'I have never voted since'

Jon Qwelane

The week of many holidays began on Freedom Day, when South Africans of many walks of life celebrated the day in 1994 as millions of us, including those of us who had hitherto never had occasion to cast a ballot to choose those whom we would have rule over us, voted for a government of our choice and not the bantustan figurines who had regularly been foisted upon us.

Sadly, the "freedom" which April 1994 promised, has been grossly abused and Desmond Tutu's "rainbow people" have never really enjoyed the freedom which the day had ushered in.

But who can ever forget that clear, autumn day (in Gauteng, at least) when long queues formed from early morning and snaked round blocks of buildings, lengthening by the hour?

The day had a picnic air about it: where I live in Dawn Park, outside Boksburg, the shopping centre which SACP secretary-general Chris Hani had visited before he was murdered by white racists a year earlier, had been turned into a polling station.

I had earlier in the day been driving in many parts of Gauteng (then called the PWV complex) to gauge the mood and turnout; it was decidedly no different wherever one went.

I went to Dawn Park shopping centre at about 10:00 deciding to come back some two hours later to cast my vote.

Long time coming

In 1992 my family had been among the first few blacks to buy property in what the erstwhile Conservative Party had declared "white man's land". Indeed Boksburg, along with Carletonville on the West Rand, were the last bastions of apartheid racism in the province.

When eventually I made it to the polling station - the queue kept lengthening each time more people disappeared inside to vote - I found an atmosphere quite out of place with the South Africa of the time, an anachronism of a moment in history!

We all stood patiently in the long queue, awaiting our moment with destiny. So, one might have asked, where were the thousands of doomsaying racists who had stocked up on rolls of toilet paper, soap, baked beans and soup powders before heading off into the hills to escape the prophesied and feared swart gevaar?

Boksburg had been full of posters at many lampposts with cartoons depicting then President de Klerk kneeling in front of a seated Nelson Mandela, with the caption: "Mandela en sy klerk". The National Party objected and the posters were removed, but quickly replaced with others: "One Man One Vote - Once!"

Perhaps it was a final realisation that they would never stop the revolution, perhaps the failure by rightwingers to unleash a bloodbath by murdering Hani had eventually convinced them they would never again win anything; or, better still, their half-witted assault on the Codesa conference in Kempton Park - led by one Constand Viljoen and Eugene Terre'Blanche - had shown them the wheel of destiny would crush them if they stood in its way.

Terre'Blanche, provocative as ever, had attempted to stop De Klerk addressing a meeting in Ventersdorp and one Boer was killed in the skirmish; Terre'Blanche, ever given to senseless hyperbole and clearly craving a greatness he will never have, dubbed the little confrontation "die oorlog van Ventersdorp".

The pathetic Terre'Blanche then led a motley crowd of bearded, potbellied, beer-swilling sods to kill innocent people in Mafikeng, my hometown, in a futile attempt to prop up the hated bantustan puppet "government" of Lucas Mangope.

He failed miserably: Mangope fell, and the murderous slobs butchered more than 50 unarmed people - a crime for which they were never punished. The plaasjapies then returned with their tails hanging between their miserable hind legs.

In the polling booth I held the two cards - one for the provincial legislature, the other for the national assembly - and said a silent prayer in memory of my father, who had constantly told my siblings and I that one day we would be free. He had chosen self-exile to teach in Botswana, rather than continue as a teacher in South Africa because he hated Bantu Education with a passion.

I shed tears of relief when I made my crosses, saying: "Dad, this is for you."

I have never voted since then, and doubt it very much if I ever will again.

