Don't fight with Terror

I know Mr Lekota prefers to go by the name Mosiuoa these days, which is very presentable on the international stage and all. But I've always been a fan of his struggle name, Terror.

Now a guy named Terror is obviously called "terror" for a reason. He was either a fearsome goal-scorer in the ANC Struggle First Soccer XI, or, like Batman, he's struck fear and terror into the hearts of the dissident and evil over the years in fighting the good fight. Or maybe Conrad already had The Horror trademarked.

Anyway, the point is, if a guy's name is Terror, surely you don't slag him off in the press, or call for his head or even say boo to his goose, just because he's criticised the ANC leadership.

I can only assume that a man whose name means "person or thing that inspires great dread" and is also a synonym for "fear", "shock", and "fright", knows how to handle himself in a bout of fisticuffs, and certainly in the dead of the night when no one is around to hear you whimper like a little stranded pussy cat.

I can also further assume that Messrs Vavi and Nzimande (apparently the two men in South Africa who know the most about leading the country, but aren't particularly savvy in getting their points across) know that the "Terror" moniker is purely a stage name for instilling fear into the hearts of suburban whiteys, and that Mr Lekota is not actually that adept with a blow torch and a pair of pliers.

If not, I'd be locking the door at night boys.

Terror aside, the disunity amongst the ANC, while naturally unsettling for all of you without British passports (jokes), is creating some rather vivid imagery, especially in terms of the ANC's canvassing to ensure a stranglehold on the country.

Apparently, according to at least one-and-half reputable newspapers, a group of "disaffected ANC members were lying in wait" for Jacob Zuma (he changed his plans, so missed the appointment) to make an appearance in East London.

    Perverse parody

Knowing the average ANC supporter's penchant for polite discourse when arguing a point, I'm not surprised JZ changed his plans. How exactly were these disaffected characters "lying in wait"? Were they hiding in the lush shrubbery at East London airport, ready to pelt the fearless leader with a chorus of boos, rotting veg and the words for a new song?

Better still... from the Argus, "key leaders were said to be fanning out across the country to explain the ANC's decision on Mbeki".

I can just picture the seen, ANC delegates with their keynotes tucked safely in their free ANC backpacks, swarming across the countryside, in a perverse parody of the Great Trek, with their green, gold and black flags, pins and baby-kissing techniques at the ready trying to persuade the fleeing hordes to stay, just a little bit longer.

Like door-to-door preachers (we always got Jehovah's Witnesses in my neighbourhood) asking if they can "speak to you about Jesus", I can imagine the ANC acolytes banging on doors asking for a moment of time to "speak to you about Thabo".

I'm terribly sorry but I don't have the time, where can I make the donation out to.

"No, no. We only want to explain the power the Jacob, and the glory of he ANC."

I'm sorry, I'm terribly busy. Would you like a piece of bread?

      What's your point...
    07/10/2008 11:51
I'm trying to understand the jist of this article but i can't.However i do feel that one has to make a comment on the recent outburst by the Terror man. I feel that as a South African and a member of the ANC Lekota has a right to question the system, so is everybody else. The only thing that he did wrong was to go to the media and spill his guts. The ANC has neccessary platforms to address these issues which i think terror should have put in good use. Failure to do so has made him a rebelious son. - Thokozani

      terror
    07/10/2008 11:56
Yes but what about the fact that the grass is greener on the other side and so on and such and such. Like people always say... just because Terror is spelt with 2 "r" it doensn't mean it's going to rain of Friday or Tuesday - sowat2

      Fighting Terror
    07/10/2008 12:03
Since the ANC is issuing terror alerts does that make "Terror" a terrorist? Sowat those are real pearls of wisdon, i agree with you 100% - deep1

      Funny you should mention this...
    07/10/2008 12:04
Perhaps not so funny if you will be on the receiving end, BUT, I recently wondered how long would be appropriate, before critics of Terror, & Mr Mbeki start going missing, or suffer from unexplained injuries or illness. You don't get to the top of your game by being a good boy all the time. These "youngstas" in politics, are not quite the "gangstas", who actually fought for freedom, their bag of tricks is not quite as full. - sarah

      The Terror Within
    07/10/2008 12:11
hehehe :-) although I must warn that names such as 'Terror' do not necessarily insinuate on the character's traits within black social circles. See when your name has a 'T' say Themba, Thabo, or even Pat (since Mr Lekota's second name is Patrick) - such people always wind up being called 'T' or 'Terra' or even 'Terror' (derived from Pat)... so fear not, unlock your doors and rest assured that we didnt concoct such nicknames to instill fear amongst the high-rise-fence-enclosed suburbia folks ;-) - U.M.K

In the name of Zuma, the holy ANC and the Tripartite alliance
    07/10/2008 12:17
The ANC is a religion with many followers. Here are some comparisons. 1. Supporter loyalty never changes irrespective of party performance. 2. When the church of the ANC is insulted, it is taken very personally and evokes a stinging reaction. 3. People pledge their lives for this organization. 4. People believe in them without ever seeing real action. 5. Followers go into dance and singing when their leader appears before them. 6. Supporters can be easily brainwashed. - Kal-El

      @Thokozani
    07/10/2008 12:19
"jist" is spelled with a g and the reason you can't find one is because it's not that kind of article. - Scotty

      yho !!!!!!
    07/10/2008 12:34
Fellow South Africans, I listend Julius Malema yesterday on Metro Fm. He is adamant that Zuma cabinet will rule this country come next year. To me it seems what Terror had no choice to spill the beans like that. Siya. P/E - siya

      Own Goal
    07/10/2008 12:35
Mr Lekota's more colourful moniker does indeed refer to his days as a football player. It's not as scary as it sounds. - La Duma!

