The Manto and Thabo show

Answerit can help.

Max du Preez

Does Manto Tshabalala-Msimang know something about Thabo Mbeki that makes him afraid to alienate her? Does Jackie Selebi?

These questions have been asked thousands of times by ordinary citizens in recent weeks. Many people ask me, because they think as a journalist I have inside information.

I don't know if there is something in our president's past that some of his ANC colleagues can blackmail him with. But I think the president should take note of the fact that his recent erratic and irrational behaviour has caused South Africans to ask these kinds of questions.

We the South African people deserve better than what has been happening in our politics in recent times. We're a rather decent lot. We gave the world icons such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu - in fact, more Nobel Prize laureates per capita than any other nation.

We are embarrassed

We don't deserve front page headlines announcing that our health minister was "a drunk and a thief". We don't deserve stories on our news bulletins of offers to a provincial party leader of a huge sum of money "and the services of a young woman" if he helped with floor crossing. We are embarrassed to hear our police commissioner boasts of his close relationships with kingpins in the criminal world such as Glen Agliotti and Brett Kebble.

We're a classy nation, we don't deserve the seediness that has been characterising our politics in recent times.

Perhaps Mbeki is refusing to fire Manto because he owes her after she has steadfastly propagated and implemented his bizarre views on HIV/Aids while even his closest cabinet allies distanced themselves from him. Perhaps he had a relationship with her at some point in their past - they did leave South Africa together in 1962 and have known each other well since then.

But the president cannot blame us when we wonder whether she learnt something about him during the almost five decades they have known each other that would deeply embarrass him if were to become public knowledge.

Or perhaps she is not the one Mbeki is scared of. Perhaps it is her husband, Mendi Msimang. I have been told that Msimang phoned Mbeki when Manto was in hospital advising the president that it would be unwise of him to use the opportunity to fire his wife from the cabinet.

Financial affairs

Msimang has also known Mbeki for decades. As treasurer-general of the ANC he must know more than most about the financial affairs of the top ANC leaders. Does he perhaps know something that makes Mbeki feel vulnerable?

It isn't very hard to imagine that police commissioner Jackie Selebi could have some dirt on the president. Why else would Mbeki keep him on after it became public knowledge that he had close links with organised crime figures?

Well, there could be another explanation. It could very well be that Mbeki is simply rewarding Tshabalala-Msimang and Selebi's loyalty with loyalty, or that he genuinely thinks they are doing a really good job.

But in the present political atmosphere of cloak and dagger these are not the explanations that come to mind first.

Perhaps it will be good for South Africa if the ANC re-elected Mbeki as its leader in December. Can you imagine how insecure and erratic he will be if he's going to be president of the country until mid-2009 but one of his opponents - it could be Jacob Zuma - will be running the ruling party from the end of 2007?

what is good for the goose...
05/09/2007 09:46
Max did you know that de Klerk had an affair with The Groot Krokodil. Also did you know that the previous apartheid regime ministers braai-d Blacks at Vlakplaas and chewed the meat in order to gain black power. DUH .Stop interfering with the personal lives of people. If you want to criticise the Govt and its ministers, then to it appropriately. Dont call them thieves and drunks. You and the rest of the white population are not the Mother Theresa's of SA.Who knows what you get up to unnoticed. - Nick

this is what i have been saying all along!!! - john

  explanation
05/09/2007 09:59
Max, if you read His Majesty Mbeki's weekly newsletter, you'll see he's in her corner because of her 'struggle' credentials. Acedemic qualifications and merit has NEVER been a qualifying criteria for leadership roles! It's all based on the 'buddy-buddy' system! - Juan

It's the culture, not a skeleton...
05/09/2007 10:15
A good article as usual Max, but I disagree with you when you wonder if the one has something on the other IE dirt which Selebi, Msimang or anyone else may have on Mbeki. It appears to me that it's a cultural thing. The world knows that Robert Mugabe is a dictator and many other wonderful things, but Mbeki never comments or turns against him, Winnie Mandela has committed many crimes against her own people, but she is a hero to the people?! The same applies to Jacob Zuma etc etc - Grant

