David Moseley

Some interesting news from the UK's respected Daily Mail (news of such magnitude and significance that I can't believe it wasn't picked up by etv's 24-hours news channel): Last week the British paper finally published what we all know to be true - more people believe in aliens (not illegal ones, mind you) than they do in God.

The highly reputable newspaper wrote that, "Researchers found that while 54% of us are convinced the Almighty exists, 58% believe in the supernatural." Ha. I knew it. The Mail went on, "nearly a quarter of the 3 000 surveyed claimed they had had a paranormal encounter. Some 37% said aliens and ghosts were the basis of their belief system."

I can tell you why this is so. God and his benevolent son, for some obscure reason, have never appeared in a believable enough movie; while creatures from outer space and the supernatural have cornered the market in cinematic realism.

God vs Aliens (hey, not a bad idea for a sequel if Sigourney Weaver is up for washing away the distaste of Alien Resurrection. The Weyland-Yutani Corporation can send Ripley into space to see if God does exist, only to find out that the evil Predators, now controlled by an army of Terminators, have been brainwashing the masses through iPods into believing that a hamburger-eating clown is the King of the World. It's a long story). God meanwhile has long since moved on to Mars where, along with Nasa, he's trying to get water out of the frozen ice-caps to start it all over again.

Anyway, decide for yourself if these are believable. If it happens in the movies, it must be real, surely:

God movies:

Bruce Almighty: God, playing the benevolent Morgan Freeman, allows a manic Jim Carrey to increase his wife's boob size. Believability: 1/10. There's no way Morgan can get out of helping Andy Dufresne at Shawshank? and then still help Jim in time to restore his marriage and career.

The Passion of the Christ: Dude walks around with a cross on his back. Haters throw rocks at him. Believability: Okay, this one gets 9/10. But only because it sounds like your average Congress of the People meeting.

The DaVinci Code: Forrest Gump carries on running, this time in the Vatican and with bad hair, while angry monks try to kill him. Believability: 2/10. Impossible, Tom Hanks is the nicest man in movies. Even a vengeful God who hated Turner & Hooch would never take out his wrath on Tom.

Alien movies:

Alien franchise: Hot, lithe angry woman kicks alien butt while men get haplessly devoured by drooling alien. Also, baby alien pops out of chest. Believability: 9/10. Angry woman? Check. Big guns? Check. Evil corporation concealing the truth to advance grim capitalist needs at any and all cost. Check. Happens all the time. Sounds just like the credit crunch, just with more spaceships.

ET: Congenial, misunderstood alien kid wanders around town performing pleasing tricks for his band of followers, while evil persecutors hunt him down because they don't understand him, when all he really wants to do his go home. To his dad. In the sky. Hang on, this sounds awfully familiar? Believability: 9/10.