      Vote
    05/05/2008 08:41
People who don?t vote have no right to complain. - KC

      Big mouth
    05/05/2008 08:42
For someone that doesn't take the time to vote you have a bloody big mouth boet. Like those little dogs (stoepkakkertjies) that make a racket and run a mile when confronted. - Grant

      Why???
    05/05/2008 08:45
Exercising your right to change or keep the govt of your choice, is one of the rights hundreds of people shed their blood for. Jon, why do you shame their memory, by not continuing your democratic RESPONSIBILTY to vote? - cynick

      What's your point Jon?
    05/05/2008 08:47
    Pointless dribble. - BrianG

      Mindless Cattle
    05/05/2008 08:47
"...voted for a government of our choice" It's a sad time now that "The people's choice" isn't an educated one. Rather than judge the representitives on merit, they blindly and stupidly vote in the ANC. -People who have CLEARLY shown NO ability to govern this country! Come on SA!! Let's start using our heads and appeal for QUALIFIED government officials and not just vote for the sake of voting! The ANC is pathetic and we need to pressure them into doing something about their people! - Brian

      Freedom day
    05/05/2008 08:47
Thanks for this great article Jon, however the majority of our people (blacks)and my family will keep on voting for the ANC until kingdom comes. South Africa will never be ruled by a white man (baas)again. - Calvin Mkhize

      Vote
    05/05/2008 08:48
How - Jon? Will you not be voting for your favourite political pet project, cdr JZ...quite contradicting i say old chap. But it is your constitutional right not to vote and for that i thank many people like you that did vote on that picnic airy day. - Thabang

      Your story
    05/05/2008 08:51
Beautiful story Jon. Just a pity about the constant derogatory remarks about whites. When you say - "white racists" you obviously mean it with the contempt it deserves. Now when I call you a "black racist" think about what you are and if you are any better than those people you despise. You spread your hatred and sorrow to readers instead of trying to reconcile. If you do not wish to reconcile, perhaps you should be leaving this country together with all the other "racists" who have left.hamba - Charl

      Mr Qwelane
    05/05/2008 08:52
You are spreading racial hatred, Please realise that what happened in the past was horribly wrong, and almost every white south african will, and has apologised for it. Even I have felt bad for it, and I was too young to have been involved. But to keep reminding black people how evil the WHITE man is, will not help heal this country. Please, rather start writing something about how we can solve this countries problems, instead of calling for more blood!!!!!!! - HoRRoR

      The End of the Story?
    05/05/2008 08:53
The vote is something so precious people have devoted their lives to getting it, and indeed, some GAVE their lives for that right. And now you say you have not voted since and may never vote again. That is actually shameful; but, tell us all: why? - duncan

      Nice article
    05/05/2008 08:53
This is a nice emotional article. Pity you have never voted again. I also wonder what you are teaching your children. Is it they must not vote to make a change and accept whatever others choose or they must make the X for the change? - Pasta

      Voting
    05/05/2008 08:54
I thought i am the only african person, who sees no point of voting. - Mogosoana

      Uhm
    05/05/2008 08:54
Your story is touching - but i'm not sure what the point is you're trying to make? - Andrew

      I'm confused
    05/05/2008 08:54
by your comment: "Dad, this is for you" followed by "I have never voted since". Why was the first vote such an emotional event and yet no longer has any meaning or significance? - Lloyd Macklin

You dont need to vote again...
    05/05/2008 08:55
...and let me guess : no matter how badly the country is run, were you to vote again, it would be for the same inept bunch of pocket-power-liners? - Wilson

      ????
    05/05/2008 09:02
And the point of this article is?? - JOHAN

      JQ
    05/05/2008 09:04
Hope some blind people of South Africa will see what you stand for Jon. Thanks for this article. Many times I listen and read about your mum,but this is the forst time I came across article of your father. I'm sure he is proud of you. - Zoran

      Jon
    05/05/2008 09:05
I saw Jons article this morning with headline: I have never voted since, and though maybe he will write a story that has nothing to do with race. Alas no to be. - Andyt

      Sad
    05/05/2008 09:06
Good piece of writing bra Jon. I'm touched. - Xolani

      your loss
    05/05/2008 09:07
Wow, for once there is one thing that you and scores of white people have in common. Rather than voting, which is the best option we have, you would rather give up one of the most fundamental chances you will ever have at bringing about change to instead moan from the sidelines. - Nanker Phelge

