Kissing and telling

2008-04-30 08:22

David Moseley

I was taking this one so seriously that on Sunday night I even wrote down a list of things I was going to mention today. Unfortunately I'd been at the Wellington Walk Cheese and Wine Festival all day and the rosé was just too good to turn down (the bobbing for ice blocks was also a particular highlight).

So when I had a look at my list this morning all I could make out was "washing machine", "not in the movies" and something about "no licking". I'm talking, of course, about kissing.

Kissing is fantastic, and I'm sure even the righteous and pious will agree that you won't go to hell just for planting one on the lips (little bit of tongue) before marriage. I haven't had a good kiss (of any kind) in ages, so I was obviously reminiscing about a few of the golden moments on Sunday night.

I wrote about my first kiss ages ago, and that will always remain a magic moment, but there have been some crackers since then - and a few shockers.

Goldfish

When I was at varsity I had a wee crush on my mate's digsmate. She was an "older girl" and seemed very sensible and unlikely to send any of her tongue action my way. As luck - and three bottles of Tassies - would have it, she did. I wish she hadn't.

In an instant the magic had melted. As I closed my eyes and moved in for the kill I think she took a frenzied goldfish and dropped it into my expectant mouth. It was like the thing was swimming away from a ravenous school of piranhas.

Not only did her tongue swim in all directions, but it also seemed intent on playing a sneaky game of hide and seek. You know those lizards you see, basking in the sun, then as soon as you get near they disappear down some impossibly small crack, only to dart back out again when curiosity gets the better of them?

Yup, that's how awesome that experience was. The lady in question had a boyfriend some time later. I can only imagine that she had worked on her technique. Or perhaps he just liked to hold hands.

On another boozy occasion I was coming back from a dinner when I got attacked in my car by a very gorgeous blonde girl. On a scale of terrifying to horrific, I would have to say that I was mildly terrified. Yet strangely aroused.

I soon found out that she did indeed kiss like an angel playing the harp, but on this inaugural incident she was obviously so overwhelmed in my presence that she tried to put her tongue in my mouth and out through my ear.

At the very least I think she may have found the lamb shank that I had for dinner.

