David Moseley

I write this in reference to the Grammar Nazi who would have me hauled off to Apostrophe Auschwitz and probably every single person who can't engage in rational debate in this fine land of ours.

For sure, last week I wrote "Brit's" instead of Brits - or whatever it's meant to be. So, my bad on that front. We're talking about an errant apostrophe here, not a misplaced stock-exchange fraction that might actually have some impact on the real world.

I've never been one to care much for grammar because it makes absolutely no sense to me. Written language is so utterly arbitrary and so much in flux I can't really fathom why people would grouse about something so meaningless. The way we speak and write today is unrecognisable from years gone past. It will change even more in the future.

I have a friend whose initials are SG, and Sarah, I hope that wasn't you having a go... because if it was I'm going to hit you with a frying pan next time I see you.

Anyway, the comments sections of these columns - particularly Jon Qwelane's - make for interesting and telling reading. And it's not just on News24 (as I've mentioned before). Read any column contribution on any news site from any corner of the world and you'll find eager punters raring to rip the throat out of the writer. Or at the very least break a typing finger or two.

I haven't read many of Mr Qwelane's contributions because - quite frankly - the topics don't appeal to me and I really couldn't give a toss about whether the Black Forum of Journalists prefers to meet at black-only imbizos, or, to be completely honest, anything to do with politics or the President's ineffectiveness.

Mr Qwelane, though, is always provocative and seems to have the best interests of the country at heart. He has a drum and he beats it.

Telling responses

It's the responses that are telling. I can almost guarantee that 99% of his readers have yet to meet the man, yet in opposition to his opinions, the majority always cry "racist". He's got an opinion and he's allowed to share it - as do the readers. The pity is that people are rarely as pithy and don't engage Mr Qwelane, or many of the opinionated people, with a rational argument. Besides, if he so gets your back up, why continue to read his opinions?

My feeling is that people like to get angry. On glancing very briefly over his musings I would say that on quite a few occasions he's looking for a reaction. And you're getting duped every time. And why not? I've always believed that these little paragraphs are a great avenue to encourage debate amongst the readers and not a place to dictate opinion.

The reactions, though, point to a bigger picture. People are so entrenched in their beliefs that they refuse to listen to another's point of view. I've read many things that I've found disagreeable - most notably Dickens' Oliver Twist - yet I've never expressed my distaste in an ALL CAPS assault on the Victorian era's great scribe.

My wise old boss always used to say, opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one.

  good article

unfortunately the responses are not moderated enough - besides its mostly expats coming here and making statements to rile up emotions whilst trying to convince themselves they made the right move aweh.. - fern

This edition of your column is somewhat out of your usual character? I don't think many news24 readers have much respect for Qwelane's opinions. Given that columns are opinions, does good journalism not at least try to assess other opinions on the same topic to gauge rationality? He's gone off on a tangent and has a major chip off his shoulder. Perhaps he should move on into active politics. - Joe Soap

  opinions
25/03/2008 13:13
Everybody has an opinions. Does that however give everybody the right to express them, given the volatile racial environment of South-Africa. Clearly yes according to News24. Using your Nazi reference, Hitler had an opinion, but clearly his opinions were wrong. Should we promote such opinions or oppose it. - Leon

  Opinions & Assholes
25/03/2008 13:13
The other version of this is: Assholes are like opinions. Only valuable if it is your own. - Biker Bill

  No sense to me
25/03/2008 13:14
Just like how grammer makes no sense to you, Qwelane's articles make no sense to me. I will NEVER agree with anything that man says !!! - Ian

Thanks 4 Putting things in perspective
25/03/2008 13:18
i thought it was just me who feels this way Super Dave(SD)! Sometimes i find myself reading the comments in JQ's columns 1st before reading the article. And i know if there's more than a 100 comments, he said something about some White person. If there are only a few comments, i know he either said something bad about Thabo Mbeki or some other Black person( u can put 2 and 2 together). Strangely enough i only read yours and JQ's colums! I smaak u ouens stukkend! ;-) - G Funk

  Grammar
25/03/2008 13:25
Grammar is the first thing you learn in journalism school, is it not? Our command of our own languages goes a great deal to illustrate our level of education. Sucking at a language means you do not have the ability to express yourself satisfactorily. It kind of reminds me of the essay on "Newspeak" George Orwell wrote at the end of "1984". As for Jon Qwelane: he and Deon Maas should mud-wrestle for the title of "man-bitch of the decade". - JP Strauss

  Ian?
25/03/2008 13:27
Just curious? Is "grammer" someone who makes little things out of nothing, takes things with a pinch of salt or someone who schnarfs his socks? Or maybe all of the above? - Nick

I am suspicious - why this subject?
25/03/2008 13:27
David, point is that we have had enough of lies, twisting the truth, racism, propoganda and half truths, not to mention people like JohnQ and Max duP trying to tell us that we are idiots and presenting their indoctrination and Judas-agendas for us to consider! We have had enough. We know what is true. Please John, don't you also bow to those levels of rubbish. We will think and decide for ourselves! - TC