yet another great article, love the sarcasm... and them damn playa haters
Ian 12/2/2008 11:54:25 AM
One day, you too will have to face the "Dude with a cross on his back" HE will remind you of your portrayal of HIM today. This type of writing is just to be controversial and will no doubt lead to a desired number of responses. To be frank even your "Hot S^%$t in the sack" comments of past when referring to your 'claimed' abilities is better scribbling than the above.
Raymond Hocknell 12/2/2008 11:57:15 AM
Yes David. Very funny. Thanks for that.....But, seriously, they are all just stories and technology is just making it easier to believe the movies.
Crimson 12/2/2008 11:57:37 AM
Nice article bro, prepare to be swamped by all the religious fanatics on this site. I think religious apsects as a whole tend to be boring while the fact that aliens could exist (I believe there could be other matter but Aliens as in movies? doubt it) is a very exciting prospect. Hence its like comparing Chess to rugby, no one is goint to crack open a beer on a saturday arvie to watch a chess match on tellie, I believe chess at the top level is more demanding though. Just a thought.
nthatuwa 12/2/2008 12:00:52 PM
who's to blame for this huge support for Zuma,LOL, SABC?Yes.the media does play a huge role in influencing us.It can be used for good or for bad.Is this what Malema was saying,or was he saying SABc should broadcast what the ANC wants?LMFAO.TV tries to explain the complex in mysterious things, like how our forefathers did with tales, fibles, etc,to explain why animals look & do things the way they do,etc.
Julia 12/2/2008 12:05:01 PM
Fantastic David! I definitely believe in aliens more than God. Nice article:)
Simon 12/2/2008 12:07:48 PM
Supernatural does not equal aliens. If that was the case, it would be plausible. The existence of aliens to me is more plausible than a god. But in the survey it cites supernatural... I'm surprised since that could easily be the case since believing in a god and the supernatural requires the same leap of faith. :)
nthatuwa 12/2/2008 12:11:18 PM
Why have you chosen those scenes with regard to God,surely you did watch those movies to be able to choose better scenes.Come on,are you trying to convince us that you believe in aliens and not God because the Media has managed to convince you so and God has done nothing to help us be convinced of His existance?God works in mysterious ways.Ways that the natural man cannot discern. You need a lot more to comprehend this one,not just logic my friend. One day,it shall be revealed and you will know!
Brahmaan 12/2/2008 12:18:10 PM
wanne see the responses from the readers...sit back and enjoy the show !
andré 12/2/2008 12:25:54 PM
As a Christian, which I'm not ashamed of, that you refer to Jesus as a "Dude". The difference is that Jesus came in the flesh to the earth to die for me and you over 2000 years ago and has proven Himself which is documented and does not have to appear in a movie. This same "Dude" that you refer you is coming back and whether you like it or not, you are going to bow your knee to Him and everyone else. Remember, God is not mocked and there is consequences. Accept Jesus and see the difference.
luc 12/2/2008 12:45:18 PM
Hello Golden Boy! I haven't read it yet, but do you think THEY will like it?
brendon 12/2/2008 12:48:48 PM
David Moseley you are rather flippant when you refere to God and his son Jesus Christ. I ask you a questrion, are you so flippant about your own life in the here after?
Scotty 12/2/2008 12:55:11 PM
Some of the comments from my fellow readers has me finally convinced that most South Africans have had their sense of humour surgically removed! Nthatuwa and Ian: chill out, cheer up and have a bloody chuckle why don't you!!
CTheB 12/2/2008 12:56:00 PM
Any God is supernatural, so the 54% saying they believe in God must be included in the 58% that say they believe in the supernatural. Aliens, on the other hand, are not supernatural. And The Last Temptation of Christ is a pretty good movie :-)
Slanesh 12/2/2008 12:57:01 PM
Belief in Aliens or God are personal points of view based on our culture, hopes, fears ect. If you believe in something it does not mean it is true, in order for a belief to be true it has evidence to back up that belief.
HAHA 12/2/2008 12:57:42 PM
Believe in what or who? How about human kind because we are it, there is no super this or super that .... Anyone believe in Father Xmass ..... ??? Might as well. Good article David xxx
Agnostic 12/2/2008 12:59:19 PM
To think, 54% of people living in Britain believe there's an invisible man in the sky. He created everything, but can't seem to manage money. He always needs money!
Win 12/2/2008 12:59:51 PM
And we got Jacob Zuma....mind you, his inhouse of politicians are comparing him to Jesus Christ! Go figure bunch of dumbasses!!!!
chops 12/2/2008 1:00:25 PM
David I hope journalism isn't your full-time job because you really suck at it. Even so I must admit I agree with the sentiment that Hollywood influences people's value and belief systems. The lack of morality, respect and decency is advocated by most Hollywood movies. Kids see, kids do. Simple as that.
Win 12/2/2008 1:00:47 PM
And we got Jacob Zuma....mind you, his inhouse of politicians are comparing him to Jesus Christ! Go figure bunch of dumbasses!!!!

