'Sony plagiarised J Lo film'

New York - A New York-based scriptwriter is seeking $5m in damages from Sony Pictures for allegedly stealing the idea behind the 2002 movie Enough starring Jennifer Lopez, her lawyer said on Monday.

The lawsuit was filed by Allyson Turner last week in federal court in New York.

Turner said she became aware of Sony's alleged plagiarism after several friends congratulated her on having her idea, which she had submitted in script form to the company, developed into a Jennifer Lopez movie.

A subsequent viewing of Enough - in which Lopez plays a waitress in an abusive marriage, who flees from, and eventually kills, her husband - convinced Turner that the film was an adaptation of her script.

"The story line, dialogue, scenes, costume props, and idiosyncratic characteristics of the characters in both works are uncannily parallel and lead to a single inescapable conclusion," said Turner's lawyer Gregory Danenberg.

"I have rarely been faced with such a clear-cut case of copyright infringement," Danenberg said.

"Sony Pictures' apparent belief that it could come away from this unscathed is truly stupefying."

A Sony spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
