Georgina Guedes

There are a few companies and products that I am fairly loyal to. I like Alpen muesli (although they don't have a wheat-free version), I use Sensodyne toothpaste, I like driving Toyotas and wherever possible, I will fly with Kulula.com.

I just feel that Kulula has got it right. They communicate simply and with a sense of humour, but this is backed up with a high level of professionalism, from the efficiency of the website and the call centre staff to the check-in staff and the people who look after you when you're on the plane.

It was brave of them to choose such an informal approach to their customer interface. I wonder if there were boardroom discussions about whether passengers would be scared away from something as risky as flying is perceived to be by a slightly whacky approach to service. People will buy a Nando's burger because of humorous marketing, but will they buy a plane ticket?

Well, they went with it, and they seem to be doing well, if their new fleet is anything to go by.

Incidentally, Nando's is the only other brand I can think of that tries to convey such a sense of humour rather than uptight seriousness in its product offering (don't even mention that ridiculous Meerkat - seriously). Unfortunately, while they do represent a well-perceived brand, the humour isn't necessarily backed up by brilliant service at their stores.

Flying down to Cape Town

I am digressing. Back to Kulula. I didn't even examine the prices offered by other airlines down to Cape Town when I flew down there last week. Kulula got my dollar. And after brilliant service offered even by a temporary Czech crew (Kulula are borrowing Czech planes while they ready their new fleet), I arrived in Cape Town with a spring in my step.

My step got decidedly less springy over the course of the weekend, as I encountered shoddy service in situations where I was trying to provide stroppy and surly people with my custom. I was made to feel like a brash American waggling a bundle of dollars in the faces of diffident foreigners, trying to get someone, anyone to crack a smile.

A love of clutter

One situation requires a little explaining. My grandfather is a fairly well-known architect and artist. His house has paintings - cross my heart, I kid you not - on the ceiling! Sculptures are piled on the floor next to teetering stacks of books and countless other things. It's interesting, but it's chaos.

As a reaction to the clutter she was brought up in, my mother is all about minimalism and clean whiteness. As a reaction to the house I was brought up in, I like colour and variety. Heaven knows what my children will do.

So, I have been trying to compile a dinner service of mismatched antique plates. The going is slow, but I have some pieces I really like. But, while I was walking around a market in Cape Town, I encountered a porcelain painter, who had a variety of different plates on display.

I mentioned to her that I might be interested in buying "a set". She looked at me as if I had crawled out from under a rock, and explained that each plate is individually painted and fired, and she doesn't sell sets.

I tried again. I explained that by "a set", what I meant was that I wanted to buy more than one - twelve maybe - but that I didn't mind if they were all different, in fact, that was why I approached her in the first place. She sighed and explained that a lot of work went into making plates and she could only fire four a week.

Given that buying "a set" of plates would require a Cape Town friend to visit her shop and act as an interface, in which case she would need to be helpful rather than acting as if the offer to make a big purchase was a burden on her, I have decided to continue with my plan to buy antique plates, and leave her alone.

What's wrong with people?

A couple of other wangles punctuated my weekend, including a coffee shop owner who was reluctant to let me use the advertised wireless internet access because "people download music and order ten glasses of water", when I had said I would be ordering breakfast and only wanted to check my e-mail.

After two days in a quirky city with great food, good views, nice weather and a mountain, I was very happy to make my way back to Johannesburg, with its crap weather, rampant crime, muggy pollution and people who crack a smile when you talk to them.

