Thinking about the future

David Moseley

When I was studying journalism we had our ethics lectures on a Friday morning. This was a problem. Thursday nights were notoriously festive in Grahamstown, and in the beginning of the year Friday morning lectures also had to vie for attention with the Super 12.

It's obvious which won out in the end. All in, I reckon I attended three ethics lectures - if we even had that many.

I remember hearing some congenial old fellow waffle on about freedom of expression and the - I think - three possible ways you could violate that luxury according to our newly minted constitution. There's something in there about inciting violence, war propaganda and perpetrating hate speech which, naturally, includes being a racist plonker.

All of the above, of course, would and should result in the swift execution of your career in mainstream journalism. Then I went back to sleep and only really gave it some thought last week, when I saw that David Bullard had been canned from his column-writing post at the Sunday Times.

I've read the offending piece a few times since and, apart from it being a completely arbitrary and relatively weaker effort from Bullard's pen, it doesn't really strike me as a Hendrik Verwoerd-inspired piece of prose.

In terms of evolution it's kind of true. If Africa hadn't been explored by the evil white man where would it be today? Probably in the same place, but with a lot less finger pointing and blaming going on.

I often wish the Dutch hadn't been the first to arrive here. All they've given us is an oddly god-fearing sector of society, apartheid and a language that sounds like solid cement getting chewed by a lawn-mower (though the melk tart has been a bonus and there's no such thing as too much Leon Schuster).

Snacking on tapas

It's a pity the French or the Spanish didn't get here when the great colonising race was on. I'd be very happy dripping French consonants off my lips, or snacking on tapas all day. Alas.

If the Poms hadn't invaded Scotland, then the Scots would still be running around in their Celtic and Rangers kilts chasing wild haggis. If the steam engine hadn't been invented and the industrial revolution failed to gather momentum (and the French hadn't insisted that everyone bathe in talcum powder) then the world would undoubtedly be a very different place. But it isn't. The past happened. When the white people of the bad old days set out to conquer they certainly weren't the most enlightened bunch around.

I'm not entirely sure what Bullard was trying to say, and if he's anything like a normal person I'm sure he leaves writing some of those columns to the last minute because he may not always have something pertinent on his mind.

I think he was saying that Africa has a history of blaming its ails on the past, where instead the continent and this country should be thinking and planning to make a better and brighter future.

That's just my interpretation. I think he may have gone about it in a fairly cynical way - which is to be expected. But I think labeling the man a racist for saying that the inhabitants of the continent would still be herding cattle had the past never happened is a bit extreme. Besides, in three weeks time no one will remember what all the fuss was about in the first place.

Thanks Dave - a good sensible take on the situation. - Lejane

  Why...
15/04/2008 09:53
..does every single columnist always feel the need to take a smack at Afrikaans and those who speak it? "Look at the wonderfull sunshine, all the fluffy bunnies! And man I hate those stupid Dutchmen!" Bla bla bla bla bla. - random guy

  History
15/04/2008 09:55
Actually the English (not the Dutch) instituted Racial Segregation after they ousted old Paul Kruger because they wanted his share of the rich gold reef in the "Transvaal". What history books also neglect to tell you is that during the "Boer war", some of the local Black population fought alongside the Boers. - italic_s

  haha
15/04/2008 09:57
lol David, nicely written but be careful - you might also get the axe! - Brian

  Bullard is a racist
15/04/2008 09:58
In my opinion Bullard's piece was not a harmless bit of prose. It refelected the very real and racisist propganda that the white governemtn was perpetuating throughout apartheid. It was merely a repeat of the old statements that without the white man blacks would never have developed "civilisation". Imagine if a writer in Germany today wrote an article claiming that the jews took all the jobs from the superior Aryan race. There would be an uproar and rightly so. Bullard is a racist. - Warren

  Its True
15/04/2008 09:58
The irony of the situation is that Bullard's comments are anthropologically and evolutionary 100% correct. So how can mentioning those facts be racist. Is it not perhaps that we are being too sensitive again......... - PI