  Chipped shoulder-Joe Soap
25/03/2008 13:31
Here we go again ?Chip of that shoulder? or is it ?chip on the shoulder? or ?chipped shoulder? Joe Soap, it is no wonder with moronic phrases like these you will always come short. Get a life; use a phrase that depicts the man. Jon Q is an astonishing/brilliant man, if any of you idiots haven?t met him. He is someone you would invite to tea and cookies and he will teach you guys a thing or two about the past, present and future. He is extremely diligent and his brain is extremely active. He might displace your thinking capacity every now and again, but morons like the average Joe Soap and company have no clue to what this man is really saying in articles. If you don?t understand then call the man a racist. It was noted that each and every comment on ?Denials? towards JQ showed how poorly the Whites in this country can interpret or better appreciate an intelligent article coming from a Black man. Well replied Jon. - Danie Botes

25/03/2008 13:32
Awww man, darn, I was hoping for the usual good laugh from reading your column Super Dave. Just make sure that next week you're twice as funny to make up for this frighteningly serious column, k? Now wait while I head off to find my weekly laughs somewhere else. Till next week, that is :) - Richard

  Not possible
25/03/2008 13:41
You can not debate or "enagage" someone like qwelane on this forum. It does not allow multiple responses or active debate. You pretty much have one comment before comments are closed and the author of an article can hardley reply. Therefore, people use their one chance to state their view. It is simply a matter of the nature of the forum. - Paul

  Brainwashing
25/03/2008 13:50
I agree that people are so entrenched in their believes, they refuse to believe anything else even if it's the truth. For many years whites have been brainwashed that blacks are stupid, can't amount to anything are 'skelms'etc.Blacks have been taught that the white man is the enemy& must not be trusted. Many years of apartheid brainwashing is taking it's toll. Any reasonable person will know that the above is not true. But it's no use telling that to the people that believe that are set in their ways. - Godfrey

  Indeed
25/03/2008 13:54
Yes, it is quite amazing - I think you can judge the quality of a column - or opinion therein - by the number of comments. I've noticed that the articles with the more pathetic opinions have many replies and postings, and some of the really well-written, even-minded ones have none. So it seems that people are stung into action when upset, and do little if min when impressed. I suppose it should be the other way around - send in a complimentary comment for a good effort, and ignore the bad ones - Marc

  You are weird
25/03/2008 13:58
If Jon Q is so clever, as you say, he should be good at his job, ie journalism. Sorry for you boet, but I don't think he is (my opinion). His work is very opinionated, which is wrong in the first place, but the worst part is that his opinion really does suck - and believe me, it is hardly ever the opinion of an intelligent man. I think the last thing you can call him is intelligent. Again, only an opinion - and I don't claim to be clever. But maybe cleverererer than him. And you. - To Danie Botes

  Why read his articles then...
25/03/2008 13:58
The very same people who don't want Jon to be allowed to write his articles because they don't agree with him, want to be given space on this forum even if other people don't agree with them. Will they be happy if the editors of News24 can refuse to publish their postings because they don't agree with them? Some people will never know democracy even if it come knocking at their front door. - Godfrey

Firstly, about the grammer, maybe pedantic, but if you are going to be a recognised columnist then one should expect you to be gramatically correct. Secondly, about that clown qwelane, u r probably right, most people have not met him, I know I have not, but he did sent me a rather provocative emailing wanting to meet up with me, so perhaps I should have accepted his invite. Only problem is I could not lower my standards so drastically. - Houston

  Grammar and Anger Management

David, I look forward to your column every week, and your grammar has always been impeccable. I prefer to focus on the content, so will eagerly await your next column as always. Can't you write one daily, to give the good guys (and gals like myself) a fix, and the bad guys some grammar to check? ;-) have a great week! a fan xxxx - EJ

  Grammar and Spelling

What I find shocking in comments, is the gross amount of spelling errors. And yes, I sometimes get the feeling that columns was only written to get reaction. Such is life, I guess... - Charley

  Which hole?
25/03/2008 14:34
assholes v arseholes? As long as you/readers do not pronounce it without stressing the "r" I can live with it! - Andrew Hole

why are you reading this column...?
25/03/2008 14:39
what i don't understand is why people who seem to hate this column or anyone else's column are still reading it. go away and annoy someone else and leave these columns to the people who enjoy them - it doesn't matter what is written, presumably someone somewhere is reading it and liking it! Still, i make sure i read this one every week - its always funny, at least that's what i think! - Suzy

  Watch out SG!
25/03/2008 14:47
Sarah, you better run for cover girl! David is coming at you with a frying pan and he's angry. SG, on the other hand David, probably refers to the grade on which you passed grammar at school, Standard Grade ;) - Jonathan

  bad spelling =bad journalist!
25/03/2008 14:54
I have yet to open News24.co.za one day and NOT find at least one grammatical, spelling or other mistake somewhere on the site. The same goes for IOL.co.za. I spot mistakes like that at least once or twice a week.Every week. Sometimes big, sometimes small, but always present. It's not that I care that much about typos, but it tells you a lot about the pride and workmanship of people who get paid to write for a living.I have never found an error on big news sites in other countries before. - thatotherdude

  Grammar - blah blah
25/03/2008 15:03
Your column always makes for interesting reading. I still don't get the whole apostraphe thing anyways, what's the point, people know what you mean anyways. To add to your bosses quote: "opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one - and sometimes they just stink." G.I. - Maruis

  Great stuff!
25/03/2008 15:11
I totally agree with you..JQ's columns are fun to read..he likes getting people peeved off.. people take his columns too personally. You and John both write interesting and enjoyable columns..you get us to think a bit. - Mary

I wonder about people writing columns for a news website without at least being a little pedantic about being grammatically correct. Everybody makes mistakes though, so no worries :) - Grammar Police
