  • New York - Hollywood stars and musicians in the United States are joining efforts to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina, with dozens of big name acts due to take part in two upcoming benefit concerts, Hollywood Reporter daily said on Wednesday.

Sheryl Crowe, Paul Simon, Alicia Keys and the Dixie Chicks are among performers expected to take part in a televised benefit concert to air on Friday in the US and abroad.

A host of film and television stars, including Jack Nicholson, Cameron Diaz, Chris Rock, Jennifer Aniston and Ellen DeGeneres are also expected to lead calls for public donations during the Shelter From The Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast show.

The concert will be broadcast live from Los Angeles and New York on Friday evening local time and will air on more than two dozen cable channels in over 95 countries.

Alicia Keys is also said to be planning an appearance on the ReAct Now: Music & Relief benefit show to be broadcast live on MTV music network from New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Nashville on Saturday.

Rock groups Usher, Green Day, Ludacris and the Dave Matthew Band are also expected to perform, with the concert proceeds going to the Red Cross.

Jazz musicians in New York are also said to be planning a benefit concert for victims of the Gulf Coast flooding later this month.

Meanwhile, several stars have put their hands in their pockets for the hurricane victims.

Film director Steven Spielberg has contributed $75 000 (about R473 872) to the relief effort, while Hollywood actor George Clooney has donated one million dollars to the United Way foundation of which he is a director.

Star television presenter Oprah Winfrey has given one million dollars to the Red Cross, whereas Barry Manilow has promised to match every donation made to his own foundation.