Havnt you seen Bruce Almighty & Evan Almighty - God was there in Black & White!
Werner 12/2/2008 1:05:35 PM
I enjoyed ur column, but using "dude ... with a cross..." to describe Jesus is going a bit far, me thinks.
Luc 12/2/2008 1:06:16 PM
Aaaaah. The Goooolden One is sure they will like it, for THEY like everything he does, especially his braaied chicken. The Goooolden One feels no pressure to perform when the chicken is roasting.
The Golden One 12/2/2008 1:07:28 PM
Oops, the Golden One is indeed an idiot, signing his name Luc. What a tool i am.
ALL MAN 12/2/2008 1:07:39 PM
Aliens are way more believable than God, mysterious ways, yeah right, how about no ways at all. The only piece of proof Christians have is a book written by some 'dudes' a very long time ago. Maybe if in a few thousand years all the books get destroyed and the only remaining book on earth is Peter Pan people will worship him, that would rock at least he can fly not only walk on water.
AJ 12/2/2008 1:08:20 PM
Well done David!
Pieter 12/2/2008 1:09:29 PM
This 'dude' that your talking about is Jesus. God's son. Show some respect! God is not mocked and for your sake I hope God will show mercy on you on judgement day.
slanesh 12/2/2008 1:10:47 PM
There is no documented evidence of Jesus existance other than the Bible. Please dont quote the Bible as reference to the existance of Jesus it is not undenaible proof. No one has the slightest physical evidence to support a historical Jesus; no artifacts, dwelling, works of carpentry, or self-written manuscripts. All claims about Jesus derive from writings of other people written long after the time of his supposed death.
Mike 12/2/2008 1:11:29 PM
God and NASA on Mars for the same reason, giggled like a schoolgirl for 5 minutes, that just made my week........

M.B. 12/2/2008 1:12:51 PM
HA hahha... brilliant article! I haven't laughed at one of your articles for a loooong time. The only scary thing is that you recognise with ET.. mm...
Rodders 12/2/2008 1:13:07 PM
I love reading comments from those people who have clearly had a seriously Puritan upbringing (you know -- we'd better not have any fun, cause there might be some kind of sin involved in that!). You people who go on about 'God shall not be mocked' obviously know more about how God thinks than the rest of us -- personally, I think even God has a sense of humour (look at the Platypus for proof!!!) and I reckon He's laughing His ass off with the rest of us at David's column -- well written, Dave!!
Dave the wave 12/2/2008 1:13:09 PM
"..there ARE consequences." ARE. Don't do the bowing of knee thing bro. Unless I get knighted. Which would be awesome.
Morne Ferreira 12/2/2008 1:18:49 PM
David, do you enjoy mocking the Saviour of millions and misusing His name just to be in the spotlight? My friend I pray that your eyes will be opened one day ... before it's too late for you.
Donovan 12/2/2008 1:23:41 PM
Hey Moseley, careful my son. The Dude is in fact The Big Lebowski, and you will have to bend your knee to Him when He returns to Earth. From a Spaceship.
chops 12/2/2008 1:25:41 PM
lol @ your ignorance bru. There's more documented proof that Jesus lived than there is that Napoleon lived. It's not just the bible. Get an education. Even atheists believe and accept that Jesus lived - just not that he is the Son of God.
bg 12/2/2008 1:26:27 PM
honestly people - have none of you heard of 'irony'? the tone of this article reflects it's subject matter... come on...
Jerry Mr Le Roux 12/2/2008 1:30:33 PM
I feel sorry for you David with such a bizarre outlook in life I can only prey for you
Max 12/2/2008 1:32:30 PM
I realise you write this sort of tripe to draw responses, but I find it sadly disappointing that News24, week after week, gives you a little spot to set up your soap box. If you were a true writer you'd be able to create interest in your work without having to resort to belittling the belief systems of others. I guess those that can, write. Those that can't, blog.
Sibolele Mfonunku 12/2/2008 1:33:18 PM