      JQ
    05/05/2008 09:07
My thought is that your story would have carried as much meaning as it does without the word "racist". Can you not write a column without including this word? By the way the last time I voted was is 94 as there is no party in SA worth voting for. - Mark

      Racism
    05/05/2008 09:07
Lately, I open one of Jon's articles up and do a "Find" on the website. If I find anything starting with "racis.." I don't even bother reading. Basically, I didn't have to bother reading the most of his articles lately, what a great time saver. - Azonic

      Why Jon?
    05/05/2008 09:07
Jon, I know democracy does not always turn out perfectly, but why would you not vote again? You are 100% correct in that freedom has been abused, but what is our alternative? Not to vote, and by default allow the racists to take control again? Or, my suggestion, keep working to make it even slightly better? A lot of people thought that gaining freedom and the vote was all that was needed. They were wrong - it was only the start of a long and complex process that will take 50 years or more! - WAM

      The right to criticise
    05/05/2008 09:08
Jon, By admitting that you do not exercise your political right by casting a vote you immediately lose the right to criticise any politician. Stand up and be prepared to support the party that is closest to what you yourself believe in. I will never tell you who to vote for. But it is your democratic responsibility as a citizen to exercise that right. - Jim

      I have never voted since
    05/05/2008 09:12
Good for you Jon, not that your single vote will make a difference anyway! - Sly

      I am prepared to queue
    05/05/2008 09:13
I will queue to vote to have JQ suspended and brought before the HRC. - kwk

      Jon, you need help...
    05/05/2008 09:13
...because you are a deeply troubled man. Shame. - jannie

      Funny
    05/05/2008 09:14
I just remember the positive side of the whole thing, how everyone was able to vote for the first time. You can turn anything into racial hate speech. You are a fence sitter. - Think Positive

      Why did you stop voting?
    05/05/2008 09:14
It will be very interesting to find out why you stopped voting...apathy?just busy-ness? OR perhaps have you lost faith in the politics of the day? I believe that it is a mockery and an insult of the highest order to give up the sacred priviledge to determine your destiny and simply leave it to chance! We all should vote at all cost, public figures like you JQ should be at the fore-front of this wave! That's the least we could do to honuour those who died to guarantee future generations this right! - Pitso

      Prayed?
    05/05/2008 09:14
You spew racism from the one side of your face and then you have the audacity to mention that you said a little prayer for your father? were you praying to your ancestors? Because God does not tolerate such behaviour. - JP Strauss

      I have not voted
    05/05/2008 09:15
Jon, I am a White person and have never voted and never will. I just do not trust an politian, whatever colour, as they feed you a pack of lies to get your vote and then nothing comes of it anyway. So no party will ever get my vote and I do not see it as a big deal anyway.Ken - Ken

      Bully for you
    05/05/2008 09:16
That's a really clever way of changing South Africa for the better. But then again, if it did change for the better, you would not have anything to whinge about in your column. - SA_Positive

      History Lesson
    05/05/2008 09:17
Sure, and my great granddad fought the British in the Boer War. When we became a republic, I said I prayer to him, out of thanks. - Sinudeity

      Great -
    05/05/2008 09:18
That would be one less vote for the ANC I guess. - Mikey

      Boring
    05/05/2008 09:19
And the point is? This is definitely the last time I?ll be reading Jon?s poorly written and self-indulgent ramblings. Obviously the poor soul is carrying a lot of hatred and has found the perfect place to vent his anger. - ghost

      why not?
    05/05/2008 09:22
So why haven't you voted since? You give an emotional description of the first democratic polling day in 1994 and talk about the freedom you felt at that moment....and after that nothing! Surely freedom is like a marriage. It requires constant work to survive. If you don't continue to vote, what was the fight for...and how long will freedom last? You have a hell of a lot to say about this country, good and bad, but you don't appear able to put your money where your mouth is! - jeremy

