ANC leaders have let us down
06/08/2008 08:31  - (SA)

Answerit can help.

Max du Preez

Never before have so many politicians showed their true colours so clearly in such a short time as the new ANC leadership had done the last few days.

I'm not talking about the ANC Youth League's Julius Malema. He is just an immature, attention-seeking clown. I suspect he isn't blessed with too much grey matter either. When he says he's "prepared to die for Zuma", my instinctive thought is: show us, please comrade.

(If you're one of those scared whiteys who gets nervous when Malema threatens violence, remember that the Youth League couldn't even organise its own congress, never mind get it together to paralyse the country.)

I'm also not talking about Cosatu's Zwelinzima Vavi. He is so jealous of the publicity Malema is getting for huffing and puffing and making hollow threats that he is trying to out-Malema Malema to also get on TV. For someone who attacks Zanu-PF so often, he really sounds like a Mugabe thug. We can never take Vavi seriously again.

I'm not even talking about the SA Communist Party's Blade Nzimande. We've known since before Polokwane already that he's not worth the shadow of former SACP leaders like Chris Hani and Joe Slovo. Nzimande is an intellectually dishonest weakling.

Heavyweights

No, I'm talking about heavyweights like Mathews Phosa, Gwede Mantashe and Baleka Mbete. Leaders we thought were going to revive our dreams and bring us a government closer to the people after the next election.

Phosa is a former premier and chair of the Afrikaanse Handelsinstituut. He is a poet (in Afrikaans, nogal) and he is a smart and decent guy. Or so I thought.

Mantashe is the intellectual giant from the trade union movement who was destined to bring a sane voice to government and the ruling party on behalf of the working class. Or so they said.

Mbete is the Speaker of the National Assembly who has risen from a shaky start in politics to being a powerful, respected leader. Or perhaps I was really mistaken when I thought that.

Instead of being leaders, these three were doing the Zuma toyi-toyi like cheap populists outside the Pietermaritzburg court and bad-mouthing the judiciary in tandem with the Youth League delinquents.

Instead of serving the greater good, or even the real interests of the ANC as a whole, these politicians were simply ingratiating themselves to Zuma and his cheering commando.

Pass me my machine gun and screw the constitution, seems to be their message.

Silence

And then there is the Presidential Vice-President, now a cabinet minister, Kgalema Motlanthe. At least he didn't take part in the Pietermaritzburg circus, but his silence was louder than Malema's hysterical shouting.

I would have thought he, and former Defence Force chief and MK heavy Siphiwe Nyanda who was sitting in the court's public gallery, would have thought it dangerous for a former guerrilla commander (in uniform in the streets in front of the court) to threaten "no Zuma, no country". Not a squeak from either man.

But perhaps they know deep down that MK could never organise a piss-up in a brewery, so we shouldn't be frightened by their cheap threats.

I do not believe for one second that bright people like Motlanthe, Phosa, Mantashe and Mbete really believe that Zuma will not get a fair trial in the High Court. They know he will. Their charge that he won't is opportunistic and reckless.

I was all for the New ANC after Polokwane. But if this is the leadership that is going to surround President Jacob Zuma after next year's election, then we were better of with the Essop Pahads and Manto Tshabalala-Msimangs.

I think I need a drink.

  Nuff Said...
06/08/2008 08:49
Winnie Mandela and "fall guy" Yengeni, i cannot begin to express my concern for their continuos involvement in politics. - BLACKsoWHAT!

  ANC leadership
06/08/2008 08:51
I think there is credibility to the allegations that this is a political trial. The fact that Selebi was not fired while there was a case against somehow proves it. One also hopes that Motlanthe, Phosa, Mantashe, Nyanda, e.t.c do discourage the kill for Zuma rhetorics in private. They do not have to do it in the public domain. - pasta

  Internationally...
06/08/2008 08:52
people may be thinking... maybe THIS is why these people, descendants from the same people we are, came up with this crazy apartheid concept. - Whitey