Valiant 12/2/2008 1:40:37 PM
why we Christians get so angry about articles like this. It's actually a bargain to see how many ppl havent been saved yet.It only shows that we as Christians still have allot of work to do and allot op ppl to pray for.So what if there is aliens, they get to see universe that GOD created from close up and they cannot stop me from attaining eternal life through Jesus Christ.
johnson 12/2/2008 1:40:49 PM
You poor misguided fool! But, I have to admit it, you remind me of the old me. Then something SUPERNATURAL happened and I had to eat my words. And the things I have seen since I have open my mind, quite unbelievable. But hey, until you are tired of carrying that load, you will be who you will be, but boy, are you missing out. And you are not going to find inside a church but inside your soul.
Slanesh 12/2/2008 1:43:07 PM
Please enlighten me to this proof just because you say there is does not create this evidence. The Bible is not proof so please dont list chapter and verse. These also dont qualify as they have been sufficiently discredited as good sources. Josephus Flavius, a Jewish historian Pliny the Younger, a Roman official Tacitus, a Roman historian Suetonius, a Roman historian The Talmud
Donovan 12/2/2008 1:45:41 PM
Hey Moseley, careful my son. The Dude is in fact The Big Lebowski, and you will have to bend your knee to Him when He returns to Earth. From a Spaceship.

"I can only prey for you"?! The True Believers falling over their own fingers in a rush to tell Dave how quickly he's going to hell, and in what colour handbasket
Warren 12/2/2008 2:03:50 PM
Umm...in fact very few athiests believe there was a specific man called Jesus of whom the Bible speaks. Slanesh is right - outside the Bible there is 0 proof that Jesus ever existed - the two extra-biblical references are interpolations by later writers. Just because its in a book doesn't mean its true - xtianity is Paul's creation - he did a good job fooling people for 2000 years - less and less believe though and soon the game will be up.
KM 12/2/2008 2:04:24 PM
Hey Chops, you're right to a point, there is more proof of Christ's existence than Napoleon living but as much documented historical proof of His death, resurection and being taken up to heaven. Why you think he was around for so long after His resurection? Slanesh has a serious lack of education, sounds like Zuma's followers.
Warren 12/2/2008 2:08:46 PM
Do you honestly expect any intelligent person to believe what the Bible says happened when every single other historian is silent. For example, supposedly when Jesus died on the cross, the sky went black and the DEAD ROSE AND WALKED AMONG THE LIVING! Huh? That would be an extremely important and relevant (not to mention disgusting and scary) event. And not one historian, not even one wrote about it. Yet they busied themselves writing about the thickness of city walls. Please! pull the other one.
Gayle 12/2/2008 2:09:13 PM
God may forgive you this blasphemy but you kinda have to ask for forgiveness - get the feeling you won't (just a hunch) - so look forward to your just deserts - you'll get them allright - and who'll be laughing then??! truth is no-one, certainly not you, not me either - its sad that you don't believe in God
Gregg 12/2/2008 2:10:31 PM
No documented proof? I love it...perhaps before speaking in ignorance about this topic you should do some (scholarly) homework...there is more than plenty documented proof...but I suspect, as Nietzsche said, "it is our preferences that choose against christianity, not arguments"...
Henry 12/2/2008 2:12:40 PM
I just love sitting back with a cup of coffee and read the repsonses from every Tom, Dick and Fanny that feels wronged by anyone with an opinion different to their own. Loved your column Dave!!! I'm sure the dude is smiling at your parody as wel!
Ra 12/2/2008 2:23:03 PM
Religion = let's get all the sheep to do the same thing. It is amazing how all religions try and impose their believes on everybody else. Does anybody have a sense of humour left in this country?
Dan the Man 12/2/2008 2:26:27 PM
Sup dude, Your articles are awesome. I love the tone and figures of speech you use. Some people just have too much time on their hands and such a strong belief system, that everything that happens around them is an immediate attack on them. "CHILL OUT SOUTH AFRICA" Global warming is obviously getting to you people. "Idiot Gosh" Don't take things too seriously, walk through life with a smile on your mug and be happy. F**k what everyone else thinks, as long as you know whats right. - Peace Brother
Jeff Fensham 12/2/2008 2:26:48 PM
Hey David, what do you expect from the poms - they are all a blody bunch of "aliens" JF
Slanesh 12/2/2008 2:32:44 PM
Still waiting for this proof, remember during the times of the Romans they kept records of events in there provinces, there is no historical record of any of the events described in the bible not even of the Crucifiction and they did keep records of who was crucified and for what.
Huuyga 12/2/2008 2:33:36 PM
I value peoples opinions when they give them in truth, but when people merely make statements to draw reactions from others I get seriously pissed off. It's that kind of mentality and the seemingly oblivious sentiment towards others that break down the moral fibre in our normal everyday lives. If you cannot even respect someone else enough to simply leave them and their beliefs alone then you are not worthy of respect yourself.
Dan the Man 12/2/2008 2:33:43 PM
The majority of you have no clue WTF is going on in this article. Look at it this way: Think of the T.V. show Gummi Bears Do you think the Gummi Bears would give 5 cents of their time, if those evil rhyno people said their gummi juice is nothing compared to Energade? No, because they know what the truth is. So stop complaining when you don't even understand the article. It's no wonder SA is in a loophole. Look at yourselves. Take everything with a pinch of salt and Bicarbonate of soda. :-P
Ryan Matthews 12/2/2008 2:43:14 PM
both Christians and Alien Watchers have so much in common. But if "god" is from the heavens, surely he would be an alien too? What if our entire solar system sits inside the snow-globe of some prepubescent three-legged alien monster with one eye and fangs? David... you have opened up a philosophical can of words you naughty naughty atheist you.
Slanesh 12/2/2008 2:45:25 PM
Hmmm you know me do you, well lets see no where did I say what I believed in now did I. All I pointed out is the belief that most people have that can not be questioned can be questioned and should be questioned to many things in this world are taken as fact yet have no real proof backing them up, Christians take the birth life and death of Jesus as fact yet how many of them really investigate the evidence.
Slanesh 12/2/2008 2:45:49 PM

