Funny...isn't it? 29/05/2008 13:41
Even the estate agents are like that. They make you believe that they are doing you a huge favour when selling your property. Funny, given the number of agencies that will close down with all these interest rate hikes... - Jan |

The last line gives it away... 29/05/2008 14:05
"I was very happy to make my way back to Johannesburg, with its crap weather, rampant crime, muggy pollution and people who crack a smile when you talk to them." What are you smoking, girl??
My experience of Joburg is: if someone cracks a smile at you, that's not because they're friendly, but because they're laughing at you, with that typical snotty attitude. (And no, I'm not a Capetonian.) - Mark R. |

Spot on! 29/05/2008 14:07
You're very right Georgina. After moving to beautiful CT from big and bad JHB it didn't take long before I was disillusioned. We often joke about how it seems CT people don't actually WANT your money. From lazy waitresses (it's hardly a difficult job) to surly salesmen I actually long for the friendliness of Jhb!! - JoJo |

Cape Town 29/05/2008 14:10
Sheesh, Jozi must have changed since I lived there. I don't remember any smiles, just grim-faced yuppies in hectic pursuit of wealth and hordes of nouveau riche plebs trying to impress with their latest material acquisition. Cape Townians have a gentler approach to life. Sometimes this makes service a bit slow ... ;-) - angie |

Want service with a smile - then pay me more! 29/05/2008 14:11
Not reffering to the examples you give in the column, but why is it that people allways expect service with a smile? Its not like the poorly paid employees sitting behind tills are the ones who actually gets to pocket the money. Besides, your not actually paying for their smile, your paying for the product your buying. If you want them to smile at you, give them a reason to. - T |

Service 29/05/2008 14:14
The trouble with Cape Town people is that they take themselves far too seriously.
Agree with you about Kulula although they should teach the people who read the quirky onboard instructions to try to sound more natural and not as if its a tune - sometimes you don't have a clue what they're saying. - Traveler |

I disagree 29/05/2008 14:16
I am one of the unfortunate people who has to work in Mpumalanga and Gauteng area. Here people turn to their friend and continue conversation when a customer is in front of them. I have never seen that in the Western Cape, Cape Town especially. Plus 1time is much better than Kulula. - Capie |

South Africans are simply too cheap 29/05/2008 14:23
I for one agree with the poor coffee shop owner. South Africans believe they they are entitled to get everything for nothing, and I mean all South Africans. We can walk through any shopping center in SA, and you believe that squeaky sounds are the shoes on a floor, no it isn't - South Africans are so TIGHT, what you are hearing is their b*tt cheeks rubbing against each other as they walk. - TheOne |

Service with a frown 29/05/2008 14:26
Have you picked up when you drive on a busy street in Gauteng and switch on your flicker to change lanes, the Gauteng registrations see that as "please pass me". The CT registrations see that as "please come drive next to me and keep your nose up in the air and see nothing" - Grazy |

I agree 29/05/2008 14:28
I've found that having to wait two hours for food at the franchise restaurant annex at Sun International Newlands on mutliple occasions seems to be normal. When I decided to enquire about possible service issues, the restaurant manager was so dismissive and rude, I actually laughed. It was pathetic. They do seem to think they're the cats whiskers down there. Heaven alone knows how such incapable and useless people can think so much of themselves. - Smaakstad |

Shame 29/05/2008 14:32
Trying to justify your crap life in Joburg by slagging off CT service?? Whatever. We all know what a hole Joburg is. After shopping malls, it has nothing but crime and arrogant yuppies. There's a reason why CT is one of the top tourist destinations in the world and yet Joburg doesn't feature. If you think Joburg is great, you really haven't lived. - Whatever |

? 29/05/2008 14:32
Why does everybody on the buying part of the transaction always think that they are right? If somebody doesn't want to deal with you have the good sense to just walk away intead of standing there whining. The fact that every second person approached seems to be useless tells me lot about who is really at fault. - veritas |

shame 29/05/2008 14:38
Wow, what an incredibly dumb article. Basing your judgement of CPT service on a person working on the street and a coffee shop. Granted, service in South Africa as a whole is not that good, and perhaps service in CPT isn't that great, but surely you can find more valid examples to base your argument on. CPT are not like Joburg people, otherwise it would be called Joburg. Maybe you should try going to France, because I can guarantee you that you will find the people there even less "friendly". - Chris Louw |

Service with a frown ? 29/05/2008 14:43
It is unfortunate that you had a bad experience in Cape Town. It is a beautiful city and 'most' of its people are actually quite pleasant.