  ...
06/08/2008 08:53
humor me Max, but is this not what you fought for? - joda

  ANC leaders
06/08/2008 08:54
Agreed, Max. One would hope that intelligent leaders like Motlanthe, Phosa, Mantashe and Mbete would steady the ship. South Africa has great potential if the greed and stupidity of some of the ANC leadership doesn't wreck it. We have a wonderful example on our Northern border of what happens when greed runs rampant. As for Malema, well "Elke haan is koning op sy eie mishoop." Awful when a nothing gets pseudo-power. - doug

  ANC leaders
06/08/2008 08:56
There can only be one reason why they do not want him to stand trial. - Mark

  True Colors
06/08/2008 08:57
Their true colors have eventually come out. It is not about democracy, but POWER. Furthermore, with the Super Idiot (Zooooma) claiming that he will "expose and take other officials down" with him - of course these so-called "leaders" are going to demand to have this case thrown ot. They are all thugs to the enth degree!! - True Blue SA

  Question
06/08/2008 08:57
Here's a question for you Max: Who is currently in controll of the country? - Steven

THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE LEADER - IT IS THE PARTY!!
06/08/2008 09:03
Forget about the leaders - an organisation based on the misrepresentation that it is a liberation movement, altough in actual fact a power/populist/irresponsible movement, can never be referred to as a 'movement betrayed by its irresponsible, power-hungry leaders'. The movement's soul has been black as soot from day one, and its leaders follow suit. They might start out with good intentions but they will always end up corrupted by the evil surrounding them... - Liberation Movement to Power Movement to The Fall

  Max, a changed man?!
06/08/2008 09:05
Everyone should have the right to his own opinion, but you, Max, was always very straight forward about it, almost forcing the idea on other people that you are right and they are wrong....and now this article?? I am glad you are getting to the age where you actually forget about your own ego and start talking sense. Good article, keep it up and I might start reading them more often. - Jeremy

  Who can blame them?
06/08/2008 09:05
When the man they're planning to elect president of the country is such a sterling example? One day he's saying he's willing to go to prison if found guilty of corruption, the next day he's basically saying "if I go down then so will you" to the current ANC leadership - blackmail if I ever heard it, not to mention sounding like a de facto admission of guilt. And then there's his choice of personal theme song ... no wonder the people he's supposed to be leading are making such idiots of themselves - marna

  hmmm...
06/08/2008 09:07
leaders can support Zuma if they choose to, and if you feel that they have let you down... maybe you should lead. As for Zuma, i hope he does face the music! quickly!! - rob

  Zoom Zoom Zum?
06/08/2008 09:07
Even more distrubing is Jacobs recent comment that he would: "expose everyone" involved in the arms scandle... Wow!!! a keen display of defensive integrity on demand. How can we entrust the integrity of government to a man who, evidently, is aware of irregularities and fraudulent activities in government but only seeks to expose it when his own neck is on the line????? - Paul Alexander

  Good article
06/08/2008 09:08
Max, this is an excellent article. I agree with you on a lot of points, but aside from that, it is skillfully and stylishly written and shows a fair degree of balance and forethought. Keep up the good work. - Josh

  Leaders?
06/08/2008 09:09
Thanks Max. How true. It is embarrassing (and worrying) to see our "leaders" behaving the way they do. Why can't they just do what they have been elected to do and build a stable and prosperous country? No Zuma,no country? It seems that the people have no say in this! Be warned, look to Kenya, Zimbabwe etc. People only tollerate corrupt fools for a time. WE are bigger than Zuma and his circus. ANC may get a wakeup come elections. - Birdman

  Nice one Max
06/08/2008 09:10
Thanks for easing my mind about these folks. I totally agree that Malema's a fool - I just don't get how they can have so much airtime - they sound like vuvuzela's - loud, stupid and annoying. - Graeme

  CONTINUED
06/08/2008 09:12
Beware of the movement that ignores the constitution they bargained for and let their supporters die for. An example ignored by all experts in the field of political commentary: The Constitutional mandate to legislate lies with the Legislature. However lately the power to legislate lies de facto with the Executive, because acts get passed on industrial scale providing for further regulation by Ministers. In the past Parliament had too many powers. Today the Executive does. Equally catastrophic - Liberation Movement to Power Movement to The Fall

thank god for people like max du preez who are prepared to say their say i agree entirely with the article and am very disappointed in the anc leaders - mike collins

