Sydney - Police dropped a malicious damage charge on Friday against Chris Martin, lead singer of British band Coldplay and boyfriend of Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow.
It was not immediately clear why the charge was dropped, but lawyers for the singer had applied at an earlier hearing to have the case dismissed.
Martin was charged following an altercation with a photographer on July 20 in the east coast resort town of Byron Bay. Police said at the time that the photographer's car windshield was smashed with a rock.
Martin was not present in Byron Bay Magistrates Court on Friday when police dropped the charge and magistrate Jeff Linden dismissed the case against the 26-year-old.
At the time of the incident, Martin was in Byron Bay with Paltrow to perform at a music festival.
Police originally said the British singer was surfing at Byron Bay's Seven Mile beach and later confronted a photographer who had taken photos of him.