      Idiot
    05/05/2008 09:22
You should not complain about ?our? so called government if you do not have the integrity or the responsibility to vote. You are probably one of the idiots who complain about crime but participate it. You also cry racist and we all know you are a racist. You are not a man. You are a weak pathetic excuse for a human being. May you continue to live in your misery for the rest of your life. P.S. De Klerk got a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. What have you achieved? nothing except try to incite racist views. - Mark

      Poor jon
    05/05/2008 09:23
    Someone give him a hug - B

      why?
    05/05/2008 09:25
    why jon, why? - amandzing

      Voting
    05/05/2008 09:26
I thus presume that by not voting Jon is happy to endorse the corruption, the hollowing out of state institutions, and the ongoing crime situation. All the freedom fighters in the struggle who suffered and died to give him the right to vote and to participate in ongoing democracy must be very proud of him. - Ben

      Take responsibility
    05/05/2008 09:27
You complain that the freedom you voted for has not been realised but then admit that you haven't voted since 1994. You have no right to complain that you haven't got the government that you want if you don't vote! Everybody in a democracy has a responsibility to weigh up the candidates and vote for the one they think will produce results. Your father must be turning in his grave at how you have thrown away the freedom he so longed for. - Clare

      The past (again)?
    05/05/2008 09:27
You hold on to the past more than you could ever hold on to hope that this country would ever be free for all. Stop looking back, you might just fall over your own feet if you're not looking where you tread. - Riaan

      With Zuma at the helm
    05/05/2008 09:29
we have another chance to correct our 1994 mistake (the one-directional reconciliation tone which has proved a futile exercise). We have come full circle, with some racists and a bonus of regrettable coconuts suggesting we will go the Zim route. In the name of those who died for this struggle, it is time the masses demand change becuase reconciliation failed to bring that change. The ANC has returned to the masses and I will be campaigning vigorously for JZ in my area. - Justice

      @Calvin Mkhize
    05/05/2008 09:32
My point exactly, Calvin!! As you say, you, your family and "(blacks)" will continue to vote for the ANC despite the fact that they are absolutely TRASHING this country. You must be stupid to vote for the ANC. Simply by reading articles published on news24 you'll see how inept they are. The ANC is the biggest problem facing SA at present. THAY ARE USELESS!!! - Brian

      Journalist?
    05/05/2008 09:38
Quote "SACP Secretary-general Chris Hani had just visited before he was murdered by crazed white racists a year earlier, had been turned into a polling station." Learn to Engleesh deliciously spokes you moron - George

      RE: Whatever!
    05/05/2008 09:41
You refuse to take part in the only voice a citizen has to make a change? You know what, you have disappointed me more than any other columnist I know. - Lejane

      Freedom of CHOICE!
    05/05/2008 09:47
The entire point of a free country is that you are free to choose what to do. Choosing not to vote is a valid choice too. As soon as you are forced to pick one of the corrupt politicians then you are no longer in a free country. Just because you chose the third option does not negate your right to complain. I doubt that most of the posters here would understand this as I have very little faith in their intellectual capacity. - JP

Same boat as Jon but I still vote.
    05/05/2008 09:48
I has been noted that if people fail to vote for the ANC, they abstain and won't vote for any party. I have voted for the ANC before, but, I need to be convinced this time around, failing of which, I will vote for other Black political parties as I did in 1994. I will never vote for the rightwing and racist infested DA. We need a new party that is non racial with no historical connections with ruthlessly competent leaders of all races. - Libembe

I think your pills have expired Jon.
    05/05/2008 09:49
What is all this gibberish early in the morning, after a long weekend nogal. You must go back to the polls and vote next year, please Jon. A bit of advice please don not dwell too much unto the past because it will forever enslave you. Have a nice day, week and year ahead. Vote and be counted, Don't vote and dissapear in oblivion. - Luzuko

      Another Bonehead
    05/05/2008 09:51
Justice - you're one sharp kookie.... Zimbabwe never employed the route of reconciliation and where is it today? They also have a situation of an "enriched few", the very situation you are whining about in our own country - you are sucha knob!!! Unfortunately, being a South African, black or white, we don't have anything better to look forward to than the same end result of every "independent state" or decolonised country north of our border. - Sean

