New York - Drew Barrymore became smitten with one of her co-stars in the new romantic comedy 50 First Dates, but it wasn't Adam Sandler - it was a gigantic walrus.
"I was obsessed with him. I wouldn't leave his side for a second," Barrymore told reporters in Honolulu recently.
In 50 First Dates, Sandler plays a veterinarian at a marine park in Hawaii. (The walrus is his patient.)
Barrymore said she found herself hugging and petting the walrus.
"His mouth is full of gums, there's no teeth, so you can feed him ice and put your whole hand in his mouth," the actress said. "And he painted me this painting (using a pacifier-like brush in his mouth) and I have it up on my wall. It's so cool."
Barrymore plays a young accident victim with short-term memory loss. When she goes to sleep at night, she forgets everything that happened to her the previous day. Sandler's character desperately wants her to remember him, so he tries to win her over each day.
As for her real-life boyfriend, Fabrizio Morietti of the Strokes, Barrymore says she treats each date as if it's their first.
"You should never lose that enthusiasm, no matter how long you're in your relationship, like the 'getting ready to go on a date' process," she said.
