Obama wins the race

Georgina Guedes

It's a proud week for Americans, or more specifically, for American Democrats.

Nearly a century and a half after black men were given the right to vote in America (albeit with all manner of restrictions), a black man has real a shot at the presidency of that country.

In all honesty, I was a Hillary Clinton supporter. This had nothing to do with her fairer skin, and everything to do with her fairer sex. I think that a lot of this Democratic race had to do with what the candidates stood for as figureheads, rather than their actual policies.

Even in America, at the highest levels of politics, senators switched their support from Clinton to Obama because they "didn't want to be on the wrong side of history" when their grandchildren asked them who they had backed.

The interesting thing about this implication is that women were only enfranchised fifty years after black men in America. Of course, this is a simplistic comparison that doesn't take into account the restrictions placed on black voters and the ongoing racism directed at them, while white women didn't have quite the same legacy of marginalisation when they got the vote.

Pulling ahead

Or perhaps they just sensed that Obama was pulling into the lead, and didn't want to back a losing horse. So, casting aside my girl-power fervour, I now wholeheartedly support Obama myself.

Watching the election unfold is going to be interesting. Clearly American Democrats are ready for a black president. American Republicans were never going to vote for him anyway. So it will be down to the so-called "swing voters" - the people whose votes aren't automatically pledged to one party or the other, but are influenced by the politics and charisma of the candidate.

So what are Obama's politics? In the early stages of the race, it seemed that people were going vote emotionally rather than analytically. But Obama's campaign was a strong one; he was all about change when Americans are ready for change, and in the end, the better candidate won.

Or, at least, the Democrats are ready for change. Only November's presidential election will tell whether Obama has what it takes to beat McCain.

  Congrats Barack
05/06/2008 12:50
How on earth could you have supported Hillary? In this day and age of nepotism and cronyism the though of a Clinton replacing a Bush in the White House AGAIN would have been to much to bear. (Her bald faced lie about coming under sniper fire in Bosnia notwithstanding!) Heres hoping for a victory for Batack and the serious change that he has promised. - patrick bateman

That is the problem - shocking
05/06/2008 13:01
Why, when a nation is deciding their next leader is the sex or race of the person the deciding factor? I think this is shocking racism and sexism, which is supposedly what we are trying eliminate. People have said we need a female president, or hooray for the first black president but who gives a damn if their policies are rubbish. Will you be happy to look at there sense of dress or black complexion while your country goes to s%$t. Grow up people!!! Vote and support policies not races or sexes. - Karen

  Congrats to Obama
05/06/2008 13:08
Now is say that the country is going back to the people who build it in the first place if Barack win this election.america was build by sweat and blood by america immigrants - Bokamso

  Lame
05/06/2008 13:10
This Obama fascination is lame and boring, the sad ending to the story is that he won't win, it will be even worse if he does because so far all the "supporters" all over the world know about him is that he is black and apprently that is exciting and good. I don't get it, we have loads of black presidents over here in Africa already. - Jono

Is the world going politically correct crazy?
05/06/2008 13:11
It seems to me the last 6 months of the democratic party primary circus was all about race/gender. There was an "excitement in the air" because America could have its first black or female president. The real issues received very little attention. It was all about the Obama phenomena. Is there any substance? Lucky for the Americans the president is part of a greater system, unlike SA, he is not THE system. We also had an iconic figure in Mandela but today SA is arguably in more trouble than ever. - Pedro

  I admit it!
05/06/2008 13:14
I was also rooting for Hillary because she is a woman. In today's reactionary climate where everything must be swung to favour the "previously disadvantaged" I have heard millions of times that white women were most advantaged by AA. And so should all women be. I mean, black or white women have been discriminated against for hundreds of years, and it was seen as right across the white and black board. I'm sorry to see that Americans aren't ready to let the boys' club rest. Good try Hillary! - Bridget

The new face of the west
05/06/2008 13:15
The choices for the democratic candidate was merely a choice between a female communist or a black communist. They are merely different means to the same end. i hope John McCain wipes the floor with Barak "The Terrorist" Hussein Obama. - JP Strauss

  Very interesting topic
05/06/2008 13:24
Besides being female, I supported Hilary as she was on the right side of the most of the issues. The fact that she was female and more importantly a Clinton was just an incentive. All ofcourse until I first heard Obama speak. He's a demagog and seemed to be on the right side of all the issues! No matter what, it can not be ignored that he's black, and Hilary a woman. After all, it is America. - Kuhle

  what does it matter
05/06/2008 13:25
America is in a similiar position SA is in now. The right wing blows a hole in the ship and then hands it over to the left wing to sail or fix. Talking about fixing, have a look at your grammer please. - turbo_superboss

  Unbelievable
05/06/2008 13:28
This is insane - Supporting Clinton simply because she is "of the fairer sex" is just as bad as not supporting her, just because she is a woman. Supporting Obama, just because he is black is just as bad as supporting McCain just because he is white! This mentality does nothing at all for equality in the world. - Elizabeth

  come on people
05/06/2008 13:32
He?s like all the other players in U.S. politics and it showed in his first foreign policy speech since winning the nomination. All the media talk of him being the first black U.S. presidential contender is just a ruse. In fact he?s not even black but of mixed race. In essence American voters have no real alternative. The notion that they have any democratic choice is an illusion: the candidates themselves are no more than lackeys for the all-powerfull interest groups that really runs the show - AJ

  obama bin laden
05/06/2008 13:35
He is human & fallible. what makes you think he is going to make this a better world. A politician is a politician - the o' jays

