New York - American country music icon Willie Nelson has written a new song "Whatever happened to Peace on Earth" in which he condemns the United States-led war on Iraq, reports said Thursday.
The song was inspired after the 70-year-old saw televised reports of continuing attacks in Iraq on Christmas Day, according to US media reports.
Nelson will air the song publicly for the first time at the weekend during an election campaign for the Democratic Party candidate Dennis Kucinich, in the state of Texas, home to US President George W Bush.
In the song the Country singer, who is nominated for a forthcoming Grammy award for the fifth time, asks "How much oil is one human life worth?" before the chorus: "Hell they won't lie to me/ Not on my own damn TV/ But how much is a liar's word worth/ and Whatever happened to peace on Earth?",
In Texas and other southern states of the US, where country music is particularly popular, The Dixie Chicks, one of the biggest acts in country music, had their music boycotted by some country radio stations after lead singer Natalie Mains said at a concert in London just before the invasion of Iraq that she was embarrassed to be from the same state as Bush.
During Bush's year as president there have been numerous protests from a number of US pop and rock musicians protesting against his administration and policies. - Sapa-dpa