ANC Leaders have let us down
06/08/2008 09:16
What a powerful article! I left S.A. in Sept 2001- and miss reading your provocative 'spot-on' articles. Just surprised they get published.Hope you keep writing and exposing what's going on. You are a brave man and I admire you. - Kathy Le Brasse- Ireland

Glad to see you know all those people...
06/08/2008 09:16
All I see is mindless idiots confirming my fears of years ago. I, in my ignorance, knew that the ANC would never rise above populist politics. Their antics only affirm their popularity with millions of idiot supporters. But tell me Max, is this not why you joined the "struggle"? Did you not see all this coming? I'm not surprised and neither should you be... - Kenko

We are on the dsame page Max, again.
06/08/2008 09:16
Nothing could be further from the truth, although I never took Baleka seriously, I certainly did respect Phosa, Mantashe and Motlanthe. For them to behave this senile and cheap says a lot about the current leadership. What they don't realise is that they are reviving Mbeki again. By the time he leaves office next year (after settling Zim), he will be more favoured by SA than them. - Libembe

  Ignorance is bliss
06/08/2008 09:17
Well siad Joda.No use in crying now Max.You had a very good idea of how things would pan out when the old "back on the farm" conservatives gave their predictions a couple of years back but I guess ignorance is bliss hey! - shane

  Whole ANC Cabinet should resign
06/08/2008 09:25
With immediate effect. Which started as a little flame is now turning into a burning bush. By the end of this saga, a special jail will have to be built to accomodate all the participants. Maybe they should upgrade Robin Island and then use their newly acquired submarines to ferry them accross. They can sommer take the previous NP Apartheid thugs with them. At least something good will then come from the infamous Arms Deal. - TB

  Brilliant, Max
06/08/2008 09:26
...you make it hard for one to not come across as a groupie..but your analysis above was simply brilliant; summed up the feelings of many (former?)ANC supporters. - VG

  Well Written
06/08/2008 09:35
best article i have read from you Max, thanks, could not put it better, well done... just a quick note regarding Zuma's alleged innocence - if he really is 'innocent' then why has he threatened to name all participants in the arms-deal and attempt to blackmail the courts? can u spell I D I O T? these apparent politicians are a mockery of democracy.. - Greg

  Leaders!!!!!!!

too much promises, less action and provision nothing! - Nchilo wa Madiope

  Saying it like it is...
06/08/2008 09:51
Great article. Short, sweet and to the point. I predict a 10% loss in voters for the ANC at the next election. - GvR

  Bravo...
06/08/2008 10:00
I also cannot relate to the new ANC's behaviour. BTW I heard(read) Malema has a list of counter-revolutionary NEC members, so if you want your name removed from the list you better join the circus. Other people have been investigated for 15 yrs what is this rubbish abt 7 years of investigation?? - Mlu

  Constitution
06/08/2008 10:02
It is amusing and strange that the very people who created a situation always cry the loudest. The media has been crying out loud about the sanctity of the constitution and the judiciary. These are the very same people who attended the off the record briefing with the then NPA Boss Bulelani Ngcuka. The next morning we had headlines stating that the National Director of the NPA had said: "whilst there is a prima facie case of corruption against the deputy president, our prospects of success are not strong enough. That means that we are not sure if we have a winnable case". What was the media telling us: ?Zuma is guilty but it can?t be proven.? Was the National Director now the prosecutor and Judge in this matter? Why did the press feel they needed to tell the nation this matter? How many people have been arrested only to find that they are released because there is insufficient evidence, have we had off the record briefing in these cases. The media and the National Director must remember that once they declared Zuma guilty they opened a can of worms for everyone. They declared our constitution to be a useless piece of paper. Since that briefing in 2003 the media has treated the judiciary with contempt. They have convicted Jacob Zuma over and over again. Today we sit with a situation where Zuma?s supporters feel hard done and don?t see fairness in the manner in which he has been treated. The leaders of the ANC know very well that if they don?t show solidarity with Zuma, they might be next in the firing line. They must act as a strong group or they will be destroyed like all others before them. Who will be next? Will there be an off the record briefing to suggest that Mathews Phosa is guilty of corruption but it cannot be proved, sorry that has already happened, he was even accused of a plot against President Thabo Mbeki?s leadership with co-conspirators Tokyo Sexwale and Cyril Ramaphosa. The media has played ball in discrediting our leaders, the judiciary and our constitution and today they are throwing stones at others. As a journalist what are you suggesting? Are you asking for the leaders of the ANC not to act as a group and risk being destroyed as individuals? How many challenged the Previous ANC leadership (President Thabo Mbeki) and survived? Ask Mac Maharaj and Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge. - Thomas

