Minnelli defends her pal

Los Angeles - Entertainment icon Liza Minnelli came to the defence of close pal Michael Jackson on Wednesday, as child experts and parents across the world rounded on him for dangling his baby from a hotel window.
Minnelli, said that while she had not seen the much-televised film showing the "King of Pop" holding his six-month-old son over a balcony railing, such a stunt seemed out of character for the child-loving singer.
"It doesn't sound like him at all," she told reporters in Los Angeles, pointing to Jackson's love of children and his charitable work for them.
Jackson was best man at Minnelli's star-studded wedding to producer David Gest in April, and Gest helped guide the Jackson five to stardom.
Earlier, Minnelli told CNN television's Larry King Live programme that she was loath to comment until she knew all the facts surrounding the incident that occurred while Jackson was in Berlin to receive an award.
"It's also the angle of the camera," she said. "Of course nobody should do that to a child, but did he do that, or was he holding up the bay over the railing to show the fans as he did his other little boy first?" she asked.
Jackson earlier on Wednesday apologised for the incident that shocked child protection experts in the United States and made newspaper and television headlines across the globe, saying: "I made a terrible mistake."
"I got caught up in the excitement of the moment. I would never intentionally endanger the lives of my children," he said in a statement issued by his California lawyer Zia Modabber.
The diva daughter of Hollywood legend Judy Garland also revealed on Wednesday that she and Gest planned to adopt a three-year-old girl called Serena in January.
She said she wanted an older child who was "already here and has not had a chance yet to be loved ... to be supported. Somebody who is already here and who doesn't have anything.
"That's why I thought an older child who is already here would be more understandable for somebody my age," she told Larry King.