Online 4/30/2008 9:20:02 AM
LOL, You just reminded me of those days. Good One David
G-zo 4/30/2008 9:26:45 AM
Damn, I couldn't stop laughing I wish you could have written more, eish! I think it?s important to master the art of using a tongue because no matter how good you look, if you can?t use your tongue it becomes a HUGE turn off.
Jurgs 4/30/2008 9:30:22 AM
Great stuff - Just what I needed. Have to agree with Rich. I was geared up for some serious reading. It's a welcome change...Enjoy the long weekend, maybe some of you unmarried guys can teach her a trick or two! For me, I'm off to a long weekend of Kiss - "no Tell"!
Chez 4/30/2008 9:32:42 AM
... was so horrific I think I'm still scarred. Kissed this guy - very awkward start as we both weren't sure what to do (very young) - and his tongue went absolutely mad and I ended up with spit all over my lower face ... Gross ...
Solar 4/30/2008 9:36:20 AM
I can remember kissing Bronwyn Johnson from New Year's Eve, right into the next year! And that's almost 20 years ago, so you can imagine it must've been some kiss to be so memorable...Seriously though, kissing is so amazing, wonder why it declines so determinedly when you've been married for a couple of years? I actually miss all those marathon kissing sessions...Not to mention if the lady in question uses Soft Lips lip balm...delicious!
Gary 4/30/2008 9:37:29 AM
Mos does it again - never fails to make us smile and gets readers interested without bringing up racial crap! Well done Mosely - mind the lamb shank, fish digests better and is more tasty.... ;-)
mikehunt 4/30/2008 9:47:50 AM
for the first time over 30yrs ago. Amazing - damn that girl could kiss!
Jakkie 4/30/2008 9:48:02 AM
Thanks for the laugh as always David. I had a huge crush on this girl since primary school. Got to kiss her for the first time at the age of 23 and it just killed it for me. Goldfish trying to escape piranhas is about the closest to what it felt like
True Blue SA 4/30/2008 9:48:20 AM
You sure have not got a life..........take a chill pill and maybe you will learn to smile/laugh a bit
Skippy 4/30/2008 10:03:45 AM
HA HA HA... we had those i guess, thanks for the comic relief for the weekend.
ebony 4/30/2008 10:14:14 AM
what a nice piece, just what i needed!i remember my first kiss, i was fourteen.i know it was late but anyway...the guy was standing there infront of me and when he started kissing me i just froze...i mean literally froze.i didnt know what to do.i had seen this on TV and thought it was easy but for some reason i just froze and could not even move my lips or tongue for that matter.i was very disapointed in myself.im now 25 and have mastered the art of kissing:) if i may say so myself.
Shaheer 4/30/2008 10:14:50 AM
I remember sitting in the library at RAU all those years ago, "studying" with Nico... a little teasing, then he moved in for the long-anticipated kiss... a minute later, I was drowning, wishing I'd worn a bib, and hoping my shoulders were broad enough to stop him swallowing me whole... Alas, the friendship wasn't strong enough to handle that! AND I failed the exam!
masingita 4/30/2008 10:19:25 AM
You are lucky they didn't bite you lips....my experiences were also horrible...Good one boet, you always know how to make me laugh
Rish 4/30/2008 10:22:52 AM
I've only kissed one person in my life and guess what...we are still together till this day. Its all in the kiss.
CJ 4/30/2008 10:30:25 AM
Sometimes it is worse to forget a kiss than to remember one. This weekend I accidentally kissed someone and then forgot what he looked like because the kiss was that good that I was abit all over the place afterwards. Ugh. PS - If you kiss blonde girls in parking lots you might end up with a bill at the end of the night;) Love your musings, Cj
Dave Robbins 4/30/2008 10:34:39 AM
of a Shelley Berman routine which went "Listen, has this ever happened to you? Just as you are about to kiss her, she decides to smile. On a cold night that is hell, brother - those teeth are like icecubes. Your tongue ends up stuck to them." Thanks for the laugh!
Werner 4/30/2008 10:35:46 AM
Sjoe is all i can say, Tassies! The expereince was so bad coz your tongue was too dry. That stuff can suck the soul out of you man.
masingita 4/30/2008 10:36:44 AM
Good for you dear, hold on to your angel, some of us are not that lucky. All the best to you
Odette 4/30/2008 10:36:51 AM
I had a similar experience. I dated a man who had believed in lots of tongue and lots of drool. I literally had to wipe my face dry afterwards...urghh!! Needless to say I avoided kissing him whenever I could. :-)
Lani 4/30/2008 10:51:35 AM
What a lovely column! It's such a pity sex always gets all te publicity - Tips on different positions, this and that. What I think is sorely needed is tips on sensual kissing! Remember back to the days when you were young... Before sex and where it felt the kissing never ends... Those were some great innocent times. (PS.: Not saying that I'd give up the nookie now!)
Zk 4/30/2008 10:58:42 AM
Have u ever thought that maybe u were the one who was a bad kisser not the other party, jus asking...
FS 4/30/2008 11:03:18 AM
WE KISSED AND THEN SHE TOLD HER HUSBAND ABOUT IT -BIG PROBLEMS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sunshine 4/30/2008 11:04:44 AM
Ha ha... great work Mos, well deserved piece of comic relief amidst all the seriousness that life brings. Reminds me of all the good -and bad kisses I've had. My first was rather ugly but since then I've tought a few boys how to win a girl over with a good kiss :-)
Anne 4/30/2008 11:29:43 AM
Ahhh, your article brings back many good (& not too many bad) memories. Definitely not a question one would ask a parent ;)
Win 4/30/2008 11:41:26 AM
I know the feeling, my first kiss, her name was Margaret, if there ever was an angel, she would be it.
Rodders 4/30/2008 11:46:37 AM
Hey David, great column once again - it really is good to have you back to your funniest once again!! I loved the goldfish/piranha analogy, but trust me, it could've been worse - I once kissed this girl (and we were both in our 20s, so she should've known better) and she simply stuck her tongue in my mouth and left it there, like a beached whale - truly horrific!!
Kissable 4/30/2008 11:46:49 AM
Great comic relief! I had my first kiss @ age 11... (shy) and I've been in practice ever since!Funny how a kiss can make or break hey!I was totally attracted to this one guy and anticipated the kiss... much to my dismay! However the guy I'm kissing now, much older, comes back 4more all the time! ;) all in the name of innocence...
mikey 4/30/2008 12:33:58 PM
at the constantia carnival during a Sweatband concert in 1986. Some girl called Zoe hooked up with me for the duration of the concert. I was 13 or 14, told her I was 16 she was probably the same age but also said she was 16. It must have been a pretty good kiss to still remember it so clearly after all these years. I will never forget it. She disapeared into the crowd after the concert and I never saw her again. Thanks Zoe you made my first kiss very memrorable.
nmb 4/30/2008 2:01:09 PM
my first kiss was a bit different than others'. It was so horrific that as soon as our lips locked the girl pushed me away so violently i landed 3 metres away on my backside
verushka 4/30/2008 2:18:59 PM
...with my mates twin brother. what an ABORTION, he turned out to be such a biter. Needless to say my lips were sore the next day.