      Racist dribble
    05/05/2008 09:53
Jon only keeps proving the point that racism in this country is a one-way street: always white on black, never the other way around. You are a racist, I read your column for the last time. Viva David Bullard! - Surette

      pointless to vote
    05/05/2008 09:56
currently the anc is way to powerfull, until the anc devides into 2 sanctions (labour and democrat),there is no point in voting. - tom

      WELL WRITTEN
    05/05/2008 09:58
WELL DONE JOHN KEEP IT UP? - MOE

      Sad situation...
    05/05/2008 09:59
to call up sad memories to gather sympathy. Such a sad fool you are! Not even the balls to vote for your currupt ANC hey? You black racist! - Big R

      Government you deserve
    05/05/2008 10:00
By voting, you may not get the government you want, by NOT VOTING, you get the government you deserve. - Jim

      Same boat? ...want an oar?
    05/05/2008 10:05
I was born on 30th December, 1976 - do the math and you'll find that I matriculated in 1994. at the age of 17. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't vote for whatever damn government I would have wanted. Should I also be bitter and angry and let it all go to crap without trying to make a difference? I agree with KC - stop moaning and groaning like you do every time you put finger to keyboard, and earn the right to complain about the abysmal state of our nation. One Jon, zero vote? - J Cilliers

U r all missing the point!!!
    05/05/2008 10:06
U r all missing the point. Very touching and heartfelt article from a man reflecting on a not so recent time when we all had rose tinted sunglasses on, but despite that, a great moment in SAs history. Good article Jon. - Dave

      Your dad RAN AWAY?
    05/05/2008 10:07
Your dad left the country because he hated Bantu Education, and you have the audacity to criticize those who leave because they hate the crime, racism, negativity and corruption? By YOUR own arguments, your dad should have tried to make "Bantu Education" better from the inside. Your more hardy brothers suffered and died for the vote ... and now you blithely tell us you don't bother to exercise that dearly-bought civic responsibility? ?I am Jon, free at last, free to ? well, NOT vote.? Geezz. - Bignose

      JQ
    05/05/2008 10:09
Hey there, what we are all forgetting is that democracy does not mean swapping 46 years of Nationalist rule for 46 years of ANC rule, although JZ's comment about ruling till Christ returns bears some examination. The nut houses are filled with Christs in all shapes and forms. Does this mean that JZ can go home now? - Big Mart

      so much to say...
    05/05/2008 10:12
you time and time again have so much to say about people who vote, people who leave this country because they choose to. yet your own life, your own family have done the exact same thing because of their circumstances (your father leaving), yet you depise and be little people who are doing it now. practice what you preach... every man for himself. you and your father are no different from every person leaving SA today. - south african

      RSA Patriot
    05/05/2008 10:13
Jon, you are a disgrace to our country and a shame to your brethren. As a representative you should be promoting our country, and uplifting your people. We , all South Africans, are bound to our country if we choose to be apart of it, and should thus be loyal to the goals of reconciliation and freedom. But exercising your right not too vote, you give up your right to make comment on our Govt. I hope the true South Africans, loyal to our Govt. and to all our people, see through your hollow nature. - Grant

      Shameful News24 Users
    05/05/2008 10:13
Please note that I'm NOT responding to JQ's article but to you news24 users. I actually cannot believe that you have the time and the energy to respond to nonsense articles from JQ every week! Every black person has a story to tell, I have one too. But we need to find a way to influence things positively today. That is what someone in Jon's position should be doing. - Hero Nakamura

      violins

I hear violins playing. There's nothing wrong with sentiment, per se. I do despise sentiment that is used as a cover-up, though. To Justice and others who are demanding the government do something because reconciliation hasn't worked, consider how many people on both sides have made an effort and how many have deliberately made no effort, or fought against reconciliation. There are plenty on both sides, so beware of pointing fingers. - Craig

