  • Los Angeles - For the second weekend in a row, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has left its North American box office competitors far in its wake, preliminary figures showed on Sunday.

The fourth and most frightening film in the top-selling Harry Potter franchise was expected to take in $54.9m (about R358m) in ticket sales for the Friday through Sunday period, according to California-based box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

That would bring the Goblet of Fire total since its release 10 days ago to $201m, making it one of the year's best-selling movies.

Ambling along in Harry Potter's wake was the biopic of the late country music star Johnny Cash, Walk the Line, which took in an estimated $19.7m.

Yours, Mine and Ours, a comedy about a family with 18 children, debuted in third place, selling $17.4m in tickets.

The fourth place film was animation hit Chicken Little, earning $12.4m, while film version of the musical Rent rounded out the top five, taking in $10.7m in box office receipts.
