to be welcomed inside to conduct the drug raid so i believe it was necessary. More drug raids needed there! - Vula

  Stelli students
11/03/2008 16:04
Having studied in the Bosch myself. I can say with authority that stelli students are not the best behaved bunch especially after a lot of fishbowls. - Namhla

  What about Inge Lotz
11/03/2008 16:04
So they have a drug raid, shove people around and show the world they can "police". I am curious where these law enforcers were hiding when Inge Lotz was murdered in her home.. allegedly for Tik money. Oh, wait, they decided to pin it on the grieving boyfriend, he was an easier target. - RustyRose

  David a really great read!
11/03/2008 16:05
To Colin....I hope you have taken note of the comments directed at you. You need to build a gigantic bridge and get over it. - carol

  Luv ya
11/03/2008 16:05
Thank the good Lord for Rhodes students and alumni! We are the only ones left with a sense of humour. Thanks, David, for a good laugh. I think. - Ex-Rhodian living in Stellenbosch

  CCTV cameras
11/03/2008 16:07
One wonders if the cops would have been so keen to fire their weapons, pepper spray prone students and manhandle female students they way they did if they'd known the CCTV cameras (and now the world, via youtube) were watching. Makes denial a little more difficult. Next time, expect there to be an accidental discharge or two which happen to take out the CCTV cameras. - Anymouse

  Colin
11/03/2008 16:07
Haha Colin looks like your one of the uneducated masses. Good article David! - Herman

  To Colin
11/03/2008 16:08
Colin, the point we are making by refering to Mr Mosely's age is that most of the people (?) on this forum were to young to complain about something that happened more than a decade ago. Why don;t you ask the BJF to complain on your behalf. I don't see any blacks complaining on the white man's behalf so why should we complain on your behalf. Go to your master JQ. You can both write some poetry about how awful life in the new SA is. Later :) - Innocentnvv

  It wasn't about the drugs

It was a smack-down, it was about making an example of those students. The fact that very few drugs were found anyway is actually beside the point. It was a demonstration of force at another "white bastion" university, a nod in the direction of the whole Reitz debacle. If it really was about the drugs, they'd be hitting lots more clubs in a lot more co-ordinated fashion, every single weekend. Why was this a one-off? - Anymouse

Colin stop being such a narrowed minded twat!! We all codem what happened in the past but surely you have to get over it sometime!! Most of us were to young to even know what was going on then! And because the media was controlled by the government most our parents didnt even really know what was going on! What happened was sick, and completely un called for! Being a student and a bit sceptic to the future of this country, this is more than enough reason fro me to get my degree and leave. - Matie Student( Jay)