Max, you need to check your facts!
05/09/2007 10:18
SA does not have the most Nobel prize laureates per capita. In fact, SA does not even feature in the list. No 1 spot goes to Iceland. - Dionysus

  Oh my, Maxie!
05/09/2007 10:21
Is that a critique I hear you raise against the oh-so-good ANC Maxie? You who have so many times in the past accused us whiteys (of which you apparantly didn't want to be part of) of racism whenever we criticised the oh-so-perfect ANC?You do realize that this letter, barring the last paragraph, made you sound just like any other white South African,or any South African with a basic understanding of democracy, discussing South African politics around the braai on a Saturday night do you Mr. du Preez? - J.O

  The Manto and Thabo Show
05/09/2007 10:24
I wholeheartedly concur with Max du Preez's article: I believe many Southern African leaders know something about Mbeki's past which could be used to blackmail him, including Robert Mugabe... - Alexandra Fincham

  Add Mugabe to the list
05/09/2007 10:31
No other reason even comes to mind than blackmail. - swan

  Let's all speculate...
05/09/2007 10:33
What are going to gain by writing this clolumn? Can it happen maybe that you are member of certain trying to discredit our government? The point the fact you are journal doesn't make you speculations credible. And please don't talk about WE unless you have been to all the rural communties or townships of this country where the majority lives. Coffee shop gossip does not translate to public opinion. But if this is your opinion I accept it. - Mlu

  The Peoples Evil
05/09/2007 10:38
The general rule is: regardless of the magnitude of your fathers errors, you should always cover his behind. Like the Noahs' son story, the one that recieved a curse was the one that exposed his fathers nakedness. Those that covered it recieved a blessing. Mind you, being drunk is no good, but respect authority because the Man upstairs made him to be president. Now the father will always bless his loyal children. - No one

Woosh?and the point dodges Nick altogether
05/09/2007 10:39
Nick, tons of white people get up to all sorts of naughtiness behind closed doors. Not sure what race has to do with it but? These people that you refer to aren't in a position to make major decisions that impact the lives of millions of South Africans (and their neighbours, in the case of Zimbabwe). That makes them high profile and open to scrutiny over their suitability to carry out their job properly. And rightly so. - Some Bloke

  Credibility
05/09/2007 10:40
... has become a scarce resource for our leaders. Can't help but agree with Max's comments on Mbeki's apparently irrational behaviour of late. Here is a man of obvious intellect and ability, displaying behaviour completely at odds with this.I,too, voted for change in SA in 94 & elected to NOT emigrate because I believed in my country.I'm watching the promise of a good future crumble through a criminal refusal to give up on struggle favours and mature! We're slipping into "Banana Republic" status... - Cynicus

  Thabo or who ever!
05/09/2007 10:50
Yes, we are asking more and more questions regarding this issue and yes, the questions are getting more personal. The reason being that none of our questions are being answered! Under rug swept. Hush. Quiet diplomacy. Maybe it will just go away.... Ssshhhhh! It doesn't matter really, because come election time, the very people that the ANC is failing so miserably, will vote them back into power. - Gerrie Coertzen

  I'll speak S-L-O-W-L-Y for Nick & JO
05/09/2007 10:51
Oh dear, Nick! Let me see.I see someone stealing,so that makes it ok for me to steal? *shrug* makes sense,I suppose. So why don't we simply descend into complete anarchy and chaos.. 'cos that's as low as we can go.You are apparently a balanced person-a chip on EACH shoulder.. J.O. perhaps you miss the point that criticism/questioning of government is HEALTHY...and that MdP's criticism is no more than CONSISTENCY on his part. Cast your mind back to pre-1994 days ... who was MdP questioning/critting then? - Cynicus

  It doesn't stop
05/09/2007 10:55
Let's not start on the dubious past of our Metro chief... - Eish

  I agree with GRANT
05/09/2007 10:58
Grant's view seems to me to be the most obvious answer. Different values mark our diverse society, so I think Grant is correct when he says its a cultural thing. It seems the only logical explanation for the Mugabe, Selebi and Manto debacle. A habit of defending comerades in distress must be the reason for these issues. That, or they are all just dirty politicians verging on dictatorship, which I (as a optimist, and perhaps naively so) prefer not to believe. - Deon