  Justice is a process
06/08/2008 10:08
The issue here is about a process not about Zuma not wanting to go to court. Justice is not only done when you prove yourself in court but also the way the whole issue is conducted. The aim here is to humilliate Mr Zuma. Even if he wins the case but that stigma will remain with him like the rape case. It is the first time a person get investigated for five years and only charged when he is in a position to hold a high position in the country. What does that tells you Mr know it all Max? - BG

Fair comment & please your opinion on R30m
06/08/2008 10:18
Max your comment is fair from your perspective even though I do not agree with you entirely. However, I will not elaborate why. I would like to get you opinion on the alleged R30m bribe. - Mzekezeke

  Impressed
06/08/2008 10:24
I am impressed Max, you have the balls to say things the way they are. I dont always agree with you but you have earned respect with your sincerity. Chris - Chris

thomas protect the guilty as you may
06/08/2008 10:26
the point is they are guilty and the guilty shall reap what they sew. The media have merely exposed what alot of people already suspected from the anc. They say it is better not to know that which can hurt you but in this case it is better to know what can hurt your enemy. The leadership which fails me is my enemy and my enemy will rot in hell before jesus comes to earth not the way zuma thought things would go hey???? hahahahahahahahaha - terence

Stupid kids (Vavi, Mantashe and Malema)
06/08/2008 10:30
I tend to agree with you 1000% Max. You have a stupid ANC youth league leader who is very immature, not suprising that there was chaos after his vote.I used to respect Vavi and Mantashe but after all the shenanigans i've been seeing lately i have second thoughts. I won't even bother myself casting my vote. - Fredo

  Aluta continua
06/08/2008 10:35
Africa and South Africa deserves the leaders we elect. To make it in ANC politics now lately you need to be controversial, with a scandal or two behind your name. The struggle has been betrayed by this post-Polokwane leadership. Are we still adhering to the old liberation slogan "it's better to die of hunger in the land of freedom, than to have plenty in a land of oppresion"? - IandI

  An absolute tradegy
06/08/2008 10:41
What's happening to the ANC and this country is an absolute tradegy. The great ANC leaders of the past fought for decades for a democratic SA only to have these monkeys destroy it in a matter of years. Malema is a first class ass. Wonder what Nelson Mandela thinks about all of this - would be interesting to hear his honest feelings. - Shrek

  Make mine a double...
06/08/2008 10:41
I have had it with the whole disgraceful lot. I know the probability of it making a difference is miniscule, but I will show my disapproval at the ballot box next year. In the meantime Max, make mine a double. Incidentally Graeme, "Vuvuzela" Malema has quite a ring to it, I think the name just might stick. - cj

Max, Like an response to Joda. Leaders?
06/08/2008 10:55
If the criminal leaders were removed from the equasion, who would be left to be effective leaders? Always been suspicious of ANC leaders, now they prove what their intentions has always been. Just took some time to materialise. Who do we vote for come next election? Who will serve the nation? Where are the true unbiased leaders? Will ANC supporters also realise what is happening? For now, NZ still looks good escape from criminal & MK threatend RSA! Dont underestimate military (thugs) arm. - Matrix

  ANC
06/08/2008 10:56
I'M A GREAT SUPPORTER OF THE ANC POLICIES, AND THIS IS WHY I CARRY IT'S MEMBERSHIP CARD.BUT IF PPL ARE GOING TO MOVE AWAY FROM AGREED POLICIES TO BENEFIT THEIR INTERESTS, IT BECOMES A PROBLEM. BLACK PPL THIS IS NOT IN MILITARY WHERE YOU FOLLOW ORDERS NO MATTER WHAT, THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A DEMOCRACY. WHEN WE GETTING THIS INJUSTICE FROM PPL WE VOTE INTO POWER, WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE ANC IS CRAP FINISH AND KLAAR. CALL ME COUNTER REVOLUTIONARY OR KILL ME. - eugine

