  • Los Angeles - Country stars "The Dixie Chicks" have been blacklisted by country music stations across the United States after the band's singer made anti-war statements at a British concert.

Thousands of fans of the popular music genre called in to radio stations to complain about the allegedly unpatriotic statements of lead singer Natalie Maines, who said in a concert in London last week that she was "ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas".

In Louisiana, one station went even further than removing the band from the playlist. It gathered hundreds of fans to throw Dixie Chicks CD's on a pile which was then crushed by a bulldozer.

The Texas-based group is still top of the country charts, but could fall quickly if it doesn't receive air time. Lead singer Maines said in a statement she felt the president was ignoring the opinions of many in the United States and alienating the rest of the world by pushing for war with Iraq.

"We've been overseas for several weeks and have been reading and following the news accounts of our government's position. The anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding," Maines said. - Sapa-DPA