  LOL!
05/09/2007 11:02
I have theorised aloud about this theory in my political science classes, never with much response...FINALLY someone agrees with me! Its great that people like Max are willing to blur the line of political correctness in a quest for factual correctness, even if nothing comes of it at least the questions are being asked :) And on the note of racism - FFS people just leave it alone!!This article has nothing to do with race... - mEeLa

  This is Africa Bud!
05/09/2007 11:09
What is all the fuss about. These people are only being true to their nature.Me first & screw the rest. How more natural can you get.South African people are not a decent bunch and nor do we have any class or culture.Just drive home from work on the roads and see how we behave toward each other irrespective of race and gender and see how traumatised we are. Then feel the relief of having arrived home alive and uninjured.Africa will never change for the better.Dream on suckers - Quench

  Secrets and skeletons
05/09/2007 11:10
As a conspiracy theorist, I believe one should look for skeletons at Quattro and then some secrets will be revealed. - Devil's Advocate

  No explanation owed
05/09/2007 11:12
I find it very annoying that South African?s feel that the President owes them explanation when makes decisions with regard to this subordinates. People must learn to respect the decision that President makes if not let them step into power and see if they can do a better job. My opinion of the President is that he is highly intelligent man and therefore does what he feels is in the interest state. One thing I have learnt about white South Africans is that anything done by a black person they find fault in it so they are no winning with them. - Annoyed

  there we go again
05/09/2007 11:13
Nick, why is it always about race. Why when the Sunday Times declared all truth about a politician, is it about the whities against the darkies. Max has spoken from fact about Manto and the gang, so leave it at that. This is should not be a racial problem, this is where the people of SA want to know why there is no reaction to all the corrupt happenings in this country. - Adrian

  oi...
05/09/2007 11:24
I see as usual we have the let's split up the trek and go our own way group. We are asked to give our opinions on the piece. Not shoot the messenger, even though you may have a bone to pick. For me, who don't due to my age, your comments is just annoying spam. Contribute people. Dont just bitch about Max. What the writer of this piece is saying is kinda relevant, dont you think? We have a petty gangsta government. Could not do it better than the Nats! - marianne

  Annoyed
05/09/2007 11:33
The right to ask qusetions is a fundamental part of freedom of speech. The last time I checked Mr Mbeki was the elected president of SA. As such he is appointed by the people and answerable to the country - gv

  Nick the Fool
05/09/2007 11:36
Thanks Max. If any person steals a bar of chocolate from, say Pick n Pay, you are called a thief and taken away by the police. For a doctor to steal from a patient who is under anaesthetic is just gross and primitive and horribly unthinkable. A DOCTOR who swore to uphold the Hipocratic Oath. Nick, with fools like you, voting for creatures like this, there is no hope... not for you and not for this country. Open your eyes. THINK! Use your two braincells. - Alicia

  Annoyed
05/09/2007 11:40
My dearest "Annoyed". A highly intelligent man does not insist that HIV doesn't cause AIDS. Neither does an intelligent man who is leader of a country where 1 in 8 people is infected with the disease, claim that he doesn't personally know anyone with the disease. Nor should he fire the one woman who actually helped her dying people! An intelligent man doesn't shut up when he should speak out. He should not refrain from helping millions of his own people, when it is in his power to do so! - Gerrie Coertzen

Adrian-there we go again and again and again
05/09/2007 11:42
I dont care about corruption, crime and the economy. I dont care about what you whites have to say. If i am a victim of crime, so be it. We have been victims of crimes for decades in the townships caused by you whites. It is called survival of the fittest. Oh suddenly you Whites are being affected by corruption, crime, health poor governance. Welcome aboard, you all had it too soft when the Klan ruled. Remember, whites only--public toilets, what a disgrace.... - Nick

  what!!!!
05/09/2007 11:44
Annoyed.....I disagree with everything that you have to say!! And Max you keep up the good work! - carol