      Funny...isn't it?
    29/05/2008 13:41
Even the estate agents are like that. They make you believe that they are doing you a huge favour when selling your property. Funny, given the number of agencies that will close down with all these interest rate hikes... - Jan

    29/05/2008 13:49
Welcome to the CT....All I say is please write something that we actually care about........And you can stay in Jozi with all the crap that comes with....hey come summer time due you want to go to the beach, oh wait sorry you live in hell on the east reand, well there is aleays haartebees for you to frolick in...you silly lady you judging CT by some old lay who paints plates and sells them at a market, no wonder she is bitter....Oh and the free internet thing is a myth - nothing is free - bob

      Too much attitude in CT
    29/05/2008 13:50
Agreed. CT is a beautiful place, too bad the locals have so much attitude. - Nobby

      Canal Walk
    29/05/2008 13:52
Hopefully you didn't venture into Canal Walk during your stay in the Mother City. Quite a few of the attendants in the shops there are rude and unfriendly. - Zee

The last line gives it away...
    29/05/2008 14:05
"I was very happy to make my way back to Johannesburg, with its crap weather, rampant crime, muggy pollution and people who crack a smile when you talk to them." What are you smoking, girl?? My experience of Joburg is: if someone cracks a smile at you, that's not because they're friendly, but because they're laughing at you, with that typical snotty attitude. (And no, I'm not a Capetonian.) - Mark R.

      Spot on!
    29/05/2008 14:07
You're very right Georgina. After moving to beautiful CT from big and bad JHB it didn't take long before I was disillusioned. We often joke about how it seems CT people don't actually WANT your money. From lazy waitresses (it's hardly a difficult job) to surly salesmen I actually long for the friendliness of Jhb!! - JoJo

      Cr*ppy CT service
    29/05/2008 14:08
I'm with you on this one, and I'm surprised that you are surprised about it .... - Andrew

      Cape Town
    29/05/2008 14:10
Sheesh, Jozi must have changed since I lived there. I don't remember any smiles, just grim-faced yuppies in hectic pursuit of wealth and hordes of nouveau riche plebs trying to impress with their latest material acquisition. Cape Townians have a gentler approach to life. Sometimes this makes service a bit slow ... ;-) - angie

I thought it was just me...
    29/05/2008 14:11
... but Cape Town really sucks when it comes to service, everybody seems they have somewhere better to be but have to serve there time in perguatry. - Francois

Want service with a smile - then pay me more!
    29/05/2008 14:11
Not reffering to the examples you give in the column, but why is it that people allways expect service with a smile? Its not like the poorly paid employees sitting behind tills are the ones who actually gets to pocket the money. Besides, your not actually paying for their smile, your paying for the product your buying. If you want them to smile at you, give them a reason to. - T

      Service
    29/05/2008 14:14
The trouble with Cape Town people is that they take themselves far too seriously. Agree with you about Kulula although they should teach the people who read the quirky onboard instructions to try to sound more natural and not as if its a tune - sometimes you don't have a clue what they're saying. - Traveler

      I disagree
    29/05/2008 14:16
I am one of the unfortunate people who has to work in Mpumalanga and Gauteng area. Here people turn to their friend and continue conversation when a customer is in front of them. I have never seen that in the Western Cape, Cape Town especially. Plus 1time is much better than Kulula. - Capie

South Africans are simply too cheap
    29/05/2008 14:23
I for one agree with the poor coffee shop owner. South Africans believe they they are entitled to get everything for nothing, and I mean all South Africans. We can walk through any shopping center in SA, and you believe that squeaky sounds are the shoes on a floor, no it isn't - South Africans are so TIGHT, what you are hearing is their b*tt cheeks rubbing against each other as they walk. - TheOne

      Service with a frown
    29/05/2008 14:26
Have you picked up when you drive on a busy street in Gauteng and switch on your flicker to change lanes, the Gauteng registrations see that as "please pass me". The CT registrations see that as "please come drive next to me and keep your nose up in the air and see nothing" - Grazy

      Its not only here
    29/05/2008 14:26
having lived in CT and Joburg, this article is spot on. Watching waiters at primi piatti on the waterfront was hilarious. Anyway, In Brazil, the exact same attitude defines Rio and Sao Paolo: Rio (beautiful and lazy), SP ugly and fast - dee

