  • London - Tom Cruise's flame Katie Holmes has been dropped from the next Batman movie, Sky News reports.

Warners Bros chiefs are reportedly unhappy that Holmes' whirlwind relationship with Cruise diverted attention away from Batman Begins.

Holmes' co-stars Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman have all signed up for the sequel.

Bale as Batman was the first to put pen to paper, followed by Caine as butler Alfred and Freeman as Bruce Wayne's business associate Lucius Fox, Sky News says.

"Everyone is in agreement that the movie's strength is with Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman," a source is quoted on Pagesix.com.

Batman Begins has soared to the top of the North American box office over the weekend.

The film grossed an expected $46.9m between Friday and Sunday, according to California-based box office trackers Exhibitor Relations.

The film, which tells the story of how mild-mannered millionaire Bruce Wayne becomes a superhero, has raked in an estimated $71m since it opened in the US on Wednesday.

  • Batman Begins opens in South Africa on June 24.
