A punch-drunk nation

Answerit can help.

Jon Qwelane

I am sitting in front of my computer at home, staring disbelievingly at our household water-and-electricity bill sent by the Ekurhuleni Metro Council for the period May-June this year, and I am very angry.

The "amount payable" reflects as R3 838.47 and the date for the payment to be received is July 9. Last month we paid R2 232 for water and electricity consumption over a 30-day period. My calculations tell me that we have supposedly consumed water and power to the astronomical cost of R6 070 in just over two months.

This is diabolical; it is sheer daylight robbery! This is mugging by the state!

My queries to the Ekurhuleni Council have not resulted in much: I have been bluntly, if not curtly, told that the billing is correct and I must ensure that in my home we do not use electricity excessively. We must cut down on the use of heaters, the geyser and all that usual rubbish "advice".

The point is that I am not running a disco, nor do I run any business at home. We are a family of four in the house, and my son and daughter are not home the whole day.

We do add our bit to the national effort to conserve energy - switching off all appliances not in use, switching off all the lights in the rooms not occupied, switching off the geyser, and we have invested in a gas heater.

Yet the murderous electricity bill continues.

Paying through the neck

We are now having to pay through the neck for the gross incompetence of this hopelessly out-of-sorts government. You should not forget that Thabo Mbeki himself has already admitted publicly that some ten years ago the government was warned the country was heading towards an electricity collapse, and the authorities ignored the warning.

We are becoming too punch-drunk as a nation; we receive so many deadly blows with such telling effect, yet we do absolutely nothing to counter the murderous economic punches!

There was a time, not so long ago, when I could fill the tank of my car with R600 worth of petrol and be able to travel to Mafikeng to visit my siblings, and then drive back three-quarters of the way before filling up again.

Nowadays R600 takes me nowhere near Mafikeng, only around Johannesburg for a day or two at the most, and then I must find some more money to top up the tank.

Okay, some cynic will say I must consider travelling by bicycle or by taxi. But then that would negate the recent technological advances meant to lighten some of life's burdens.

Otherwise, by the same argument, we might as well forget about the e-mail and the telephone, to go back to the old way of sending messages by smoke signals, running messenger and courier pigeon?

Solution

And what would I suggest as a solution to the mess? The first thing would be to boot out of office this hopelessly incompetent and arrogant government, and to replace them with what might be a better group of people who have the know-how.

The second would be to ensure that the new government would staff the bureaucracy with competent and efficient officials who are well trained to do the job.

Flowing from all those efforts would be the benefits of eradicating cronyism and corruption.

But the first important act would be to forget all about struggle allegiances and credentials, to put South Africans first - we have been amply shown that the men and women with the guns may be good liberators, but they are not necessarily the best governors.

That way, hopefully, I will no more spend miserable mornings gazing at the obscene electricity bills!

  Woo, kick them out!
23/06/2008 08:39
Exactly John, let these fools pay for their incompetence with their jobs! We need people who know what they are doing, and do it for US the people, not their bank balances and buddies! - Tommo

  Billing
23/06/2008 08:40
Jon, you're clearly being ripped off (unless you fill empty and fill your pool every day). Welcome to council billing 101! You dont like it? - then get disconnected! Viva Viva! We are all following our money - down the tubes!!!! - AJ

this country can go to hell and burn
23/06/2008 08:41
we have leaders saying they will take up arms and kill opposing leaders, what kind of democracy is this. We are quickly being compared to zimbabwe in many areas, our leaders for one. This country is a mess and i dont see the glory days ever coming back. God save us all... - metroplex

  Punch-drunk
23/06/2008 08:44
I never thought I'd say this, but today I wholeheartedly agree with Jon- in fact I challenge anyone to disagree! (Government fatcats and their cronies excluded) - S

  Punch drunk
23/06/2008 08:48
Yep this is what you all get when you voted in the ANC.From 4 provinces to 9 start counting 5 more of every positions in local government that puts another couple of 100 thousands extra fat cats that must be paid.Ebery one drives a 4x4 esh what a liberty from bicycle to donkey cart.Esh then flying tooos and frooss family and all,and esh then allmy wives and childrens need all the contracts.Esh we take the example of one Durban city cop who has a home of 25 million rand another 10 million in cars - james