NOTHING IS EVER THAT BAD JQ....
    05/05/2008 10:17
MOSTLY A decent ARTICLE. NEVER GIVE UP JQ IF YOU DON'T VOTE YOU LOSE THE RIGHT TO CRITICISE. I REALLY WISH YOU FIND HAPPYNESS. - niels

      father
    05/05/2008 10:20
So your father left, instead of using his knowledge to teach his people? Stop hating so much. How can you say you've prayed (when you voted) yet you're so full of hate? - Chantelle

      Fascists
    05/05/2008 10:23
Apparently SA whites have spread their fascism to London, Rome, Berlin, Paris and Copenhagen. This week saw the election of fascist mayors in London and Rome. Let's make a swop send all the whites to these fascist strongholds and return all non-whites to Africa. Bet you the whites will want to come back to Africa in less than 12 months! - Prowler

      Voting
    05/05/2008 10:33
Interesting article Jon. I am concerned about all the people who don't see anythin gwrong with not voting though, and you are fuelling this. I can understand not voting if one is 100% happy with teh current regime's handling of Zim, aids, corruption, our infrastructure, electricity etc, then no need to vote. But, if not, then VOTE, it doesn't matter for whom, just anyone to make the opposition stronger - only that will help keep our politicians in power more honest. - Wiseman

      @ Prowler
    05/05/2008 10:39
Hey Prowler sir, if your government will sponsor me the plane tickets etc.to move (contrary to popular believe, not all whites are rich enough or have dual citizenship), I'll be first in line. Promise you. But I bet you I won't want to come back in 12 months. I might just get used to having electricity again, decent roads, a police force willing to do their job, and most of all - SAFETY and SECURITY! - J.O

      That Day!
    05/05/2008 10:41
I too, will never gorget the joy, commoradery, laughter and happiness of that day. Everyone, getting to know everyone else. We were lining up in D'ville. It started raining and I went home to get all the umbrellas I had. What dreams we had, all shattered now. If only all ANC members would not vote. They are like puppets. Beleiving lies and liars. Jon, your thoughts on the Scorpions please. - Alicia

      Welcome to the present
    05/05/2008 10:46
Jon, You really need to get into present day. Stop living in the past. Rather than staying content with a government that "at least isn't run by white racists", why don't you make a stand and try get a government that can actually solve problems, instead of replacing them with other ones. Oh, and that jazz about Eugene Terre'blance not being punished? Where do you get you're facts man? He is in jail since he was convicted, and wont get out unless he is in a body bag. He got what he deserved... - Joe

seeking news source with REAL columnsts
    05/05/2008 10:50
John, nearly every column you've written has had something to do with racism or your disgruntled past. Unlike so many of my successful black friends who get on with life and are optimistic about the future, you contineously try and stir negative emotions amongst readers. 2 things 1. we dont care about YOUR past. Their is a bigger picture, its about our future. 2. hopefully your boss reads this.. your columns are negative and i've decided to find an alternative news source. one with real writters! - Paul

      JQ
    05/05/2008 10:52
In a sense i can understand some of the article, and i can see that its good and nice, up to the point where all the racial hate starts to come out. Why must you !@#$ up a nice piece of material by being a racist yourself? - John

      Please tell me.............
    05/05/2008 11:00
Where is it written that one loses the right to criticise or disagree if one doesn't vote. Jon is entitled to his opinion - that's democracy. - Gail

      It's the voters fault
    05/05/2008 11:01
Saying people who don't vote have no right to complain is like saying only ill doctors can treat sick people or only immoral people can tell us how to behave or only criminals should be judges. Oops, sorry, that is the way things already are in the Drained Bowl Nation ... - Luke Real

      Let go
    05/05/2008 11:12
Jon, every week I read your article, and can only hope for your sake that one day you let go of the anger you obviously still harbour. Millions of others have. - Ali