      I agree
    29/05/2008 14:28
I've found that having to wait two hours for food at the franchise restaurant annex at Sun International Newlands on mutliple occasions seems to be normal. When I decided to enquire about possible service issues, the restaurant manager was so dismissive and rude, I actually laughed. It was pathetic. They do seem to think they're the cats whiskers down there. Heaven alone knows how such incapable and useless people can think so much of themselves. - Smaakstad

      CAPE TOWN

I agree with you about Kulula - great airline ! - Charmaine

      Shame
    29/05/2008 14:32
Trying to justify your crap life in Joburg by slagging off CT service?? Whatever. We all know what a hole Joburg is. After shopping malls, it has nothing but crime and arrogant yuppies. There's a reason why CT is one of the top tourist destinations in the world and yet Joburg doesn't feature. If you think Joburg is great, you really haven't lived. - Whatever

      ?
    29/05/2008 14:32
Why does everybody on the buying part of the transaction always think that they are right? If somebody doesn't want to deal with you have the good sense to just walk away intead of standing there whining. The fact that every second person approached seems to be useless tells me lot about who is really at fault. - veritas

      shame
    29/05/2008 14:38
Wow, what an incredibly dumb article. Basing your judgement of CPT service on a person working on the street and a coffee shop. Granted, service in South Africa as a whole is not that good, and perhaps service in CPT isn't that great, but surely you can find more valid examples to base your argument on. CPT are not like Joburg people, otherwise it would be called Joburg. Maybe you should try going to France, because I can guarantee you that you will find the people there even less "friendly". - Chris Louw

      Service with a frown ?
    29/05/2008 14:43
It is unfortunate that you had a bad experience in Cape Town. It is a beautiful city and 'most' of its people are actually quite pleasant. You know the saying 'Different Strokes For Different Folks'....if you prefer crap weather, rampant crime and muggy pollution then Cape Town is most definitely not the destination for you. - Cpt resident

      Smiles
    29/05/2008 14:45
Smiles come from inside, they show a state of heart, a happy heart gives a smilling face, a heavy heart gives a sad face. I think maybe the Capies have more to worry about, then us up here in JHB. A smiling staff member is a happy worker, and they will sell more, then a disgruntled one. - bekkie

      rude CT
    29/05/2008 14:47
was in CT 3 weeks ago - man o man, the people were rude. and walking thru canal walk was a mission... and no one gives way there... and of course, no one smiled - not even the sale attendants... and let's not even start with CT drivers! was so happy to come back to gauteng... - rmk

      In service, good != friendly
    29/05/2008 14:48
Good service is not always friendly, and friendly service is not always good. Here in Jozi we get plenty of friendly service, but I'm afraid if given the choice I'd prefer unsmiling staff that actually know/care how to do their job. Yeah, you can call me an uptight twit if you like, I don't care :) - Dirty Frank

      Too True
    29/05/2008 14:49
every time I am in CT I have a bad experience with some surly or crazy person. CT is a dump - full of the idle rich and the idle poor. - lad

      lighten up
    29/05/2008 14:54
Hey guys, lighten up. At last a litte bit of light reading with truth behind it. Cape Town is a wonderful place but some people spoil it for the cheery ones wanting to have a little fun. Learn to smile! - louis

      get back what you give
    29/05/2008 14:57
I live in Joburg, but I know Cape Town well. I could never subscribe to the theory that CT service is crap and snobby while Joburg is always friendly. I find generally that if you're friendly you'll get friendly back. If you're in a bad mood, you'll probably get the same back, regardless of which city you're in. Kulula by the way is generally pricier than most other airlines. I prefer SAA for its schedule and website prices - and occasionally 1-time for bargains and leather seats. - jeremy

      CT's the place to be..
    29/05/2008 15:02
The definition of a JHB resident is "Someone who cannot find a job in CT" so these people that reluctantly wanted to help you must have recognized you JHB accent. - Deon

      nice one!
    29/05/2008 15:09
Haha. You think Cape Town is bad. Try Port Elizabeth. That city wins by a mile! - jb

      Capetonians are funny
    29/05/2008 15:11
i love how they think they have no crime and great weather. Go and spend some time on the flats in winter guys - CT doesn't equal Camps Bay. there's sadly more to it this small dorp. - Jozean