  Agreed.
23/06/2008 08:48
I support you 100%. Just imagine this country being managed properly. would be heaven. - Supporter

  Yes, that bill is wrong
23/06/2008 08:51
Hey Jon, R6K for two months is definitely wrong. We are also 4 in the family, and I work from home. Yet I'll only pay around R1900 over two months. Get a lawyer to tackle it for you. - Punk

  True, but....
23/06/2008 08:55
But Jon.... "we've been having it!" :) - AvgJoe

  Unbelievable
23/06/2008 08:56
Wow Jon, I know how you feel. We too switch off geysers, lights and basically don't use a heater and still battle to see the difference on our account. - Gail

  Don't worry Jon
23/06/2008 08:58
Zuma will come and fix all this mess. We haven't as yet heard what he plans to do to turn this mess around but he can sing, he can dance & he's popular with the ladies - what more do we need? lets take up arms & kill for him! - colinh

It will get worse before it gets better...
23/06/2008 08:59
I could not agree more with you 2nd last paragraph. However with the statements coming out of the ANCYL and COSATU, I fear that we are in for some dark times indeed. - Rian

  Interesting..
23/06/2008 09:09
Interesting article. Your first point is very valid - the electricity price is horrendous - and many invoices are incorrect - but lets face it - there is no interest from the service provider to correct issue brought to their attention, and failure to settle incrrect bills only results in ones service being cut off. The petrol price....different topic mate - hopeless

  You made your bed Jon...
23/06/2008 09:10
now lie in it. You and your ilk have no right to complain. - TedHaller

  conspiracy theory
23/06/2008 09:11
Jon I think you should definitely look into the high price of your electricity bill- sounds like you are being way overcharged. My theory is that its a white racist conspiracy to bring you down- just like every problem in this country - patrick bateman

  Action, not complaints
23/06/2008 09:17
No more complaints. We need action! Please contribute ideas how we can get the masses to understand that they are being misled. Then how we can turn that understanding into votes at the next elections. Seems a near impossible task when you grasp the realities of South Africa. - Danepol

Jacob Zuma will fix everything ;)
23/06/2008 09:19
Jon, dont worry, the man you worship will fix eveything for you. If he takes over the government, he'll make sure there is no electricity, no roads, no water, no economy; therefore no accounts for you to pay. Besides, if he isn't voted in as president or he goes to jail, we'll just kill everyone until he does become president. - dhv

  Agree
23/06/2008 09:20
Good article, thanks Jon... agree 100% with your sentiments and share the same experiences month after month after month... BUT, the only 'able' bodies to replace Thabo unfortunately don't have an education, and should be even more incompetent. Assumption made because it's the same party effectively, again, and all they have done to date is spend exorbitant amounts of state money on law suits. What good has Zuma and cronies ACTUALLY done? besides participating in the 'struggle'... really sad... - Greg

  punch-drunk nation
23/06/2008 09:22
We are a family of 4 and our electricity and water bill during winter is only about R800 per month (excluding rates). Since we stay in Cape Town, which is wet in winter, I have no option than to use my tumbledryer now and then. In December we filled our portable pool (4m). Although I don't know how much water it took, it could not have been to little, and still we did not reach R2000. - Sonja

Then DO something to change it...
23/06/2008 09:24
I agree with you John, except that I recall in an earlier column you mentioned how you have not voted since 1994 - I hope that these crises will make you change your mind and exercise your right to vote these idiots out of power when the elections come around soon. - Rodders

  ANC fattys
23/06/2008 09:32
We have to fork out and keep pretending all is well in our country. We have leaders claiming they will kill! We have leaders eating and sitting in warm homes! We have leaders with saving accounts for holidays that are funded by tax payers! We want the fattys to leave & educated people's people in charge! - Reggie

