  • China - Hollywood kung fu film star Jackie Chan and Candace Bushnell, writer of the US comedy hit Sex in the City, are among the panel of judges selecting this year's Miss World in China.

Chan and Bushnell are among nine judges in charge of eyeing up the talents, intelligence and aesthetic merits of 106 women competing for the title in the southern province of Hainan, organisers said on Tuesday.

Also co-hosting Miss World on Saturday in tropical Sanya city is British and US television star Amanda Byram.

"I needed the cash," joked Byram when asked why she had come to China. "Why not? It's Miss World," she said, adding that she used to watch the competition as a child.

Irish-born Byram, star of the US reality TV series Paradise Hotel, will be joined by Phil Keoghan, host of The Amazing Race and Hong Kong-based Phoenix TV's Angela Chow.

Ms World's opposite number, Brazilian Gustavo Gianetti who is the current Mr World, has also been selected as a judge.

Gianetti said he had no personal favourites so far as strict pageant rules prevent him from talking with any of the girls until Friday when he will interview them individually.

"The most important thing is that they answer questions intelligently," said Gianetti, the fourth holder of the Mr World title.

Providing entertainment will be singer Bryan Ferry - that's Ferry not of Roxy Music but of Cincinatti city.

Organisers said they expect a worldwide TV audience of more than two billion people, making it one of the biggest television events in the world.

China, which until this year officially banned beauty pageants, also plans to beam the programme nationwide.