      No Chance
    05/05/2008 11:16
Funny Jon, I experienced my 1994 vote differently. Not a chance for my father or mother of the past but for me, my children and the people who never had a fair chance to fulfil the good that was inside them to grow and make our beautiful country a better place for all.You and other people like you advocating this much hate are no better than Terre'blanche! You carry blinkers with hate spawning out of your mouth which this bleading country cannot absorb anymore. - Loraine

      JQ
    05/05/2008 11:23
First of all next year when we vote again, please dont cast your vote, but I can bet my life on it that if things dont turn out your way you will be the first sick person to shout racism or blame the white for it. Right? Any way why dont you write about something meaningfull for a cahnge huh? Write something about the petrol price hikes the electricity hikes, the rising inflation etc etc. - n.s

I used to listen to you when you were still at 702.Very reaonable then, what happened lately.Does missing out on the Bee gravy train make you so bitter Bra John?.Agree with you on most topics though - Stanley

      Voting in new South Africa
    05/05/2008 11:27
JON, I understand your point, but there are many good white compatriots who are equaly determined to make this country a success, for themselves and their childrens.I know this,I live with them.Let us rather use the ballot to influence events,to make this country a better place for all of us,black white, pink, you name it!we have a great future ahead of us!God bless! - Rrajane

I will also never vote again
    05/05/2008 11:40
I look around me at all the crime, corruption, nepotism, chaos, bad roads, bad drinking water, Eskom problems, etc and I ask myself the following: 'What has realy improved/changed? Is THIS what the struggle was for, what so many people sacrificed their lives for?' I think not. The only real changes were political ones. On ground level nothing has changed for the better for the man in the street. On the contrary, there is a massive decline. I myself will also never vote again. - Foxie

      JQ
    05/05/2008 11:41
Not voting is something not self-respecting black south african should be proud of JQ. I enjoy your unapologetic writing.S A needs it badly. By the way you will never win against your ardent column followers. They love you JQ.They don't realise it.They really do.They are such masochists. - Ntinda

      So much hatred
    05/05/2008 11:48
I personally never comment on these forums but I am forced to comment on this. Jon you don't belong in this country. You are an afro pessimist and you make me sick. I am white woman have two daughters, one white and one black. We share our lives, our love, our dissapointments, our happy moments. We are the new SA - we are making a difference. You should find a black hole and bury yourself. Oh and take your hatred and your clean ballot paper with you. Idiot - JTA

16 years later it is still about black and white...
    05/05/2008 11:52
Why after 16 years is everything still qualified with a white or black? If we can start looking at the world around us and judge on merit, instead of colour, the true vision of Mandela's New South Africa and the final death blow to apartheid will be ours. What is wrong, stays wrong (irrespective of the color of your skin) and the same goes for what is right... :( - JJ

      Time to relax
    05/05/2008 11:54
I am sooooooo over all the hatred and tension of living in Africa. We were visited by family recently and they were amazed at how relaxed everyone in Brisbane was. Get a life people and move on. - Kevin in Brisbane

      So sad
    05/05/2008 11:54
If 1994 was truly the last time you voted you have no business commenting on anything in the new SA! You carry it like a trophy!? Until you make a difference (other than fuelling the hatred) please refrain from having an opinion about SA and ten publishing it here! - Christo

      Pointless
    05/05/2008 11:56
What is the point of this article Jon? What are you trying to say, what is your intention with this article? Why do you constantly brood on the racism of 10 years past and not look at the inequality which is now exercised on the back-then 'racists' offspring? Why do you refuse to live in the present and let the past be in the past? Go Vote, make a difference and stop complaining about it. IF you vote, then you can complain. Simple as that... - Jan

      NO VOTE NO CRY
    05/05/2008 11:58
Dear Jon. I also have since not voted because it simply wouldnt make a difference in a one party state, in a country run by mob-rule. But you my friend have everything to gain - nothing to lose or are you still peeved off that Comrade Snuki and the likes scooped all the lucrative jobs and you got nothing. - Clive

