Picasso sells for millions
03/11/2005 14:25 - (SA)
New York - Pablo Picasso's Nu Jaune, or Naked Yellow, was sold for the top price at Sotheby's autumn auction on Wednesday night in New York, fetching $13.7m (about R90.1m).
The painting of an abstract female figure in yellow that Picasso painted in 1907 achieved roughly four times its pre-auction estimated price of $3m to $4m (about R19.7m to R26.3m).
The auction of Impressionist and modern art as a whole also overshot Sotheby's expectations, bringing in $130m when sales of $90m to $125m had been expected.
Other works to achieve high sale prices were Claude Monet's dreamy painting of Venice's Le Grand Canal, which sold for $12.9m; Henri Matisse's Robe Jaune et Robe Arlequin (Nezy et Lydia), or Yellow Dress and Harlequin Dress (Nezy and Lydia), a painting of two seated women, which switched hands for $10.9m; and Alexej von Jawlensky's Sizilianerin mit Grnem Schal, or Sicialian Woman with Green Shawl, which sold for $5.1m.
The second part of the Impressionist and modern art auction will be held on Thursday.