  Mzekezeke - 30 Million
06/08/2008 10:59
We all subconsciously knew Mbeki is involved in the arms scandal. According to 'sources', Zuma received 2 million. Mbeki AND Zuma, both guilty of corruption, and I wonder how many other ANC officials as well. Kick them ALL out of the country. Confiscate ALL their assets, and build some nice schools and cheap housing. Corruption does NOT belong in our country, and we should send them a message. We do NOT WANT corrupt officials. - Sinudeity

The Story of a South African Tragedy
06/08/2008 11:04
I echo every word you write....what a tragedy that it is all so ghastly and true. Best thing I can think of is to build new Parliament Buildings on Robben Island...at least they will be back where they belong....plus the new lot. - Alicia

  Anyone got tickets to Oz?
06/08/2008 11:08
Well written, and sad... absolute power corrupts, and power corrupts absolutely. When will this country get leaders that really care about progressing this nation in the right direction? In the mean time, maybe an extended vacation to Australia, until these guys have exhausted themselves tearing the country apart.. - tommo

06/08/2008 11:08
I do love your articles, their most importantly objective! Just a point I would like to make with the Malema and Zuma statements, it is funny how THEY judge the political conspiracy against them, and they don't make report it so that statements can be brought to justice? The other thing is that they don't have respect for the powers instated above them, including their comrades - nuclear

Mad Max, who must we black people vote for now,
06/08/2008 11:08
Your DA, and bring Hellen Zille, who leaves in a lavish house somewhere in the Cape, never been in the township, unless there is a xenophibic crisis, who has never slept in a shack similar to mine. Are you mad Max? I vote the ANC, becuase I can see them everyday or during the weekend in my township. Go bring Mark Thatcher to face his music, and see if Aunt Thatcher will not be here on the first plane. Get real dude. - Philani

  ANC Leaders
06/08/2008 11:09
Don't be surprised have you forgoten the saying that say birds of the feather flock together, I'm curious to know what JZ was implying to in his statement when he said I'll expose everybody, nobody held a gun to JZ's head to get envolved in all this mess so why make all this fuss like nobody understands that he brought all this upon himself. if he has to take all of his freinds with him down, so be it we want to leave in a peaceful country and enjoy our freedom - MM

  Shameful
06/08/2008 11:09
Great article Max. The ANC's utter lack of leadership and infighting is disturbing to say the least. Did they think that the world would just ignore the fact that the person elected to run the ANC (and therefore the country) was charged with rape and is currently facing numerous charges of corruption? Is the kind of person we need to run the country? Forget the fact that he is indecisive and contunually changes his views on important issues just to remaincongruent to popular opinion. - DJ

  Zuma's promises
06/08/2008 11:12
I reckon Zuma has promised those who so slavishly promote him two things when he assumes the Presidencey - power and money. What else would seduce supposed socialists and intellectuals to abandon their principles? We should no longer blame apartheid for our woes - now it's greed. - Kathryn

  @Shrek
06/08/2008 11:17
I think Mr Mandela is SOOO embarassed, but it doesn't matter, because not ONE ANC politician gives a rat's behind, what Mr Mandela thinks, or what he faught for, or for what he stands for... So like everything else, crime, corruption, etc etc....it's a losing battle. Until the PEOPLE of this country wakes up!! WAKE UP!!!! - sad state of affairs

06/08/2008 11:19
Well done Max ,good article .our country is being led by criminals and we know it all of them has something to hide and most of them got something out of the arms deal.that is why the crime is so high in the country .They (the criminals)are just following the (good )leadership, and they(the leadership) can not do anything to stop them because they teach them how.The leaders in this country have no idea of what democricy is .Just like Zim. - roedolf

  Face it
06/08/2008 11:23
Apparently the majority of our peoples like to suffer because they keep on backing the same incompetent leadership and their cronies thus our country will be subjected to the government the people deserve. The sad part is that only after the South African citizens has lost all the good things and everything is broken down to a load of rubble, we will think about what was and we will remember that 06/08/2008 was one of the good old days. Objective observation underlines the fact that as a country we are on self-destruct countdown and maybe its is a good thing because after the truth is unveiled nobody will have the moral high ground and we just might realise how dependent we are on one another as human beings. - HEIN

