Zimbabwe tour a farce
15/03/2005 14:22 - (SA)
This whole Zimbabwean cricket experience has been a farce.
Let's face it, our cricket is not that healthy, for all that our convincing wins over our neighbours may suggest.
There's nothing quite like dominating a series, and beating a side senseless, but with all due respect, some of our high school teams would've given Taibu's men a run for their money.
What completely un-inspires me is the waste of broadcast time, spectator time and logistical set-up to make the circumstances right for what ultimately should not even be regarded as an official series.
Having said all that, there is an upside.
Great for Mondi Zondeki and Ashwell Prince who may have cemented themselves a place in the squad for the West Indies Tour (which it turns out could also be against their B team).
I'm also glad for Smithy, winning is a habit, and coming off the back of a tough summer against the English, there's nothing wrong with developing that habit, especially with the Aussies in the back of his mind.
I still firmly feel that the Zimbos should have the same sanctions imposed upon them as we had during that nasty isolation period. Nothing against the sportsman...
Super 12
I also watched the Super 12 matches this weekend, and after the Cats got creamed, was left bitterly shaking my head again. Matt Rogers misses the Waratahs game, but his replacement (namesake of that brattish Aussie tennis ace Lleyton - Hewitt) has such a blinder and turns in a man of the match performance.
The age old question arises... where is our depth? Furthermore... it seems that our rugby players have forgotten how to hold the ball, run with it, get tackled, wait for a ruck to form and recycle.
No, our players are such genius that they must kick possession away, or into the hands of the enemy who willingly bring it back with interest.
I see talent in our teams, what I don't see is great planning and clear thinking.
Fine, we don't have the physical prowess of the Kiwi backs and the superb organisation of the Aussie backs, but when are we going to catch up?
When are we going to give up our label as bridesmaid of the tournament, and bring home the bacon instead of the wooden spoon?