  Time for change
23/06/2008 09:34
I look across the water to Barak Obama's slogan, A time for change, and wonder why we haven't woken up to that here. We need a change in SA. The ANC leadership has used and abused the people of this country for their own benefit for too long now. The first step to improving our lot is to vote out the current Gov and elect people with a real action plan and the skills to help us all through this dark time. I hope African eyes are opened before they blindly vote for Zuma. - Andrew

  Costs
23/06/2008 09:34
Jon, I think you are being ripped off. There must be something wrong with your water and electricity meters. My water and elec bill is about R200 per month. But you have to take into account that my flatmate and I stay in a small place and we only have the geyser on for about 1h30 per day, we shower once a day, and we only turn i light on if we need to. So you with a family and probably a bigger house will have a bigger bill but R3000 is crazy. Doesn't it include property tax? - Hennie

  Its quite simple
23/06/2008 09:37
John, some weeks ago you confessed to having stopped voting. It is because of igorant and politically apathetic people like you, that South Africa is losing its leading edge as the shining beacon in Africa. My advice... start voting for a political party whose priorities are right and who gives a damn about the people of SA and who will make sure the work gets done in the public service by competent public servants. Its truly that simple. - Fran

  But Jon.
23/06/2008 09:38
If you don't like it, leave the country. We don't need complainers like you. - Kevin

  I agree with you
23/06/2008 09:39
I agree we need properly trained people to do the goods for us, unfortunately your 'brothers' are just chasing them all away to Australia and England etc so good luck with the whole moaning thing... - Danny

  try this Jon
23/06/2008 09:40
Read your meters yourself and see where the figures are coming from. It really is worth it in this day and age. I sometimes think someone sucks these figures out their thumb. - Big mart

What on earth do you drive?
23/06/2008 09:42
Jon, I suggest you stop trying to compete with the bureaucrats and downsize your vehicle. What on earth are you driving if you USED to pay R600 to fill up? However, I agree entirely with your complaints about efficient govt officials as opposed to rewarding struggle veterans with jobs they're not qualified for. It would be cheaper, in the long run, to pay them a lump sum and minimise the long term cost to the country. - DavidD

  Punch drunk Jon
23/06/2008 09:55
Your articles are erratic. you condemn the government for rising costs in one article and in another you confess to not voting. Your solution smacks of irony, so my question to you Jon is HOW do we "boot out of office this hopelessly incompetent and arrogant government?" Is there a way without voting? - John Camp

  AvgJoe
23/06/2008 10:22
That had me in stitches! Never really thought the ad was that great untill now! Thanks! John sell your X5 for something more user, eco & pocket friendly! Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses'. - cvz

  What happened to logic?
23/06/2008 10:22
I agree, that's a massive bill and probably not correct. However, your 'cycling/taxi' logic is...flawed. A taxi lightens the burden more - you won't even have to drive yourself, you can just sit back and relax. Also, there's a significant difference between cycling/taking a taxi and not using email, or a telephone. Apart from anything else, if more people cycled there'd almost certainly be fewer overweight people. @Kevin - LOL, good one :-) - CTheB

  Cannot believe...
23/06/2008 10:25
Was this article written by another person going by the same name as the Jon Q we know? Very good article and I could not agree more. I do believe that because there is no real opposition in this country that not enough pressure is put on this government to pull their fingers out their arses. I would assume that if there was a good opposition, that this government would not rule come next election. But, I guess we're stuck with this ANC for good. - Gus

  Jon, dear Jon
23/06/2008 10:26
Why would South Africa be different to any other country in Africa. There was & is no miracle, the miracle must still happen and it ain't going to happen through gun wielding power hungry thugs. You want to live by the revolution, you will die by the revolution.Hatred destroys Jon, look around you! - Juan

