Confused 24/03/2008 08:52
I'm a little confused.... you talk about wanting debate and discussion, yet anyone who differs with your opinion you lambaste and call racist. I take issue with you on many things, but I am certainly not racist having a black adopted son. And as a Christian, I think you have something to learn about humility. To be honest, I don't think you are showing Christian values in this column at all - but that is merely my opinion.... A non-racist opinion expressed by a white middle-aged South African. - Alan |

Huh? 24/03/2008 09:05
Are you the same JQ that called black people that just want to get along with white people "coconuts"? A true Christian does not insult people. A true Christian has love in his/her heart. A true Christian does not judge. A true Christian has God's love shining through. That said, I do hope you really are a Christian. Remember, it's not your skin colour that counts, but what's inside that skin that counts! Happy Easter & God bless! - Chantelle |

This is one man's point of view - not a DEBATE! 24/03/2008 09:20
It is impossible to have a proper debate on a subject raised in a column when the columnist pre-empts the responses - and passes comment before he has read them! Jon, there are many of us who would and do agree with you - when we are able to sift out the gist of your debateable subject! This article is not the subject of a debate, it is your attempt to provide a controversial column which will pay for your Easter! - Terry |

Jon, you're right, people are in denial... 24/03/2008 09:20
and you need to practice what you preach. Anyone who disagrees with what you have to say, is either a racist or a coconut - depending on the colour of their skin. In this column you quote the single line that made any sense whatsoever in your torrent of racist drivel last week. Right now this country needs debate, but at the moment, people are in serious denial - and with that I mean ALL people. I will be praying for your soul too Jon. - Dread |

denials 24/03/2008 09:30
Maybe Jon, you're the one who's in denial regarding your own interpretation of events. Anyone who disagrees with, or challenges you, is a bigoted racism. Of course racism is only whites against blacks, we know that from the selection of the cricket team where a white man has been excluded (and it's been officially explained) by virtue of the colour of his skin. Had this happened the other way around, the Proteas would probably be outlawed by the ICC on the grounds of racism. Think about it!!! - Megan |

Denials, demials 24/03/2008 09:42
Jon why do you waiste your breath by responding to the people commenting on these forums? From what I have read in comments on your columns and all the others for that matter, 99% of them do not know the meaning of debate and its anyhow always the same immature old bunch throwing the same old toys out the cot all the time. (Their toys must be all broken by now.) - Tina |

Hi Jon 24/03/2008 09:52
A sad, but truthful way to start a new week. Thank you.
It's so sad, when one is trying to put a heartfelt point accross, something so true to your ideas and feelings...and then the condemnation. No. 1. Your a racist, 2. It's all because of the Apartheid Regime..the Boer War!! Hell!
It feels useless when I, for one, and you are trying to come to grips with the problems in our country... but every topic, even if one would say "the wind is blowing to day" becomes a war of namecalling & drivel. - Alicia |

Hi Jon, I could not put your article in proper context as I did not read the comments that upset you. However you seem to be doing the same thing you are accusing others of doing. If we open our ideas to the public domain we must expect reactions that don't fit our version of the debate rules. I think I understand what you mean, but then I refer to my second sentence again.

Tired Jon 24/03/2008 09:53
Jon i think that as soon as South Africans recognize that racism exists in all of us, the sooner we will come to terms with ourselves. What we need to focus on is bigotry; the thing that turns racism into something ugly and unacceptable. Read your own collumn with an unbiased eye and you will find that you yourself are spewing forth drivel that generates hate based on race ........
You are tired Jon - time to hang up your pen and retire greacefully ..... - chris |

John, I read your article and re-read it a second time. I disconnected and pondered on your words, I was not going to comment but then I felt I needed too. My brother who gives you the right to call people racists if they don't listen to your words?Sure, they may insult you but this is only because they felt insulted in the first place, thats what you don't get and never will. It's not denialism, don't stoop to such levels. If your message was conveyed in a more civil/amicable way maybe people..... - Glenn |

Waste of bandwidth... please do something, News24 24/03/2008 09:58
I guess it must hurt when the overwhelming majority of readers call drivel. The real journalist would respond with a clever, cutting piece to engage his reader's attention again. Devoting an entire column evidently to lament not damning them all to hell is just sad and rather crass. I will not be stopping by here again. - rg |

Debate of the deaf 24/03/2008 10:03
Jon Qwelane's column is possibly the most honest reflection of the true state of our society. Of the reasonable debate he describes there is none to be seen. Many of his readers are indeed deaf to reasoned arguments he sometimes offers. But likewise, Qwelane is deaf to reasoned arguments offered by many of his readers. This page reflects the escence of the South African disourse. History shows that this deafness is not likely to be resolved except by bloodshed. - Another one |