Smiles 29/05/2008 14:45
Smiles come from inside, they show a state of heart, a happy heart gives a smilling face, a heavy heart gives a sad face. I think maybe the Capies have more to worry about, then us up here in JHB. A smiling staff member is a happy worker, and they will sell more, then a disgruntled one. - bekkie |

In service, good != friendly 29/05/2008 14:48
Good service is not always friendly, and friendly service is not always good. Here in Jozi we get plenty of friendly service, but I'm afraid if given the choice I'd prefer unsmiling staff that actually know/care how to do their job. Yeah, you can call me an uptight twit if you like, I don't care :) - Dirty Frank |

get back what you give 29/05/2008 14:57
I live in Joburg, but I know Cape Town well. I could never subscribe to the theory that CT service is crap and snobby while Joburg is always friendly. I find generally that if you're friendly you'll get friendly back. If you're in a bad mood, you'll probably get the same back, regardless of which city you're in. Kulula by the way is generally pricier than most other airlines. I prefer SAA for its schedule and website prices - and occasionally 1-time for bargains and leather seats. - jeremy |

Service 29/05/2008 15:12
There is attitude all over SA, but more so in CT that Johannesburg I've found. As for the front office, or whatever, being paid more, being friendly to your customers will probably lead to promotion, and therefore more money. You must earn it, not just expect it as a given, as seems to be trend in SA. If I get attitude like that porcelain painter, I walk away, and make sure never to back to that type of place. - Bob |

'S true! 29/05/2008 15:15
I have lived in Cape Town for ten years, having grown up in Benoni (me and Charlize). I have to agree that Joburgers are generally friendly and approachable -- including in the service industries -- almost without exception. Too often, I've found Cape Town service to be slow and mediocre, almost as though I am being an imposition. I have, however, also had some perfectly good service experiences in Cape Town too. - Capetonian Joburger |

get a life - preferable back in Jhb 29/05/2008 15:21

So true 29/05/2008 15:27
Completely agree with you. Its important to lower your expectations when entering the City if you want to be a happy. You can easily notice most capetonians state of mind in the corporate environment. JHB offices get more done in less time with the same amount of people. CPT is a great party spot but opening offices there and expecting things to happen at JHB pace is crazy. - Armend Piccard |

antique plates? 29/05/2008 15:30

@Jeremy - that is the answer.... 29/05/2008 15:35
You're exactly right, if you smile and speak nicely and politely to the service staff they will respond in kind and the opposite is also true. This is obviously not true 100% of the time - these are people and no matter how friendly you are, the person on the receiving end may just have had a really bad day. I am from CT and agree though that CT businesses don't seem to be interested in your business - but they will do you a favour if you beg nicely. They don't care if you go somewhere else. - Karen |

Cape Town-some good some bad some shocking 29/05/2008 15:37
We have regular sojourns to the Mother city but always come back with mixed feelings and experiences. Restuarants are very good or disgusting which equates with expensive to rip off. The people well!!!. The capies make the cape as for the snobby uptight white (retired or trying to look rich)locals are the pits. The attitude stinks. Walk through the canal walk (century city) and just see who cracks a smile!!
What makes the Cape? The scenery and certain locals. - Brad |

CPT 29/05/2008 15:53
What kind of person do you expect to be when all you do is work and drink? Rude, arrogant, impatient - signs of a true Joburger! Capies and Durbanites are just more chilled cause we take some time out to enjoy the scenery and this great ride we call life. If that doesn't happen in Joburg then sorry, but please either stop complaining, or stop stealing our parking bays at Clifton 4th ;) Kthxbye. - Zee |

Vaalie 29/05/2008 15:54
I have noticed a marked difference to how you are treated on CT roads when driving a hired car with CA plates as opposed to driving my own car with GP plates. The msg is clear, Jhb people are not welcome as tourists. Also, their 'mountain' belongs to only them, woe to the Vaalie who goes there.