Unfortunately, no better candites will every come from ANC
23/06/2008 10:31
The solution flawed. This better group of people, with know how do not feature in the ANC. They are well hidden and are not part of the elite group who have any influence outcomes. Should one dare stick out their neck and make a public statement not endorsed by the elite, they are dismissed. Remember Madlala-Routledge failing to follow government policy on aids? We also all know that the masses will vote for ANC, or even abstain from voting, regardless. These same people then protest afterwards when there is no service delivery, acting as if the two are totally unrelated. Did you vote recently? Brace yourself for further corruption, higher taxes and poorer deliveries. - AC

Unfortunately ANC does not have better leaders on offer

  Jon
23/06/2008 10:34
Well Jon, you will complain until your face turns blue or you can simply leave the country. Those of us who remain behind will take up arms and kill until Zuma becomes president and then we'll have no electricity and water. Don't you get it Jon, the communists have won... - Dt

  Kick the ANC out!
23/06/2008 10:35
I can't agree more with you John. Kick the current government out! By that I mean the ANC as a whole. They can't manage this country and they have prooved it over and over and over again!!! You obviously think Zuma and his cronies will do a better and more honest job... Sorry boet you live in a dream world. - Boer

  Let's make it right
23/06/2008 10:49
We have truly become a nation of whingers - and with good reason. But this could genuinely be a wonderful place to live if we started to pull together. Put people in positions of suthority who have ability and integrity - irrespective of colour. Use the skill of Whites as mentors for other races. Let the voices of Black folk with wisdom and restraint be heard, condemning what is wrong irrespective of race. We are all in this together. We can mess it up or make it work. - Doug

  Well said...
23/06/2008 10:57
Truly touches many hearts and mind I think... maybe time we should stand up and thorughly voice our concerns... maybe someone out there has a ear to listen... Angry villager... Pick up the pitch forks and lanterns!!!! - Griet

  What?
23/06/2008 11:01

  authorities
23/06/2008 11:02
You say Mebeki warned the authorities about the crisis years ago.It is Mebeki's job to see that the "authorities" do what he authorise.HE did not do his job.The problem with you Jon is that you probably voted for them and you will vote for them again in the next election and the next and the next and the next and the next no matter how bad they govern. This is africa after all. - andre

  In power
23/06/2008 11:05

  Hypocrisy!!
23/06/2008 11:25
I regularly read your column and I can only say that I am astounded at your hypocrisy. While I cannot but agree with the topic of your article, I have to say. If a white dared to voice a similar opinion you would have hammered him for being a racist colonist. I can only draw one conclusion from this. Only people YOU personally approve of may hold opinions. The rest of us must just put up and shut up. Yay "The World According to John". Open your eyes man. - Phelan

For once I actually agree with you Jon!
23/06/2008 11:39
A great column today Jon. I do however wonder if the current admnistration will ever be held accountable for the current situation. Because for once they can't blame the previous regime or anyone else for there blatant failures in governance and service delivery! I see a comment by Kevin that you 'complainers' should leave. He must therefore be perfectly happy to pay unacceptably high petrol, electricity and water bills. - Gareth

  Government's Fault?
23/06/2008 11:44
Fact, South African electricity is still one of the cheapest in the world, With the latest increases included. Fact, The fuel price is not dicated by our Government, South Africa imports oil and as such has no choice but to pay the ruling price. I as John feel the pinch of the latest price increases and yes whilst I agree that there is much neeeded improvement by Government in many areas this is not one of them. - Tyrone

  Sometimes Pragmatic
23/06/2008 11:49
You should've balanced this article with comments on all the killing and "dying for leaders" statements going around and the fact that Bob succeeded in maintaining Africa's special version of the democratic process, as described in the book "Democracy - The Africa Perspective, by Thabo Mbeki and Robert Mugabe" - George A

  Water and Electricity Consumption..
23/06/2008 12:04
Check your water pressure pipe if they not dripping, I also had the same problem until I fixed an outside water pressure pipe, little drips seem small but wait till you put a bucket and see how quickly it gets filled-up, then multiply by the hours and days. Enormous waste, electricity consumption is a result of hard use of geyser, stove, kettle, 60w bulbs (instead of using 15w). Your account could have been is arrears thus attracting late penalties, and then add your property rates and taxes. - Luzuko