People are people because of other people 24/03/2008 10:07
uMuntu ngumuntu ngabantu Jon - you need to make more effort to understand where these people are coming from if you write about them and to them daily. Calling them racist is too simplistic and you are a better journalist than that. Get into their skin, understand their fears and hopes and frustrations - then you will really write provocative stuff. At the moment, you aren't even scratching the skin and your articles aren't much better than the spiteful hysterics below - Craig |

Get a life. 24/03/2008 10:14
You say you are a Christian and you are not a racist. Act like it. Your should not be looking at other peoples faults and should be trying to fix your own faults (Read The Bible). Once again you have nothing to say except blame the rest of the world for your problems (Everyone who disagrees with you is a racist). Blah Blah Blah. If you are not part of the solution go to Zimbabwe where you can be part of the racist problem. - Mark |

Isn't odd that these are the very same people who support your column when it attacks president Mbeki? They love you when you do a hatched job for them in attacking your own, but they do not want you to even discuss the issue of their racism, let alone their bigotry, hatred and me me me first attitude. We worry about while fears, but never seem capable of addressing black concerns - Len van Heerden |

Pseudo intellectual trash 24/03/2008 10:16
Hi Jon
I deliberately do not read articles like yours or listen to the abundant inane radio talk shows as they simply serve to further polarise a South Africa full of the most beautiful and diverse cultures. Your mindless articles and the pathetic excuses for talk shows demonstrate a lack of mental evolution and finesse. There is nothing subtle or challenging in what you or the talk show hosts offer. It is simple pseudo intellectual trash. Be a man - Rise above it!! Please - Garrrick |

Debate of the deaf (2) 24/03/2008 10:24
In my previous contribution on under this title, I show that this debate of hate can only be resolved in bloodshed. Let us not be naive: Since 1994 our "National Democratic Revolution" has resulted in about the same number of South Africans to be brutaly killed as in the French revolution. (By similar means and circumstances too.) The way in which Qwelane and his readers kill one another's thoughts in this debate just reflects the way South Africans are killing one another at night. - Another one |

Jesus loves you 24/03/2008 10:28
As a born again, spirit filled Christian since 5 July 1987, it has been my experience for the past 20 years that the more intimate my relationship with God becomes, the more my compassion for people grows.
We serve an awesome, extraordinary God whose kindness and mercy is endless. Jon, my suggestion to you is that you humble yourself and ask our precious Lord to show you your own heart. Then maybe the hatred and bitterness that people are reacting to in your column will stop. - Jesus is King |

MLK 24/03/2008 10:34
SA needs a non racist, all inclusive "think tank" to devise, develop and implement a successful and prosperous future for our beloved country. Your words inspire debate that is at times unhealthy. You are an intelligent man with a public platform which should be used wisely and not divisibly. If this was a vote you'd be out, we live in a democracy my boy. Majority rules.
Jon, try this - write something nice about South Africa and try not blaming everything on the whites, then see the response. you'll be surprised.. - Mark |

Hi John
I like reading your columns, they are often intriguing and shows that you can in fact voice your on opinion on a popular news website.
I however disagree with the fact that every week your column has to be about racism and your criticism of the minority of racists that still inhabit South Africa. Concerning this week's article, I ask myself, is this story in the public interest, does it inform me in any way? - Chris |

Denials, denials 24/03/2008 11:21
I'll return to a theme I visited during your last invective Jon, why not worry about the more poignant issues? You may think all us white people are racist and incomparably useless. Why not though focus on the failings of your black brothers in the ANC, crime, mainly perpetrated by blacks, Mugabe's evil regime and the thousands of emaciated kids throughout Africa who rely on white, western charity to survive. Probably the whites fault though. - Arnna |

Lets get rid of JQ 24/03/2008 11:30
Guys, please understand, News24 measures the success of their columnists by the number of reactions they get. By continuously reacting to JQ's moronic ponderings, you are merely encouraging him to talk more crap each time. Jon knows full well that he needs to get a rise out of us in order to maintain his position. If nobody reacts to his drivel, the News 24 editors will not be able to justify keeping him around. Prayers 24/03/2008 11:42
Please, all of us who believe in God, any God, let us all pray for Zimbabwe and it's people this week. Their plight is so much worse than ours, with a Devil as a Dictator, fighting like only devils can to hold on to power.
A brother of a friend of mine tells us that there, they live in a rural area, is absolutely nothing to eat. Not in the shops, and not in the fields.
Pray that they attain freedom from this evil man who has made a mockery of democrary and has killed and tortured so many. - Alicia |