      careful
    07/10/2008 12:42
i'm just trying to get my head around this whole issue, but i think the ANC should learn from any powerful organisations that came and went, that "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It will be a sad day when the ANC implodes and the whole nation fighting against each other. Be open to criticism and be careful. - sessio

      Tongue in cheek
    07/10/2008 12:45
Our neighborhood had a dog named Killer. The dog was a chihuahua. For Lekota, I think this name is a term of endearment...because he is quite the opposite to Terror. - DJ - DJ

      @Thokozani
    07/10/2008 12:47
It smells like you have "spilled your guts" with that little rant. Very good read indeed Sire. Just one word of advice, hang on to that piece of bread, you may just need it. - John Camp

      ... pointless
    07/10/2008 12:48
I'm surprised this has managed to be published. Poor grammar, typo's and no substance. Sorry David, but really.... - Nick

      Re: Terror - Sowat2
    07/10/2008 12:51
Hmmm... I've been thinking... If the grass is greener on the other side, you probably smoked it. Because, what you are saying makes no sense and is irrelevant. Get a spell checker and smoke less. - Thinker

      The Himself

He is one of the most fearful ANC of the time. The real one, with this ammetures he doesn't fit competision at all, never undermine what this heros have achived for all south Africans, we all need to respect and honour them. Stop making jokes, this is serious and very sad for this Giants. - Tibler

      Classic . .
    07/10/2008 12:52
Classic article Dave, I agree with Sarah - the old ANC guys have the hectic nicknames, but it's the young guys that have all the dirty tricks. He's probably just angry that he wasnt invited to the last ANC Youth League piss-up, there's nothing like discussing politics and the country's future over a crate of Castle Long Toms! - SR

      Consider this....
    07/10/2008 12:54
If Terror had to be part of another pol party he would have suffered under their code of conduct etc.etc.The piss-off is that you have an ex chairperson who in the past wud have hauled any other member before a DC.Now what code of conduct does he subscribe to?Also this campaign of his and cronies did not start with recall of Thabo,it started when they refusd to accept a democratic process within their own movement. There is no crisis,we want these people out. They r an embarrassment!!!!! - Cape Town Kid

The one who pulls the branch of the tree
    07/10/2008 13:07
aka troublemaker. Thats what Rolihlahla means. As in Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. So for the apartheid government he was a troublemaker. ANYWAY, you need a very specific personality to be a politicians. "Nice" and placid will not get you were Mr Terror now is. Another thing: I heard Zuma being refered to as Kangaman? Can anyone PLEASE tell me what that means? - HT

      er actually,
    07/10/2008 13:18
Sarah is on the side of the "old ANC guys" - Much as I can be at any rate. Having reached a certain age where I have accumuated a wealth? of knowlege, I turn rather mean minded when given uphill by a bunch of whiny juniors. Will however consider discussing the merits of my argument over a case of long toms though... ;) - sarah

      Terror
    07/10/2008 13:27
David, maybe Terror was given this name because of the terror that white people used to instill in black people way back then before their wings were clipped!!Terror that if they opposed the government they would be jailed and would never see their families again - How Steve Biko died-ring a bell? You might hide behind humour, but your article is still racist and definately not funny, only funny to a certain race in this country!! - Mpho

      Terror...
    07/10/2008 13:28
I have always been a fan of Terror Lekota. When he was Premier of the Free State he was accused of helping white farmers! Terror for Prez!! - Pietbril

      Oh .........PLEASE!
    07/10/2008 13:31
Oh THOKOZANI /TIKOLOSHI- what utter rubbish! You sound just like big-tongue malema, your leader!!! - Mpho

      Bril!!
    07/10/2008 13:59
'while naturally unsettling for all of you without British passports (jokes)'. Love it, so funny!! Am in London with a bunch of those. Can't wait to come home!! - Kay

      ... really pointless
    07/10/2008 14:01

I really enjoyed the last three paragraphs, absolutely brilliant! - Brilliant!

      Terror
    07/10/2008 14:17
Just to clarify, Mr Lekota received his nickname as a prolific young striker. Apparently ha caused TERROR to the opposition. I get the funny side of the story though. - bhunu

      @ Mpho
    07/10/2008 14:57
Ag no man... dont be so sensitive. - PP

      The point is
    07/10/2008 15:01
That the columnist is basically equating the ANC with Jehovah's witnesses and how they want you to bask in the glory ect, but mean while all they want to do is crush any and all opposition to their rule, which quiet frankly is robust tyranny for you er I mean democracy at work - Dr Spank

      the race card
    07/10/2008 15:06
Why is it that whenever a black person doesn't like something, even when that 'somthing' is written by a black person - they pull out the race card! Mpho - get real, you sound like a teenager with nothing better to comment... - richard

      @Mpho
    07/10/2008 15:11
I thought you'd like to know that criticising someone who is black isn't automatically racist anymore. See, honey, everyone else has moved on in the last 15 years and has grown up a little. You should get out more. Really. - JBK

      @ Cape Town Kid
    07/10/2008 15:25
I see that those people who are an embarrassment, who you want out, are being asked to canvass for votes for the next election. No crisis? It seems that you and the Zuma camp knows that if they form a new party the ANC chances of winning would be 50/50 otherwise why would you want the embarrassing dissadents to canvass for you? - Donovan D

      Lekota`s PR.....
    07/10/2008 15:31
...If that is what you hope to become in future, Then you are doing a GREAT job!!! I`M Worried though because you are beginning to sound like Terror... Lots and Lots of Words with little meaning,if none at all!! - zolani sixolo
