Los Angeles - South African born Oscar winner Charlize Theron has been named actress of year at the Hollywood Film Awards, Ananova.com reports.
The actress picked up the award for her performance in North County.
The movie is based on the story of a monumental class-action lawsuit in 1989 that aimed to reshape gender politics in American industry.
Theron plays Josey Aimes, a mother of two who returns home to northern Minnesota to rebuild her life after fleeing an abusive husband.
The actress began her film career as James Spader's love interest in 1996's 2 Days in the Valley before starring in such movies as The Cider House Rules, The Italian Job and Woody Allen's Celebrity.
But it was her frightening portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003's Monster that cemented her status and earned her an Oscar and Golden Globe award.
Theron has been tipped as a contender for another best actress award at next year's Oscars.
Other stars who won honours at the Hollywood Film Awards includes Joaquin Phoenix, who was named actor of the year for his work in Walk the Line.
Susan Sarandon picked up the gong for best supporting actress for Elizabethtown, and Matthew Broderick picked up best supporting actor for The Producers.
Jennifer Aniston presented her Good Girl co-star, Jake Gyllenhaal with the award for best breakthrough actor for Jarhead.