  @Philane
06/08/2008 11:24
No friend, we don't want the DA, but unfortunately there are NO uncorrupted black politicians in the ANC. We need a new party, black and white together. Don't be so synical, be sensible - Hoping

Help Outvote the ANC instead of Abstaining
06/08/2008 11:28
If Zuma wins on his application of leave of prosecution, the SA juducial system will be cast in bad light. If he loses, there will be unrest. Either way, SA loses. The only way SA can save itself is to outvote the ANC and the current issues become party politics as opposed to national issues. ID, DA, somebody, strike while the iron is hot. - Alf

  @Philani
06/08/2008 11:34
I think Prez Mbeki lives (and has lived) way more lavishly than Zille. I think in general Presidents in Africa make more money than say a president in Europe (unless he is Italian). You think they represent you but once they obtain power they join the elite and forget their heritage. The rich are getting richer faster than ever before? Are we talking of the same ANC here?Stop smoking whatever you are smoking &start thinking for yourself. - M

why do u have to raise the race card?
06/08/2008 11:34
It is quiet disturbing that whenever there are issues with the ANC leadership, people disregard the entire black community as beign of greed, stupidity and all the incitements that have been posted on this column. - Letlalo

  What a laugh
06/08/2008 11:34
I have every day reading about the biggest bunch of monkeys "running" South Africa... My decision to leave SA is again enforced, and I go back to work in a first world country with power, (usuable) public transport and no murder. Viva SA? I don't think so... - Henry

  @ Philani
06/08/2008 11:36
"..Hellen Zille, who leaves in a lavish house somewhere in the Cape...who has never slept in a shack similar to mine." You could just as well have replaced Zille's name with Thabo Mbeki and every Minister in his cabinet. - jannie

  The beginning of the end.
06/08/2008 11:40
Any of you see the photographs on the Web of the thousands of people (who each paid R150) to attend the recent New Zealand Immigration Expo in Johannesburg? The line of people waiting to enter the exhibition centre, where the Expo was held, disappeared out of the camera's range of view! The recent Circus in Pietermaritzburg is, without a doubt, going to trigger another massive emigration wave! Getting out - Durban RSA - getting out

  ANC reign
06/08/2008 11:41
Yes, Max. The longer the ANC tries to govern, the more people may realise why it took the Nats so long to give up power. We all knew what the outcome would be. Unfortunately we were proven right. - Roelfie

The democracy that "we all fought for" is going down the drain. The electorate is hereby called upon to protect it. So sharpen your pencils and do the right thing....do not vote for a party with issues that will threaten the very democracy which we are all greatful to have. In a democracy, citizens do have a responsibility of voting objectively. Exercise that duty for crying out loud instead of threatening not to vote or migrate to Australia. - Alf

Er? No one is mentioning black people, this has been entirely about the ANC leadership. Try reading the comments please, this is not about black or white. Skim reading is bad for your health! - Point Blank

I'm with you bro, people must not decide to have selective amnesia, there must be fairness and there must be facts, ever wondered why they don't allow media in court rooms most of the time but instead resort to artists to draw sketches on what was happening? If people don't like Zuma for any other reason then they must just say so and stop this nonsense. - mb

  Well done, Max

You are starting to talk some serious sense here for a change. Just a pity it seems that time is running out for all of us here in SA. - GW

  Zum's statement
06/08/2008 12:10
as carried by News 24...If I go down, I'm taking plenty others down with me. Is this not a candid acknowledgement that he is , in fact corrupt, and guilty, and that his main defence is that there are many others just as corrupt also? Oh to be a fly on the wall when those kinds of discussions take place....... - jonathan

  NOT LEAVING SA!
06/08/2008 12:37
Every so often I read these articles and comments and at first I became so depressed to see how corrupt politicians steam-rolled thier demands through the country, with little regard to the people of SA. We all know Zuma is guilty, we all know why he is dissolving the Scorpions, we all know why Provincial Premiers are being replaced. WE ALL KNOW WHY! We must make a stand and refuse to let evil overcome the common good. VOTE THE ANC OUT, at least until they learn their lesson. - Sean