The grass is always greener on the other side!!
15/04/2008 10:07
If you are not happy with the food in SA. Start a tappas bar! You might even make a lot of money. :) The French and the Spanish would have brought their own problems. I think we have enough at the moment. - JJ

Nice one..... - Cassie

  Africa should thank the colonialists
15/04/2008 10:21
Actually I agree with DB in someways. If it was not for the "invaders", Africa would not have Modern Medicine, Education, Electricity and Transportation. The continent was far, far behind Europe. So how about looking at the brighter side for a change. I am not saying forget the oppression, but maybe the positives can make up for some of the past wrongs. Sometimes good does come from the wrongs committed ... just my two cents :-) - Supposed White Racist

  Interpretation
15/04/2008 10:22
So whats wrong with biltong and boerewors David?Nice article.Brings one to question the convenient interpretation of Bullards words. That figuratively speaking it was racist and it was literally racist!Have a go.Manipulate that. - psyocbabble

  The spanish
15/04/2008 10:34
You do realise that the Spanish was perhaps the most effective nation at eradicating native populations to assert total dominance? As another said, the Boers of the olden days (the Voortrekkers) actually tried to barter with locals and Piet Retief even bought land legally from Dingane. It was the British who instituted formal segregation first, after they took the country from the independent Boer republics. The Bothas of late simply took this idea from them, regrettably, and wrote it into law. - Yawn

Masters of evil doings salutes themselves....
15/04/2008 10:41
The next topic will be if South Africa hadn't been explored by the evil white man and his apartheid, where would it be today? We can't just forget about the past because it is the past that made us poor. We need to rectify the past injustices while shaping our future. We will continue to blame the evil white man because he?s the cause of our social state today like it or not. Gone are those days for such stupid propaganda?white man bla bla.. bla.. nonsense.. - siza

  Colonisation
15/04/2008 10:43
Whether it's dutch colonisation or French it makes no difference my friend. The point is any colonisation will always have a bad taste in the end. Take a look at countries like, DRC, Ivory Coast and all other African states that were colonised you will see that either sides the African continent is in a bad shape. - Thokozani

  he went too far
15/04/2008 10:44
Bullard went too. what he was saying is that africans have no expertise's and no civilisation which conclude that europeans are superior and africans are inferior cause they choose to herd they cattle europeans technology f#@king up our planet now. - thabo

It may not be safe to criticize Blacks any more, but the Afrikaners still seem to be fair game
15/04/2008 10:45
If anyone has seen a bit of the world (as you seem to have with your references to the French and Spanish), one soon realizes that English is not all it is jacked up to be. Except when one is Anglophone, I suppose. Well, the Americans have found a way around that problem too: just talk louder. - Anony Moose

The Afrikaaners 'they did it' illusion
15/04/2008 10:45
I see that many Afrikaners are now blaming Apartheid and segregation on the Brits, in their normal - 'Apartheid had nothing to do with us' chorus. Could someone, more knowledgeable than I, please provide the dates, and under whose government the following took place: 1. Racial Classification 2. The immorality act 3. The group areas act And could someone please tell us when mass reclamation of land and forced movals, took place under these acts - Sophiatown, District 6 and many othersv - Cliff

  confused?!
15/04/2008 10:52
Am still finding it puzzling how an editor that allowed the publication of the article is the very man claiming that bullard is a racist and firing him?! Otherwise...awesome article and with regards to the foreign foods...boerie tapas to get the old dutchmen's mouths watering? - Adam

  Too sensitive are we?
15/04/2008 10:55
I always find it very odd when blacks are insulted the whites say they are too sensitive. There is a difference in blaming the past and recognising it so that you can move onto the future. What happened to the saying "In order to know where you are going, you must know where you come from" or something like that (my bantu education sometimes lets me down).Blacks are not blaming the past but recognising the past. What David wrote was very racist. - Pasta

  Well done!
15/04/2008 10:56
Now you've successfully insulted every group in SA except the English speakers! And don't you worry about those nice French consonants, modern English is mostly stripped down Norman French anyway! :) Honestly though: except for the cheap shot at the Afrikaner, I thought it was quite spot-on. - E