  Let's hope..
05/06/2008 13:35
that he's as good a president as he is a speaker! If so, he could be just what the USA needs. - Tracey

  WHAAAATTT??
05/06/2008 13:37
Georgina, I am mortified that you fell for the beauty pageant of Obama vs Hilton. This is politics for heaven's sake. Have you actually looked at his policies? He plans to take nuclear power off the table in his negotiations with the East. How naive!! Or is he really just a terrorist in disguise?. His roots are muslim after all and wasn't it strange that he was wearing a muslim outfit when it was announced that he had won. Hope McCain obliterates him or the West is finished! - THE ANTI-CHRIST IS COMING

  Concerns
05/06/2008 13:39
Whether we like it or not the world is influenced by who is the American President. My concern is that Barack Obama is an unknown element and has very little experience compared to other candidates. Yes he has the charisma and charm but is that enough the rule America, lets hope so. - Rottie

  JP Strauss
05/06/2008 13:41
I don't think it's fair to call Senator Obama A "TERRORIST" Please stop promoting hate speech and fuelling racism. If you hate him because he is black sorry for you. This man has risen against all odds and stands to represent American people and not your racial hatred. Try and learn to see things beyond colour and sex maybe you will begin to appreciate that blacks are also capable. Good luck Obama - Touchstone

What about supporting the other previosuly disadvantaged?
05/06/2008 13:51
We are all excited about the race or sex of the possible presidential candidates for the USA presidency (not sure why we care so much about USA). Since we don't care about the policies of politicians but about being politically correct and fully representative - why don't we demand somebody from the disabled group - oh no wait they have been well represented in all forms of government for years. Mentally challenged people must make way for the intelligent ones, now that would be a nice change - Karen

One only has to read the comment by JP Strauss...
05/06/2008 13:52
to get an idea of the analytical skills of the Republican supporters. Nice article Georgina, but I'm afraid to say I'm happy Hillary bowed out... 4 more years of same-old same-old (referring to the US political dynasties) doesn't thrill me much personally. Then again, Barack's lack of experience may still cost the Democrats dear. And do not underestimate McCain either! - Jaco

Is this a beauty pageant or a political fight?
05/06/2008 14:00
Shame on you Georgina for not knowing the difference. This has nothing to do with sex or race, but political ideals!!. The man is going to destroy America with his naivete. Imagine planning to take nuclear power off the negotiating table. Who does that with radical terrorists out there? I hope McCain obliterates him or the west is finished!! - be afraid!

  Inequality
05/06/2008 14:03
A lot of women constantly call out for equality, yet with this election it seems that a lot of people did not consider giving Obama and is policies an equal consideration simply because he was not a woman. Practice what you preach. (Apologies for generalisations.) - TTM

  In three words...
05/06/2008 14:05
I have been following the campaign from day one and feel that Obama certainly deserves his win. Clinton showed weakness through lies, tears and in the end desperation... Obama might be young and black but portrays leadership skills of men twice his age across all races...I am Obama all the way...in three words "Yes...We...Can!" PS. turbo superboss- before having a go at anyone else- i think before insulting Georgina...it is spelt "GRAMMAR"...skip the "e"... - adam

  Obama
05/06/2008 14:18
It is sad that Hillary did not make it. At least she would have been a symbol of achievement for ALL women around the world and not merely a PC person of colour. We have enough Mbeki, Mugabe, Mobutu, etc. who continuously are making huge buggerups and would rather have more of the Margaret Thatcher, Indira Ghandi, etc. caliber. - MARIO

  No one saw him coming..
05/06/2008 14:21
What a historical moment! I admit that i was at first sceptical. A black man in the running for the US presidency? A long and very unlikely shot. I'm so proud of Obama, so proud that he proved the world wrong. What an inspiration. - seds

  Obama the President
05/06/2008 14:23
Obama has won, he is finally the nominee, crying or swimming about this, the majority of the democrats have spoken. At least in alife time let appreciate the good others have achieved.Obama has won and he is the next president. - clement

USA not ready for black president
05/06/2008 14:23
The USA will never vote a black man or a woman into power. The Republicans must be overjoyed at the prospect of a one sided election this time around. - Ivan

  JP Strauss
05/06/2008 14:29
Wow, JP. Your comments have left me speechless. How can you be so judgemental? SA is already struggling with narrow-minded people who think that foreigners are there to steal their work, women, etc. Labeling someone a terrorist just because he has a Muslim name is the same as killing people cause they are not SA'ns. - Jean

  president
05/06/2008 14:34
I think if the Democrats had a white male candidate instead of Obama the latter wouldn't have stood a chance. Having a black president is just that slightly better (and Oh yes, so PC!) than a female one, but watch it, in November McCain will win even the Democrats' vote. - taurus

  How long
05/06/2008 15:00
I wonder how long Obama is going to live if he is elected president. There are a lot of white supremist groups in America armed to the teeth who will never accept a black president. - steven