Dont waste a vote just for the sake of voting...
    05/05/2008 12:03
Anyone votes just for the sake of voting is a bumbling idiot and doesn't really value their RIGHT to vote. I will not vote unless I am 100% sure that my vote is going to a party that is worthy of my vote. I value my rigth to vote and will not give it up to any politcal party easily. They have to earn my vote by convincing me that they are competent enough to run our country and do so with passion, pride, purpose and dignity. Until such time I WONT be voting. - Daryl Naidoo

      Lovely
    05/05/2008 12:04
Such prose Jon. I shed a silent tear then laughed out loud. Only took you 4 paragraphs, nay maybe 2 paragraphs and 2 sentences before you got to tote the word "racist". B-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l! You sir have perfected the art of taking up space and saying absolutely nothing. Where do I sign up for such a job? - Justin

      You're the man, bra Jon
    05/05/2008 12:04
How vividly I can relate your sentiments, JQ! And isn't it ironic that the very racists who did everything to keep blacks disenfranchised now lambast JQ for exercising his democratic right not to vote? Akin to the hypocritical noises about human rights violations in Zim. Just when did these self-righteous racists discover that blacks do have human rights anyway? If it's okay to endlessly 'Bullard' blacks for being 'bumbling fools', why the fuss if JQ tiressly exposes white racism? - Paul Jonah

      Bra Jon
    05/05/2008 12:06
Sir, I would appreciate if you can change the tone of your articles to be more positive & forward looking. There's too much negative reporting in this country. However, there's a lot of positive things to write about. Come on my fellow black brother, let bygones be bygones and think more about the future of our country. - Mzekezeke

      Vote
    05/05/2008 12:15
Jon I do not need to hear your reasons for not voting, just go and vote, that is an instruction, do it for yourself since last time it was for your Dad. - Thandokuhle

      No right to comment?
    05/05/2008 12:16
It is a democratic right NOT to vote. Not voting does not mean you cannot comment. Perhaps there were no parties you supported, a perfectly legitimate scenario. It's like saying you cannot comment because you live overseas. Absolute simplistic rubbish and childishin the extreme. - AJ

      Bra John's Hatred
    05/05/2008 12:19
Your hatred is destroying your humanity, John. If apartheid have taught us anything, it is that no good comes from hatred and prejudice. People like you and right wing racists are two sides of the same coin. You are part of the problem John, not the solution. I hope you will find some peace for your troubled hart, because, seriously dude, your hate mongering just reveals your lack of character. - Francois

      Opposition parties...
    05/05/2008 12:19
People need change. Unfortunately,no opposition party is convincing enough (to the majority). Our democracy is still new. Even though things are tough in the dessert for the Israelites, they'll never go back to Egypt under the rule of the Pharaoh!! - Athi

      What A Man
    05/05/2008 12:23
Oh my word - how typical. All the noise you make means nothing. I wouldnt worry about unprotected sex - HIV does not cause AIDS. If you are not sure about this, ask the Minister in charge. - Faith

      Mzekezeke
    05/05/2008 12:25
Well said Mzekezeke. Oust these negative war mongers. Finally a black man who is not afraid to be as JQ says a "coconut" and get on with living our lives instead of dwelling in the past. Well done...Stand up for your beliefs. - Craig

      John Q
    05/05/2008 12:48
I'm surprised News24 publishes this moronic rubbish. It's just a thinly disguised attack on whites every single time this self absorbed idiot writes an article. John, you're a clown! Plain and simple, be positive or shut your yap, there are millions of people who would rather try to be positive in this county as opposed to whining like stuffed pigs like you do! Maybe you should ask Simba for a sponsorship? Seeing as though you have a giant chip on your shoulder... - Jason

      Bra John
    05/05/2008 12:52
Shame on you, by not voting You are endorsing all that is wrong in ths country. Have the same pride as you had in 1994 and vote for what you believe in and want to see. Countries like Zim are what they are today becaues of people who abstained from voting, because they thought it was a waste of time. What are you teaching your children? Your father taught you well and you do not want to pass that to your childern (selfish). - Proud to vote