  Confused
15/04/2008 11:03
Whether David's piece was racist or not, the end of the matter is that he was fired. Now this is where I get confused. I am sure there are politicians who has done far more worse things. Some of you can mention some examples. But they are all still very much employed. Someone please shed some light to this confusion of mine. - SimpleSense

  Rubber consonants
15/04/2008 11:08
Thats nice pom.Take another swipe at the Afrikaners.Take a look at the rest of Africa and a close one at the west side.I suppose they speak french for fun.Didnt think you read history as the French Hugonotes must be a mith and the english didnt rule Zim as there seems to be no problems in that country.Get your facts straight before you write crap like this. You would have eaten that consonants with a burning tyre around your neck. - shane

  Ag shame
15/04/2008 11:12
After reading this peace of trash most people would understand why there is a forum for black journalist. In fact it does not say much... Stating the obvious in some regards and deviding people in others in an already divided country by an "educated" person is shameful! Go back to your Britain where you belong and watch how your England play rugby and get beaten by most respected rugby nations! - hrs

  Facts??
15/04/2008 11:19
I think you slept through more than just ethics class David... Please show me a "wild haggis" please...Haggis is a dish like "pofadder" not an animal. - Bosbok

  Yawn
15/04/2008 11:19
What tripe. If the french and spanish were here, you'll still have the same situation, maybe worse off as the majority would have left in the 90s and gone back to Europe. the only good thing that would have come out of it would be that Spain and France would have been better destinations to emigrate to than London. - Krantz

  Dutchman says ...
15/04/2008 11:23
Good article David, always is. Must agree with you on the language issue, especially after the bulls lose at Loftus. David Bullard's column was not all that bad, try reading Jon Qwelanes latest. I agree with you and take it in the context in which it was meant ... - Justin

  Thinking about the future
15/04/2008 11:30
Dear mister Moseley I appreciate that you are genetically inclined to make fascist statements to further your own career (See Oswald Moseley Second World War English Fascist) but if it were not for the original God fearing sector of society there would be nothing to plunder for the unGod fearing sector of society of today They would be running around killing birds with slingshots with gold nuggets for ammo - 100% Boer

What he said was true, but not the rule.
15/04/2008 11:31
One only has to research Ancient Great Zimbabwe and the Lemba Tribe and you get an idea of what we as a continent were capable of, look at Egypt, so many examples. But the other side of the coin is that it is a fact that countries that got independence before RSA, whether through gross mismanagement, or just plain bad luck have not done so well. The fact is that without Apartheid, and the 'whites pushing things along how much of what RSA has would have been possible? TRUE SAY!!! - Mabandla

He is probaly not racist but,
15/04/2008 11:40
I read the column, he also said if a black family lost a child to wild animals there would be mourning for two weeks and all would forgotten. Thats not true of course, the offending animal would be hunted and killed, the child would be remembered by the parents for the rest of their lives. He assumes that black people didn't have certain emotions, envy, jealousy, greed, etc. When he says everyone would have only the number of cattle that they need. Lastly he implied that genocide was a norm. - Mfumbesi

  Ignorant SP
15/04/2008 11:56
You should have a greater understanding of a topic before making public comments on it. Firstly, Cecil J Rhodes implemented the first Apartheid laws in the Cape colony. Secondly the French did came to the Cape in 1688 of which I am 13 generation and lastly may its because you do not understand the Afrikaans language that it sounds strange to you. Reading your column I find it hard to believe that there is still people like you. You sound like a prot?e of Alex Erwin. Good luck to you. Dawan - Dawan

  Tired
15/04/2008 11:57
I promised myself this is the last time I read one of these articles on news24, I really do not need to know the useless and clueless thoughts going around in empty would be journalists minds... - Afrikaner

  suff being 'politcally correct'
15/04/2008 11:58
Thanks for this column. The time has come to stop pussy-footing and drop the political correctness! Let's build on facts and address the future with truth. - TC

  please, people....
15/04/2008 11:59
What people fail to realise is that , without colonialism, Africa would not be the war torn, famine-ridden place it is now. Most civil wars in Africa are a direct result of what the colonialists left Africa with after they pulled out. How can anybody suggest that the majority of Africans are better off now just because they can watch the privilaged few drive cars? Most Africans cant afford food, let alone the so-called luxuries that we are supposed to have given them. - greggo