      Service
    29/05/2008 15:12
There is attitude all over SA, but more so in CT that Johannesburg I've found. As for the front office, or whatever, being paid more, being friendly to your customers will probably lead to promotion, and therefore more money. You must earn it, not just expect it as a given, as seems to be trend in SA. If I get attitude like that porcelain painter, I walk away, and make sure never to back to that type of place. - Bob

      'S true!
    29/05/2008 15:15
I have lived in Cape Town for ten years, having grown up in Benoni (me and Charlize). I have to agree that Joburgers are generally friendly and approachable -- including in the service industries -- almost without exception. Too often, I've found Cape Town service to be slow and mediocre, almost as though I am being an imposition. I have, however, also had some perfectly good service experiences in Cape Town too. - Capetonian Joburger

get a life - preferable back in Jhb
    29/05/2008 15:21
aah shame, did the bad unfriendly cape town people not like you. Coming from JHb i can only imagine how much that must have effected your sensitive personality. So strange how things to unimportant can effect a group of people and not bother the locals at all !! - Paulie

      So true
    29/05/2008 15:27
Completely agree with you. Its important to lower your expectations when entering the City if you want to be a happy. You can easily notice most capetonians state of mind in the corporate environment. JHB offices get more done in less time with the same amount of people. CPT is a great party spot but opening offices there and expecting things to happen at JHB pace is crazy. - Armend Piccard

      antique plates?
    29/05/2008 15:30
If you are looking for antique plates why do you want someone to make new ones for you?! - Catherine

@Jeremy - that is the answer....
    29/05/2008 15:35
You're exactly right, if you smile and speak nicely and politely to the service staff they will respond in kind and the opposite is also true. This is obviously not true 100% of the time - these are people and no matter how friendly you are, the person on the receiving end may just have had a really bad day. I am from CT and agree though that CT businesses don't seem to be interested in your business - but they will do you a favour if you beg nicely. They don't care if you go somewhere else. - Karen

Cape Town-some good some bad some shocking
    29/05/2008 15:37
We have regular sojourns to the Mother city but always come back with mixed feelings and experiences. Restuarants are very good or disgusting which equates with expensive to rip off. The people well!!!. The capies make the cape as for the snobby uptight white (retired or trying to look rich)locals are the pits. The attitude stinks. Walk through the canal walk (century city) and just see who cracks a smile!! What makes the Cape? The scenery and certain locals. - Brad

      CPT "advice"
    29/05/2008 15:41
I was a travel agent in the UK for a while. My customer called me to tell me the ''lovely'' people in Cape Town had told him he would be higjacked/robbed/beaten/raped just as he had landed. What a way to promote tourism CPT!! - Robyn

      stay away-easy solution
    29/05/2008 15:49
Everyone who has a problem with CT (and if you're stupid enough to judge the whole city on a few ppl you meet) then stay away there is almost/more than two for everyone of you to make up for it. we love our city - Nabelah

      cape town...
    29/05/2008 15:53
I always tell these Jozi-oids who seem to want us to have a permanent smile plastered on our faces to entertain them that we tend to be "snobbish" and form (what do you guys call it?) cliques...because we have standards! - LW

      CPT
    29/05/2008 15:53
What kind of person do you expect to be when all you do is work and drink? Rude, arrogant, impatient - signs of a true Joburger! Capies and Durbanites are just more chilled cause we take some time out to enjoy the scenery and this great ride we call life. If that doesn't happen in Joburg then sorry, but please either stop complaining, or stop stealing our parking bays at Clifton 4th ;) Kthxbye. - Zee

      Vaalie
    29/05/2008 15:54
I have noticed a marked difference to how you are treated on CT roads when driving a hired car with CA plates as opposed to driving my own car with GP plates. The msg is clear, Jhb people are not welcome as tourists. Also, their 'mountain' belongs to only them, woe to the Vaalie who goes there. - Hennie
