Georgina Guedes

In The Star earlier this week, the front page was dedicated to a comparison of the crimes reported in the different police precincts around Johannesburg.

The purpose of the comparison was to show which suburbs were the least and most safe. The area around the Norwood Police Station was reported to be the second safest in Johannesburg. Rosebank was first.

This is heartening news. I live in Orange Grove, which borders Norwood and falls under its police precinct. Orange Grove has had a bad reputation for some time, and my mother-in-law worries about us living there.

I've done my best to reassure her. I feel perfectly safe at home. I don't hear horror stories of bad things happening to people in my neighbourhood. Children play in the streets, neighbours greet each other and now, the Houghton Hotel is being constructed on our borders, which is sure to bring up the tone of the area even more.

No good loot

The theory I've had about living in Orange Grove is that the reason that crime isn't so bad there is that no one has anything much to steal. People who break into houses in Sandton - one of the lowest ranked suburbs in The Star's piece - are guaranteed of scoring some decent jewellery, a flat-screen TV and a luxury car.

I'm certainly not suggesting for a second that we should all live in ascetic self-denial, eschewing all material possessions; I'm merely observing that it's the wealthier areas that attract the crime - which leaves me, in my journalists' and artists' haven, relatively safe for the time being.

Of course, Louis Botha Avenue is a vein of lawlessness winding its way through the suburbs - anyone who's woven between taxis along it at four o' clock on a weekday afternoon will testify to that. Add the fact that it's a major artery between Alex and Town to the cluster of shebeens and restaurants nestled along it, and it's unavoidable that some seriously dodgy stuff must go on down there.

But even Louis Botha isn't enough to bring Norwood's crime statistics down by much. And I like the place, actually. There are some bargains to be had if you're willing to shop around, and the Radium and the Blue Naartjie are some of Johannesburg's finest eating and drinking establishments.

The Norwood nightlife cycle

Norwood used to be a hive of activity with some of the best restaurants in Johannesburg lining Grant Avenue. Then a couple of the better restaurants closed down, and the arrival a tyre-fitment centre made the place seem a bit like some industrial area (although the guys give brilliant service).

More recently, a couple of new ones have opened, and they, combined with brilliant stalwarts like Picolla Primadonna, the best Woolworths café in Johannesburg and the newly refurbished Norwood Mall, is making the area exciting once more. With the Houghton Hotel coming to our doorstep, the sky's the limit.

And then, we'll all buy flat-screen TVs and luxury cars, and the crime will move to Norwood.

      Georgina who??
    17/07/2008 14:49
Interesting article this from Mrs Georgina .err. (please start using your husband surname), people often deny the fact that crime is linked to economic pressures on the lives of the poor communities, crime has nothing to do with race .the richer one become the greater the chances of being robbed. no one wants to hijack my cheap Chinese car and therefore I don?t even bother about being hijacked. - Kolobe

      That means

townships must be crime free zones. - AJ

That area borders on Hillbrow area
    17/07/2008 15:09
Good luck you have millions of Nigerian drug dealers there, Go see for your self , you can buy anything from stolen good's to crack on any corners of Louis Botha Ave , and the cops get bribes from these dealers .. - charlie

      But ..
    17/07/2008 15:09
Very plausible, but what about crime in squatter camps / informal settlements / Hillbrow etc.. Is there a crime curve that swings from upclass down to middleclass and then up again to low income housing, a type of reverse Bell curve? - Bos

      Norwood Mall=dump
    17/07/2008 15:14
Im not sure why criminals would target Norwood, its a complete dump and the most overrated place in jhb - Marc

      I agree
    17/07/2008 15:15
I have thought this for a while now. Why steal from a place where there is nothing to steal! If the robber is indeed a robber and not a murderer then they will go where the loot is. Makes sense. - Slicendice

      Crime
    17/07/2008 15:17
Thats the problem with crime isnt it..it doesnt stay to one area, rich or poor. Hence why you cant just "stay our of certain areas" in order to avoid it. - ..