I heard a preacher says something thatt I think is true. He said, 'if man did not fall into sin and loose his glory, there would be no need to be serious'. What necessitates people to be serious is struggle and lack comfort. God has a sense of humour and I don't think He is angry at the article.
The Dude 12/2/2008 2:49:16 PM

Dave, as always fantastic! Though I'm finding myself, when reading your articles, more and more wanting to read the responses! Why are there so many HillBillys out there ... (and why do they keep reading your columns even though they know your point of view!? Surely their God is going to take exception to this and smite them from up high with the mighty sword - for they know it is wrong and still they persist! =:-O
Watcher 12/2/2008 3:02:28 PM
Jesus was hang on a stake not a cross check Jewish and Roman history. The sky went dark as in overcast. The dead were not raised, tombs split open and the corpses were seen in the city. Read the accounts carefully. As for a historian try Josephus. Additionally the bible more than sufficiently fills the requirements to be history. Times, dates and names. As for the article I get the point, some believe what ever is on TV without checking
Mark 12/2/2008 3:08:21 PM
Slanesh, youre ill-informed rants do not qualify as an excuse, perhaps if you knew anything about history you will know that there is more eyewitness, historical, archeological and written proof of Jesus Christ then ANY other person of antiquity! Pls get your facts right before posting a comment, by the way is our calendar based upon a non-existent man!? ha ha ha ha.
nthatuwa 12/2/2008 3:10:00 PM
I bet you laugh @ every fly that flies around you.I have an amazing sense of humour & you know what,I also know where to draw the line.Something you clearly know nothing about.A man without principles & morals.I wont apologize or try to justify my comments. What I've said,I've said & will not retract cause you think I lack humour.& this,is called integrity, know what that is?
mom 12/2/2008 3:27:28 PM
Wow, have you stirred up a hornet's nest, you know what my feelings on the subject of Christianity are, but I think your article is brilliant and as Rodders said, I reckon God will be up in heaven laughing his head off, after all he has a great sense of humour, if he didn't he would never have created man
Mo 12/2/2008 4:11:16 PM
The word dude does not refer to a camel's testicles, it was originally used to refer to a city dwelling man who was unused to being outside of the city. Perhaps the word you were looking for is dork, slang used to refer to a penis. Try a dictionery before you spurt useless drivel like that.
Louwey 12/2/2008 4:14:08 PM