  Afritude
15/04/2008 12:01
True mabandla, but believe it or not most of the troubles we had in African countries that gained independence before southern Africa were a direct result of former colonial masters turning tribe versus tribe with the intentions of stabilizing these countries for economic gain, take Angola as an example the front of the cold war the people suffered for the interests of apartheid SA, the CIA and USSR i maybe we would have been better off without the curse of the white man. - KJ

  warren is ignorant
15/04/2008 12:03
We are all adults and as such we know that you can not always say what you think to, say your friend or your wife. In the press this should not adhere. The only reason Bullard's column was made into a big deal is because it is true and it hurts.Look at the facts my friend:democracy, open markets, medical revolution was brought to Africa from the bad WEST.The few bits in Africa that works ,works on Western democratic law(very unAfrican)....the rest is subject to gross human atrocities. - William

  This is no joke...
15/04/2008 12:03
The thing is,he has consistently been writing stuff that belittle black people, just read his past articles. It's easy to dismiss his article as satire if you are not on the receiving end. - Godfrey

  Fairly good effort
15/04/2008 12:13
Thank you for writing about a relevant topic today - even if it's going to be forgotten in 3 weeks - and managing not to be overly polarising in your opinions and witty humour. However, while taking an unnecessary swipe at Afrikaans-speakers may delight you and your friends, it leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of us who may be a lot more open-minded and progressively thinking than you portray us. Please try and be a bit less condescending. - Jaco

You're all a bunch of babies!!!
15/04/2008 12:17
In life there is always good and bad, If you want the good you have to learn to live with the bad. You can't spend your life blaming your past for what you are in your present instead you should be looking at your past to guide you to the future you want. The future is yours to mould, so quit whinging and get to making a better future. RSA aportions blame at the drop of a hat, GROW UP ALL OF YOU!!! We all know what went before shaped what we have now, but if you can't let that colour your future. - Mabandla

  cannot tolerate any form
15/04/2008 12:18
Agree with Warren, Bollard peace was clearly condescending towards black people. The press and public should not allow any form of racial hate speech, no matter how subtle. This goes for Bollard and our old favourite, Jon Qwelane. Rather, we as a nation, black and white, should stamp out these old thought patterns. - Leon

  Not enought credit
15/04/2008 12:19
Modern writers don't give enough credit to the old African civilisations. There was the ancient kingdon of Zimbabwe, as well as many trade routes down the coast of Africa long before Rome invaded England. But, it is difficult to argue that the settlers found tribes which warred against each other for cattle. - MJ

  Ethics Lecture
15/04/2008 12:23
You got to be kidding right!!! You mean to say you had an ethics lecture during apartheid. Man that's funny. Ethics was probably delivered as the wrong thing to do. - A new DJ

  Classic
15/04/2008 12:30
Almost too easy Dave... Next week have a self depreciating go at the 'english invaders' in SA and watch them all jump up and down too. Man everyone is sooo sensitive. - M

  Dutch
15/04/2008 12:40
Loved your swipe at the 'dutch' aka Afrikaners, David. BTW, it's 'melktert' and not 'melk tart'. Shows you the sub-standard education the English have compaired to the bi/trilingual Afrikaners. Tut-tut! - Georg

  Mabandla ...
15/04/2008 12:51
Do you know what it took for apartheid (and colonialism) to build South Africa (and Europe)? Cheap labour. In the case of colonialism, it took enforced black slavery and later commercial exploitation. The same with apartheid - blacks provided cheap labour to build this country. Now post-colonialism African countries did not have that luxury. Even now in SA, transformation is taking place amid equalisation yet white-development was aided by cheap black labour. These two are incomparable. - TheOne