      Pretentious twits
    17/07/2008 15:36
Being a journalist and living in Sandton, I was reminded why I steer clear of Norwood and Orange Grove and the Radium (which quite frankly was hip way back in the 90s and is just sad now) when I read this. It's pretentious twits like you who talk about your "artists' haven" that makes me run a mile back to the criminals in Sandton. At least they don't have to crawl back out of their bums before they rob you. - Jules

To have or not to have
    17/07/2008 15:45
Guy's it's simple... its the story about the "have's" and the "have's not". Finished and klaar! One will steal from another, whether in a squatter camp or upmarket area. It's got nothing to do with materiality - it's got to do with have or not have.. - Skaapie

      kolobe
    17/07/2008 16:06
kolobe it has nothing to do with you whatever name Georgina uses - we are talking crime here not what name is best - but just proves you are one of those men that think you own a woman and that she must do as you say. wake up and smell the rose women have become their own and don't need to stand behind a man anymore. Georgina good for you for carrying on with your own name. now let's get on with the subject of crime. - liber

do you really live in orange grove?
    17/07/2008 16:14
because I have lived in the area my whole life and I can guarantee you, that flat screen tv or no flat screen tv, horror stories abound. The priceless gem that is Louis Botha Ave is just one of the problems. Hijackings, house robberies i've experienced it all - many times over. - MBK

      Kolobe?
    17/07/2008 16:14
What makes you so arrogant, buddy? Don't tell people what name they should use just because you're backwards and chauvanist. The rest of us have evolved. Poor you. Seriously, poor, poor silly man. - L

      Norwood/ Orange Grove
    17/07/2008 16:22
I think I'll also echo the sentiments of the writer . I have also lived in Orange Grove for close to 3 years and I have never expirienced any criminal activities even though my Nigerian neighbours were a bit suspect for the fact that they'd leave in the wee hours of the morning ,whatever their business was ,and when I leave for work in the morninng they'd be sleeping like babies. Other than that nothing really. - Gerald Mphuthi

      Ignorance of some
    17/07/2008 16:40
Crime affects everyone from rich to poor and over all races. The facts still remind though... Those who are targeted tend to be white, because they have that what criminals are after. Why target a black man or coloured man when you will only get a cellphone or R100, when you can go for the R10 000 and flat screen TV's in the white neighborhoods. Race/hate related crime do actually also affect white more than any other in SA, due to the past and people building grudges in their minds. - ElectroMan

      Robberies
    17/07/2008 16:48
I was robbed less than a month after changing insurance and the robbers knew exactly what we had.... down to wife's specified jewlery. I'm convinced someone at ins company played a role. But its no coincidence that I filled out 10 pages of forms telling them exactly what we ha and what the value was. We also had to write down our alam, security features etc. - Gavin

      wow
    17/07/2008 17:25
Interesting theory, criminals follow the money trail, wow didn't see that coming. Basically we should all not buy flat screen tv's,not have jewelry, not have luxury cars, move to the bronxy type ghetto suburbs so that we can feel safe in our own homes. What have we become conditioned to? Crime exists, yes, but shouldn't there be something done about it. We have the right to live, to feel safe, wherever we are, but instead are told that it is because you are wealthy, expect to be robbed. - kerusha

      SA's unfortunate situation
    17/07/2008 18:07
When a country consists of very poor and very rich it will experience crime driven by the economic situation at hand. The wealthier neighborhoods experience the big hits by organised criminals and the poor experience the daily consistant extortion by mob-type gangs and loose head criminal elements. While the economical imbalance exists the theft-crimes will prevail. Imagine how it would have been in SA without any police at all. Reminds me of the old wild west... - ElectroMan

      Crime
    18/07/2008 06:05
In Cape Town the son of the very highly-paid top police commissioner, Mzwandile Petros, is -- it appears -- a thug who hijacks cars. So bang goes the theory of "poverty drove me to it". Crime simply pays. And it pays well. - Den
