David Moseley

Love is strange. You get a bit silly when you're in love. And in turn, love makes you a little strange. Love makes you consider packing in your nine-month old business and giving it all up for a woman you've known just as long.

Love drags you impetuously overseas and insists that you have the time of your life. It also leaves you shattered when the moment ends.

I like the saying "what you miss on the swings you get on the round-a-bouts". Love is the perpetual act of falling off the round-a-bout and getting whacked by the swing on the way down. It's great while you're spinning around. But when you fall off? Look out.

I'm between both at the moment. I fell off the round-a-bout and the swing just won't stop hitting me.

I'm heart-achingly in love with a girl in another country. I love the way she smiles at me. Her cheeks push her entire face up and her eyes disappear behind a giant grinning flash of white teeth. She looks like a Sharpei puppy that's just sneezed.

I love the way she talks to me with her endearing mumble. She has this amazing hair. If I play with it for long enough I can make more shapes than a kid with 4 000 Lego pieces.

I get warm and fuzzy from the pulse that charges through my body every time I get into bed with her. It's electrifying.

Willing to risk it

From the moment I met her it's been an edgy, passionate dance, like flames licking at the wood in an incandescent fireplace, flirting with each other, burning higher and brighter, back and forth, reaching a fiery peak and then settling down into a bed of scorching coals.

I believe I'm meant to spend a lot of time with this girl. I believe this despite the fact she'll be out of the country for most of the next year. Love is strange.

I've felt the worst heartache of my life in the last few weeks. Despondent cannot begin to describe the black mood that sits on my shoulders. But I'm learning a lot about fighting for what you want. Let's be honest. A relationship is hard enough when you're both in the same city. But different continents? Not ideal.

People ask "how do you expect to maintain it". I have no idea. I counter the question in my own head with a "if you know you've met the right person, aren't they worth fighting for".

Throughout your life you'll always get what you want, if you're prepared to work for it. If I want this I'll get it. I might be making a mistake of atomic proportions.

When the bomb drops I might be flayed to the bone in a matter of seconds. But I'm willing to find out. Love is risky.

If you're not prepared to lose it all, you'll never have it all.

I was in the same boat. It was truly an uphill battle just to see each other. Then we'd be on a high for a few days and come crashing down to earth again! Torture I tell you.. But hang in there ;) True love is worth fighting for. We're married with a baby on the way. What more could a man want?? - Ralph

  Pounds shillings and pence

My story is the same one - almost - except for the sharpei puppy, the lego pieces and a few other tiny details. A footnote to such a romantic life is, of course, the costs of maintaining the relationship. It is sending me straight into financial ruin - almost. But its still worth it - definitely. - Jaco

  hope it works

I can appreciate what you are going through as my wife of 21 years is in Durban while I am working in London. It is not easy but as long as your love is strong enough, it can be overcome. I will be seeing my wife next week for the first time in over 5 months and I can't wait. Hope everything works out for you both. You are not alone. - John

David, I don't know what you are going to go through, I have never had a long distance relationship, but I know the feelings you are talking about. I hope it all works out for you. In life, it's better to regret the things you did do, rather than the things you didn't. - Rikki

19/06/2007 12:42
Hey D. Well, my partner is in Jhb and i am in Harare (met him while i was on sabatical in Dbn for 8 months). We going on almost a year now...and i hear what you say "If you're not prepared to lose it all, you'll never have it all.". We hoping to eventually be in the same country, then progress to the same city. I have to sometimes remind myself of the "long-term" plan! Good luck. B - Zimboza
